  • Three men charged with trying to meet with minors

Three men have been charged with several crimes stemming from efforts to solicit minors on the Internet, authorities said Friday.

The charges resulted from two, 10-day investigations by the Carol Stream Police Department, officials said.

In the first investigation, a Carol Stream detective posed online as a 14-year-old girl and was asked by a man to meet for sexual favors. Adwaitkumar R. Pathak, 29, of Des Plaines, arrived at the meeting on Feb. 10 in Carol Stream with Gaurav Sharma, 21, of Palatine, authorities said. Both were taken into custody.

Pathak later was charged with unlawful solicitation of a minor and grooming, both felonies, as well as attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Felony grooming is a charge recently approved by the Illinois General Assembly and pertains to an adult who initiates a conversation online with a child or someone they believe to be a child and pursues it to the point of solicitation.

Sharma was charged with traveling to meet a minor, also a felony.

Bond was set at $200,000 for both men and they remained Friday in DuPage County jail, sheriff’s officials said.

In the second investigation that ended Thursday, a Carol Stream investigator again posed as a 14-year-old girl and was asked by a man to meet for sexual favors.

Police said Dale J. Kreidler, 27, of Plainfield, arrived at the meeting in Carol Stream and was taken into custody. He was later charged with unlawful solicitation of a minor and attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Sheriff’s officials said he also remained Friday in DuPage County jail on a $150,000 bond.

  • Could Looking At London’s 2012 Olympics Logo Land People In Prison?

Well, here’s a fun one sent in by ChurchHatesTucker. You may have heard the somewhat troubling story of the guy found guilty of child pornography for downloading images of the cartoon Simpsons performing sexual acts. It does seem a bit ridiculous to claim that naked versions of famous cartoon characters represent actual child porn, but… so sayeth the court. But, here’s the potential problem:

That is the logo for the 2012 Olympics in London. My first reaction to it was that it’s just hideous from a design standpoint, but others quickly noticed something worse. You can look at that logo and… um… see what appears to be Lisa Simpson… doing something she shouldn’t be doing. Yeah. Once you see it, it never goes away. So, as CHT notes, given that ruling of child porn for having an image of a Simpsons cartoon child performing sex acts… is looking at the 2012 Olympic logo going to be classified as viewing child porn now?

Day by day we see new things come out of T-mobileUSA’s version of the HD2, and with this one makes me a little happier for not ordering the European version. This new extract is from the guys at PPCGeeks, and they seem to have dissect the newest version of Swype keyboard and now you can test it out with their CAB. The keyboard is fairly similar to the current OmniaII version except it is a new build and is redesigned. Pocketnow is reporting that this new version is faster, smoother and more importantly larger than the O2 version. This CAB works on “All WVGA devices, but not sure on anything else.” If you have a VGA device and would like to test it out, please do so and give us the results.

  • Neat Trick: Ford nixing 900 jobs in Flat Rock while expanding production of Mustang, Mazda6

The desire to make more of the Ford Mustang and Mazda6, while improving efficiency and quality, is leading Ford to cut, not add jobs at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant. The plant’s 2,280-strong workforce is expected to decrease by 900, with Ford reducing the number of shifts from two to one and increasing the line speed by 35 percent.

Moving to just a single shift will help stabilize assembly at the plant, which produced 109,000 vehicles last year but experienced a lot of downtime when new vehicle sales cratered. In turn, the workers who remain to work the single shift should appreciate less idle time away from the job and stay sharper as a result, thereby increasing quality as well.

Those workers who have been cut will be moved to the Chicago assembly plant to help build the new Ford Explorer later this year, while others will be transferred to Michigan Assembly to build the new Ford Focus. Those not given new positions will be offered contract buyouts.

  • Supreme Court: Ex-Gov. Ryan can’t keep pension

The Illinois Supreme Court today rejected a bid by imprisoned former Gov. George Ryan to keep a portion of his lucrative government pension that was built up before his corrupt reign as governor and secretary of state.

The high courts 6-1 decision cost the disgraced former Republican governor $70,824 a year, sending an unmistakable message from the court to Illinois governing elite that cronyism and corruption do not pay.

As the victims of Ryans crimes, the taxpayers of the state of Illinois are under no obligation to now fund his retirement, Justice Robert R. Thomas wrote in the courts majority opinion.

The state General Assembly Retirement System had moved to strip Ryan, who turns 76 next Wednesday, of the entire $197,037 pension he was drawing annually up until his 2006 conviction on racketeering, conspiracy, mail fraud and other corruption charges linked to his tenure as governor and secretary of state.

But last year, a state appeals court reversed that decision, saying he should get to keep pension earnings from his 24 years as a Kankakee County official, state legislator and lieutenant governor posts in which he was not accused of criminal wrongdoing.

Although Ryan held multiple public offices over the course of his time in the system, all of those offices were in service to a single public employer the state of Illinois. (more…)

  • NIU shooting called ‘isolated incident’

Suspect in custody after altercation between two students ends in gunfire

Officials are calling the early Friday morning shooting on the Northern Illinois University campus an “isolated incident,” and police have a suspect in custody.

One student was shot in the incident and taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb for treatment. His name and condition have not yet been released, but the gunshot to his leg is not believed to be life threatening.

Police are not releasing the name of the suspect.

“The state’s attorney has requested that NIU not release the name at this time,” NIU President John Peters said.

The incident happened about 3:29 a.m. Friday outside of the Stevenson North residence hall in DeKalb. Authorities believe that an altercation between two students in their 20s led to the shooting.

The victim was identified as a Stevenson Hall resident, while the suspect lives in off-campus housing. The alleged shooter reportedly fled and was arrested by NIU police about five minutes later. The gun used in the incident has been recovered.

Officials could not comment on a motive or type of gun used.

Less than a week ago, NIU mourned the second anniversary of the Feb. 14, 2008, shooting at Cole Hall in which former student Steven Kazmierczak opened fire on a classroom, killing five students and wounding 12 others.

The news of the shooting shocked students on campus Friday morning.

English major Katie Martin was asleep inside her Stevenson Hall room when she received a call from her mother about the shooting before she left for her early morning job at a campus coffee stand.

“My mom called me at about 5 a.m. because the buses don’t run yet by the time we open, and we have to walk here, so she was quite worried considering it happened right outside the building,” Martin said.

Martin said she had not signed up for the campus text alert system, but was reconsidering following the Friday morning event.

An NIU text message alert of the shooting was received by 3:53 a.m. The message noted the campus had been locked down and that the suspect was in custody.

NIU grad student Beth Bryngelson said she was listening to public radio Friday morning while in bed when the news was reported.

“I jumped up and was like … ‘not again!’” Bryngelson said. “I wasn’t here two years ago but it was just shocking.”

By 5 a.m., the campus was reopened and classes were to go on as scheduled. Fifty minutes later, authorities signaled an “all clear.” Some bus routes were closed or altered Friday morning around the Stevenson and Grant residence hall towers.

Counselors have been made available for students. Student who had reactions to the shooting also were encouraged to talk with friends or family.

  • Tiger Woods: ‘I have let you down … I am deeply sorry’

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.Speaking publicly for the first time since he ran his SUV over a fire hydrant outside his home on Nov. 27, Tiger Woods apologized before a small group of friends and a smaller group of media members in the Sunset Room at PGA headquarters.

“I want to say to you I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior,” Woods said. “I have let you down.”

Outside millions watched, listened, read on just about every media outlet imaginable.

Woods read from a prepared statement and kept his composure. He became very emphatic when he talked about the reported domestic violence between him and his wife Elin Nordegren.
“Elin never hit me that night or any other night,” Woods said raising his voice. “There has never been an episode of domestic violence in our marriage. Elin never hit me that night or any other night.”

Woods left open his return to golf during the 13-minute speech, saying it might happen this year or it might not. He also scolded the media for their intrusion into his family’s personal life and unsubstantiated reports about his use of steroids.

“I was unfaithful, Woods said. “I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable.” Elin was not obviously present.

As for coming back to the PGA Tour, Woods said: “I do plan to return to golf one day. I just don’t know when that day will be. I don’t rule out it will be this year.”

Woods said he is solely responsible for his actions and was in treatment for 45 days. He said he will return for more therapy. He also insisted there were no instances of domestic abuse in his marriage.

Meanwhile, Woods will return to sex-addiction therapy.

The world’s most recognizable athlete addressed the shocking and sordid sex scandal that has consumed his life since late November. But, now he will return to the clinic where he has been undergoing therapy, according to a letter from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem obtained by The Associated Press.

Finchem’s letter to the PGA Tour policy board and other officials explained why Woods chose Friday to make his first public comments.

“As we understand it, Tiger’s therapy called for a week’s break at this time during which he has spent a few days with his children and then will make his statement before returning,” Finchem said in the letter Thursday. “Accordingly, there was very little flexibility in the date for the announcement.”

The letter shed no light on whether Woods plans to return to the tour anytime soon.

Woods’ statement came during the Match Play Championship, sponsored by Accenture, the first company to drop Woods as a pitchman.

Ernie Els was among players who was upset to learn that Woods had chosen the week of a World Golf Championship for a public appearance that was sure to take attention away from the tournament. “It’s selfish,” Els told Golfweek magazine.

Finchem told reporters in Marana, Ariz., earlier this week that he didn’t think Woods’ appearance would undermine Accenture, and that Woods’ handlers “have their own reasons for their schedule.”

In the letter, he said the tour discussed the timing with Accenture and “they understand that the PGA Tour was not involved in determining the timing of the statement.” Finchem also noted that Woods’ comments would be over well before television coverage of the third round from Dove Mountain.

The PGA Tour made available its sprawling, Mediterranean-styled clubhouse for the announcement, and was helping set up adjacent ballrooms at the nearby Sawgrass Marriott for media, where they watched Woods on closed-circuit TV. Finchem said in the letter that Woods’ management asked for the facilities, and “we agreed as we would for any member of the PGA Tour.”

About 300 people registered as media at the site, and about 25 satellite trucks were parked outside. Television crews by the dozen were broadcasting from the scene.

  • Driver charged in kid’s death allegedly on coke, pot

A South Side man accused of driving drunk when he allegedly hit and killed a 6-year-old girl Tuesday also had cocaine in his system and admitted to smoking marijuana shortly before the fatal crash, Cook County prosecutors said in court Friday.

With two dozen or so members of his family in the audience, Eddie Lumpkin, 48, was ordered held on $500,000 bail during a hearing today at the Criminal Courts building.

But Lumpkin’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, strongly defended his client’s character and actions on the night of the crash.

“As soon as the accident happened, he stopped and tried to help the people, who were running across the street through traffic, across the median when they shouldn’t have been,” Greenberg told reporters after the hearing.

Greenberg said the evidence will show his client was sober the night of the crash.

Lumpkin, an auto mechanic, is charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI. Prosecutors allege Lumpkin was speeding southbound in a Dodge Caravan on Ashland Avenue just north of 74th Street about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when he crashed into first-grader Jada Washington and her aunt, Tiuette Richardson, 21, who were both standing on the median. Jada and her aunt were walking to a corner store to buy candy.

Prosecutors said Jada’s body hit the windshield and she was then thrown onto the street. Richardson, who is recovering from her injuries, was thrown across the northbound lanes and landed near the curb, prosecutors said.

Cook County prosecutor Angel Essig said Lumpkin failed a field sobriety test, and that “subsequent chemical testing” showed he had cocaine in his system. Lumpkin admitted to smoking pot “prior to the incident,” Essig said.

Two 40-ounce bottles of beer were found in Lumpkin’s vehicle, one of which was open, Essig said. Prosecutors say Lumpkin admitted to buying one of the bottles of beer that evening on his way home from work.

But Greenberg said the evidence will show his client was sober the night of the crash and had not been using cocaine. Greenberg said his client is taking Tylenol for a workplace back injury.

Between 1987 and January of this year, Lumpkin has been stopped more than two dozen times and has received about 40 tickets for such offenses as disregarding a stop sign and operating a motor vehicle without insurance, according to court records.

Greenberg said that’s not the same as being “convicted” of either traffic or criminal offenses.

“He’s a hard-working family man,” Greenberg said. “He was driving home from work. So, yes, he should have been driving.”

But Greenberg did say that his client has significant vision problems, for which he wears thick glasses.

  • Pathologist: Savio’s death was homicide

A renowned pathologist says the 2004 death of Drew Peterson’s ex-wife was no accident.

Michael Baden is the former chief medical examiner of New York City. He contends Kathleen Savio not only drowned in her bathtub, she was beaten.

Peterson has pleaded innocent to killing Savio. Baden testified Friday at a hearing to determine what hearsay evidence will be allowed at the former Bolingbrook police officer’s upcoming trial.

Savio’s family asked Baden to conduct an autopsy in 2007 after Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared. Savio’s death was originally classified as an accident, but it’s now been reclassified as a homicide.

Baden was the third pathologist to testify at Peterson’s hearing. Two said Savio’s death was a homicide, while a pathologist called by the defense believes it was an accident.

Cadillac CTS Recaro Seats – Click above to enlarge

Around the Autoblog campfire, the second-generation Cadillac CTS remains one of our favorite sedans of recent years. For one thing, the interior of the gen-two CTS is vastly better executed than the original. But like the Corvette, it has one weakness: The seats. They aren’t terrible, just not great. That error has been rectified with news from Cadillac today that multi-adjustable power-actuated Recaro front seats are now available as an option. These same seats have been available in the supercharged CTS-V, but now buyers of the V6 sedan can get them as well.

At $2,800 the new seats don’t come cheap, but you will definitely be hooked once you sit in them and start taking a few hard corners. Adjustable side bolsters and extendable seat cushions for those of us with long thighs allow these new thrones to fit any driver. Frankly, we’d love to seem them installed in the Corvette ZR1 as well, but the engineers tell us they are a bit too wide for the C6. When the two-door, fast-back CTS coupe goes on sale this summer, these same seats will also be available in both the V6- and LSA-powered variants. Unfortunately, those who opt for the extra cargo space of the Sportwagon will have to make do with the standard seats.
