  • Google Aims To Simplify Mobile Shopping With Chrome [Google I/O]

According to Google, the abandonment rate of shopping carts on mobile is a whopping 97%. With that, they’re providing an HTML5 autocomplete function in mobile Chrome to fill out info in three steps: checkout button, review billing and shipping, and submit. That’s down from these 21 steps, as outlined during today’s Google I/O keynote:

    1. Checkout Button
    2. Sign in or Guest
    3. Billing name
    4. Credit Card Type
    5. Cred Card Number
    6. Expiration – MM
    7. Expiration – YY
    8. Credit Card CSC
    9. Billing Address
    10. Billing City
    11. Billing State
    12. Billing Zip
    13. Billing Country
    14. Shipping Address
    15. Shipping City
    16. Shipping State
    17. Shipping Zip
    18. Shipping Country
    19. Shipping telephone
    20. Contact Email
    21. Submit

So yeah, it’s easy to see where Google’s model could be a bit more helpful.

The Verge, liveblogging the event, says, “BIg play from Google to take its payment service to mobile in a subtle way.”

  • Chrome Now Has Over 750 Million Active Users [Google I/O]

Earlier, Google announced that Android has seen over 900 million activations. After talking about Android and Google Play for about an hour, the Google I/O keynote shifted to Chrome.

Last year Chrome had 450 million monthly active users. Since then, it has added over 350 million new users in last 12 months.Today, it has over 750 million active users.

Much of the new Chrome use comes through mobile, according to Google’s Sundar Pichai. He also talked up the Chromebooks (coming out from an increasing number of partners) and Chrome OS.

Google also showed off a new Chrome experiment inspired by The Hobbit.

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Stock Android
There are still two hours left in Google’s I/O 2013 keynote, but there have already been some big announcements… for developers. Product news is flowing too now, thankfully, and Google just announced a new version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 that runs a stock version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Google will sell the phone unlocked with 16GB of memory for $649 beginning June 26th, and it will support T-Mobile and AT&T networks, including AT&T’s LTE network.

  • Android Up To 900 Million Activations [Google I/O]

You knew there would be the obligatory numbers flexing for Android today, and Google didn’t waste a lot of time (unless you count the time they took to play a pointless animation leading up to the stat).

Sundar Pichai kicked off the Google I/O keynote talking about Google’s various platforms, and announced that Android is now up to 900 million activations in 2013.

He noted that there are seven billion people on the planet, and that Google thinks “the journey is just getting started.”

Most of the world has Android penetration of less than ten percent, but it’s growing very fast, according to Pichai. The focus is to get these people online.

Google has seen 48 billion app installs from Google Play, with 2.5 billion installs in the last month alone, and paid out more money to developers this year already than all of last year. Revenue per user is two and a half times what it was a year ago (globally), the company says.

  • Google I/O 2013 kicks off: Android is taking over the world – activations reach 900M

    Android Activations 900 Million
Google just kicked off this year’s Google I/O conference and we’re in store for quite a show. The keynote is scheduled to run for three hours — yes, three hours — and Google SVP Sundar Pichai started off the show by announcing cumulative Android activations have now reached 900 million. Google also announced Google Play has topped 48 billion app installs, including 2.5 billion installs in the last month alone. Revenue per user for Android apps is now 2.5 times more than it was a year ago, according to Google.

  • Google Apps set for a communication upgrade with deeper Google+ integration

There may not be any new hardware announced at Google I/O, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any surprises. Multiple sources have told us that Google is going to bring Google+ into Google Apps as a back-end communications system, allowing you to talk to co-workers while simultaneously working on a document.

    Google-io

Sources say that as cloud-base collaboration is becoming more and more important, Google is looking to introduce Google Circles and other concepts like Google Hangouts to its Apps users. You can already use Google+ within Google Apps for Business as a collaboration and sharing tool, but it doesn’t extend into the apps themselves.

We are told that Google Talk would give way to a new kind of a “unified messaging” product where focus is less on voice and more on data and video. More details will arrive later: make sure and check out our live blog here for the official news when it arrives.

These new Google+ social features are a good way to help reinvent the enterprise apps. The company has already been making some changes Like checking for sharing permissions for a Google docs when you email a link to people), but we will see something bigger in a few hours.

A good application of Google+ would mean company wide circles which would in turn allow easy communication and sharing of docs. This would put them in competition with Yammer, HipChat and other such products.

  • Jennifer Love Hewitt Billboard Discussed On Conan

Jennifer Love Hewitt appeared on Conan O’Brien, and discussed a billboard for the show The Client List that featured her in her underwear that had to be toned down because apparently someone was offended by her body.

This appears to be the billboard in question (Source: FameFlynet Pictures via StyleBistro):

    Jennifer Love Hewitt Billboard

“There was a bit of a scandal with the first billboards,” says Hewitt. “There was another one of me laying down in nude sort of bra and panties, and everybody loved it, watched the show…everybody was happy. There was one group of people who apparently were offended by the billboard, and were not into it….We still don’t know who it was. It happened in a magazine, but we don’t know who did the actual fixing of the photo, but they didn’t ask anybody if they could do it. They covered me up, and they actually made me like a cup and a half size smaller, and then covered everything.”

Conan noted that this was “un-American”.

Hewitt mentioned that nearby was a billboard of David Beckham in his underwear. “Like couldn’t have had a bigger situation in that billboard,” she said, “And he’s out there like ‘Hello!’…I had to have smaller boobs. It was very strange.”

  • Limelight Updates Orchestrate Digital Services Platform

Limelight Networks (LLNW) announced the next generation of its Orchestrate Digital Presence Platform, offering new features to help organizations better engage digital audiences. Orchestrate V2.0 includes a broad range of innovations that assist Limelight customers in leveraging video, rich media, web, and social content to create consistent digital experiences across channels, devices, and geographies.

Orchestrate is Limelight’s bid to move beyond its roots as a content delivery network (CDN) and provide value-added services to help publishers manage and track their content – especially video – across a complex universe of end-user devices.

“Whether their goal is driving revenue, increasing consumption, or influencing opinions; organizations today increasingly recognize the value of delivering an excellent digital experience,” stated Robert Lento, Limelight CEO. ”The Orchestrate Platform is the first digital presence platform to be fully integrated with a massively provisioned global network to ensure optimal user experience anywhere in the world.”

Orchestrate is designed as a framework for vertically-focused solutions, leveraging the physical reach of the network, the CDN software, and the SaaS applications that exist in a flexible application platform. Orchestrate services available today include content management, video, performance, content delivery, cloud storage, and insight. Version 2 enhancements include better integration across the portfolio, improved performance, customized policies controlling content around the globe – including geo-blocking, and better insight for real-time and historical analysis for live events.

“The Orchestrate platform offers customers the ability to leverage the power of video without compromising the essential insight necessary to deliver a personalized, optimized experience for their audience across all digital touch points,” said Scott Liewehr, president of Digital Clarity Group. ”This is a very compelling value proposition and a unique offering in the market today.”

An early adopter is the European operation of game maker Nintendo.

“As an international company, Nintendo of Europe touches customers in 22 countries, through a variety of consoles and games. To inform and update our customers, we need a powerful set of tools to deliver a consistent and consistently superior experience on our websites,” said Enis Sari, manager online service team, European Online & CRM, Nintendo Europe. “When Nintendo began evaluating potential solutions, we chose the Limelight Orchestrate platform. Our goal is closely aligned with the Limelight vision — by integrating video with content delivery, Orchestrate 2.0 provides a seamless experience for our customers. This is exactly what we need to stay competitive long term.”

The talk took place on April 2nd.

  • Hemlock Grove Season 2 Release Date Unannounced, But Highly Likely

Netflix’s most recent foray into original programming, Hemlock Grove, may not have debuted to the rave reviews of its predecessor, House of Cards, but it did outperform it in its early days. More people watched Hemlock Grove in the first two days of availability, as Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said during a recent company conference call.

Despite the lack of critical acclaim, people seem to like the show. This is usually how the horror genre works. And in the genre, when people want more, they usually get it. See franchises like Paranormal Activity and Saw (or more historically, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm St., etc.).

Netflix has not announced plans for a second season yet, but it’s hard to imagine the company killing one of the early cornerstones of its original programming experiment if it’s getting the viewers. But iewers aren’t just watching the show. They’re already anticipating more. Yes, already (it did just come out less than a month ago). This is no doubt a side effect of releasing an entire season’s worth of episodes at the same time.

Nevertheless, as Yahoo reports, there is a high volume of people searching for the release date of the second season, despite no announcement that it will even happen.

The involvement of Eli Roth (one of the show’s producers, who also directed the pilot) was, without a doubt, a huge part of the interest the show generated ahead of its release, but t’s hard to say how much he would be involved with a second season. He clearly has a lot on his plate (and some of us are still hoping he can find time to make “Thanksgiving“). Still, there’s no apparent reason that Netflix wouldn’t push forward with a new season with or without him.

There shouldn’t be a lack of material, based on reports of Brian McGreevy’s work on sequels to the novel upon which the show is based. Shock Til You Drop reported in April of last year:

McGreevy has a second Hemlock Grove novel nearing completion, with a third fully outlined, so expect at least two more seasons should the series find a following.

  • Galaxy S4 becomes Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone – 6 million shipped in two weeks

    Galaxy S4 Shipments
It was all but certain even before Samsung launched the Galaxy S4, but now it appears to be official: the Galaxy S4 is Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone ever. Korea-based  paper The Chosun Ilbo on Wednesday quoted an unnamed Samsung executive who shed some light on the blistering pace of Samsung’s S4 channel sales. In just five days following the smartphone’s launch, Samsung apparently sold 4 million units into channels. For comparison, the first Galaxy S line took 85 days for shipments to reach 4 million handsets, the Galaxy S II took 55 days and the Galaxy S III took 21 days. Through May 10th, two weeks after the Galaxy S4 began shipping, the anonymous executive said channel sales reached 6 million units. He also believes Samsung is on track to sell 10 million Galaxy S4 phones into channels by the end of May, which would be on par with analysts’ expectations.

  • The New Google Maps Is Real, And Here Are All The Cool New Things It Does

Last week, a couple screen caps of an apparently upcoming Google Maps redesign leaked. While the authenticity of these was questioned, it seemed likely that they were real. Now, it’s pretty much certain than they were, as another leak has sprung ahead of Google I/O.

DroidLife reported on a sign-up page for the new Google Maps leaking last night, and has shared screenshots of that. Luckily for those interested, this includes descriptions of all the new features, so we don’t have to wait for Google’s keynote today to learn about what it does (assuming this is where they are planning on unveiling it, which seems highly likely).

There are a lot of new features. Here is Google’s run down from the leak:

The most comprehensive map, now built for you: The new Google Maps draws you a tailored map for every search and click you make. So whatever you’re trying to find or wherever you’re trying to go, you’ll always have a map highlighting the things that matter most.

Discover more with every search: The new, smarter search box is your starting point for discovery. One search makes all the information you need available at a glance – read up on your destination, see ratings and reviews and sometimes, even take a peek inside.

Dive into your world: From outer space to the streets, the new Google Maps gathers all the imagery of a location into one spot making it easy to explore your world from every angle.

Earth View: The things you love about Google Earth are now directly integrated into the map, so you can see the planet without a plug-in. Or a passport. *Available on WebGL-enabled browsers.

Flight Search: New flight directions help you find flight options, ticket prices, and estimated travel times right on the map.

Find the best way there: You can now compare multiple modes of transportation right on the map to find the best way there and the best way home.

A map that gets better with use: As you search the map, star places you like and leave reviews, the map starts to adapt and can suggest things like restaurants you might enjoy or the quickest way home. In other words, the more you use the new Google Maps, the more helpful it becomes.

It’s a pretty big overhaul, and one that seems like it will only make Google’s hugely popular maps service all the more useful, though we’ll have to wait until people can start using it to truly now how good the revamp is.

It will be interesting to see if any complaints come out from competitors. Don’t forget the FairSearch Coalition was formed because of Google’s Flight Search feature, and it looks like they’re making that a much more prominent part of the Google experience.

  • Study suggests Google Glass could be a smash hit

    Google Glass Study
Google Glass is expected to be a pretty big focus at Google I/O this year, but it’s still unclear how the public at large will receive Google’s connected eyewear when it launches next year. In an effort to assess its odds in the U.S. market, BiTE Interactive commissioned YouGov to conduct a study on the matter. According to a poll of 1,000 American smartphone owners aged 18 and above, “only” one in 10 respondents said they would be willing to wear Google Glass regularly, regardless of the device’s price. The study also found that 45% of those polled said they believe Google Glass is “too socially awkward” or “too irritating” to wear, and 44% said they simply don’t find any of Glass’ known features to be desirable.

  • The TechStars startup empire expands to Austin with new program

TechStars must have a hankering for live music, barbecue, Google Fiber and some awesome enterprise-focused startups, because the Boulder, Colo.-based accelerator program is opening an Austin class. This won’t be TechStars’s first rodeo in the state — its TechStars Cloud program is hosted out of San Antonio in part because it has ties to Rackspace, which is headquartered there.

“There’s so much happening in Austin, it was place we had been wanting to expand to, and especially with the cloud program in San Antonio we had a lot of visibility because of proximity,” said Jason Seats, the managing director of TechStars Austin. “It was always a matter of when and not if.”

Seats, who was the former managing director of TechStars cloud, is moving about 90 miles up I-35 to take over the Austin class of startups. He told me that TechStars will, “keep the cloud program basically as it is. I’ll be involved with it but we are working on filling the director role.”

The Austin program won’t have an explicit theme and joins programs in Boston, Boulder, Chicago, New York City, Seattle, Wash. and London. TechStars Austin will provide $18,000 in financing and the option of a $100,000 convertible debt, but the most valuable aspect for most will be mentoring from establish entrepreneurs and other program participants.

In an interview with me, Seats said he is looking for about 10 companies for the first class that will run from August 5 to Nov. 1. TechStars looks for founding teams with an idea who want to take that idea to the next level. Generally that means companies seeking outside financing, but as the head of a former boot-strapped startup (SliceHost, which sold to Rackspace) Seats is happy to bring those in as well.

As for connecting with the Austin entrepreneurial community, including the existing Capital Factory incubator, Seats has laid the groundwork. He notes the Capital Factory founders Joshua Baer and Bill Boebel are already TechStars Austin investors and mentors, and both Seats and Baer are planning to work together, despite both running accelerator programs. “The last thing we want to do is cleave the ecosystem,” Seats said.

Seats has also reached out to support from the venture community in Austin, notably Austin Ventures, but also to Silverton Partners and local angels. He expects to see a lot of enterprise software deals given that Austin has a track record of building and then selling or taking such companies public. That’s a plus from his perspective since he views enterprise software as “the first cousin of the cloud,”

“I’ve spent the last two weeks canvassing the city and meeting the CEOs and founders and operators and investors, and the depth of talent and expertise is excellent,” Seats told me. “I have one data point of experience building and running a company, but I’ve met with so many people in Austin who have run and sold their companies and are on their third or fourth of fifth thing.”

That experience, plus more visibility provided by TechStars, should only help Austin and its entrepreneurs get even more experience.

  • Completely redesigned Google Maps leaks ahead of I/O

    Google Maps Redesign
The days leading up to a big industry event like Google I/O are always packed with leaks and this week has been no different. Among the details trickling out ahead of Google’s big day is confirmation that a complete overhaul of Google Maps will debut during the keynote on Wednesday. Or, it would have debuted had Google not leaked it ahead of time. Droid Life managed to grab screenshots of the new Google Maps’ sign-up page when it accidentally went live briefly on Tuesday night, and they reveal what appears to be a terrific reimagining of Google’s popular mapping service. Changes include a brand new layout, new search features and new ways to highlight the “things that matter most.” Additional images showcasing Google Maps’ new design follow below and the rest of the screenshots can be viewed by following the source link beneath them.
