History

The original idea of the game was born in 1979, when Toru Iwanati, 25, was eating. According to legend, Iwanati had just cut a pizza when, to take the first portion, looked what was left of it: a circle with a sort of mouth. At that time he got the idea of a new video game. In early 1980, with the help of programmer Shigeo Funaki and three company employees, Toru finished programming the videogame, which was dubbed “Puck Man”, the same name which was its main character.In Japanese, “Puck” comes from the onomatopoeic paku, which corresponds to the sound that occurs when opening and closing the mouth, which is very appropriate for a character who spent all his time eating “pills” white in a maze.

The Italians don’t play when it comes to tax evasion and financial crimes, with a special branch of the army called the Guardia di Finanza solely devoted to busting those who play with numbers. Flavio Briatore is one of the most recent big fish caught in the Guardia’s net; his $22-million yacht, Force Blue, was impounded over the weekend off the coast of the Italian Riviera.

The perma-tanned Briatore keeps the yacht registered in the Cayman Islands and claims it’s hired out by the week, but Italian authorities contend that Briatore spends a hefty portion of the year on the vessel. In fact, when the dawn raid was carried out, Briatore’s wife and son were on board. If customs authorities can prove VAT evasion, Briatore could be on the hook for a fine of $5 million.

Given that Briatore owns and operates a $22-million yacht, he probably won’t have a hard time paying the penalty. He shouldn’t feel bad either way, since he joins luminaries such as Bank of America, soccer club Juventus, and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il on the list of folks nabbed by the Guardia di Finanza.

It would seem that the only good time Lewis Hamilton had at the Australian Grand Prix was when he was actually smoking the tires of his loaner Mercedes C63 AMG. Once that burnout was complete, though, the wheels came off: Hamilton got nicked by the police under Melbourne’s anti-hoon laws, had the car impounded, qualified 11th for the race and finished sixth.

And it’s not over: Lewis has been officially charged by a Melbourne court with intentionally losing control of a vehicle. A summons for a court date of August 24 was given to his Australian solicitor, but with the Belgian Grand Prix taking place on August 29 the chance of his appearing on that date seems slim. If nothing else, charging a former Formula 1 world champion – and Swiss resident, to boot – is the best lesson to every non-world-champion out there who plans to visit Melbourne: Do. Not. Hoon. It’s not often that a race car manufacturer gets to celebrate the production of its 1,000th unit, but that’s exactly what happened at Radical Sportscars this week. It has taken Radical 13 years to reach this milestone, and the SR2 has accounted for over half that volume. Radicals compete in a wide variety of series worldwide, including four runs in the 24 hours of Le Mans with the LMP2-class SR9 model.

Radical has also shown off a concept for a battery-powered race car dubbed the SRZero. Developed in cooperation with the Energy Futures Lab at Imperial College London, the SRZero sends energy from its 550-volt battery through a pair of electric motors that produce a combined 400 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The SRZero appears to be based on the SR3 chassis, and whether it will ever compete is unclear. Also unknown: how far the SRZero can go on a charge. Evidently, it supports simultaneous charging from two outlets.

“What jobs recovery?” you might ask.

Fair point, though we’ve obviously seen some improvement on the jobless claims and non-farm payrolls (even ex-Census) front in recent periods.

That being said, this week’s initial jobless claims number was higher than expected, and as this chart from Hale Stewart at FiveThirtyEight.com shows, it looks as though we’ve stalled out on this front.

What will be scary is if this starts to make a break back towards the 500K level — a number we haven’t seen in awhile.

By now you’ve read a million stories on China’s aggressive acquisition of natural resources all over the world, but here’s a story with a little bit of a twist.

In Australia and New Zealand, Beijing is spending millions to fund upstart miners in the hopes of undermining the world’s big two: Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton.

The New Zealand Herald reports that Chinese state-owned enterprises have funded at least 20 firms, in order to bust the big duopoly.

Whereas in the past, only the big ones could compete for large-scale resource deals, Chinese money is changing the playing field:

In Fortescue’s 2009 annual report to shareholders, [CEO Andrew] Forrest wrote that his company was battling against BHP and Rio Tinto on their home mining turf of the Pilbara, a northern region possessing the nation’s richest iron ore deposits.

“Your company has shattered the iron ore duopoly which existed in the Pilbara for many decades and firmly established itself as a vital alternative supplier of iron ore,” wrote Forrest.

Not only is China trying to bust the duopoly through cash, some suspect it’s using non-market means, like its pursuit of Rio Tinto execs on spying charges (a charge that originally came after Rio Tinto and BHP tried to merge, a scuttled deal that originally prompted howls of outrage in Beijing).

Bottom line, there’s probably tons of money to be made selling commodities to China over the coming years. Who actually wins big, however, remains an interesting question.

Jose Lima, former major league pitcher, died at the age of 37 in his home at Los Angeles. Dorca Astacio, wife of Jose Lima, said that Jose died of heart attack. She stated, “Jose was complaining while sleeping and I just thought he was having a nightmare. I called the paramedics, but they couldn’t help him.” He played for the Tigers, Royals, Mets and Dodgers.

Frank McCourt, owner of Dodgers, issued the following statement after Lima’s death, “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Jose Lima. Though he was taken from us way too soon, he truly lived his life to the fullest and his personality was simply unforgettable. He had the ability to light up a room and that’s exactly what he did every time I saw him. His memorable contributions to the Dodgers in 2004 and throughout baseball will always be remembered. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to his family during this extremely difficult time.”

Lima played for the Dodgers for one season. However, he made the club as a non-roster invitee following Spring Training of 2004 and then went 13-5 during the regular season that lead the Dodgers to their first National League West Division Championship since 1995.

Jose Lima spent 13 seasons in the big leagues for five different teams, counting multiple stints with the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. After winning 21 games with the Houston Astros in 1999, Jose Lima nearly set a Major League record by allowing 48 home runs the following season. In 2005, he have marked the history for the worst ERA of all time for a pitcher with at least 30 starts.

Since 2008, Jose Lima has pitched for professional baseball teams in South Korea, California and Canada.

Unthinkable, an upcoming suspense thriller, has caused hype due to its trailer. The story begins with a Muslim extremist , played by Michael Sheen, who plants three bombs each in a different location in the United States. The person is then apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He is interrogated by FBI agent Helen Brody played by Carrie-Anne Moss. Though Brody is an expert in the field but unfortunately, she fails to make progress. Brody is forced to call the badass freelance interrogator, “H”, played by Samuel L. Jackson. H tortures the Muslim extremist which is against the principles of Brody. Brody constantly protects the rights of the terrorist. Questions on which is right and wrong, fear and cruelty coupled with the morals of a person arise. The movie is directed by Gregor Jordan and scripted by Peter Woodward and Oren Moverman.
