  • Police car crashes into tree on Lake Shore Drive

    CHICAGO (CBS) ― A Chicago police officer was hospitalized early Monday morning after a police squad car crashed into a tree along southbound Lake Shore Drive.

    The officer was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Chicago Tribune. The officer’s condition is unknown.

    The car apparently crashed into a tree in the median along Lake Shore Drive near Irving Park Road at about 5:15 a.m., police said.

    Police shut down all four lanes, forcing traffic off at the Irving Park exit, police said. It is not clear when lanes will reopen.

    Police and firefighters were on the scene.

  • Honda Performance Development begins shipment of Fit FF race engine

    After first announcing its plans to offer a new race engine for Formula Ford-type cars last summer, Honda Performance Development (HPD) has now begun to ship the new powerplants. HPD developed the 1.5-liter inline-four based on the production unit from the 2009 Fit. The engines will be eligible for use in the Sports Car Club of America’s Formula F category. Honda offers a kit that allows the L15A7 mill to be retrofitted into existing Formula Ford chassis like the Swift DB-1 and DB-6 as well as the Van Diemen RF99-09.

    HPD has calibrated the Fit engine to provide output comparable to the Ford Kent unit that has been the heart of Formula Ford for decades. The Honda unit is approved for SCCA competition, effective March 1, 2010.

  • One Year After The Stimulus: Less Jobs, More Taxes, Bigger Government

    One year after the launch of Obama’s stimulus package it has become painfully obvious that the stimulus’s declared goals have all failed: Unemployment has grown to 10%, the economy is worse off, and tax hikes are on the way. Only one thing was stimulated: big government – it is much bigger and more destructive now. And as always when government policies fail, the politicians behind it will claim that the idea was sound but that they simply didn’t spend enough money. And that’s why there’s now a $100 billion “jobs bill” in the works…

    Government Stimulus, One Year Later

    Last week marked the one year anniversary of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, or the stimulus bill, passing into law. While the debate over its success has been focused on whether or not it is stimulating the economy and on various questionable uses of funds, in my estimation this legislation is accomplishing exactly what it was intended to accomplish – grow the government.

    Those of us concerned about the ever increasing level of government debt gasped at the astonishing $787 billion cost estimates for this bill. True to form it has actually cost 10 percent more at $862 billion. We heard over and over that government could not sit around and do nothing while people lost their jobs and houses. The administration claimed that unemployment would not go above 8 percent if the stimulus bill passed. Now, a year later, the government estimates that unemployment is over 10 percent. The real number is closer to 20 percent. It appears that those promises were total fabrications in order to close the deal.

    In any case, the American people know that more government spending obviously equals more government. If the goal was to strengthen the private sector, Congress would have allowed businesses and individuals to keep more of their own money through meaningful tax cuts. Outrageously, the administration claims that they did “cut taxes” by reducing withholding, and that they have stimulated the private economy by increasing the amount of money in every worker’s paycheck. What they fail to mention is they did not change the total amount of taxes due. This means that all that money not withheld from paychecks will add up to a big unpleasant surprise when returns are filed this year. Many tax preparers are already seeing shocked taxpayers having to come up with big checks to the government when they normally expect a refund. Stimulus, indeed!

    The administration also claims that thousands of jobs have been created or saved by this massive spending bill, but these are just more government jobs, and counterproductive in the long run. Funding for the public sector necessarily comes at the expense of an overtaxed private economy. But, it makes sense that government would seek to expand its payroll since every new bureaucrat becomes a likely advocate for big government, when an increasing number of Americans are demanding the opposite. But the more the burden, the closer the government parasite comes to killing its host.

    Rather than learning the lessons of the past year, the administration is moving full-speed ahead to do even more economic damage. With the stimulus bill set as a precedent and victory declared, another “jobs” bill is in the works. And, in order to address the unavoidable issues of our massive deficit, the administration has named a bi-partisan commission to find ways to decrease it. Tax increases on the middle class are notoriously back “on the table”, exposing that campaign promise as another instance of merely saying what the people wanted to hear. If the obvious solution to our spending problems was seriously put forth, that is, getting back to the constitutional limitations of government, I would be shocked. More likely, this will be a tactic to increase taxes and spending in a way that passes the political buck.

  • Snow, just less of it

    CHICAGO (WBBM/CBS/STMW) – It’s a sloppy, snowy day in Chicago. You’ll need good boots and extra time today to get where you’re going.

    The good news is the WBBM AccuWeather forecast calls for snow ending early this morning with little additional accumulation.

    A winter weather advisory remains in effect until noon for Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee and Will counties, according to the National Weather Service’s Web site. A more severe winter storm warning remains in effect until noon for DeKalb, Lake and McHenry counties.

    “Current weather conditions have been working to our advantage so far,” Chicago Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Thomas Byrne said Sunday night as he briefed reporters on the city’s cleanup efforts.

    The department revved up 175 snow-fighting trucks at 7 p.m. Sunday to keep up with the impending snow storm on Chicago’s main streets and Lake Shore Drive. The city also says it is prepared for the worst, including the possibility of the previously forecasted inch-per-hour of snow.

    The heavy, wet nature of the snow may result in falling tree branches and possible power outages, and will be difficult to shovel, the weather service said.

    Air travel is also likely to be affected, although the city’s Department of Aviation reported no such delays Monday morning.

  • Plane crashes into St. Louis area home

    BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A small plane crashed into a house and adjacent hangar in a southern Illinois subdivision built for aviation enthusiasts late Sunday, and two people aboard the aircraft were missing, fire officials said.

    Signal Hill Fire Chief Greg Render told the Belleville News-Democrat that the plane was bound for St. Louis Downtown-Parks airport in Cahokia, just south of St. Louis and about 18 miles from the crash site in Belleville.

    Render wouldn’t confirm that the two people were killed, but he said the accident did not appear survivable. Nobody on the ground was injured, and no one was in the house at the time of the crash.

    A fire started after the crash and engulfed the hangar. As many as 75 firefighters were battling the blaze.

    Render said the plane crashed about 6:40 p.m. in the Aero Estates Court subdivision, where homes have hangars and private runways. The plane was traveling from Vero Beach, Fla., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

    Neighbors said they didn’t think the plane was associated with the subdivision.

    Neighbors reported seeing a fireball when the plane hit. Richard Pasqualine, 59, a resident in a nearby subdivision, said he heard what sounded like a sonic boom, then a less intense explosion afterward.

  • Greater Attention to Implementation

    By Omer Redi ADDIS ABABA, Feb 22 (IPS) Fears that the impact of the global economic meltdown would affect funding to various development areas have been rife. Already, several governments have cut their budgets for HIV and AIDS and bilateral and multilateral funding partners have done likewise.

    Tanzania was the first to announce a 25 percent budget cut early in 2009. Gender, which already receives the lowest budget allocation in most African countries, will suffer more.

    According to UNIFEM's 2008 Progress of the World's Women report, government budgets are the largest single source of financing for gender equality and women's empowerment in most countries.

    But even with overseas development assistance (ODA) accounting for five to 10 percent of national budgets, the amounts actually allocated to gender equality are negligible and often hard to quantify because of a lack of sex disaggregated data.

    Decade in defence of women's rights

    This has prompted the Women and Gender Development Directorate at the African Union (AU) to initiate the African Women’s Decade – to rescue gender issues from being dropped from member states’ budget lines altogether.

    "We looked at the financial crisis and realised that if we don’t generate attention again, we will not be able to get financial support; we are going to be lost, our budgets are going to vanish at national level and we won’t be able to implement the initiatives," said Litha Musyimi-Ogana, Director of the Directorate.

    According to Ogana, the African Decade for Women, which will span the years 2010 – 2020, is also a mechanism to accelerate the implementation and attainment of the goals stated in the various, declarations, protocols and conventions the AU has adopted. Among them, four key documents – Section 4/L of the AU Constitutive Act; the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa; the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality; and the African Union Gender Policy – as well as the African Fund for Women define the AU "gender architecture".

    The Solemn Declaration calls on member states to launch campaigns to end violence against women and on Jan. 30, the AU launched the Africa Unite Campaign to end Violence against Women. In line with Article 5 of the Declaration and the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa, the AU has given member states up to 2020 to achieve 50/50 representation of women and men  in politics and decision-making.

    But even before the gloom possible budget cuts cast over the gender agenda, Ogana said having these rights incorporated in member states’ policies has been a challenge for the AU.

    "We want to use the launch of the decade to push governments to work hard on women’s issues; those who have not ratified the various documents to ratify, those who have already ratified to put money aside for implementation," Ogana stated.

    The African Women's Decade will be launched on Oct. 15, which is World Rural Women's Day. According to Ogana, about 80 per cent of women in rural Africa are expected to benefit from works in the decade.

    Spelling equality

    Special focus will be on ten areas. These include women’s economic empowerment; increased access to agricultural land, farm inputs, credit, technology, market and water access to achieve food security; improved women’s health to reduce maternal mortality and address HIV/AIDS; as well as parity in education at all levels and in political and electoral processes.

    In anticipation of the launch, the African Fund for Women was announced on Feb. 2 at the recent AU Assembly in Addis Ababa. The Fund is meant to support the implementation of the various initiatives and protocols African countries have already ratified. Resources from the fund would go to a series of capacity building activities the AU plans to hold to help member states implement women’s rights enshrined in the various policy instruments.

    Major financing sources for the Fund will be member state contributions and donor funding, according to AU Communications and Information Division.

    Preparations for the launch of the African Women’s Decade began in March 2009. During this period, the AU Commission consulted with various women activist networks on what they want achieved during this decade.

    "The decade presents a new chance for taking women’s rights in Africa to a higher level." Roselynn Musa, Information and Documentation Officer with the African Women's Development Fund told IPS. The Accra-based nonprofit grant-making foundation supports organisations working towards women’s empowerment.

    Broken promises

    A November 2009 Africa review of the Beijing Platform for Action (Beijing +15) paints a grim picture of African countries failing to meet their commitments on gender equality. Progress on the Millennium Development Goals will also be reviewed at a high level meeting in September this year and indications so far are that Africa is doing poorly on MDG3 goal of promoting gender and empowering women.

    According to Musa, Africa has "reached a stage where implementation has to be given greater attention".

    In an email interview, Bineta Diop, Executive Director of Femmes Africa Solidarité, told IPS that in order to implement the declarations and different instruments, efforts have to be made in education, health and the struggle to end violence against grassroots women.

    "It is necessary to go from theory to practice by implementing all the instruments and commitments adopted by the AU and thus to fill the numerous gaps existing," she said.

    Despite the promises of progress the decade could bring, gender equality and women's empowerment were not among the priorities the new AU Chairperson, Malawian President Bingu Wa Mutharika, outlined for the continental body for his 12-month term. He justified the exclusion saying that women’s issues would be mainstreamed in all AU programmes.

    "We have gender issues in all aspects… in food security, in health. So it is a crosscutting issue and that is why we didn’t raise it," he told IPS. "But it is there as a top priority."

    Mutharika also said he is committed to the realization of the goals of the Decade.

    "I have confidence in the women and we will do everything to support them," he said.

  • The Problem With Melting Polar Ice

    Have you ever noticed something about those ordinary average everyday people who believe in Climate Change/Global Warming?

    Without question, they will believe the most complex Science they are told about, taking it on faith alone, without understanding the first thing about it. Their belief is that if a Scientist says it, then it must be true. Then, if a ‘Celebrity’ repeats it, then that adds further credence to it.

    However, they all seem to forget to ask the most basic of questions, that of something they themselves actually did learn in High School Science, saw proved before their very eyes, and know absolutely as proof.

    The two things that stand out the most that should be asked is about the melting point of ice, and the question of Archimedes Principle.

    This story is just one of many in most sections of the media that has recently come out. It says that Climate Scientists have now withdrawn from earlier claims of rising sea levels. For so long we have have been bombarded with Science telling us unequivocally that the Polar Ice Caps are melting and that melting ice will cause sea levels to rise. The level of that rise has sometimes differed outrageously, with some sources saying it could be up to 100 metres, and some saying it may be only 6 inches or so. The time this rise will engulf us all is also something of conjecture, with some sources saying ’soon’, and some saying by the end of this Century. However, the main thrust is that the original premise is that sea levels will inexorably rise. That’s a ‘given’, so we are told.

    However, now it seems Scientists are beginning to back pedal.

    I’m not going to talk about complex Science here. I will however mention two simple facts all of us learned at High School during those Science lessons, things that nearly all of us have forgotten.

    MELTING ICE.

    Water exists in three states, that of a solid, a liquid and a gas. Water exists in its natural state as water, because all around us, the temperature range is within that temperature where it does not freeze, or does not boil. The gaseous state is water vapour or steam. As soon as water reaches 100C (212F) it changes from a liquid to its gaseous state, that of water vapour, steam. Water freezes to its solid state, ice, at 0C, (32F) and, as long as the temperature stays below that level, then it will stay as ice. If the temperature rises, then it has to rise above that 0C before it starts to turn back into a liquid, and then the ice will gradually diminish until it has all been turned to its ‘normal’ state, that of water.

    Now I want you to visit the site at this link, which shows the temperatures in Antarctica.

    Right at the top there it shows the ‘Mean Temperatures’. (Average) In Winter the average ranges between Minus 40C and Minus 70C. Even in Summer, the average range is between Minus 15C and Minus 35C.

    So, even at the height of the Summer in Antarctica, the temperature never reaches that 0C when ice will ‘begin’ to revert slowly over time to its liquid state. For that ice to reach that temperature, then something pretty drastic would need to happen with the temperature there. We are told that there will be a rise in temperatures over the next 50 to 100 years, and again, this is something most of us take on faith. That temperature rise varies between 2 and 5 degrees C, that 5C being the upper mark, but most quotes are around that level of a 2C rise in temperature. Even if the temperature rose by the worst case scenario, that of 5C, then the mean temperature would still be well below 0C, that point where ice will begin to change to a liquid state. If that 5C rise was to occur, then the highest average temperature reached in Mid Summer in the Antarctica would still be Minus 10C, well below that point where the ice melts. This is not isolated areas where the temperature at the height of Summer might creep slightly above that 0C. (32F)

    Now, some of you might think this may be a pretty convenient argument, because the ice that is supposedly melting is around the edges, where that ice is actually sitting in the seawater, and where the air temperatures might actually be above that 0C. No matter really, because if that ice is sitting in the water, then that seawater is actually above 0C, so that would aid the ice in its reversion back to water by heat transfer from the seawater to the ice. So that sea ice is actually at a level where it is above 0C, and that is where the second part of High School Science comes into play.

    ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE.

    Any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

    This is not complex Science. We’ve all seen it so often that it has become second nature to us all,  so much so that we have actually forgotten the why of it. You can do this simple experiment yourself at home, and how many times has this been done by all of us without even thinking about it.

    Fill a large glass with ice cubes, and then fill the glass almost to the top with any liquid, be it water or a soft drink of your choice, and then check the level of that liquid line at the top. Then just leave it. Come back later after the ice has all melted, and that liquid line is the same as it was when the ice was in the glass. The melting ice has not caused the liquid in the glass to flow over the top of the glass.

    The same applies to sea ice.

    The iceberg that the Titanic hit in 1912 was four times the size of that ocean liner. If you could find one million floating bergs the size of this and tow them to the equator, and then stick around and watch them as they melt, they will not raise the level of the ocean the tiniest fraction of an inch.

    All the ice that we are told is melting is around the edges of Antarctica, and also in the Arctic Ocean, (again, something most of us take on absolute faith) and this ice is ice that is already in the surrounding Oceans.

    So, using Archimedes Principle, then there could be a billion tons or even ten to a hundred times that weight of sea ice, and if every last piece of that sea ice were to melt, then the levels of the Oceans around the World would not rise by even that tiniest fraction of an inch.

    What might actually cause the sea levels to rise is if the Ice actually ON the Continent of Antarctica were to melt, and melt in significant proportions. However, as shown at the link, those mean average temperatures on Continental Antarctica will never reach the point where they will begin to revert from ice to the liquid state, water, even if the worst case scenario were to occur with respect to temperature rise. That ice is also not like your small average ice cubes in a glass, or even the size of a Titanic sized iceberg that might melt over a period of months as it moves into considerably warmer water. At its thickest, the ice on the Antarctic Continental land mass is nearly 16,000 feet thick, (that’s all just ice) and even the top fraction of that cannot melt, as it never even approaches 0C. What also needs to be mentioned, and even highlighted in bold is that the land mass of the Continent of Antarctica is 98% of the size of all Antarctica, so only 2% of that ice is actually IN the surrounding Ocean, where that water is still only slightly above 0C, and not by very much, as during Winter, even that Sea freezes up.

    Take that above link again, and read what is shown there very carefully.

    Ice that is always at a temperature level below 0C will never even begin to turn to water.

    Sea Ice is already IN the World’s Oceans, and it cannot cause sea levels to rise.

    Al Gore is an absolute genius. He has succeeded in turning all his believers brains to mush. He asks them to take the complex Science on faith, and then succeeds absolutely in making us forget simple High School Science.

    Fisker Karma – Click above for high-res image gallery

    We’ve already seen at least one TV ad from Fisker Automotive, a minute-long spot that aired in the Los Angeles area almost a year ago (watch it here). Fisker recently consolidated its operations in California (sorry, Michigan), a move the company said would allow “greater efficiency and speeds up development of our new plug-in hybrids.” The latest sign that development is indeed moving forward is news that the plug-in vehicle start-up has hired the independent advertising agency Lambesis as its agency of record.

    As you might know (we didn’t), Lambesis is the force behind recent campaigns for SKYY Vodka, Grand Marnier and Dasani. If the company’s clips are a sign of things to come, we expect we’ll see leggy models draped over the Karma’s already sexy curves in no time. Apart from advertisements, Lambesis will also redesign Fisker’s corporate Web site, a project that should be done by this fall.

  • No Misconduct for Bush Interrogation Lawyers


    So I guess the Kos Kids and DUers are having yet another day of mourning at the hands of their dear leader…

    “The Justice Department is closing the books on its probe of the Bush administration lawyers whose legal memorandums authorized the CIA to waterboard terrorism suspects, but the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says he remains offended by the memos and will hold hearings

    An internal review said the department lawyers showed “poor judgment” but did not commit professional misconduct in giving CIA interrogators the go-ahead at the height of the U.S. war on terrorism to use harsh interrogation tactics.” (Read the whole story)

  • 85% Toyota Financial auction vehicles have been repaired, sold or for sale

    According to Ralph Fisco, Toyota Financial’s national remarketing manager, 85 percent of nearly 42,000 vehicles that were affected by the recall and parked at auctions when Toyota suspended sales last month have been repaired or sold or are on sale.

    Fisco said that Toyota dealerships first repaired vehicles owned by customers, before repairing unsold vehicles on lots or the used vehicles at nearby auctions. He said that most technicians worked nights and weekends to finish the repairs.

    Fisco said he expects all of the vehicles at auctions to be repaired by the middle of next week. Remaining vehicles that haven’t been repaired are in the Northeast, where bad weather caused a halt in repair efforts.

  • Bans & Sin Taxes

    I know that many of us part ways when it comes to smoking bans. As I recall a majority of you where happy when the bans began rearing their ugly little heads– touting the fact that your hair and clothes wouldn’t smell like smoke –personal freedoms be damned… I know, I know…second hand smoke…blah, blah. Second hand smoke wouldn’t be an issue if you were only in a bar here and there right? And maybe I don’t enjoy the second hand alcohol vapors from your Jack Daniels breath and would quite enjoy an alcohol ban in bars…

    Seriously though, in this horrific economy (that doesn’t show much of a recovery glimmer right now) has anyone thought about the effect of these bans and these sin taxes on the economy, jobs, exports and industry? How many Americans are employed by the tobacco industry? I’m guessing a conservative guess would still put the number in the millions? Not to mention the fact that American cigarettes are an absolute delicacy abroad.

    So when I read articles like this:

    “…Just a year after smokers were slapped with the single largest federal tobacco tax increase ever, public health advocates are urging states to follow up with their own cigarette tax hikes to offset declining revenues lost in the recession and to press more people into giving up smoking.

    A new report by a coalition of public health organizations says states could raise more than $9 billion in new annual revenue by increasing cigarette taxes by $1 per pack.

    The report, “Tobacco Taxes: A Win-Win-Win for Cash-Strapped States,” argues that the taxes also would cause more than 1.2 million adult smokers to quit, prevent more than 2.3 million kids from becoming smokers and save $52.8 billion in health care costs.

    But critics say a cigarette tax increase would be “foolish” and that the taxes are now “way too high” and target the poor…” (source)

    I never think “Woo hoo, they shouldn’t be smoking anyway.” I think “these so called ‘health advocates’ ate going to be mighty shell shocked if the tobacco industries go down. We’re at 10% unemployment and states are going bankrupt and are going to be unable to pay out benefits and we have advocacy groups out there trying to collapse an industry? I just don’t get it. So Darwinism doesn’t apply to business I guess?

But is it possible? No because every topic you can imagine is already written millions of times on web (except if you are a scientist and have discovered something new). What is important is the style you are using while writing. Your content should have a personal touch so that your readers can associate themselves with you.

    Clear and Concise In the last point we discussed about the style of writing. This point will elaborate more about it. Write in a clear and concise way so that the message you want to deliver reaches your audience easily. Avoid using slangs or jargons which are difficult to understand. Remember that your visitors don’t have time to think, they want everything without doing any effort. So make your content straight and simple.

    Credibility is important No matter what you write, how much research you’ve done and how many hours you put into it. It won’t go viral if you don’t have any loyal following that trusts you and can help you to promote it. Imagine if you and Darren Rowse of Problogger write the same thing at the same moment almost everybody would link to Problogger and you will become invisible in the crowd. So lesson learned is to make your content look compelling you need to have some credibility.

    People love interactions – Interaction should not only be in the form of comments, it could be in lot of other ways like inviting them to contribute a tip to the article or linking to their posts, doing quizzes and surveys etc. Asking your readers to help you and giving them some exposure in back is a great way to build huge compelling lists.   • Next-generation Ford Focus RS may come to the United States

    Want the Ford Focus RS in the United States? Yes, so do we. Well, be patient because the next-generation Focus RS might very well be on its way to the stateside.

    While Ford executive Derrick Kuzak was heading the development of the 2000 Ford Focus, Jost Capito was in charge of transforming the compact hatch into Europe’s hot Focus RS. Now that Kuzak is responsible for all of Ford’s global products, he has called on Capito to oversee performance vehicles for all markets as the director of global performance vehicles and motorsport business. Capito will now be responsible for aligning America’s SVT, Europe’s Team RS, and Australia’s FPV, all while establishing performance vehicles that can be sold on a global basis.

    In a recent interview with Automobile, when asked whether we’ll see the next-generation Ford Focus RS in the U.S., Capito said:

    When you see the global vehicle lines, they offer the opportunity of global performance vehicles. The two generations of Focus we’ve had so far [internationally] were great bases for performance vehicles. The new Focus is the same, so there’s no reason if there’s one in Europe, it wouldn’t be here.

    It was recently reported that the next-generation Ford Focus RS will drop the current 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo for a new 2.0L 4-cylinder EcoBoost direct-injection that will produce close to 300-hp.

  • Author Who Claimed $9.99 Not A Real Price For Books Admits Comments Were A Mistake

    We recently wrote about how author Douglas Preston made the following comments in the NY Times about ebook pricing:


    “The sense of entitlement of the American consumer is absolutely astonishing…. It’s the Wal-Mart mentality, which in my view is very unhealthy for our country. It’s this notion of not wanting to pay the real price of something…. It gives me pause when I get 50 e-mails saying ‘I’m never buying one of your books ever again. I’m moving on, you greedy, greedy author.’”

    We were among those who took offense at the comments, which suggested not an “entitlement” feeling from the American consumer, but from an author who didn’t want to listen to what his fans and potential customers were telling him.

    Of course, it looks like the backlash got even stronger following that quote in the NY Times. Robert Ring alerts us to io9’s coverage, saying that after the NYT’s piece came out, Preston’s book started getting one-star reviews on Amazon, with many people mentioning the NY Times quote as a reason not to buy the book.

    Preston and his co-author put out a note on their website trying to calm people down, and when he spoke to io9, basically admitted that his original comments were a mistake, saying that his readers have convinced him that ebooks should be cheap. However, given that, he still feels there should be release windows, that put out the more expensive physical book first:


    I think my comments were pretty stupid, to be frank. They came after a long month of being attacked by Kindle owners who blamed me personally for the fact that my publisher delayed the Kindle release for four months. I was frustrated and said some things to the New York Times reporter that did not reflect my actual views on the subject. I have been hearing back from many readers, some supporting my comments, many more criticizing them.

    I think most readers feel strongly that an ebook, which they can’t pass along to friends, can’t add to their library, and which comes with DRM attached, should be considerably cheaper than a real book. And I would have to agree. The real question is when this cheap ebook should be made available. Studios don’t release cheap DVDs the day a feature film is released, publishers don’t release the cheap paperback the day a hardcover comes out. I’m not sure why consumers should expect a cheap ebook on the day of publication either.

    Kudos to Preston for admitting his mistake, though I’m sure plenty of his fans and potential customers won’t like the windowing suggestion either. Hopefully they can convince him that holding back what your fans want is almost never a good business model and has a high likelihood of backfiring. If publishers want to sell more expensive hardcover books, they should focus on making sure that the scarce value people get for the physical book is that much greater than the ebook version. That is, rather than limiting how you can connect with fans, publishers should focus on creating positive reasons why fans would want to buy the physical book.

  • Glenwood man charged in 2008 killing

    A Glenwood man captured in Missouri has been charged in a March 2008 Chicago killing.

    Gregory Haynes, 27, of the 1100 block of West Iowa Street in Glenwood, was charged with first-degree murder Saturday night, according to a news release from the Chicago Police Department.

    In March 2008, Haynes allegedly shot and killed 24-year-old Terrell Thomas several times in a home in the 7500 block of South Carpenter Street in Chicago. Police identified Haynes and obtained an arrest warrant but never were able to capture him, the release said.

    Recently, Calumet Area detectives found out he was living in Hannibal, Mo., and they worked with Hannibal police, who arrested Haynes on Thursday. Haynes appeared in court to waive extradition, and Calumet Area detectives brought him back to Chicago, the release said.

    Haynes appeared for a bond hearing Sunday.

  • 4 hurt in Peotone crash

    Four people were hurt Sunday night when a car and a pickup collided in Peotone.

    The crash was reported at about 9:30 p.m. at 268 S. Center Road, Will County Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Gardner said.

    Four people were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, Gardner said.

    Peotone Fire Protection District could not be reached for comment.

  • 2 hurt in Garfield Ridge crash

    Two men were injured, one critically, Sunday night when their car crashed into a cement barrier in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge community, police said.

    A vehicle northbound on Cicero Avenue struck a cement barrier near 56th Street about 10:30 p.m., police said.

    The driver and passenger both men in their 20s were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The passenger was hospitalized in critical condition and the driver in serious condition.

    The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
