  • BMW trademark filings hint at Gran Coupe, Project i, performance diesel, electric offerings

According to findings by BMWBlog (they are a pretty trustworthy source of BMW news), BMW has filed some trademark registrations that give us a hint of some future models. However, keep in mind that most of the names registered by a car manufacturer may not be associated with a new model, they could be simply labeled as “placeholders.”

Here are BMW’s latest trademark registration filings.

    • M 50 d
    • Urbanic
    • Gran Coupe
    • Compactive
    • Compactive Tourer

Click through to see the full list.

    • E3
    • E4
    • E5
    • E6
    • E7
    • E8
    • E9

Now what shall we make of these trademarks?

M 50 d: Will most likely be a tri-turbo performance diesel model that will start with the 5-Series and make its way upward to the 6-Series.

Urbanic: Will be the specification for the MegaCity vehicles.

Gran Coupe:  You can probably figure this one out on your own but these will most likely be Coupe versions of BMW’s new Gran Turimso lineup.

Compactive and Compactive Tourer: These vehicles will most likely be BMW’s upcoming front-wheel-drive models.

i: These will be BMW’s Project i vehicles.

e: The ‘e’ badging will be found on BMW’s pure electric-vehicles like the Mini E and the BMW ActiveE Concept.

  • Google Street View Criticized For Showing ‘Secret’ SAS Base… That Has A Sign Viewable From The Street

Vic writes in to let us know of yet another complaint against Google’s Street View offering, this time in the UK, where apparently MPs and military bosses are upset that images are available on Street View of a “secret” SAS base. They’re concerned that the images even show the sign saying “British SAS.” But, of course, the only way Google got these images was by driving along public roads — meaning that anyone could have driven along those roads and seen the same damn signs and buildings. It’s not like this was actually a secret base at all — and if it was, the UK military should have done a much better job of hiding it. If Google can “accidentally” discover it this way, you have to assume that anyone who actually cares would have figured it out long ago. The complaint is that those planning an attack can view the building via Street View… but, of course, they could also just drive by and take their own images. Oh, and of course, by complaining so loudly about this, it’s only attracted that much more attention to the fact that the base exists and is viewable on Google Street View.

  • Want the first Corvette Z06 Carbon? Bring your checkbook to Palm Beach

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Carbon – Click above for high-res image gallery

In the last few years it’s become a tradition for automakers to auction off the first production model of a collector car at Barrett-Jackson. That’s set to continue next month when Chevrolet will offer the very first Corvette Z06 Carbon at the Palm Beach Auction from April 1-3. The winner of the auction will not only get the very first Z06 Carbon, but will also be given the opportunity to take a tour of the GM Performance Build Center where the LS7 and LS9 engines are constructed by hand.

Designed as a tribute to the Corvette’s first race at Le Mans 50 years ago, the Z06 Carbon features some parts from the range-topping ZR1 including the Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, Magnetic Ride Control suspension and a ZR1-style spoiler. The hood, side sills and front spoiler are also made from lightweight carbon fiber.

If past GM auctions at Barrett-Jackson are anything to go by, the first Z06 Carbon should command a significant amount of cash. The first Corvette ZR1 went for a cool million dollars and the first Camaro had a top bid of $350,000. Most recently a limited edition Corvette Z06 raised $200,000 to benefit Haiti at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction in January. Follow the jump for the official press release from GM.

  • Toyota creates North American quality task force

Toyota announced today that it has formed a new North American Quality Task Force to be led by senior automobile manufacturing executive Steve St. Angelo, who is Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America.

St. Angelo will guide the implementation of regional improvements in concert with the Special Committee for Global Quality led by Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda.

“Mr. St. Angelo was appointed to the new role of Chief Quality Officer for North America,” Toyota said in a statement. “He will serve with counterparts from the other regions on Mr. Toyoda’s committee, which meets for the first time on March 30 in Japan.”

“We are making fundamental changes in the way our company operates in order to ensure that Toyota sets an even higher standard for vehicle safety and reliability, responsiveness to customers, and transparency with regulators,” Mr. St. Angelo said. “The new organization will open the lines of communication globally and enable us to respond faster here in North America to any concerns about our vehicles. In keeping with Akio Toyoda’s mandate, North America will have greater autonomy and play a critical role in decision making on recalls and other safety issues.”

Each regional quality task force is specifically charged with executing a six-point action plan outlined by Mr. Toyoda on February 5. It includes improved quality assurance; enhanced customer research; strengthened quality management training; incorporation of best practices through outside professionals; closer cooperation with regulatory authorities; and improved regional autonomy.

  • Proof That Everyone Is Obsessed With Protectionism Again

We’re not 100% convinced that a new trade war is coming. There’s never a time when economists don’t see a trade war coming right around the corner and most of the time it doesn’t live up to the hype.

But the talk is hot again.

Here’s a nice little chart from Morgan Stanley analyst Emma Watson on media mentions of protectionism and trade wars, and as you can see the NYT, FT, WSJ, and Economist are all back at it.

To some extent we can probably blame Krugman for this, since he’s on the China revaluation kick, though the Murdoch-owned WSJ remains king.

  • This Guy Is The Reason Paulson And Soros Invested In NovaGold (SPDR)

    tom-kaplan

If we needed a reason why both Paulson and Soros like NovaGold, now we have one: Tom Kaplan, a billionaire investor who bought NovaGold before either of them.

Here’s one reason to think Soros pays attention to Kaplan’s investment in NovaGold, a relatively obscure company: Soros has done business with Kaplan before. Ten million of seed money from Soros helped Kaplan when he founded Apex Silver Mines in 1995.

NovaGold is an exploration based firm that scouts land for mining and then partners with huge firms like Barrick to actually mine the ground. Both Paulson and Soros, two huge hedge fund managers, bought into NovaGold in the first quarter of this year.

Their investments in NovaGold were big news. A number of investors follow Paulson and Soros and soon wanted to invest in NovaGold.

Nathan Vardi, a writer for Forbes, has discovered that Tom Kaplan was actually the first billionaire investor to take a large stake in NovaGold. Vardi says Soros’s and Paulson’s (and everyone else’s) moves followed Kaplan’s lead. Kaplan is a billionaire investor and an “ideas” man whose moves might be watched by other money managers.

Right now Kaplan is very bullish on gold.  He bought (through his company, Electrum Strategic Resources) a 28% stake in NovaGold for $70 million in January 2009. He has warrants to buy more. Tigris Financial Group, Kaplan’s family office, manages close to $2 billion in gold assets.

Soros and Paulson are right there with Kaplan on the gold train. Soros was the 4th largest shareholder in SPDR last quarter. His fund is 7.5% invested in SPDR. Gold is Paulson‘s biggest bet right now. 17.07% of Paulson & Co is in SPDR Gold Trust. Paulson also launched a fund dedicated solely to gold.

So Paulson and Soros were bullish on gold to begin with, but if it weren’t for Tom Kaplan, NovaGold might never have been on their radar.

  • Fools, Bigots And Liars Hide Under The Dems’ ‘Big Blanket’.

03.25.10 12:45 AM posted by Skip MacLure

While the nation seethes and counts the days until November, the Marxi-Socialists of the Democratic party and the statists of their stooley press are attempting the badly used-up tactic of manufacturing incidents calculated to bring shadows down on the Republicans, and most particularly the Conservative Patriot movement, or ‘Tea Party’ movement, as they so disparagingly term us.

Starting with the ’supposed’ incident of two black Representatives being spat upon and called racial epitaphs, it’s really difficult to understand how in this day, with almost every cell phone video-capable and with some thousands of people around, no one obtained a single picture of anything that allegedly transpired. It wouldn’t be the first time the left has tried to gin up sympathy by using the race card to play the race card.

Guess what guys? That one ain’t playing so well again either. Does anyone out there remember Tawana Brawley and that epitome of truth and probity Al (Race Bait) Sharpton?

    Brawley and Sharpton

It’s not just that such tactics are not beneath the Congressional Democrats and their Marxist radical allies, they are part and parcel of the playbook that statists use on a daily basis. We hear stories of threats made against Representatives’ lives and bricks thrown through windows. So many times in the past we’ve heard claims like this exploded in the light of truth, the instigators found to be either Democrat operatives or fringe nut-cakes from their own side, of which they have many. Like the one who trashed a Democrat campaign office during the last election. read more »

03.25.10 11:39 AM posted by Veronica Estrada

I don’t have to tell you how ineffective Conservative leadership has been on the Hill.

If you think I’m being too harsh, my answer to you is very simple:

Democrats passed universal healthcare to rival Cuba’s.

    </p>

Democratic leadership didn’t need the live-broadcast of propaganda by any Cuba-loving filmmaker to tout the merits of Cuban healthcare to get this socialism-legislation passed.

All they needed was the Organizer who would campaign for weeks on end before the vote. Now he’s going back to sell subtly socialized healthcare to the angry American public that doesn’t want it.

    Obama is also going to try to convince us to keep the party that brought us this monstrosity in power. read more &raquo;

With a space-saving design incorporating advanced electronics, the new Model FS10A Flow Switch/Monitor from Fluid Components International (FCI) represents the next-generation, lowest-cost solution for continuously verifying flows within liquid or gas process analyzer sampling systems.

The breakthrough FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch is a small, lightweight instrument featuring superior low flow sensitivity, a choice of electronic outputs and a no-moving parts design that ensures maximum reliability. Analyzer end-users or system integrators will find the FS10A’s advanced electronics and thermal dispersion flow sensing technology provide a superior overall solution to sampling system flow assurance. It is ideally suited for continuous monitoring of analyzer sample flows to provide the highest integrity process analysis without interruption.

The FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch’s precision flow sensor element has no moving parts to foul, clog or maintain, ensuring continuous reliability and requiring virtually no maintenance. Unlike capillary bypass flow meters and controllers, the FS10A has no cavities, orifices or dead-legs that can trap fluids and lead to contaminated samples, which preserves sample integrity and provides faster system sampling times. The instrument’s wetted parts are corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel with Hastelloy-C sensor tips.

The FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch is designed for use with nearly all types of process and emissions sampling systems, including gas chromatographs (GCs), mass spectrometers, optical spectrometers, photometers and others. The FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch fits in a standard ¼ inch tube tee or SP76 adapter (ANSI/ISA Standard 76.00.02-2002, Modular Component Interfaces for Surface-Mount Fluid Distribution Components). SP76 is a key element of the NeSSITM platform (New Sampling/Sensor Initiative) that has been evolving since 1999.

The FS10A conforms to NeSSI Generation I and is prepped for Generation II and III compliance. It requires only a single 1.5-x-1.5-inch SP76 base.

The FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch operates over a wide flow range, depending on the configuration selected. The flow range in air is from 0.1 SCFH to 20 SCFH (50 cc/min to 10,000 cc/min), and the flow range in water is 0.001 GPM to 0.03 GPM (4 cc/min to 100 cc/min). It accommodates wide turndowns with a ratio up to 100:1.

The FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch’s electronics are packaged in a rugged, fully-sealed aluminum housing. The electronics can be integral mounted with the sensor element in a uni-body configuration or remotely mounted for easy front panel display viewing. The FS10 features a top-mounted, ten (10) LED array and two pressure-sensitive button touch controls. The LED display provides users visibility of flow rate trend, alarm status and power on/off. The flow switch’s set-up and setpoint values can be changed via the two push-buttons or via its standard RS232C serial interface.

A choice of electronic outputs is available with the FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch. The FS10A switch output can be either an open collector (transistor) or a 1A relay settable for NO or NC operation. The switch settings are user programmable for trip control of hysteresis and time delay. An optional 4-20mA output is available for trending, which is settable to represent flow rate in mass flow or standard volume units.

Agency approvals for the FS10A Analyzer Flow Switch include FM and FMc: Nonincendive, Class I, Division 2 Groups A, B, C, D; Class II, Division 2 Groups E, F, G; Class III TA@Ta=71ºC Type 4X. It has also been submitted for ATEX and IEC with those approvals pending.

2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS with HiPer strut front suspension – Click above for high-res image gallery

Now that Buick has a refreshed reason to exist in a post-bankruptcy General Motors, the brand isn’t sitting still with its products. Take, for example, the redesigned Buick LaCrosse, which only went on sale about nine months ago. GM is already updating the sedan’s hardware. It’s not that there was anything terribly wrong with the 2009 LaCrosse we first drove last spring, but GM was already working on improvements that are ready to roll out on the 2010 model year.

The first improvement to hit dealers is a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder that was announced last year. We’ve driven that one and will have our first impressions for you next week. However, enthusiast-minded drivers will probably be more interested in Buick’s new HiPer strut front suspension. This new adaptation of the long-serving MacPherson strut is designed to almost completely eliminate torque steer while at the same time provide a more compliant ride. Make the jump to learn how it works as we take the 2010 Buick LaCrosse CXS with the new HiPer strut front suspension for spin.

  • REWORK hits NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Sunday Times (UK) bestseller lists

It’s been quite a ride since REWORK launched on March 9. We’re proud to say the book has reached #4 in the “Hardcover Advice, How-To, Miscellaneous” category at the NY Times bestseller list in its second week:

    4

Maybe we’ll make an attack ad against Alicia Silverstone next (“She really is CLUELESS!”).

It also debuted at #2 on the list of Best-Selling Hardcover Business Books at the Wall Street Journal:

    wsj

It’s also #4 at USA Today’s Money Best Sellers list. According to our UK publisher, it will be #1 on the UK Sunday Times business bestseller list this weekend. International copies are out in many parts of the rest of the world too.

    Reviews
Best of all, people are loving the book. The average customer review at Amazon is 4.3 out of 5 stars (after 47 customer reviews). Here’s a sampling of reviews REWORK has received so far:

Alexis Rodich, Washington Post: “I want to buy a copy for everyone I know”

Brad Feld, MIT Technology Review: “Brilliant”

Jack Covert, founder of 800-CEO-READ: “I cannot over-emphasize its value”

Kevin Partner, PC Pro: “By far the most useful and provocative business book I’ve read in recent years”

Matt Dunn: “Possibly the most important business book you’ll ever read”

Noah Fleming: “Provides you with more real-world applicable business knowledge than an MBA

    Emails
The emails pouring in from readers have also been really kind. Thanks to everyone who’s taken the time to write. Here’s a note from Winn Elliott:

I’m not gonna lie… I didn’t see this coming. I just got my copy of Rework today and have now read it cover to cover. Twice.

    Best. Book. I’ve. Ever. Read.

Thank you guys for inspring me to be a better leader. This is exactly what I needed to hear… Confirming both what I’ve done right—and wrong.

Others have had similar kind words and we really appreciate it.

    The attack ad
Our ad that “Swift Boated” Karl Rove made its way around the web too. Nearly 40,000 views at YouTube and mentions at Newsweek, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post, Valleywag, and lots of other places. And, according to one media source we spoke with, Rove has seen the ad and thinks it is “hysterical.”

    Interviews
Jason and David recently appeared on ABC News to discuss REWORK with host Tory Johnson.

And here’s an interview with Leo Laporte where David looks like Robocop:

More press is on the way too. One thing we’re still hopeful for: an interview with Charlie Rose. Anyone out there who can help make it happen? Seems like it would be a great fit.

Also, if you find your local Barnes & Noble or Borders store is out of REWORK, please let us know.

  • Volvo V70 axed in favor of front-drive XC70, S80 V8 going away?

2010 Volvo V70 – Click above to view internal Product Update Bulletin

It’s a refrain that two-box enthusiasts have to be tired of hearing, but proper station wagons remain a really hard sell in America. The latest casualty appears to be segment-stalwart Volvo, which, according to a leaked dealer document from an AB tipster (click here to view), is apparently giving up on its V70 estate in the U.S. As noted in a March 25, 2010 internal Product Update Bulletin, the move comes at least in part because of the success of the XC90 and XC60 “chipping away” at the V70’s volume. In its stead, the Swedish automaker plans to add a front-drive version of its XC70, which is itself basically just a lifted version of the V70 anyhow. As it stands, production of Yankee-spec V70s is slated to end on May 14.

In another consolidation move, Volvo’s S80 will no longer be available with a V8 engine for 2011. Changes to the six-cylinder T6 model will boost power to 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque – the outgoing eight-cylinder offers identical torque and a bit more horsepower (311), but with inferior fuel economy and added weight. Volvo expects the revamped six-cylinder will offer up to a nine-percent improvement in fuel consumption over its predecessor.

Finally, for 2011, Volvo is moving its smaller S40 and V50 models to a single-engine lineup, dumping the entry-level 2.4i (168 hp/170 lb. ft.) in favor of the turbocharged T5, which offers nearly identical fuel economy with significantly more power (227 hp/236 lb. ft.). While that’s likely no big loss for would-be buyers (assuming pricing doesn’t get out of hand), the range is also going front-drive and automatic-only, with T5 all-wheel drive and 2.4i models also going out of production on May 14.
