  • FILLPAK TT® CUT MECHANISM ENHANCES SPEED AND EFFICIENCY IN VOID FILL PACKING

RANPAK’S NEW FILLPAK TT® CUT MECHANISM ENHANCES SPEED AND EFFICIENCY IN VOID FILL PACKING

CONCORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio, February 11, 2010 – In support of more efficient and economical packing operations, Ranpak® – a leader in innovative paper packaging solutions – has launched a new cut device, FillPak TT® Cut Mechanism. The device can be customized to fit new and existing Ranpak FillPak TT® void fill converters to further enhance packing times and minimize material waste by allowing operators to automatically set and cut dispensed paper, rather than manually tearing it.

“As executives look for more ways to cut costs and add efficiency in fulfillment and packing operations, the FillPak TT Cut Mechanism is an easy decision to make,” said Donna Tohme, product manager, void fill, Ranpak. “It takes less than 30 minutes to upgrade a converter with this device, and it offers immediate payback in time and material saved. The ergonomically-correct cut of the paper allows packers to quickly dispense the right amount of paper the first time, every time.”

Equipped with an Electronic Delivery System (EDS) mode, FillPak TT Cut Mechanism allows operators to set a pad length from 12 inches to 10 feet, then dispense and cut the pads to length automatically or via a foot pedal command. The cutter customization offers all the same benefits of FillPak TT, including quick converting of single-ply, 15″ fanfold kraft paper at a speed of 60 inches per second; adjustable head dispenser for ease and comfort while packing; and compact design that easily fits into packing areas with limited space via a table or floor stand.

To help maintain uptime, the FillPak TT Cut Mechanism has an easy-to-remove cover that allows for quick access to machine internals in case of a paper jam, without the use of tools. Additionally, the cut mechanism operates off of the existing FillPak TT power supply and can run off battery power supply with adapter harness, in the event of a power outage.

In line with all of Ranpak’s paper products, the fanfold paper used with the FillPak TT Cut Mechanism is 100 percent recyclable and biodegradable. Ranpak’s turnkey solution of converter and paper products keeps the entire packaging life cycle in mind so time and waste are minimized and performance and recycling are emphasized.

  • No Surprise: If You Actively Promote The Fact That You Lead People To Infringing Content, Courts Will Smack You Down

I’d been avoiding writing about the Newzbin case, because, honestly, I didn’t have much to say about it — but people keep submitting it, so here’s a very quick post. Newzbin, one of a bunch of Usenet aggregators, was found liable for copyright infringement of its users in a UK court. The ruling doesn’t appear all that different from similar rulings elsewhere, with courts focusing on staff actively promoting the infringing nature of content on the site. In this case, it told site “editors” to promote works that were almost certainly infringing. Whether or not this makes sense in the larger picture, the message is clear: if you actively promote infringing activities, courts are not going to look kindly on your activities, even if the actual infringement is done by users. This trend has been clear for quite some time, and I’m still confused why any site would encourage its users to infringe these days. It’s just asking for a legal beatdown.

  • How Internet Filtering Blocks All Sorts Of Legit Info

This has been pointed out before, but it’s received less attention recently, despite the rise in interest in internet filters: the filters don’t work very well. In fact, Mitch Wagner went looking and found all sorts of examples of internet filters in schools blocking all sorts of legit info:

The Canadian National History Society was forced to change the name of its magazine, The Beaver, founded in 1920, because the name of the magazine caused it to be blocked by Internet filters.

One teacher wanted to show students some pictures that would illustrate the effects of atomic testing. “However when I went to bring the wikipedia page up at school during class, it was blocked by our internet filter, BESS. The name of the islands? ‘Bikini Atoll,’” said Doug Johnson, quoting the teacher. Johnson, a director of media and technology at a Minnesota school district, put out a call in July for stories about how Internet filtering hobbles education, and got an earful. (“Censorship by Omission”)

Johnson also shares a message from another teacher, describing how a school’s systems security manager decided to block the social bookmarking site delicous.com. The reason? You can use the site to search for porn….

The problem goes back for years. A filter blocked the Web site of former House Majoirty Leader Richard Armey because it detected the word “dick,” according to “Internet Filters, a public policy report,” a 2001 study from the Brennan Center of Justice. Other software blocked the Declaration of Independence, Shakespeare’s complete plays, “Moby-Dick,” and “Marijuana: Facts for Teens,” a brochure published by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Again, some of these stories appear to be old ones, which the filtering industry insists have been fixed, but these kinds of filters will always create false positives.

The bigger problem, honestly, is that the filters then lead to complacency. Once the schools have filters in place, it gives officials a false sense that things are “safe.” And yet, plenty of bad stuff gets through, while good stuff gets blocked. This isn’t to say that filters have no use at all, but it’s about time people learned not to rely on them so heavily.

Ancient Rome is a book written by Fiona MacDonald that is part of the excavating the past series of children’s books.  This book explores archeological excavations of Romans sites from Scotland to North Africa.  It highlights Roman architecture such as the Pantheon and the Colosseum and also discusses the cultural contributions Romans made to the world.  Ancient Rome is filled with colorful pictures of all the important Roman sites and provides plenty of details about each location.  Throughout the book there are words that are written in bold type and included in a glossary in the back of the book.

    Curriculum Connections
Ancient Rome can be used to introduce a lesson on the contributions ancient Rome made to the world in terms of architecture, daily life and sports.(3.1)  This is a wonderful book to use to instruct students on the impact the Romans had and continue to have.  Ancient Rome has a large amount of text so it is not appropriate for younger grades but this book can be a great resource for the upper elementary grades.

    Additional Resources

    • Three-dimensional model of the Pantheon this lesson plan provides information on Hadrian and how to make a model of the Pantheon.
    • Roman roads this is an information sheet on how the Romans built their roads.

  • Judge Tells IsoHunt To Wave Magic Wand; Block All Infringement

This really is not a huge surprise, but in the IsoHunt case the judge has now ordered site operator Gary Fung to magically stop anyone from infringing (Update: as noted in the comments this is just a “proposed” order, but it seems likely that this is where the judge is heading). It is, as Fung notes, effectively a shut down order. There’s no legitimate way for Fung to magically know what content is infringing and what is not, since his system is really no different than a search engine. While the original ruling concerned a few of Fung’s actions that the judge claimed were inducing, it looks like the judge won’t even give Fung a chance to try to set up a non-inducing search engine.

There are some odd statements in the ruling, including the judge claiming:

“It is axiomatic that the availability of free infringing copies of plaintiffs’ works through defendants’ websites irreparably undermines the growing legitimate market for consumers to purchase access to the same works,”

There’s just one (big) problem with that. It is not at all axiomatic. We’ve seen many content creators embrace file sharing as part of a legitimate market, and in doing so, make more money. So the judge is claiming something that is a universal truth that is false. That seems quite troubling.

Separately, the ruling seems to suggest that a keyword filter might stop the infringement. That takes me back. Judge Patel in the original Napster case made the same demand, and it was a disaster, because a keyword filter is useless.

But the bigger issue is that the judge seems to have gone way beyond what the law actually says and allows in this situation. The site can be barred for inducing infringement, but that doesn’t mean a site automatically must block anything that might be infringing.

  • Great Green Hope: The Corporate Love Affair With Algae

    algae1By Todd Taylor

The summer of 2009 was dubbed the “summer of algae” as industry, venture capital and the federal government committed more than a billion dollars to algae-related projects. Some may wonder why all this attention and whether it is deserved?  If the interest of large oil, chemical and food companies is any indicator, the answer is yes. According to Mary Rosenthal, executive director of the Algal Biomass Organization, the leading algae industry advocacy group, major companies are interested in algae as a long-term feedstock that is 100 percent renewable, feeding off of readily available nutrients, using non-arable land and non-potable water. Algae provide companies a way to beneficially reduce their carbon footprint. Add to that the opportunity to grow green technology jobs and even a skeptic can see why the algae industry is important.  Click here to read more…
