  • Europe Is So Toast, Says Hedgeye’s Keith McCullough: France, Italy Will Crash Next

You already know that Greece is bust and that Spain is probably right on its heels. But we bet you haven’t worried enough about the next European disaster-in-the-making–FRANCE.

That’s right–the land of wine, cheese, and Lance Armstrong.  Keith McCullough, CEO and founder of research firm Hedgeye, says that upcoming debt maturities will blow up France (and Italy) as soon as next quarter.  And the U.S. is next.

  • Iran Asks US to Accept Nuclear Deal

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Russia and the United States to accept a nuclear fuel swap deal. Mr. Ahmadinejad stated that the swap would be a “historic opportunity” for President Barack Obama. He said that President Barack Obama “should bear in mind that if he does not use this opportunity, Iranians unlikely to give him a new chance. There are people in the world and in America who insist on pitting Mr. Obama against Iranians and push him to the point of no return and force him to do something which will forever block the path of friendship with Iranians.” Iran is already under three sets of UN sanctions for its refusal to stop the uranium enrichment process, where other countries see the program as a way to cover a drive for nuclear weapon. Iran denies any of the allegations and insists that the program is only for power generation and medical purposes. Ahmadinejad had gone out at Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Moscow’s position on the nuclear issue. He had accused their long time trade partner of “siding with those who have not been our enemy for 30 years.” He added, “We hope Russian officials will pay attention, make amends and not let Iranians put them in the line of their historic enemies.”

Iran had submitted a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with a plan to send 1200 kilograms of low-enriched uranium to Turkey so that it would be made into a higher –grade fuel and will be used for medical research reactor in Tehran. The IAEA has not yet commented on the deal; however specialists said that the accord has a key technical flaw as it fails to allocate enough time to make the fuel. Iran awaits a 20 percent enriched uranium reactor fuel within a year of depositing its low-enriched uranium in Turkey.

  • Towing Company Continues To Stand By Its Misplaced Lawsuit Against Angry Customer, Despite Losing Half Its Business

Back in April, we wrote about a towing company that got so upset about a Facebook page that it decided to sue the page’s creator for libel. As pointed out at the time, this only served to draw more attention to the claims made by the Facebook page — claiming that the towing company often towed legitimately parked cars. In fact, the controversy has brought out many more people who claim they had legitimately parked cars towed. An anonymous reader let us know that the Detroit Free Press has checked in on the towing company again, and it’s now lost half of its accounts due to this controversy. You might think, at this point, the company would wise up, admit that it was wrong, apologize to the guy it sued, and try to focus on building its reputation back up. But… no luck. The company sticks by its stance. The owner’s lawyer blames the lost business on the “hostility” the situation caused. Um. Or, perhaps it was towing legitimately parked cars, and then suing someone who complained about it. That might have something to do with the lost business too. Oh, and it’s probably worth mentioning that the company, T&J Towing, has an F-rating at the local Better Business Bureau, due to 20 complaints in the last three years… of which it responded to only three. Maybe, rather than suing critics, T&J should learn to respond to them.

And, of course, it appears the situation is getting even worse for the company. Because of all this attention, many others have been stepping up to complain about their own experiences with T&J, leading the lawyer representing the guy T&J sued to look about filing a class action lawsuit against the company. It seems like the company would have been better off apologizing and giving the original guy back his money. Or not towing his car in the first place.

  • Filling in the Gaps: How to Incorporate Joint Mobility Drills

puzzleBy now, I hope the importance of joint mobility is clear, and the benefits myriad. It isn’t the sexiest topic around to be sure. “The Importance of Shoulder Mobility” certainly isn’t as attention-grabbing as “How to Lose 10 lbs in 10 days!,” but it’s one of those often overlooked aspects of fitness that with just a little attention could save you years of pain, frustration, rehab and maybe even surgery – not to mention a boatload of cash in doctor bills. Incorporating just a few minutes of mobility drills a few times each week is a great way to round out an otherwise complete routine. If you’ve missed any of the articles I’ve written over the last few weeks you can catch up here:

The Importance of Mobility: The Hips

How to Regain and Maintain Hip Mobility

The Importance of Thoracic Spine Mobility

How to Improve Thoracic Spine Mobility

The Importance of Wrist and Ankle Mobility

How to Improve Wrist and Ankle Mobility

The Importance of Shoulder Mobility and Scapular Stability

How to Maintain Shoulder Mobility and Scapular Stability

Before I get to how to incorporate the mobility drills into your regular physical activities, a recap of why joint mobility is so important:

By engaging every joint in your body the correct way you drastically decrease your chance of injury. With full joint mobility, there is very little of the “out of position” awkwardness that’s at the heart of many injuries. Too often, injuries occur because we make sudden movements along incorrect joints – twisting with the lumbar spine instead of the thoracic spine, for example – due to lack of joint mobility.

It increases the efficiency of your movement. Learning how to move your joints along their predetermined pathways means smooth, clean, unimpeded movement. When you pick up something heavy with your hips instead of your lower back, your only impediment is the weight itself; there are no structural deficiencies getting in your way and making it even harder and the risk of injury even higher. You still have to work against the load, but your efficiency is no longer hamstrung by the use of the wrong joints in the wrong places.

It increases your performance. Understanding the proper role of each joint and muscle group – and how to engage and activate them in your movements – results in massive performance gains. Your bench press will soar once you grasp the importance of the shoulder blade retraction; your vertical leap will jump once you learn to start extending your hips. And besides, you can’t expect to perform on any level if you’re sidelined with a mobility-related injury or if your movements are grossly inefficient.

It will increase your range of motion – your active flexibility. Static flexibility has its place, but for an athlete (or anyone moderately active, really), mobility is far more important. It’s similar to the question of isolation exercises versus compound exercises. Which are more applicable to the real world? Which more effectively mimic the movements you’ll make in your daily life? Static stretches are a bit like isolation exercises, while mobility prepares you for the rigors of real movement.

    Application

If you failed, or came close to failing, the joint mobility tests mentioned in my previous posts, plan on incorporating joint mobility drills into your daily schedule. Off-days, on-days, sick days, vacation – no matter what you’re doing or whom you’re doing it with, make sure you perform a targeted joint mobility session every single day. Mobility must come before everything else. It must precede strength, sports, and even just protracted sessions of sitting. It’s the foundation. Mobility prepares you for life, and unless you plan on leading a completely sedentary existence (complete with sedan chair manned by indentured servants), you’re going to be moving throughout it. On consecutive days, do the drills I mentioned for each particular joint, or complete the suggested programs listed in each article. So, Monday will be hips, Tuesday thoracic spine, and so on. Repeat the cycle once you reach the end. Follow this schedule until you’re mobile or until you can complete the tests easily and move around without stiffness. Then, pick just one or two movements for each joint and incorporate them into your workout warm-ups. They should be quick and easy, but with focus on proper form. This should be enough to maintain mobility.

If you’re an athlete with good “subconscious” mobility, but who’s never really given thought to the issue, work the drills into your warm-ups. Natural, raw athleticism can appear to overcome any mobility deficiencies, but that only works for a while. It may even work for years. Eventually, though, lack of mobility will creep up on you. And when it does, when it finally manifests in the natural athlete, the results will be staggering. New, mysterious pains, long in the making, will appear, seemingly out of the blue. You most likely won’t be struck by an acute injury, but rather by wear and tear from years of improper movement obscured by natural talent. It’s better to address the potential problem before it appears. Do two weeks of intensive joint mobility drills, following the movements outlined in the articles, and then draw it down to warm-ups only. Choose one or two movements for each joint in your warm-up, paying attention to the composition of your impending workout to determine focus. Squat and deadlift days get hip mobility, while pressing days get thoracic spine and shoulder drills, and so on. The initial “shock” of full-on mobility training should cement the pathways in your brain and get the neurons firing, while the warm-up drills will maintain them. Never be content to rest on the laurels provided by natural athleticism.

Don’t get lazy. It’s easy to say “Oh, I’ll skip the mobility drill today,” but don’t do it. If it’s easy to skip, it’s just as easy to take a few minutes out of your life to actually do the drill and reduce your chances of injury. Inconsequentiality goes both ways; what’s easy to shrug off and dismiss is just as easy to address and commit to. Do the drills.

Finally, be mindful of your movements. Picking up a coin off the ground? Use your hips. Twisting to see someone calling your name on the street? Rotate along the thoracic spine. In these situations, you could just lapse into the old, lazy ways and get away with it, but you’d be reinforcing incorrect movement for the times when it really matters. What you do in your daily life will set the tone for the rest of your life. Lazy, incorrect joint movements outside of the weight room or athletic field will establish lazy, incorrect joint movements in the weight room and on the field.

Proper joint movements may feel strange. For a lot of people, mobility training forces their bodies to move in totally new, seemingly unnatural ways. We’ve been moving and sitting and standing so awkwardly and so incorrectly for so many years that natural movement patterns seem unnatural. It’s insane, really, how far we’ve gotten from our natures. Diet gets the brunt of the attention around here, but straying from the body’s natural joint movement pathways has powerful consequences, too.

Have you tried any of the joint mobility drills? Experiences? Results? Thank you for reading!

  • iPhone 3G for $97 in Wal-Mart

Yes, this is true! Giant retail store Wal-Mart reduced the price of iPhone 3G on Tuesday with the intention of clearing the shelves so that it can create a place for new models from Apple. Believe it or not Wal-Mart started selling 16 gigabyte iPhone 3G smartphones for just $97 with two year service contracts from AT&T.

Senior category director for wireless in Wal-Mart said, they are going to reduce the price of smartphones so that the customers can grab these new savings as soon as possible. The price for which the smartphones are being sold at Wal-Mart is $102 cheaper than from an Apple store and both the stores ask you to sign a two year contract on phone with AT&T.

Apple is coming up with the new model iPhone 4G and that is the reason why Wal-Mart is trying to clear the shelves. People are now thinking, whether to buy 3G from Wal-Mart or they should wait for the new model which is going to be in stores from July?

The question is, is it a good deal? Bad buy? Or wait for next one?

California is broke and the state government wants a cut of the action.

    Via: NPR:

For decades, illegal marijuana cultivation has been an economic lifeblood for three counties in northern California known as the Emerald Triangle.

The war on drugs and frequent raids by federal drug agents have helped support the local economy — keeping prices for street sales of pot high and keeping profits rich.

But high times are changing. Legal pot, under the guise of the California’s medical marijuana laws, has spurred a rush of new competition. As a result, the wholesale price of pot grown in these areas is plunging.

TEHRAN/MOSCOW, May 26 (Reuters) – Iran and Russia clashed on Wednesday over Kremlin support for draft U.N. sanctions against the Islamic Republic, in one of the worst rows between the two powers since the Cold War.

The public clash indicates growing concern in Tehran after the United States said Russia and China, the closest thing Iran has to big-power allies, had agreed to a draft sanctions resolution to punish Iran over its nuclear programme.

In unusually strong criticism of Russia, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad admonished the Kremlin for bowing to what he said was U.S. pressure to agree sanctions and bluntly warned President Dmitry Medvedev to be more cautious.

“If I were the Russian president, when making decisions about subjects related to a great nation (Iran) … I would act more cautiously, I would think more,” Ahmadinejad said in a televised outdoor speech.

He said that Russian support for the United States was unacceptable and that Moscow should rethink its decision or face being viewed as an enemy by Tehran.

Within hours, the Kremlin’s top foreign policy adviser dismissed Ahmadinejad’s criticism, telling the Iranian president to refrain from “political demagoguery”.

  • Is North Korea on the Verge of Collapse?

    Via Prison Planet.com » Commentary

    Bonnie Glaser
    OilPrice.com
    Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Despite the posturing of his regime, there are signs that Kim Jong-Il’s hold on North Korea may be slipping and international community must be ready.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is considered an international pariah in most nations, but he was welcomed with open arms in China May 3-7.  The visit underscored North Korea’s isolation: Kim’s last foreign visit in 2006 was also to China. Despite approving tough United Nations sanctions after Pyongyang’s second nuclear test, Beijing continues to provide energy and food assistance to the North that remains indispensible for the regime’s survival. Yet, even with China’s help, there are growing signs of economic and political volatility in the DPRK and the risks of instability—including regime collapse — cannot be ruled out.

In late 2009, the North’s leadership revalued the nation’s currency, causing severe inflation and popular unrest.  The regime then barred foreign currency and closed markets, eliminating vital sources of food and other necessities.  Kim suffered a stroke in 2008, but it remains to be seen whether plans to transfer power to his youngest and least experienced son can be carried out smoothly.  It cannot be excluded that the sinking of the South Korean naval vessel Cheonan is an outcome of internal succession politics — a move by a faction seeking to gain power, or even by the leadership itself, seeking to maintain a grip on the military during the transition.

It is premature to predict near-term regime collapse in North Korea, but it is not too early for major regional parties to plan for the effects of instability, potentially including massive refugee flows and unsecure nuclear weapons, materials, facilities, and knowhow that could be smuggled out of the North and into the hands of the highest bidder.  Responses to instability could include decisions by China, South Korea and the US to dispatch troops into North Korea to restore order and to locate and secure weapons of mass destruction facilities.  Absent advance coordination, these forces could come into conflict with each other.

Despite the obvious risks, the US has been unable to establish multilateral cooperation on a coordinated contingency response plan.  Bilateral planning has been stepped up with South Korea under the Lee Myung-bak administration, but China remains unwilling to discuss instability response with the US or the ROK.

Is North Korea on the Verge of Collapse? 260310banner2

Why is Beijing loath to reveal its likely plans in the event of North Korean instability? First, China harbors deep suspicions about US and ROK intentions, fearing that the allies may use instability in the North as a pretext to carry out South Korea-led reunification and to station US troops close to China’s border.  Second, Beijing worries that instability response coordination with the US and South Korea would sour relations with Pyongyang.

Finally, China may be seeking to preserve the “strategic ambiguity” of its response in order to deter all sides, including Pyongyang, from taking actions that would destabilize regional security.

Beijing is not alone in its hesitancy.  Seoul has long been reluctant to coordinate contingency plans with any nation besides the US, worrying that increased transparency may open the door to great-power meddling.  The ROK is particularly anxious about China, which it believes might obstruct efforts to reunify the Korean Peninsula under democratic and free market principles.

The US cannot afford to let great power politics stand in the way of planning an effective response to North Korean instability; the risks are simply too great.  Instead, it should seek to create favorable conditions for the primary parties, namely itself, South Korea, and China, to discuss likely responses to North Korean instability, while keeping its ally Japan informed.

All three governments should be prepared to offer reassurances to reduce the likelihood of miscalculation in the event of instability in North Korea.  For example, the US could assure that it would work with the United Nations; would coordinate with China to secure WMD facilities, materials, and expertise; and would not station troops north of the 38th parallel after stabilization and reconstruction operations are completed.  At the same time, the allies should seek assurances from Beijing that it would not intervene in North Korea’s domestic political situation to prop up a failing regime and would not obstruct ROK reunification efforts.  Moreover, all three nations should agree that their armies would not engage each other in the North, and that no nation would exploit instability in the DPRK as an excuse to threaten any other state.

Despite forecasts of North Korea’s collapse since the death of Kim Il Sung in 1994, the country is still intact.  But the risk of North Korean instability remains real.  Every day that Kim Jong-il’s health continues to deteriorate without clear succession arrangements makes political instability after his death or debilitation all the more likely.  And, every day that the regime continues to develop nuclear weapons and missiles or to pursue destabilizing actions makes the effects of instability all the more dangerous.
