  • Renesas announces FreeRTOS support for new SH7216 MCU

Nuremberg, Embedded World 2nd – 4th March 2010 – Renesas Technology Europe announced today that it has partnered with the FreeRTOS program to provide FreeRTOS support for the new SH7216 microcontroller device. FreeRTOS is a portable, open source real time kernel that is currently the de facto standard in cross-platform operating systems for embedded microcontrollers. The announcement is significant as it represents the first official port of FreeRTOS for the SuperH line of microcontrollers from Renesas. The port will especially benefit customers wanting to use the SuperH in connectivity or real time applications. The combined hardware and software provides high performance along with ease of use, helping customers to get their applications up and running much more rapidly.
The SH7216 is one of Renesas’ newest and already one of the most successful microprocessors in the portfolio. It integrates the industry leading SH2-A core, capable of 200 MHz operation and 480 DMIPS, with an IEEE-compliant floating point unit. The SH-2A also enables extremely fast interrupt response (in as little as 30 ns) ensuring that the SH7216 can also be used for applications with a true “real-time” requirement.
Along with the high-performance core, the SH7216 includes up to 1MB MONOS flash, the industry’s fastest embedded flash available exclusively from Renesas.
The main peripherals of the SH7216 include multiple communication interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN and USB. For motor control it has two dedicated timer units, each capable of automatic deadtime insertion, deadtime optimisation and automatic synchronisation with the analogue to digital converter.
FreeRTOSTM is an open source embedded real time operating system. With more than 77,500 downloads in 2008 and over 7000 downloads per month it is amongst the world’s most popular and widely used embedded operating systems.
The operating system’s modified GPL license allows users to deploy applications without publishing their proprietary application code. Support for the FreeRTOS kernel across 24 architectures is provided by an active FreeRTOS user community.
FreeRTOS is compatible with the commercially supported OpenRTOS and can be upgraded to SafeRTOS, a SIL3 RTOS version that has been certified by TÜV SÜD for use in safety critical applications. This enables users to design and test applications for free and upgrade to a commercial licence at a later date.

  • Ergonomic glass handling: Lightweight top crane systems – for easy handling

“Handling equipment is only popular if it is easy to use,” states Stefan Herrmann, Branch Manager at Semcoglas in Nordhorn, commenting directly about a reason to provide the entire production hall with handling systems from the Bystronic glass group.

The entire hall at Nordhorn in Lower Saxony, which was commissioned in spring 2008, has a framework of lightweight top crane systems and lifts from the Bystronic glass Technology Center Bystronic Armatec. “At that time, the company asked for a fast and secure glass handling system, which could even be used by inexperienced operators,” explains Dietmar Weichsel, who is selling Bystronic glass handling equipment in northern Germany. For this reason, he suggested a combination of equipment for moving light and heavy glass plates at a single work station. With this system, he met exactly the needs of the customer, for whom the safety of his employees is of paramount importance.

    User-friendly equipment
“We want colleagues to move even the lightest of loads with handling equipment and this can be achieved only if the equipment is easy to use”, reports Stefan Herrmann from his experience. The Branch Manger especially appreciates the Easy-Lift from Bystronic glass: “Its thick hoisting tube, which compresses the air, allows extremely accurate operation,” he explains and demonstrates this fact on the glass loader of the production line for laminated safety glass. In general, the handling equipment of the Easy-Lift type is characterised by its rigid connection between the suction frame and the crane track, facilitating exact positioning of the glass lites. At the same time, the aluminium construction keeps the weight of the equipment itself to a minimum.

  • Roll-Tool Measuring & Setting System

for automated measuring and set-up of roll-tooling

The quest to reduce product change-over times is as old as rollforming itself. Over many years DREISTERN has spearheaded the development of tooling set-up time reduction.

With state of the art quick-change equipment, tooling change-over times currently range around ½ hour. Tooling change-over, however, is only one part of the equation. What really matters is the time spent from the last good part, until the first good part of a new product run has been produced.

Taking this into consideration productivity levels drop significantly! Reproduction of previously good settings remains problematic, even though the tooling used has been producing good parts before.

Reason enough for Dreistern to develop an automatic tooling measuring and tuning system. All measuring and fine tuning work will be performed off-line; your rollforming machine remains available for production. Productivity increases up to 20% will be possible; the running of small and less lucrative product orders becomes economically rewarding.

  • The PivaBend line

The bending methods and the modular line concept make PivaBend suitable for many different applications.

The types of bending methods utilized by PivaBend are suitable for use with materials with sensitive surfaces like pre-painted steel and aluminum. The material moves between stations and are clamped and folded without being scratched or dented.

The material is firmly clamped into place and cannot move during the bending process while the folding tools follow the material without moving over the surface. This ensures a continuous production and no costly scratches or rejects.

The PivaBend line concept optimizes material flow and productivity.

Punched blanks are either transported straight from a PivaPunch Center or loaded from pallets. Bent parts are discharged either by hand, using a robot for palletizing, or transported straight to a welding cell or assembling line.
The multi-station solutions are designed either in straight lines or at an angle depending on the factory layout.

    Part programming
Pre-programmed sections of all sides are stored in the line controller and combined with the blank size data for each CNC program.

  • Gulf Stream ‘is not slowing down’ by Richard Black, BBCnews

    Article Tags: BBC

The Gulf Stream does not appear to be slowing down, say US scientists who have used satellites to monitor tell-tale changes in the height of the sea.

Confirming work by other scientists using different methodologies, they found dramatic short-term variability but no longer-term trend. A slow-down – dramatised in the movie The Day After Tomorrow – is projected by some models of climate change.

The research is published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The stream is a key process in the climate of western Europe, bringing heat northwards from the tropics and keeping countries such as the UK 4-6C warmer than they would otherwise be.

It forms part of a larger movement of water, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which is itself one component of the global thermohaline system of currents.

  • Energy Secretary Admits We Don’t Understand Climate Change by Dennis T. Avery, CanadaFreePress

    Article Tags: Dennis T. Avery

Our Nobel-winning Energy Secretary is bravely soldiering forth to spend umpteen-trillion dollars of the public’s money to forestall a global warming he doesn’t understand?

Energy Secretary Stephen Chu recently spoke on global warming to the scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory—and told them we don’t understand it. “We don’t understand the downward trend that occurred in 1900 or in 1940. We don’t fully understand the plateau that’s happened in the last decade,” he concluded.

Our Nobel-winning Energy Secretary is bravely soldiering forth to spend umpteen-trillion dollars of the public’s money to forestall a global warming he doesn’t understand? That’s impressive honesty, especially as the vote on Obama’s proposed hefty energy taxes is coming before the Senate and he will have to support it. Real courage would be to tell the Senate that the computer models have failed “Prediction 101.”

At Oak Ridge, Dr. Chu was referring to the thermometer record, which tells us global temperatures rose sharply from 1860-1880, and then declined again until about 1915. The temperatures zoomed upward again from 1915 to 1940, only to decline moderately from 1940–1975. Recently, after another sharp temperature gain from 1976–1998, the earth has apparently has entered another of the moderate declines Dr. Chu can’t explain.

  • Forecasters at odds about warming threat by Jennifer Harper, Washington Times

    Article Tags: Newspaper Article

Is climate change a serious threat to humanity or a scam trumped up by agenda-minded activists?

Even the nation’s TV weathercasters can’t agree on that scientific dilemma, according to the largest survey of the profession to date released Monday by George Mason University’s Center for Climate Change Communication.

The majority — 63 percent — say global warming is caused “mostly by natural changes in the environment” compared with 31 percent who blamed the phenomenon on “human activities.” More than a quarter said they agreed that the phenomenon is “a scam.”

Another 48 percent said global warming should be a “low” priority for President Obama and Congress; one out of three felt is should be given “medium” priority; 23 percent felt is was of “high” importance.

The group is well aware of dissent in the research community as well: Sixty-one percent said there is “a lot of disagreement among scientists” about the issue.

But should climate change and global warming be a subject for their own broadcast coverage? Two-thirds said yes — though three-fourths also felt the subject was better suited for online discussions, “as many report concern about audience ‘backlash,’” the survey said.

Some prominent weathermen, however, are not buying into the theory.
