  • Hulu Continues To Shoot Self In Foot: Blocks More Browsers

Hulu, at the behest of its corporate masters, continues to shoot itself in the foot and make it an increasingly less useful platform. Last year, Hulu got a lot of attention for blocking Boxee, a specialized browser to show internet video on a computer-connected television. Hulu was apologetic about it, but admitted that it was pressured to do this by its owners (though, NBC boss Jeff Zucker appears to have lied to Congress about NBC’s role in this). However, it didn’t stop there. Hulu, it seems, is hellbent on trying to block any browser it doesn’t like from showing its content. It’s blocked the PS3’s browser and mobile browsers as well.

The latest is that it wasted almost no time before blocking the new Kylo browser from Hillcrest labs that, like Boxee, was designed to better format the content for television.

This is typical short-sighted thinking from the likes of NBC bosses who are bizarrely afraid that people might watch authorized television shows on their television. Of course, the real fear is that if people start doing this, the cable and satellite companies might start losing business, meaning that they’ll pay a lot less to NBC to carry their shows. This is such typical thinking from NBC execs, who seem to go out of their way to pretend that they can hold people back from doing what they want, because it doesn’t agree with NBC’s increasingly obsolete business model. So instead of letting people watch authorized content, with very high paying advertising, they’re instead driving people to get the content through unauthorized means. It’s bizarre that anyone could think this is a smart idea — but, then again, we’re talking about NBC management here. They think that downloading movies is hurting the American corn farmer… so logic has never really been a strong suit.

  • Mercedes Gullwings old and new return to Mexico for Carrera Panamericana revival

Mercedes Gullwings on the trail of the Carrera Panamericana – Click above for high-res image gallery

Once upon a time, long-distance road rallies were all the rage in motorsports. Sportscars raced down open roads across countries from sea to shining sea in spectacular form. But while two of the most famous took place in Italy – the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio – another took place right here in North America.

The Carrera Panamericana was held in the early 1950s in Mexico and was widely regarded as one of the most dangerous races in the world. In 1952, Karl Kling and Hans Klenk took the checkered flag in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing”, but only after a collision with a vulture – yes, a vulture – heavily damaged the car and Herr Klenk’s head in the process (hence the grille bars on the windscreen). To further cement the feat, a second Gullwing finished second, giving Mercedes a one-two finish.

The race has long since been canceled, but like the Mille Miglia was revived recently as a classics rally, and the vulture-smashing original is to retrace its routes together with the modern Gullwing, the SLS AMG. Our man Paukert is doing just that as you read this and it should be a brilliant trip down memory lane. The initial crop of photos from the event are beginning to trickle in. See for yourself in the gallery below and scope out the details in the release below the fold.

  • Treasury pay czar cuts auto exec pay for 2010

Treasury Department pay czar cut cash compensation for the top 25 executives at five firms by one-third for 2010. Kenneth Feinberg announced the compensation packages for the top 25 executives at General Motors, Chrysler Group, Chrysler Financial, GMAC and AIG. Overall compensation for the executives is down 15 percent over 2009 levels.

Feinberg oversees executives compensation at five firms that received federal loans under the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program.

GM sought to pay 16 of its top 25 executives more than $500,000, but Fienberg approved $500,000 or more for only eight. Average cash salaries at GM were cut by 7.5 percent for the top 25 GM executives. Fienberg approved $9 million in compensation for GM Chairman and CEO Edward Whitacre Jr.

Chrysler’s top 25 executives, whose pay was cut 18 percent last year, aren’t seeing any reduction in salaries. Just one employee is getting an overall compensation of more than $1 million and none of Chrysler’s execs earn more than $500,000. Just one executive at Chrysler is getting $500,000 in cash. Fienberg also told Chrysler that it can go ahead and award long-term restricted stock grants to employees for 2009.

Ford, which didn’t take any federal loans and is not having its executive pay capped, announced this week that CEO Alan Mullaly’s total compensation for 2009 totaled $17.9 million.

  • MGMT Album Leaks… Band Wants To Give Official Version For Free, But Denied

It’s pretty common these days for musical releases from big name bands to leak early, followed by the band pushing up the release date. In the latest such case (sent in by reader Matthew), the band MGMT had its latest album leaked early, and then responded by putting up a free streaming version of the entire album. They’re not the first band to do this, but what’s interesting is the note on the band’s website, where they claim they wanted to actually make the whole thing downloadable, but were told that wasn’t allowed:

Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us

Well, actually, it makes sense to lots of us, but we’re not running Sony Music. It’s great that the band was able to put out a streaming version, and doesn’t seem to mind that the album itself leaked, but not putting up an official downloadable version means that people will still be getting the unofficial version, and MGMT and Sony miss out on an opportunity to actually connect with the fans (such as by asking for an email address or giving people additional reasons to buy as they download).

  • Chevrolet Camaro to respond to Ford Mustang V6 with more power

It seems like we’re going to keep seeing a never-ending horsepower, fuel-economy war between the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang – and that might not be a very bad thing for us enthusiasts and customers.

Ford is very proud of its 2011 Ford Mustang V6, which is powered by a 305-hp 3.7L V6, one more horsepower better than the base 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. The 2011 Mustang V6 also tops the Camaro in highway fuel-economy by 1 mpg for a total of 30 mpg when mated to a 6-speed automatic.

So how will Chevrolet respond? Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette marketing manager John Fitzpatrick told Automobile Magazine that the 2011 Mustang’s horsepower lead may be short-lived.

Click here to get prices on the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.

Fitzpatrick also said that “you might see it sooner than that. “It’s really great to see Ford stepping up their game,” Fitzpatrick said, saying that he believes Ford used the Camaro as a benchmark.

In the mean time, the 426-hp 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS still trumps the 412-hp 2011 Ford Mustang GT.

  • Mercedes-Benz B-Class AMG model will look more like a F800 Style

Earlier this morning, we told you that Mercedes-Benz is planning on doing a high-performance AMG version of the new redesigned B-Class. Now that may have some you thinking that the model will be a B-Class wagon looking high-performance model – well, that’s not entirely the case.

While it’s true that Mercedes-Benz AMG division will be doing a high-performance compact car based on the next-generation B-Class, the model will look something more like the F800 Style Concept shown at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show last month.

The model will be slotted below the next-generation C 63 AMG and will be a sedan with design influences from the next CLS. It will have a coupe-like profile with an aggressive stance and prominent crease lines.

Click here to get prices on the 2010 Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG.

Instead of a turbo 4-cylinder engine (as reported earlier this morning), the model will use a supercharged 3.2L V6 engine making somewhere close to 400-hp.

Yup, we’re much more excited now than we were this morning.

  • Spanish Gov’t Moves Forward On New Law To Make File Sharing And Links Sites Illegal

A bunch of free culture sites got pretty excited recently when a Spanish court ruled that file sharing sites, as well as links sites, weren’t illegal. Of course, we noted this was hardly a new thing. Spanish courts had already made similar rulings in the past. In fact, the timing of this ruling seemed particularly bad, since we’d noted a few months ago that there were proposals being pushed to change copyright law in Spain. So it should come as little surprise that just days after that last ruling, the gov’t has started moving forward with getting the new law approved, and many expect it will be in place within a few months.

The new law sounds particularly bad as well. It would set up a governmental bureaucracy that could simply denounce any site as illegal, if it feels that it offers links to infringing content. Once “denounced,” the Spanish high court would get a grand total of four days to determine if the site should be shut down — and the only reason why it would be allowed to not shut the site down would be if there were clear concerns about freedom of expression. Basically, if the gov’t feels a site has too many “unauthorized” links, it gets shut down with minimal review. So much for a more balanced approach to copyright law.

  • Jason Castriota launching his own design firm

Bertone Mantide – Click above for high-res image gallery

Where in the world is Jason Castriota? One minute he’s penning for Pininfarina. The next, he’s at Stile Bertone. Now he’s rumored to have signed on to create a new line of exotics for Shelby SuperCars. But not before the talented young designer sets up his own shop.

According to an interview granted by Castriota to Car Design News, he’s already in the process of establishing his own design consultancy. Though not yet officially launched, the firm is based in both New York and Turin, and is already garnering clients. Five designers working in his new studio are working on project ranging from furniture to sneakers to water bottles.

For his part Castriota hasn’t disclosed details on any automotive projects currently under way, including the purported SSC contract. But for someone with a portfolio that includes the Maserati Birdcage, Rolls-Royce Hyperion and Bertone Mantide, we wouldn’t expect him to stay away from his apparent true passion for long, so stay tuned.

  • HTC Sense 2.5 Facebook Tab, Now in Service

XDA, who have been doing a lot of developing these days,  seems to have managed to get a Facebook tab for Sense 2.5. XDA member Meltwater has put together a package that includes a pretty basic, but great Facebook tab, and all the required stuff to go with it. comments, pokes, likes and notifications are not included in the package, but this is only the first release, I am sure more is to come. image

The guy seems to be working hard, and I am sure soon all ROMs will include this new development. I am going to try this out now, and see what comes of it. Facebook is the 2nd biggest site in the world, and the biggest social network, so I am sure almost everyone here can us this.

  • The First Rule Of NCAA March Madness Is You Can’t Mention NCAA March Madness

What is it with sports leagues that think they have the right to deny anyone from making factual statements? We’ve seen it (repeatedly) with the Olympics and we’ve seen it with the World Cup… and now we’re seeing it with the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, better known as March Madness. This week, of course, some of the games will be played in Syracuse (including, I feel the urgent need to mention, the surprise of the tournament, my alma mater Cornell), and jsl4980 was the first of a few of you to send in the news that local businesses are being told they cannot mention the fact that the tournament is being held there. No local businesses are allowed to “welcome” fans or players for the event. They can’t mention the NCAA event is happening, or that we’re at the “Sweet Sixteen” level.

Of course, that’s all according to the NCAA, which is basically lying. They’re abusing the rights that trademark law gives them to try to restrict free speech on factual information, in a misguided effort to squeeze more money out of sponsors, by pretending that only sponsors can mention the event. But trademark law does not give you blanket control over the trademarked terms — and presenting factual information, or welcoming people to a city by mentioning an event that is absolutely happening there should not be considered trademark infringement in the slightest.

Apparently, in the past the NCAA wasn’t as abusive of trademarks, but it’s learned a thing or two by watching how other sporting events abuse trademark law, and now everyone seems to be bending over backwards assuming that just because the NCAA forbids something that they have the legal right to do so.

• Inhofe: Climategate Shows There’s No Global Warming Consensus, USAtoday

    Article Tags: James Inhofe

Call it the global warming crackup, an unfolding process of contradictory claims about glaciers, weather, and scientists asserting a consensus when none exists. Global warming alarmists can’t make up their minds because the entire basis for their energy rationing project has collapsed into a mess of errors, exaggerations, and deceit. Let me explain.

The Obama administration said the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the “gold standard” for climate science, yet now the Environmental Protection Agency administrator won’t defend it. The IPCC and Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize. Now the IPCC has retracted several false claims concerning, among other things, rain forests shrinking, crops dying, and sea levels rising. We’ve been told weather is not to be confused with climate, except when you have heat waves or blizzards. We’ve been told cap-and-trade would create thousands of green jobs, yet the Congressional Budget Office, Department of Energy, National Black Chamber of Commerce, and others say it would mean a net loss of jobs.

We are told that increasing levels of CO2 will increase temperature, yet the key scientist in the climategate scandal says there’s been “no statistically significant warming” in the past 15 years—all while CO2 levels have increased. We’ve been told that there is an “indisputable consensus” that human-caused global warming is happening and pushing the planet to certain disaster. Yet that same scientist—Phil Jones, former director of Britain’s Climatic Research Unit, the foremost such center—now says that the vast majority of climate scientists don’t agree on what the data are telling us.
