Irrigators will find the new RemoteCONNECT™ Telemetry System from McCrometer enhances irrigation by delivering up-to-date flow data via the Internet for centralized monitoring and control, which takes the guesswork out of water management and frees irrigators to focus on other critical tasks.
The RemoteCONNECT System is a turn-key wireless remote monitoring system with 24/7 capability, which reduces costly manual data collection. McCrometer, the irrigation industry’s most trusted flow meter supplier for 55 years, now provides a single go-to source for automated flow measurement system hardware, software, installation, training, support and field service.
RemoteCONNECT comprises all the components necessary for web-based data collection from McCrometer’s Mc® Propeller Meter, or meters from other manufacturers as well as other ag water management sensors. McCrometer has developed two different RemoteCONNECT systems to meet the needs of irrigators with unique needs. Both systems are expandable over time and can be configured to provide soil moisture, water level, water salinity and rainfall data, helping prevent over-watering to reduce costs.
RemoteCOM Telemetry System
The RemoteCOM Telemetry System supports up to 25 flow meter radio transmission units, which feed data to a satellite base station that sends data to a secure web server. With the RemoteCOM Telemetry System, one satellite base station supports 25 propeller meters and makes the system a highly economical solution for multiple meter sites and large distributed irrigation systems.
SatCOM Telemetry System
McCrometer also has developed a SatCOM Telemetry System that is designed for remote locations. The SatCOM Telemetry System supports one flow meter radio transmission unit that sends data directly to a secure web server. This system can acquire data on demand and control equipment in the field.
RemoteCONNECT Online Interface
McCrometer’s RemoteCONNECT online interface is a secure-access, web-based irrigation management tool. It features an easy-to use graphical-user interface that provides flow rate and totalizer data for each propeller meter with a wide range of sophisticated monitoring, alarming and control tools.
Web access to flow data also eliminates the need for local office data servers and modems. Remote data can be collected at customer specified intervals from 30 minutes to 24 hours. A Google Earth view of the site is available too.
With McCrometer’s online RemoteCONNECT, irrigators can monitor water-use quotas, set alarms to indicate high/low usage rates, look at well site images and track data by individual Farm number. Individual flow meters can be accuracy checked for hours flowed, volume and size of meter. Low battery alerts are provided as well. Graph and trend line analysis tools are built-into the system.
Comprehensive availability of flow data tells irrigators how water is applied to ensure accurate billing and water allocation records. This information alerts irrigators when they are close to exceeding allocation limits. Notifications can even be provided to multiple specific users via email and text messaging or paging.

Dayton, Ohio — Motoman has added two new models, the SIA5D and the SIA50D, to its SIA-series (slim, individual arm) robot line. Lean and powerful, these robots feature a revolutionary actuator-based 7-axis design with best-in-class wrist performance characteristics that enable amazing freedom of movement, coupled with the ability to maneuver in very tight areas. These agile, versatile robots open up a wide range of industrial applications to robots and are ideal for assembly, injection molding, machine tending and a host of other applications.
Short axis lengths and extreme motion flexibility allow these slim manipulators to be positioned out of the normal working area (i.e. floor-, ceiling-, wall-, incline- or machine-mounted) without limiting the motion range of any axis. Mounting the SIA-series robots between two machine tools provides open access to the machines for fixture maintenance, adjustment or testing. Additionally, the operator has clear access to the machine operator station for entering offsets, maintenance or other operations.
SIA-series robots are controlled by the next-generation Motoman DX100 robot and system-level controller that uses patented multiple robot control technology to easily handle multiple tasks including control of up to eight robots (72 axes), as well as I/O devices, and communication protocols. Featuring a robust PC hardware architecture, the DX100 controller uses a Windows® CE programming pendant with color touch screen.
Underground Racing – Twin-Turbo Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
There are a select few players in the market with production vehicles that hit a top speed higher than 250 mph; however, Lamborghini and Ferrari aren’t one of them. As consumer behavior takes an expected twist towards fuel-efficiency (and as governments set higher fuel-economy regulations), supercar manufacturers have vowed to offer more economical sports cars.
Well, thank god for people like Underground Racing, which recently exceeded 250 mph in their highly modified Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera with their 1500-WHP twin-turbo package.
The event took place at The Texas Mile, where Richard Holt piloted the twin-turbo Gallardo Superleggera to a top speed of 250.1 mph.
You may recall the controversy over Google reacting too aggressively in pulling down music blog posts (or entire blogs) based on DMCA takedown notices. Eventually, Google revamped its DMCA policy to better handle the situation, though there have still been some complaints. Tim Dickinson alerts us to a similar situation with Twitter — except the details suggest it’s much worse, and involves a clear abuse of the DMCA (which Twitter should be standing up to).
The story involves a music blogger named JP, who runs the appropriately named JP’s blog. Not surprisingly, JP also has a Twitter account, where he mostly seems to post links to his blog posts. One such post was about the leak of the new album by The National. That post includes a link to Amazon where people can purchase the new album… and also a link to a download of one song (in MP3 format) from the album.
Someone — and it’s not at all clear who — apparently filed a DMCA claim over the Twitter message about the leak, and Twitter responded by taking down the tweet and sending JP a note:
jp917, Apr 22 03:10 pm (PDT):
Hello,
The following material has been removed from your account in response to a DMCA take-down notice:
Tweet: http://twitter.com/jp917/statuses/12499491144 — New Post: Leaked: The National — High Violet http://jpsblog.net/2010/04/20/leaked-the-national-high-violet/
There are all sorts of problems with this that suggest a pretty big abuse of the DMCA, but first we should address a couple problems with JP’s blog post about this situation. First, he puts the blame fully on Twitter, claiming that it’s “Twitter” sending the DMCA takedown notices. That’s not really true. Twitter is receiving a takedown notice (in theory) from the copyright holder, and Twitter is merely responding to that takedown and notifying the user. Second, JP claims that he only linked to Amazon and not to a download, but looking at his blog post, there are two clear links to a single song from the album — one at Mediafire and the other via Box.net. He makes no claim that these are authorized, so perhaps they are potentially infringing, which makes things a bit messier. It is true that his main link is to Amazon, encouraging people to purchase, but there are those MP3 links as well (though, again, only to a single song, not the whole album).
Even so, this whole thing is troubling and a clear abuse of the DMCA — which you would hope Twitter would stand up against. Specifically, nothing in the tweet itself is infringing — which means that the DMCA takedown for the tweet is bogus, and a violation of the DMCA itself. Even if there was a link in the post that’s infringing, we’re talking about a takedown on a tweet that links to a blog that links to a potentially infringing file. That tweet itself is not a violation of copyright law in any way, and the takedown notice is clearly fraudulent. Pretending that anything that links to a page that links to a potentially infringing file is, by itself, copyright infringement, is clearly ridiculous.
On top of that, there have already been questions asked about the copyrightability of Twitter messages, and it’s rare that such tweets would be covered by copyright. In this case, it’s unlikely that there’s any copyright (the tweet was just a headline, and for the most part, you can’t copyright headlines). Even if it was covered by copyright, it would be JP’s copyright for having written the headline. In other words, there’s nothing in the tweet that is held as a copyright by someone else, and thus the takedown message itself was a clear abuse of the DMCA — and a violation of basic First Amendment principles, as the takedown sought not to takedown copyrighted material (as allowed by the DMCA), but to silence conversation about a leak of an album through misuse of copyright law.
It’s unfortunate that Twitter decided to take the easy way out and automatically pull down the clearly non-infringing message with no review whatsoever. It’s actions like that which encourage more abuse of the DMCA. Doubly unfortunate is that nowhere does Twitter tell JP who sent the bogus takedown. It could be the band itself, or perhaps its label — which appears to be Beggars Group (who is generally not so bad on these sorts of things). Either way, this is unfortunate on multiple levels. The takedown notice was clearly bogus (whoever sent it) and Twitter’s response is unfortunate. I would have expected better from a company like Twitter.
Magna Seating, an operating group of Magna International, and Hollingsworth Logistics, a leading provider of industrial supply chain management, said today that they have formed won contracts to supply Volkswagen Group of America with complete seat systems for the new mid-size sedan that will be built at Volkswagen’s new Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant.
“This partnership is a great sign of things to come for everyone involved,” said Frank Fischer, President and CEO for Volkswagen in Chattanooga. “We are pleased that a minority-owned joint venture will be a part of our supplier team for the all-new mid-size sedan and that the addition of 120 jobs will continue to strengthen the economy here in the Tennessee Valley,” Fischer said.
Volkswagen plans to kick off production of the new mid-size sedan at Chattanooga in 2011. The new model will replace the Passat in the United States and CEO Stefan Jacoby says that the company has plans to sell 100,000 units annually. There are also plans to export the U.S. built sedan.

Every week John Hussman speculates on why the market shouldn’t but does keep rising.
(It shouldn’t because the price-to-normalization ratio is at extremes not seen since 2007 and 1929. It does because investors are stupid.)
He says this is the kind of market that investors who take valuations seriously find excruciating:
As of last week, the Market Climate in stocks remained characterized by an overvalued, overbought, overbullish, rising-yields syndrome that has historically produced periods of marginal new highs, slight declines, and yet further marginal highs, followed somewhat unpredictably by nearly vertical drops. I’ve often accompanied the description of this syndrome with the word “excruciating,” because the apparent resiliency of the market and the celebration of each fresh high, can make it difficult to maintain a defensive stance. Interestingly, the analysts at Nautilus Capital recently noted that the most closely correlated periods in market history to this one were the advances of 1929 and 2007. While exact replication of those advances would allow for a couple more weeks of further strength, we’ve generally found it dangerous to expect history to do more than rhyme. These hostile syndromes have a tendency to erase weeks of upside progress in a few days.
Dutch Landscape architecture firm West 8, working together with Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rogers Marvel, has released the master plan for Governors Island, a 172-acre island off the southern tip of Manhattan. The first phase of the master plan details the roll-out of 2.2 miles of waterfront promenades and a new 40-acre park. The new design features artificially-created hills that focus attention on the park’s center, as well as a “hammock grove,” a grotto-like shelter, athletic fields and marshlands, writes the The New York Times. The New York City government has allocated more than $40 million in funds to the new plan, but will need to raise more than $220 million for future phases of development. Control of the island recently passed from New York state to the city, enabling Mayor Bloomberg’s plans for the island to move forward.
The Governors Island master plan includes the development of a new ferry landing area and shaded lawn overlooking the Lower Manhattan skyline. According to Fast Company, a man-made canyon will also create framed views of the Statue of Liberty. The entire master plan call for a network of promenades to circle the entire island, but the first phase will cover only the northern half. Walking along the promenade, visitors will get views of everything from the Statue of Liberty to Brooklyn Heights.
In the future stages of development, pathways will lead further south through sloping lawns, leading to the hammock grove. Nicolai Ouroussoff, architecture critic for The New York Times, describes the area: “Scores of hammocks will be suspended in a forest of oak and birch trees. In a rendering that shows the hammocks sagging under the weight of people napping inside them, they bring to mind human-size cocoons.” Also, under development is a new cafe designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro at the water’s edge. “A lawn expands out onto the building’s roof, where visitors will be able to climb down through a large hole into a grotto-like shelter open to the water.”
The southern end of the island will feature man-made marshes and tidal basins. “A raised concrete walkway wraps around the marshes at the tip of the island, so that visitors should feel as if the edge of the land were dissolving around them. To add to the sensory experience, [Adriaan] Geuze [of West 8] plans to plant the area with strong-smelling plants, like sea asparagus and lavender.” The marshes may be designed as “green” or “soft” infrastructure, providing a natural system to accomodate sea level rises that threaten New York City. Geuze of West 8 seems very focused on climate change and incorporating adaptation schemes into his designs (see earlier post).
Ourrossoff says the site’s building plans are still in flux. New York University is exploring adding dormitories and classroom space. There’s also discussion about luxury hotels or a conference center.
He also contends that while Mayor Bloomberg’s ambitious park plans are “democratic” and will benefit many New Yorkers, they also end up raising property values of buildings nearby, accelerating gentrification. “Sitting in the middle of the harbor, [Governors Island] ought to be accessible to working-class families from Staten Island and the Lower East Side of Manhattan, as well as to wealthier downtowners and Red Hook’s bourgeois bohemians. The nature of the developments that flank the park will be critical to determining whether the island feels as if it belongs to all of them, or just to those few who can afford to pay for its upkeep.”
Despite the equity issues that will need to be addressed, Ouroussoff concludes that the new park, together with Michael Van Valkenburgh’s new set of parks along the Brooklyn waterfront (see earlier post), mean a “shift in the character of the city’s park system as a whole that is as revolutionary as Robert Moses’ early public works projects or Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s Central Park.”
In other Governors Island news, Ann Ha and Behrang Behin’s “Living Pavilion” won the City of Dreams Pavilion competition sponsored by FIGMENT, the Emerging New York Architect Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY). The winning project will be assembled on Governors Island this spring, and will be open to the public from June 6 through October 3. “Living Pavilion is a low‐tech, zero‐impact structure that employs reclaimed milk crates as the framework for growing a planted green wall surface.”

BMW, which has trailed behind Lexus as the No.2 luxury brand in the U.S. for the past decade, is unlikely to benefit from the Japanese brand’s recall woes. Analysts say that BMW will probably come in at the No.2 spot again in 2010.
BMW sales will be suppressed this year by the wind down of the old 5-Series, says BMW AG global sales chief Ian Robertson. The 5-Series accounts for about 25 percent of BMW’s sales volume in the United States.
“Effectively, we’ve run out our existing 5 Series and won’t launch our new 5 Series until June,” Robertson said. “So a full-year effect won’t be felt. We still see we will have some growth this year, but it’s a few digit points. How that turns out with competitors’ volumes remains to be seen.”
Analysts say that Lexus has been hurt by parent Toyota’s recall issues and the recent recall of the Lexus GX. However, Lexus sales were still up 42 percent to 20,219 vehicles in March, compared with 2009. During the first quarter of 2010, Lexus sales were up 18 percent to 49,523 vehicles.

By numerous accounts, this spring has been the most brutal in years for seasonal allergy sufferers. (Do I see some nodding heads out there?) As much as everyone looks forward to spring, some folks grit their teeth for several weeks or live on a steady dose of allergy pills. I always get questions this time of year from folks who are looking for ways to get through spring a little happier and maybe less medicated. Here’s one such email from reader Joyce….
Dear Mark,
I’m from the Upper Midwest where spring came early this year. No complaining about that, mind you – we earn our warm season! I’ve always had problems in spring, but this year I’ve been in really bad shape (like everybody what I hear). I’m relatively new to your site, and I’m slowly adopting elements of the Primal Blueprint. So far, it’s been going great! It’s got me thinking though about diet and whether what I eat/don’t eat can make any difference. What’s your take on this? I’d love any recommendations that could get me in the garden earlier!
Although the extent of people’s allergies (as well their sources) span a wide spectrum, anyone who spends whole months blowing through Kleenexes can likely benefit from a few adjustments – especially those new to the PB.
First, what to avoid… One of the best strategies to alleviate those miserable symptoms is to steer clear of alcohol and other histamine containing foods. As far as alcohol goes, wine (both red and white) seem to be the worst instigators. Sulfites are part of the issue with these drinks, but histamines that result during the fermentation process also wreak havoc. If you have allergy issues, consider avoiding other foods subject to aging and fermentation like aged cheese, pickles, and sauerkraut. And as for yeast, it’s one more reason to ditch bread. Grapes and ciders can be culprits as well.
Also, if you know the source of your particular allergy, you can further pinpoint foods that tend to trigger what’s called “oral allergy syndrome,” a reaction to allergen-related foods that affects primarily the lips and mouth. Check out the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia information on cross-reactive foods for those with seasonal allergies.
As for what to eat, think anti-inflammatory. It just so happens that the PB delivers just that. Research supports the particular benefits of fresh produce, fish and nuts for reducing both the symptoms of existing allergies as well as the development of allergies later in life. Research on the pregnancy and childhood diets of Spanish children found that a higher intake of certain vegetables (like tomatoes and eggplant) and fish offered protective benefit from allergies and asthma. Another study with Greek children linked high intake of nuts, fruits and vegetables with a lower risk for respiratory allergy. The EPA and DHA in fish and fish oils has been shown to be among the best preventative options for allergic disorders.
Want more? Tea, particularly green or white, offers a big flavonoid boost that reduces inflammation and supports general immune function. For raw dairy enthusiasts out there, farm milk consumption was shown to provide similar protective advantage against allergy and asthma whether or not the children drinking it lived on the farm or not.
Although antioxidants and flavonoids in general offer therapeutic benefit, certain nutrients like vitamin C and quercetin are potent natural antihistamines. An extra dose of magnesium can help alleviate wheezing symptoms. Some folks report success with spirulina as well. As for herbal remedies, butterbur shows good promise, but isn’t for women who are pregnant or nursing.
Another recommendation? Buy some wild – and local – honey. Because bees pick up the pollen of their environment, the resulting honey can offer something of a therapeutic dose for gradual desensitization – much like an allergy shot. It’s important to start small (1/4 teaspoon daily – max) and work your way up to gradually build tolerance.
Last, my own nearly debilitating seasonal allergies literally disappeared when I got rid of grains (and cut the chronic cardio). It may have been related to the autoimmune connection between anti-nutrients/leaky-gut and hypersensitivity to proteins in grass seeds and pollen (grains are grass seeds). Many MDA readers report a dramatic reduction in hay fever or allergy symptoms when cutting grains.
Good luck to Joyce and everyone else who’s laying low for another couple weeks. Let me know your thoughts, and do share any other anti-allergy strategies that have worked for you! As always, thanks for the great questions and comments, and keep ‘em coming. Have a great Monday everybody!
Porsche says that it has almost 900 potential buyers for its new 918 Spyder, a plug-in hybrid open-top supercar with a mid-mounted V8. Porsche will probably decide to build the model once 1,000 potential customers have pledged interest, Porsche’s development chief, Wolfgang Duerheimer, said in an interview at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show.
“I’m confident that we will soon reach the threshold of 1,000,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg. “We need 1,000 seriously interested people to make a sound business case.”
“We’re very optimistic that we’ll be able to further expand our leading position in the sports-car segment,” he said.
Refresher: Power for the Porsche 918 Spyder Concept comes from a 3.4L mid-mounted V8 making 500-hp. The engine is mated to two electric-motors sitting on the front and rear axle with an additional output of 218-hp. Power is driven to the wheels by Porsche’s 7-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe PDK transmission, allowing the 918 Spyder Concept to go from 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 198 mph. Drivers are allowed to choose from four different driving modes including E-Drive, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid and Race Hybrid. The E-Drive mode lets the 918 Spyder concept run on pure electricity with a range of 16 miles.
There’s a great interview with the eccentric hedge fund manager Hugh Hendry of Eclectica Capital in Investment Week.
Here’s the short version of what he said:
On the China “bubble”: “China has not demonstrated an ability to create wealth. It has demonstrated an ability to create GDP growth, which is a function of spending money…Infrastructure projects and steel plants that are publicly commissioned…If you build a high-speed rail link and anticipate it improving the productivity of the economy over the next 10 years, but actually it does not, it means you will have to raise Government borrowing or tax the population to sustain the negative cashflow.” More on China from Hendry.
On what’s wrong with the investment world: “We have created a hunger just to make money, speculative money and damn the consequences almost – we are either all investing in houses or stocks, soon to be Chinese stocks with Anthony Bolton. But, it has also created a Pavlovian response where every crisis was an opportunity to buy more. I think time is receding, it is passing, it is leaving us behind. My difficulty is that I do not sell dreams. I live in the real world.”
On his investment strategy: “We are concerned about the world being profoundly deflationary and therefore are reluctant to take a lot of economic risk. So the businesses we select to buy today are large-cap names, so I can sell them and not be trapped in them. They are businesses that have a lack of economic sensitivity. I have a tremendous amount invested in the tobacco industry. I think it could survive a consumer depression.”
On inflation: It could reside in the future [especially if you ban short-selling]. “If you want to create inflation, what you will see is that we will have a ban on short selling. We will have a ban on naked credit default swaps.” Watch Hendry vigorously defend short selling.
The Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa by Zagato is not a design exercise, nor does it take inspiration from the 90 years of collaboration between Zagato and Alfa. The TZ3 Corsa race-car is basically a gift from Zagato to Alfa Romeo honoring 100 years of races and victories across the whole 20th century.
The TZ3 Corsa weighs in at only 1,870 pounds and is powered by a 4.2L dry sump V8 engine making 420-hp. Mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox. the TZ3 Corsa goes from 0-62 mph in less than 3.5 seconds with a top speed of more than 185 mph.
Think of it as a Alfa Romeo 8C with racing roots and history brought altogether.
Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa by Zagato:
Press release:
Milano, April 2010: Zagato Atelier announces the introduction of the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa at the XII Villa D’Este Concours d’Elegance.
The TZ3 Corsa is not a design exercise. It does not take inspiration only from the 90 year collaboration between the two brands, neither only from the Milanese conjunction between Alfa Romeo and Zagato.
The TZ3 Corsa is a race car, honouring 100 years of races and victories across the whole 20th century.
It celebrates men and machines of the Alfa Romeo Zagato common tradition:
Scuderia Ferrari of the 20’s and 30’s, Alfa Corse of the 40’s and 50’s, Autodelta of the 60’s and 70’s up to the latest Scuderia Zagato of the 80’s and 90’s.
Recalling these racing emotions, the TZ3 Corsa is based on a mono shell carbon fibre tubular chassis, coupled with a tubular frame and a lightweight aluminium body.
It boasts Technical Partners such as OMP and Pirelli.
Following Zagato’s gentlemen-driver heritage, the car has been commissioned by the Alfa Romeo Zagato collector Martin Kapp, during the Zandvoort Tribute to Zagato event, where more than 130 Alfa Romeo Zagatos were celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the brand.
Martin Kapp owns, among his Alfa Romeo Collection: SZ coda tonda and SZ coda tronca, TZ and TZ2, Junior Z and S.Z..
Tribute to the 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo’s Racing Heritage:
Alfa Romeo and Zagato achieved the best results since the beginnings thanks to the Mille Miglia victories of the 1500 6C, the 1750 GS and the 8C 2300 Zagato of the Scuderia Ferrari. Already in 1933 an official advert of the Alfa Romeo 8C proclaimed: “The Spider that, with the trio Alfa Romeo – Scuderia Ferrari – Carrozzeria Zagato, brought countless victories in the homeland and abroad for the honour of Italy.”
Even the grandiose Quadrifoglio Verde was placed on the bodies of Zagatos of the Alfa Corse team numerous times. Among the most glorious moments is the victory of the Formula 1 championship of Juan Manuel Fangio, aboard his Alfa Romeo 159 bodied by Zagato, as well as the victorious Alfa Romeo 3000 CM bodied in 3 samples by Zagato.
During the 60’s, the list of absolute victories of the Giulia TZ and TZ2 by Zagato for the Autodelta of Ing. Carlo Chiti, was never-ending. Some of the most memorable victories included the 1964 12 hours of Sebring, the Targa Florio, the Nurburgring, and the 24 hours of Le Mans.
The single-brand Alfa Romeo S.Z. championship emphasized the Alfa Romeo ES30’s (Experimental SportsCar 3000) technical and dynamic abilities. The S.Z. delivered, and continues to so today, constant performance and driving pleasure to the Gentlemen drivers of the Alfa Zagato team, across the most important racetracks in Europe.
