  • 2010 Geneva Preview: 2011 Volkswagen CrossPolo gets more off-road looking

Volkswagen will debut the next-generation version of the CrossPolo at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The rugged all-terrain look, based on the 2010 Volkswagen Polo, gives the CrossPolo a new design, unique world of colors and features, and a higher ride height (15 millimetre gain).

Power for the 2011 Volkswagen CrossPolo comes from a range of fuel-efficient engines with output ranging from 70-hp to 105-hp. Buyers can choose from a variety of three gasoline and three common rail TDI diesel engines. Three of those six engines can be ordered with a 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The new 2011 Volkswagen CrossPolo will hit dealerships later this May.

    2011 Volkswagen CrossPolo:

    Press Release:

World Premiere II: New CrossPolo Rocks in the Compact Class

Five-door all-around vehicle with clever details and rugged all-terrain look

New generation CrossPolo shows unique styling and range of colours

Wolfsburg / Geneva, 19 February 2010 – The next generation of the CrossPolo is ready for new adventures. The clever compact in rugged all-terrain look is celebrating its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. After the Polo base version presented in 2009 and the Polo BlueMotion (debut in 2010) with its superior and possibly record-breaking fuel efficiency, as well as the Polo GTI now also debuting in Geneva, the CrossPolo completes the series as a fourth model. With its refreshingly cheeky design, unique world of colours and features, and a higher ride height (15 millimetre gain), the five-door is very appealing as one of the most unconventional vehicles in its class.

This all-rounder is powered by extremely fuel-efficient engines with a power range from 51 kW / 70 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS. Buyers can choose from three petrol and three common rail TDI engines. Three of the six engines can be ordered with a 7-speed DSG, like the one used on vehicles such as the Polo GTI.

Fun and Cross: From special edition to production model

The new CrossPolo continues in the tradition of its successful predecessors: the Polo Fun and the first generation CrossPolo derived from it. Originally, a production run of only 5,000 units was planned for the special edition Polo Fun, but great demand exploded all forecasts. The consequence: the step was taken from special edition to production model and to the Cross version.

Exterior: Tough qualities and lifestyle character

The rugged-sporty character of the CrossPolo – always produced as a five-door – are reflected in many of its details. Especially striking: the individually styled front apron – in anthracite colour – with integrated front fog lights and large air inlet at the centre. It gets a black honeycomb insert bordered by fine chrome trim. Towards its lower edge, the bumper finishes with a section in light silver with the visual appearance of underbody protection. Taken from classic Polo styling are the upper radiator grille with its chrome inlay and the VW logo integrated here; the same applies to the dual headlights with standard daytime running lights.

The side profile of the CrossPolo also shows very tough qualities. Here sporty black wheelarch extensions and coordinated body sills set the styling. The latter continue visually into the lower door area. In off-road driving and in the jungle of metropolitan parking spaces, these rugged plastic guards protect the car from damage. Fitting the character of the CrossPolo are the 17-inch alloy wheels (“Budapest” style) in 5-spoke design with size 215/40 tyres.

Another unmistakable characteristic of the CrossPolo: the silver anodized roof rails. They are a traditional feature on this model, and are certainly not just decorative. They can be used to mount roof boxes and carrier systems with a weight of up to 75 kilograms. Colour coordinated with the roof railing, like on the previous model: the door mirrors that are always painted in silver. At the rear, the CrossPolo continues the rugged all-terrain look in the bumper, whose lower section is also designed in a black, rugged plastic. At its centre, a separate section painted in silver catches the eye that is styled to look like a diffuser.

Six exterior colours accentuate the powerful style of the CrossPolo; offered exclusively on the new Volkswagen are the colours “Magma Orange” and “Terra Beige Metallic”. Across the board, the upper areas of the bumpers and handles (door, tailgate) are painted in body colour, while the cover trim of the B and C pillars and the window frames are treated in a high-gloss black.

    Interior: Exciting and versatile

The high-end interior of the CrossPolo is a fitting match for the all-terrain look of the exterior. Here it is primarily the two-tone fabrics of the sport seats, the rear bench and the door trim that create a friendly and youthful ambiance. Up to four different colour trims are available, depending on the exterior colour. While the outer areas of the seats are always in anthracite, customers can choose from the colours “Hot Orange”, “Orange”, “Latte Macchiato” and “Grey” for the inner seat panels and middle sections of the door trim panels. On seat contact surfaces for the back and legs the fabrics (“Dimension” pattern) all have a black webbed structure, making them more durable. The “CrossPolo” signature is embroidered into the backrests of the front seats.

Throughout the cockpit materials are friendly to the touch. Take the steering wheel: It has a fine perforated leather cover; the steering wheel spokes are produced from a brushed chrome application. The seams of the steering wheel cover and the leather-trimmed parking brake handle are given the colour of the interior trim. The CrossPolo’s high level of quality is highlighted by the instrument panel, finished in “Slush” technology with its soft surface texture that is pleasant to the touch.

The CrossPolo has an ample array of standard equipment. In the interior, specific standard features include height-adjustable sport seats, an asymmetrically split rear bench and backrest, pockets on the backs of the front seats and sliding drawers under them, leather-trimmed steering wheel, centre armrest in front (with storage compartment), pedal caps in aluminium look and chrome on various switches and components. The latter include the door handles, surrounds for the window lift switches and air vents. Also standard: electric adjustable and heated door mirrors, electric window lifts all around, illuminated make-up mirrors in the sun visors, multi-function display (MFA) including tyre pressure monitoring (tyre pressure monitoring system, TPMS) and central locking with RF remote control.

Estate car qualities: Cargo space increases up to 952 litres

The new CrossPolo also shows off its versatile talents when it comes to space and efficient space utilisation. As mentioned, the rear bench can be folded with a standard 60:40 split. When it is completely folded, the car’s cargo capacity increases from 280 to 952 litres. The dual cargo floor – adjustable to two height levels – creates a continuously level loading surface. Four tie-down eyes simplify secure fastening of the cargo to be transported, while two hooks in the side trim panels keep bags from tipping over.

Engine variety: Three petrol, three diesel and one 7-speed DSG

The six engines of the CrossPolo have power levels between 51 kW / 70 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS. The entry level among the petrol engines is represented by the 70-PS version with a 1.2 litre displacement. Following at the next level is a 1.4-litre engine with 63 kW / 85 PS. The top petrol engine is the new 1.2 TSI with the mentioned 105 PS. This turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine accelerates the CrossPolo to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, reaches a respectable top speed of 188 km/h, yet has a combined fuel consumption of just 5.5 litres of fuel (equivalent to 128 g/km CO2). The highlight here: The Volkswagen not only attains these values in conjunction with the standard 6-speed gearbox, but also with the optional 7-speed DSG, an automatic. Also deliverable as an optional DSG version is the CrossPolo with 85 PS.

Among the quietest engines of their kind are the three common rail, direct-injection turbodiesels (TDI) fitted with a particulate filter. All engines have 1.6 litre displacement and are available at the power levels 55 kW / 75 PS, 66 kW / 90 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS. All three variants need just 4.3 litres of diesel per 100 km in combined mode and emit just 113 grams CO2 per kilometre. The 90-PS version can also be combined with the direct shift gearbox as an option; in this case, combined fuel consumption is 4.6 l/100 km. All CrossPolo engines meet the limits of the Euro-5 emissions standard.

Advance sales for the new Volkswagen are beginning in march. In Germany, the CrossPolo will already arrive at Volkswagen dealers and first customers at the end of May. Right afterwards, the market launch will continue across Europe and in Japan.

  • Elgin police shoot six ‘aggressive’ pit bulls

Elgin police officers had to shoot six aggressive pit bulls while executing a search warrant inside a Liberty Street home, authorities said Saturday.

Officers found a total of 21 pit bulls inside the residence Friday night along with more than 50 marijuana plants and materials used to grow the plants indoors, Deputy Chief Jeff Swoboda said.

Alejandro Campos-Rivera, 37, of 210 Liberty St., was charged with one felony count of animal cruelty and one felony count of marijuana production as a result of the search. On Saturday, a Kane County judge ordered Campos-Rivera held on a $750,000 bond.

Swoboda said police brought animal control officers along for the search because they suspected some pit bulls would be in the residence.

“We hoped that we could noose the dogs, if necessary, and remove them,” Swoboda said. “But the dogs were just too aggressive.”

Raw meat was on the floor of the home, and some of the dogs had gotten free of their cages and started attacking each other, Swoboda said.

No officers were injured during the incident.

“It seemed like the dogs were being trained to exhibit this kind of behavior,” he said.

Campos-Rivera’s next court date is March 5.

  • Fischbacher and Maze upset Vonn in Olympic super-G

Taking advantage of a tricky course-set arranged by one of her coaches, Fischbacher navigated her way down Franz’s Run in 1 minute, 20.14 seconds.

“It was really crazy,” Fischbacher said. “It was a really straight course and you had to push from start to finish.”

Tina Maze of Slovenia took a surprise silver, 0.49 second behind, and Vonn had to settle for bronze, 0.74 second back.

While many of the pre-race favorites struggled with a sharp right turn midway down, Vonn made it through that section without a problem. But then she lost nearly half a second on the bottom section of the course.

“Once I got past those difficult sections, I kind of backed off the gas pedal,” Vonn said. “I felt like I just didn’t ski as aggressively as I could have, and I think that’s where I lost the race.”

Vonn celebrated as if she had won, raising her arms in triumph, then was relaying a course report via a two-way radio up to her teammates still at the start when Fischbacher beat her.

Fischbacher looked like she didn’t believe it when she glanced at the scoreboard upon crossing the line, backing into the safety mattresses lining the finish area and nearly falling over.

“It’s just a great feeling,” Fischbacher said.

Vonn, who lives and trains in Vail, Colo., won gold in the downhill to open her Olympics and then wiped out in the slalom leg of the super-combined. Depending on how her bruised right shin holds up, the American still has two events remaining at the Vancouver Games — giant slalom and slalom.

Vonn was hurt Feb. 2, when she tumbled and slammed the top of her right boot against her shin during pre-Olympic practice in Austria. While other skiers were free-skiing the course Friday, Vonn took a complete day off to give her shin more time to heal.

“It’s definitely sore,” Vonn said. “I didn’t do the free-skiing on the race hill, which all the other athletes did. Maybe I should’ve done that, maybe I shouldn’t have. I don’t really know looking back what the right decision was. It definitely gave me time to get my shin better, and that’s what I need at this point.”

Vonn started 17th, Fischbacher skied 19th and Maze was 22nd out of the starting gate. With the race beginning at 10 a.m. PST, most of the course was covered with shade for the earlier starters, while later skiers had better visibility.

Johanna Schnarf of Italy finished fourth and Elisabeth Goergl of Austria fifth. Super-combined winner Maria Riesch of Germany was eighth and Swedish standout Anja Paerson was 11th.

Julia Mancuso, the American who won silver medals in her opening two events, almost went off course on that hard right turn, and finished ninth. The Squaw Valley, Calif., resident was the first skier on the course and had no reference points to look to as a guide for the most treacherous spots.

“The course up top was a lot faster than I expected,” Mancuso said. “I was just carrying more speed than I anticipated into that turn. I knew when I crossed the line … that I blew it.”

Still, with five events remaining, the United States already has collected its most Alpine medals — seven — at a single Winter Games, topping the five at Sarajevo in 1984.

Another American, Chelsea Marshall of Pittsfield, Vt., fell and did not finish. She got right back, though, and did not appear seriously injured.

Leanne Smith of Conway, N.H., finished 18th.

It’s the first Alpine victory at these games for Austria, which entered the race with only Goergl’s downhill bronze. At the 2006 Turin Games, Austria won 14 medals — four of them gold.

Fischbacher was reduced to tears after placing fourth in the downhill, finishing only three-hundredths of a second behind Goergl.

“At first I was really sad,” Fischbacher said. “Then I was just saying, ‘OK, maybe I make it in the super-G.’”

Fischbacher’s coach, Juergen Kriechbaum, set the super-G course following a weighted draw by the International Ski Federation that favors the higher-ranked super-G skiers.

While Vonn has already wrapped up the season-long World Cup super-G title by winning three of the five races held so far, Fischbacher stands third in the event standings.

Fischbacher won bronze behind Vonn and Marie-Marchand Arvier of France in the super-G at last season’s world championships in Val d’Isere, France. The Austrian also finished second behind Vonn in the last super-G before the Olympics, in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on Jan. 31.

Fischbacher has won two World Cup races in her career, one super-G and one downhill — the last coming almost exactly a year ago in Bansko, Bulgaria.

While she swept gold in downhill and super-G at last season’s worlds, Vonn doesn’t always dominate in super-G like she does in downhill. She went more than two years between January 2007 and February 2009 without a super-G victory before winning the final four races of last season. She also had some minor problems at the beginning of this season, finishing second and third in the opening two super-G’s.

Super-G is often tougher than downhill because there are no training runs. Skiers are allowed only to slowly slip down and inspect the course the morning of the race. Having the right equipment can also be more uncertain than in downhill, because there are fewer chances to test things out.

Maze’s result was the best finish for Slovenia in Winter Olympic history — in any sport. Previously, Slovenia had won six bronze medals. Alenka Dovzan, Jure Kosir and Katja Koren all won Alpine bronze in 1994, and cross-country skier Petra Majdic won Nordic bronze this week in the individual classical sprint despite competing with four broken ribs and a collapsed lung sustained in a training accident.

“Racing for Slovenia is sometimes hard because we are a small country but we have so many good athletes,” Maze said.

Maze won a silver medal in giant slalom at last season’s worlds and was fifth in super-combined Thursday. She has won eight World Cup races in her career but none in super-G, with her best finish in the event second at a World Cup race in St. Moritz three seasons ago.

Maze was pleased to finish in front of Vonn.

“She’s always first in World Cup and she’s always leading and it’s kind of annoying to be at start knowing she’ll probably be first,” Maze said. “But everything can happen and she’s human, too.”

Eight of the first 30 skiers failed to finish their runs, many of them going out on that tricky right turn about 45 seconds in.

Local favorite Emily Brydon of Canada had to stick her left ski high up into the air to try to get her balance back and ended up getting twisted around and falling on her backside. She appeared to avoid serious injury.

Marchand-Arvier and Nadja Kamer of Switzerland also went off course and did not finish.

Nicole Schmidhofer of Austria went down landing a jump and Marusa Ferk of Slovenia lost her edge around a left turn halfway down.

The next women’s race is giant slalom Wednesday.

“I’m really happy that we have three days before the next race, which is really going to help me,” Vonn said. “I’m not sure how many days of training I’m going to do, probably just one. That will give me two days of solid rest time.”

  • Chicago’s first-ever online alderman search closes

CHICAGO (WBBM)  — Even Mayor Daley won’t know until sometime in the next week how many applicants he has for the vacant 1st and 29th ward aldermanic seats.

The application window closed Friday night on Chicago’s first-ever solicitation for aldermanic appointees on the Internet. Now, Daley said, the director of his Office of Governmental Affairs, Joan Coogan, is going through the applications to see how many fit the prerequisites.

Candidates had to be registered to vote, residents of the ward for at least a year, owed no taxes or other outstanding debt to the city and have a clear criminal record. Those with convictions for bribery, perjury or any other “infamous crime” were told they need not apply.

Speaking for the first time on the unprecedented decision to advertise $110,556-a-year aldermanic jobs on the Internet, Daley said he’s looking for idea people.

“You meet some interesting people,” he said. “Besides that, you get some good ideas from them.”

Former Ald. Manny Flores (1) resigned to become chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission. Former Ald. Isaac Carothers had to resign his office upon entering a guilty plea to accepting $40,000 in home improvements, meals and sports tickets from a West Side developer in exchange for zoning changes that profited the developer.

Daley said it may not be the last such effort.

“This is the era of technology and many times people communicate through these various (Internet) technologies,” he said.

  • City offering free ice skating, dance lessons

CHICAGO (WBBM)  — If the Winter Olympics have inspired you to try skating, the city of Chicago is offering free lessons on the weekends through the end of the month at one of its most popular rinks.

The rink in Millennium park is crowded on a Saturday morning with new skaters learning how to stop, get up from the inevitable fall and safely turn.

The city is offering free lessons from 8 until 10 Saturday and Sunday mornings and holding ice dance parties and demonstrations Friday and Saturday nights.

Eva Silverman with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs says interest in the free lessons has picked up recently and she attributes that to the Olympics.

    Skate rentals cost $10.

If ice isn’t your medium, the city is also offering free dance lessons on the stage of the Pritzker Pavilion weekend afternoons.

Hour-long lessons followed by two hours of open dancing are conducted behind large glass doors that offer warmth and views of the park.

    Gear Ring

The Gear Ring by Kinekt Design – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Every spring, graduates of engineering schools across Canada earn their Iron Ring. It’s part of the pledge originally written by Rudyard Kipling in “The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer”. Legend has it that the iron was taken from the scraps of a bridge in the province of Quebec that, due to shoddy work on the part of the engineers in charge, collapsed nearly 100 years ago killing 75 construction workers

The story’s a historical fact; whether the rings are still made from that scrap iron is a topic for debate. Whatever your take on the tale, we have a new proposal (for mechanical engineering graduates at least): the Gear Ring by Kinekt Design.

The Gear Ring doesn’t just look mechanical – it actually is. As you can see from the video after the jump, the tiny gears across the face rotate as the larger gears that form the upper and lower segments of the ring spin in opposite directions. Call it a gimmick. Call it a distraction. We call it nifty – yes, nifty – and thank our man Mike for the tip.

  • Wheaton College selects new president

Wheaton College has selected Philip Ryken, senior pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, as its eighth president.

It will be something of a homecoming for Ryken, who grew up in Wheaton, graduated from the college and frequently wondered if he would return, according to one member of the college’s board of trustees.

The trustees voted Friday night to hire Ryken. The college’s staff and faculty were informed at a private meeting Saturday morning, about the same time Ryken was telling his church elders of his decision to accept the position.

Ryken graduated from Wheaton College in 1988, joined Tenth Presbyterian as a pastor in 1995 and became senior pastor in 2000.

He also is a member of the college’s board of trustees.

His father, Leland Ryken, is an English professor at the school.

LaTonya Taylor, Wheaton College’s director of media relations, refused to confirm the selection but said the college expects to make an official announcement concerning the president’s post on its Web site around noon today.

Ryken did not immediately return a phone message at his church.

But the Rev. D. Marion Clark, Ryken’s colleague of 10 years at Tenth Presbyterian, said Ryken informed the church’s elders he had been approached by the college and would take the Wheaton job in July.

“We were all certainly caught off guard and very much surprised but I understand that,” Clark said. “But we each stood and gave him our blessing and understanding. We recognize he is doing what he believes is God’s will.”

The 1,500-member congregation will be told of Ryken’s announcement following today’s services.

Clark said the entire congregation will sorely miss Ryken, who he believes is a “great choice” for Wheaton College.

“I, reluctantly, can tell you that Dr. Ryken would be a great fit anywhere he went but especially at Wheaton College,” Clark said. “Not only is he a great leader but he is a great listener, a dedicated and hard worker, a consensus builder and a man who takes challenges head on.”

Ryken will replace Duane Litfin, who became the college’s seventh president in 1993 and announced his retirement plans last March.

Ryken has a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton in 1988, a master of divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy from University of Oxford in 1995.

He is married with five children. In a statement on his church Web site he wrote, “When I am not playing with my kids, I enjoy shooting hoops, reading writers like Marilynne Robinson and Shusaku Endo, and pondering the relationship between Christianity and American culture.”

He was selected by a search committee formed last spring. The group’s goal was to make a recommendation to the college’s board of trustees by this spring and have the new president in place by July 1.

Members of the committee said in December they had considered more than 75 candidates and narrowed the field to a handful of finalists – although they would not say who or how many.

Donald Meyer, co-chairman of the search committee, said at the time the school’s next president needs solid leadership and academic skills, a strong theological position and the ability to continue Litfin’s vision.

Wheaton College officials have praised Litfin for keeping the school on track with its historic mission as a Christian liberal arts college with a graduate school and conservatory of music.

They said Litfin has worked to enhance the quality of the school’s faculty and been involved in a pair of major fundraising drives since 1994.

Ryken’s Tenth Presbyterian Church is in the heart of Philadelphia. The church was founded in 1828 and joined the Presbyterian Church in America in 1981.

  • Police charge one, seek more in Crystal Lake shooting

A Pennsylvania man has been jailed and police are searching for a car that left the scene of a Friday night shooting in Crystal Lake outside a restaurant.

Sang Yong Lee, 51, of the 1500 block of Carol Court in Jamison, Penn., was arrested Friday night and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a pistol, Crystal Lake police Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said.

During a fight with a male relative, Lee fired multiple gunshots around 6 p.m. at a parking lot outside the Kyoto Japanese Restaurant on the 6000 block of North Northwest Highway, police said. The bullets didn’t find their target and no one was hurt. Lee had sought the man out, Dziewior added.

A dark-colored, four-door sedan with Pennsylvania license plates was seen leaving the scene. Dziewior said police continue to try track the sedan, wanting to speak with the driver about possible involvement. Anyone who sees the car could call police at (815) 356-3620.

Meanwhile a McHenry County court judge set a $75,000 bond for Lee on Saturday. His next court date is 9 a.m. Wednesday.

  • Schools threatend by closure rally

CHICAGO (WBBM)  — Students and parents from several of the 10 schools threatened with closure by the Chicago Public Schools rallied at Rainbow/PUSH headquarters on the South Side.

Deneen School is scheduled to be re-staffed because of underperformance. Twins Armani and Amani Piett attend Deneen School said their experience has been good classroom instruction and great after-school programs.

“We might just have a nervous breakdown,” said one of the twins, drawing laughter and applause from those attending the rally.

They then shouted in unison, “Please don’t break up and destroy our Deneen family.”

Wendell Phillips High School also will be re-staffed. Brandon Cransberry ranks third in his junior class and is beginning to look at colleges.

“I want letters of recommendation for college,” he said. “How can I get a letter of recommendation from people I don’t know?”

Phillips student body president Aaron Walker said his teachers allow students to become somebody and have sharply improved their grades and ability to learn.

“Today, the Board of Education is telling the world that our teachers are inadequate,” he said. “We say that our teachers are brilliant and talented by measure.”

Walker said many of Phillips’ teachers stay late and dedicate themselves to helping students learn. He said if the school is re-staffed, a process known as “turnaround” at the Board, that extra assistance cannot be assured.

CEO Ron Huberman dropped the Gillespie, Mollison, Guggenheim and Paderewski Schools from the list last week. The board of Education meets Wednesday.
