  • New Ergo spray equipment from Nilfisk-ALTO

Nilfisk-ALTO has always been the foremost innovator in terms of handling and user friendliness. First supplier to make an upright
standing professional pressure washer, supplier of the quick coupling accessory concept and winner of the IF Design award for
industrial ergonomic design, finding ways to reduce customer tiredness and stress is second nature to us.

Several years ago, Nilfisk-ALTO innovated by launching the Ergo 3000 spray gun, living up to this strategy of focusing on user
    friendliness and ergonomics.

In past years, focus has grown on more basic cleaning solutions – but still with the reduction of tiredness and ease of use
being of great importance. As time goes on, health and safety issues become more and more important.

Nilfisk-ALTO once again takes a step forward in launching the new Ergo 2000, positionning the spray gun firmly as the most
ergonomic and user friendly solution on the market.

The new design fits comfortably in the hand. There is plenty of space inside the trigger guard for big hands or for people wearing
gloves. The trigger itself is activated by the strongest fingers. In addition to these basic features, Nilfisk-ALTO has added a totally
new VarioPress regulator. This small trigger enables the adjustment of the pressure/flow with one finger – and is easily within reach of the main trigger itself.

The Ergo 2000 gun is also very easy to service, replacement of wear parts being done simply and quickly on the field.

Ergo 2000 is also equipped with a SoftGrip rubber treatment around the trigger guard to reduce vibrations and ensure
    additional user comfort.

And the Ergo 2000 includes the standard quick bayonet coupling system for an easy change over of accessories – reducing accessory change over time by more than 50%.

But by far the greatest achievement on the new spray gun is the significant reduction in activation and holding forces. Activation
force is the power required to pull the trigger each time you wish to work. Holding force is the power required to keep the trigger
open and is critical in long term use. The higher the forces, the more tired the user will become – and the more risk there is of
strain and injury due to repeated or long term use.

This development clearly places the Ergo 2000 as one of the most user friendly spray gun on the market.

  • Market launch: MCP 200 polarimeter

The newest member of Anton Paar’s polarimeter family provides precision at an economic price – the success story continues!

As with Anton Paar’s other polarimeters, the new MCP 200 stands out for its easy and intuitive menu navigation. It is a pleasure to operate the MCP 200 via the color touchscreen. It also fulfils all the requirements of international standards and guidelines (pharmacopoeia, OIML, ASTM and 21 CFR Part 11). On the subject of precision, MCP 200 makes the grade with an accuracy of ± 0.005 ° Optical Rotation, without limits over the entire measuring range.

To ensure the highest ease-of-use and error-free operation, the MCP 200 polarimeter is equipped with a system which automatically identifies the quartz control plate or sample cell. This ToolmasterTM option consists of a memory chip integrated into the sample cell which automatically transfers all relevant data to the polarimeter. The ToolmasterTM technology prevents data errors during measurements and calibrations, and meets the very highest demands for documentation and traceability, required for example by 21 CFR Part 11.

The modular concept of the MCP polarimeter series makes MCP 200 extremely flexible. For routine determination of Optical Rotation, MCP 200 is equipped with a large selection of sample cells for every possible application. Optional extras include Peltier thermostatting of the sample cells and calibration standards, as well as an additional 8 wavelengths. Each of these options can be integrated later on-site, allowing the MCP polarimeters to grow to fit the situation at hand.

The MCP series has its roots in the company „Dr. Kernchen“, which was established in 1970 by Dr. Wolfgang Kernchen to develop and sell top-class polarimeters and refractometers. After Anton Paar GmbH acquired the company, Dr. Wolfgang Kernchen retired: a long-term solution for safeguarding the company in Seelze had been found.

  • Europont for the maintenance of Brussels tramways.

CFE, a subsidiary of the Vinci group, has chosen a Europont bridge crane equipped with a Verlinde Eurobloc VT hoist for rehabilitating the Brussels tram museum and the adjacent operations depot. It is radio-controlled, has a 1.6-ton capacity, and will be used for handling tramway roof elements during maintenance operations. All movements, raising, lowering, longitudinal or transverse, are with continuous speed variation.

CFE is a construction and public works group quoted on Euronext Brussels, of which the Vinci Group holds 47% of the capital. It is organized around several activity sectors: construction and renovation of civil engineering and building infrastructures; dredging and environmental de services; marine engineering services; multi-technical services.

Since September 2007, CFE Brabant has undertaken the renovation of the tramway depot of the STIB (Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles) in Woluwé-St.-Pierre. This classified historical site hosts the Brussels Urban Transport Museum, or “Tram Museum,” next to the active depot. The roofing containing asbestos is replaced and the roof is also insulated over the museum, after repair and reinforcement of the authentic wooden roof structure. The facades are restored and the operations building and museum with the “1941” annex are renovated, preserving their historic character. CFE Brabant is also modernizing the depot, which is remaining active during the works. A few new maintenance pits have been created and a new social building and spare parts store are planned in the depot. The renovation works will be finished in early 2009.

It was in the STIB depot that Verlinde’s Europont bridge crane was installed. “The Verlinde equipment proposed by Europa Levage, distributor and integrator for Belgium, offer very good reliability as well as the best cost effectiveness on the market,” says Mr. Rychter, Special Techniques Engineer at CFE. With a hoisting capacity of 1.6 tons, it will service track 21 in the middle of the American pit equipped with catwalks running along both sides of the track. The bridge will be used for handling elements on the tramway roof (catenaries, auxiliary converters, etc.) in the train servicing and maintenance programs.

  • AP SERIES

MP Series automatic polishers are designed for time saving purposes, when it is requested the preparation of a certain number of metallographic samples simultaneously or, where the large number of samples justifies the choice of an automatic machine.

The COMBO version of the AP Series polishers offers the opportunity to use, alternatively, the individual pressure (embedded samples are put in a sample holder and individually pressed) or the central pressure (directly on the sample holder, for irregularly shaped and sized samples which cannot be embedded, or even embedded samples).

The AP Series range also offers the choice between fixed and variable speed, depending on the sample type, and single or double wheel, when it is preferable to separate the grinding from the polishing process.

The crew at Fast Lane Daily have apparently scored the first official shot of the Ferrari 599 GTO ahead of its launch later this year, and while we’re still suitably skeptical about the pic, we’ve been assured by the show’s producers that this is the real deal.

So what’s Ferrari have in store? If previous reports are to be believed, the GTO will be a road-focused version of the 599XX, packing a 700+ horsepower Enzo-derived 6.0-liter V12 capable of revving to 9,000 rpm. Shifts will be delivered in a mind-boggling 60 milliseconds, resulting in a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds as it climbs to a claimed 217 mph top speed. Only 500 units will be produced – and likely made available to select Ferrari owners – each carrying a price tag somewhere north of $400,000. Make the jump for Derek D’s insufferable commentary and photoshopped shenanigans, and expect the 599 GTO to be revealed in full in the coming months.

  • Opera Submits Browser App…But Who Cares?

I don’t use any browser on my iPhone other than Mobile Safari. And, unless you have a jailbroken iPhone, neither do you.

That’s because Apple’s webkit-powered Mobile Safari provides the browser engine for all the iPhone’s various windows onto the Interweb. So, whether you’re viewing a webpage from inside Tweetie 2, Instapaper or any one of the multitude of apps that allow for in-app web browsing, you’re using Mobile Safari.

Back in early February at the Mobile World Congress, Opera showed off an iPhone version of their mobile browser, Opera Mini, to a select group of reporters and tech-pundits. That left me a little confused; how could they produce a real browser, built from the ground-up, using its own in-house rendering engine, without breaking the rules?

You see, Apple has a strict rule that native applications are not permitted to reproduce the functionality offered by the iPhone out-of-the-box. That’s why you don’t see a third-party Camera app that doesn’t also offer some kind of additional “unique” functionality you wouldn’t get by simply using Apple’s own Camera software. The same goes for email applications, phone applications, iPod-like applications… you get the idea. Anything you can think of that seems similar to an Apple-made app likely is considered just different enough to be approved.

    Opera’s Partner Manager Phillip Grønvold told Wired;

There are two reasons why we are confident that Opera Mini will met [sic] the requirements of the App Store…

One, our compression technology imposes limitations on what the browser can do — Opera doesn’t render rich, content-heavy documents like Safari does.

Two, Opera Mini does not actually render HTML on the device, it uses a custom binary representation of the website. We believe these technical differences make Opera Mini sufficiently different to Safari to be made available on the App Store.

So, let’s get this straight; the Opera Mini web browser doesn’t actually render HTML? Web pages are converted from HTML into some other markup (compatible only with Opera Mini) and then the ‘browser’ delivers a sub-par browsing experience? Presumably that’s what Grønvold means when he says Opera Mini ‘…doesn’t render rich, content-heavy documents’. It renders something less than you’d get normally. But, according to Wired’s Michael Conroy, it is fast. So, I guess that’s something. But… it’s something less than you’d normally get. It’s just a thought, but, wasn’t that the problem with phones before the iPhone? They delivered less than the best? I’m just saying…

With this in mind, the question shouldn’t really be “will Apple approve it” but rather, should we care about it in the first place?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never considered Mobile Safari unacceptably slow. My Internet connection has sometimes been slow, but that’s not the fault of Mobile Safari — which dutifully renders what it can, when it can. And you know, even when my throughput is a bit meager, I’d rather wait the additional seconds for the full-quality I’ve come to expect from Mobile Safari. Otherwise, what’s the point in owning an iPhone, if I’m only going to use apps that deliver pre-iPhone results?

And, while I’m on the subject of connectivity; in areas where my coverage is very limited and my iPhone can barely hold on to a simple GPRS signal, I simply don’t bother surfing the web. It’s an exercise in frustration. A hyper-optimised, super-fast alternative browser might seem like an attractive solution to someone who often finds themselves with limited throughput, but really, wouldn’t most people just wait until they get a stronger signal? Or, even better, access to a Wi-Fi network?

I know I haven’t tried it yet, I’m going by what Grønvold showed-off at the MWC —  but I just don’t see that it offers much in the way of utility and quality. Fart apps and Bikini apps also don’t offer much in the way of utility and quality… but look at what’s happening to them…

So, will Apple approve Opera Mini? I doubt it. It doesn’t matter that it renders web pages in some special way, it’s still a browser.

    That won’t stop the wider tech press turning this into something it’s not. If it is approved, there’ll be talk of how it signifies this or indicates that and someone will claim this in some way ‘proves’ Apple and its iPhone are losing their sparkle… Walt Mosspuppet (the only technology journalist in the world) has this to say on the (unlikely) possibility of Apple approving Opera Mini;

…it would be great if their app makes it onto the store. After all, there are all sorts of big bets I win once I can show evidence that Hell’s frozen over, and Apple allowing another browser on the iPhone might just do it.

If (and when) Opera Mini doesn’t get approved, Apple will be criticized for… well, all the usual. Just fill in the blanks yourself, you know the words to this song by now. Ultimately, some kind of drama will be invented. It always is.

Do you want a different browser on the iPhone? And if you do, is Opera Mini the replacement you’ve been waiting for? Why? For goodness’ sake, why! Get sharing in the comments below.

2011 Ford Mustang V6 burnout – Click above to enlarge

Right now our man Jonny Lieberman is bombing around Southern California in both the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and Mustang V6. Both cars have received major mechanical upgrades for model year 2011 in the form of two new engines: The return of the fabled 5.0-liter V8 for the GT and a new 3.7-liter V6 for the base model.

Jonny’s not allowed to talk about his experience behind the wheel of either car until early next week, but that won’t stop us from giving you a sneak preview of the Mustang V6 and its upgraded motor. The 3.7-liter V6 has already been used in such everyday fare as the Mazda CX-9, Lincoln MKS and MKT. It’s also destined for duty in the 2011 Ford Edge. The 2011 Mustang V6, however, will give this work-a-day engine an opportunity to shine.

Producing 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, the Mustang’s version of the 3.7-liter V6 will be the most powerful available. Paired with a six-speed automatic, it will also make for the most fuel-efficient muscle car on the market with a highway rating of 31 mpg. But we’re not interested in fuel economy today. We’re interested in evidence of how much better the new V6 model will be compared to the current one, which has used the 210-horsepower “Cologne” 4.0-liter V6 since 2005. We think the image above is all the evidence we need. Stay tuned for our full First Drive reports of both models early next week.

Surprise! By a slim margin Americans are happy that the healthcare reforms passed, according to Gallup.

So if America doesn’t hate it now, do Republicans really think they’ll hate it enough to throw the Democrats out come November, especially since the goodies are front-loaded?

    Please.

  • European Court Of Justice Finds Google Not Guilty Of Trademark Infringement In Ad Sales… But Leaves Lots Of Loopholes

Various big luxury brands have been trying for years to get courts to say that Google is somehow liable for trademark infringement if it sells ads based on people doing searches on trademarked keywords. Most courts have rejected this argument — but there was one in France that accepted it and sided with LVMH (owners of brands Louis Vuitton, Moet & Hennessey, among others). That case moved up to the European Court of Justice, which had already suggested that selling ads based on trademarked keywords shouldn’t be considered infringing. I had thought, upon reading the BBC’s coverage of the final decision, that the court had strongly agreed with Google by saying that it was not guilty of trademark infringement, but it seemed odd that LVMH seemed to be claiming victory in the quote in that article, saying: “the ruling clarified the rules of online advertising.”

Looking at other coverage of the ruling, it appears the BBC’s explanation leaves out many of the important details. While it’s true that the court found that Google was not guilty, it did say that Google needs to remove ads when companies complain and that national courts can set their own rules on this topic. It’s not a complete win for either party, but it does seem to give more control to big brands to block perfectly legitimate advertising.

Click above to view the video after the jump

The 12 Hours of Sebring wasn’t the only season opener to take place this past weekend, as teams across Japan descended on Suzuka for the first race of the 2010 SuperGT season. And spectators didn’t just enjoy the inaugural outing of the new Honda HSV-010 GT500 racers, they saw two of the five Hondas crash in spectacular fashion.

A slight drizzle at the start of the race resulted in the pole-sitting No. 18 Weider Honda, piloted by Takashi Kogure, to run off track and fall towards the back of the pack. Kogure later set the fastest time (1:55.555) during his fifth lap, working his way up to eighth place in the process. But one lap later, Kogure, the No. 32 Epson HSV-010 and No. 8 ARTA HSV-010 made an impromptu sandwich going into the first corner, sending the No. 18 and No. 8 Honda’s into the wall.

You can check out the race results, along with the crash and the aftermath in the video after the jump, and get an eyeful from Suzuka in the gallery below.
