  • NG 6 intermediate plates with pressure control valves and bypass valves

HAWE Hydraulik SE, Munich, has developed additional versions of its intermediate plate, type NZP, with the hole pattern NG 6, thereby pursuing its strategy of offering components with tried and tested HAWE technology and hole patterns that conform with industry standards.

Newly added are versions for pressure control valves of the types CDK and CLK. Both these types are built as directional seated valves, which means that they are leakproof when closed. The CLK pressure control valve has an additional safety valve function so it can be integrated into clamping circuits that are pressurized for an extended period of time and subjected to the unwanted pressure increases due to temperature oscillations. The valve is equally well suited for systems in which processing forces or other external factors can trigger inadmissible high pressure peaks. The combination of the NZP intermediate plate with pressure control valves was devised to withstand operating pressures of up to 500 bar and a volume flow of up to 22 l/min.

Further new versions are realized by combining the intermediate plate with directional seated bypass valves. These arrangements connect the hydro consumer and/or the return at volume flows of up to 20 l/min and operating pressure of up to 400 bar, depending on the dimension of the solenoid. Other versions with energy-saving 8-Watt solenoids are also available.

The combination of intermediate plates and drain valves can be used to relieve consumers that are shut with zero-leakage directional seated valves.

Intermediate plates enable the flexible and straightforward assembly of hydraulic controls. Already existing intermediate plate versions can be combined with throttle valves and restrictor check valves as well as proportional pressure valves.

  • CHART OF THE DAY: Asia Killed Us With Low-End Labor, And Now They’re About To Finish The Job

Asia is frequently lambasted as a source of low cost ‘slave’ labor by skeptics. The standard notion is that armies of Chinese communist automatons are building faulty plastic toys and copy-cat products, undercutting far more skilled, educated, and innovative Western workers.

While this belief may have had some basis over the last few decades, it’s hard time for a reality check.

Emerging Asia, which doesn’t include Japan, now has more skilled researchers than any other economic unit in the world, as shown in the chart below from Citi based on UNESCO data.

As you can see, Asia made great strides in increasing its share of skilled researchers from 2002 – 2007. They will make even larger ones going forward since education levels are rapidly improving.

Thus,  we can easily imagine that Emerging Asia will be immensely competitive very soon — it will have lower cost labor (since many Asians are still moving up the wealth chain), but at the same time it will have tons of highly skilled, educated (and yes wealthy) people at the same time. Asian industries are likely to be competitive both at the low- and high-end in the not too distant future. Ouch.

P.S. And by the way, hiding from the global economy won’t be a successful long-term solution here. It would just mean that 10 – 20 years forward Emerging Asian competitiveness would be even stronger while American and European competitiveness would have gone nowhere. Double Ouch.

  • Protein Powders: How Do They Measure Up?

protein powderLast week’s whey protein post generated a ton of great questions. I’m going to try to get to as many as I can today, and I’ll include information on alternative protein powders at the end. As always, let me know if I miss anything and I’ll try to rectify that in the future.

What about oxidized cholesterol? Aren’t most whey protein concentrates exposed to significant amounts of heating that oxidizes the cholesterol?

Oxidized cholesterol is potentially dangerous. In fact, along with Ancel Keys’ fudging of the saturated fat intake data, it was the oxidized cholesterol-fed rabbit model that jumpstarted the crusade against fat and cholesterol. Undamaged dietary cholesterol wasn’t atherosclerotic; oxidized dietary cholesterol was the stuff that contributed to arterial plaque (feeding pure cholesterol to an obligate herbivore played a part, too) in the rabbit.

Depending on how whey protein concentrate is processed, some of its cholesterol is oxidized. The higher the temperature used, the greater the oxidation. Sounds horrible, right? Not so fast. The average serving of whey protein concentrate contains 30 mg of cholesterol. Let’s assume every last milligram of that is oxidized – sounds pretty terrible, right? Maybe not. Consider the average egg, which contains 220 mg of cholesterol. If you scramble that egg, breaking the yolk and exposing it to oxygen and heat, a significant portion of the cholesterol may be oxidized. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been known to put away half a dozen eggs in a single sitting. Granted, I usually fry mine in butter and try to preserve the structure of the yolk (partly because it tastes better, and partly to dip my bacon), but I’d wager that anyone who eats cooked eggs on a regular basis eats some small amount of oxidized cholesterol, too. Even if just a tiny fraction of that 220 mg/egg cholesterol is oxidized, it’s comparable to the amount you’re getting from a whey protein shake every now and then.

I’m not too concerned with it, personally. We already know that regular egg consumption has a net positive effect on blood lipids, including levels of highly oxidative small, dense LDL. We also know that whey protein supplementation decreases VLDL, at least in rats, and that lactoferrin, a whey protein concentrate component, appears to reduce LDL oxidation. Even if you’re consuming a modicum of oxidized dietary cholesterol from the occasional scoop of whey protein power, the benefits – including increased lean mass, better recovery from strength training, as well as a reduction in atherogenic lipids – seem to outweigh any potential negatives. Additionally, when we consume oxidized cholesterol in the bioreactor that is the stomach (at a very low pH) we may also be mitigating some of the potential harmful effects of oxidized cholesterol.

Is grass-fed whey protein worth the extra cost?

I don’t think so. If ethical concerns are your primary reasons for eating grass-fed beef and dairy, it might make sense to shell out the extra dough for grass-fed whey powder, but if you’re drawn to it for the health benefits, don’t bother. There really aren’t any. Think about why we prefer pastured animal products in the first place – favorable fatty acid profiles, more fat-soluble vitamins, cleaner, better-tasting meat (once you get used to beef tasting like beef). Why do we take protein powder? For the protein. We aren’t expecting incredible flavor, vast amounts of vitamins, or healthy fats; we just want some fast-acting protein. Feel free to use grass-fed whey protein, but don’t think it’s doing anything special. You’re better off buying grass-fed meat (and dairy) instead.

When’s the best time to take whey protein, if I’m looking for increased protein synthesis and muscle recovery?

I generally don’t worry about meal timing too much, but if you do, take your whey protein within a half hour post-workout. Your muscles will be insulin sensitive and primed for nutrients and glycogen, so the insulinogenic release from the whey will be a boon.

    Other Proteins

Of course, whey isn’t the only protein powder around. It’s my personal favorite for a few reasons (the anti-atherogenic qualities, the fast absorption, the positive effects on lean mass development), but a number of you asked about other sources, so here’s some info on a few of the more popular varieties, including their respective biological values (BV).

The BV is one way to measure a protein’s “usability.” The higher the BV, the greater the proportion of available protein that can be synthesized by the body’s cells. Higher BVs also indicate a greater amount of essential amino acids – those amino acids that the body cannot synthesize or convert on its own and must instead obtain from the diet. Whey protein concentrate, for example, has a biological value of 104, while isolate has a BV of 100. Milk itself? 91. Beef? 80. You want a high biological value in your powders especially, since their only reason for existing is to provide a quick, easy influx of dietary protein. Interestingly, BV goes down with greater protein intake. Whey’s BV of 104 is at intakes of 0.2g/kg; it drops to around 70 at 0.5g/kg. While this isn’t really an issue for a PBer who uses shakes sparingly as supplements and gets most of his or her protein from whole foods, it might dissuade one from getting all their protein from powder.

Note, though, that biological value does not refer to the amount of protein in the powder; it only refers to the usability of the protein in the powder. A particular powder might be 60% protein, and the biological value would tell you exactly how much of that 60% is usable by the body. Different powders have different protein contents. Hemp protein, for example, is often about 50% protein, but it varies by the manufacturer. A quick glance at the nutrition facts should clue you in.

There’s also the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS), which is the method by which the World Health Organization evaluates protein value. It’s a newer model, and it’s based on the amino acid requirements of humans, specifically children. Most protein powders (and their consumers) stick with the BV, but the PDCAAS is gaining in popularity. Whey protein (both isolate and concentrate) has an optimum PDCAAS of 1.

    Casein Protein

    BV – 77

    PDCAAS – 1

Derived from that other variety of milk protein, casein protein powder doesn’t absorb as quickly as whey. It’s a complete protein with the full range of amino acids (including ample amounts of glutamine, which transports nitrogen to tissue), just like whey, but it’s potentially far more problematic because of the autoimmune/allergen issue. Those with dairy allergies should probably avoid it. Bodybuilders swear by casein; they dig it for the slow absorption rate and tend to take it before bedtime. One (industry funded) study found that casein was inferior to whey protein in terms of body composition and muscular strength outcomes, so I wouldn’t replace whey with casein just yet. There may be some benefit to taking both, though, seeing as how both casein and whey are a package deal in nature. Milk is certainly a popular post-workout recovery drink, and it contains both casein and whey.

    Egg White Protein

    BV – 100

    PDCAAS – 1

Egg white protein powder is another highly bioavailable protein choice. In fact, it’s so bioavailable that it represents the BV against which all others are compared (that’s why whey can have a BV exceeding 100). All the amino acids are represented. If you’re concerned about oxidized cholesterol, stay away from whole egg protein powder. You may be able to get a hold of a minimally processed whole egg powder with very little oxidation, but you’ll probably end up spending a ton of money. Just eat actual eggs or stick with egg white powder instead. The Paleo Diet blog recommends egg white protein powder for those with autoimmune disease, but it’s worth noting that egg whites themselves can be rather potent allergens, so use caution.

    Pea Protein

    BV – 65

    PDCAAS – 0.69

I’m generally down on vegetarian protein powders. In my experience, they just don’t work as well as the animal-based ones. We’re not meant to get all our protein from vegetable sources, and our absorption of vegetable-based protein isn’t as efficient, so you have to consume far more pea protein powder just to get enough – and this stuff can get pretty pricey. No protein powder is perfectly Primal, but pea protein powder is even less so. If egg and milk protein powders are off limits for whatever reason, though, give pea protein a shot.

    Rice Protein

    BV – 83

    PDCAAS – 0.47

Rice protein powder is created by isolating the protein from the brown rice grain. Rice is already one of the least offensive grains out there, so a smattering of rice-based amino acids will work okay. You’re not going to absorb or digest the rice protein with as much ease as with animal-based protein, but that’s fine. A reader mentioned that any form of dairy protein powder resulted in great discomfort; if that’s true, rice protein powder may be a good choice.

    Hemp Protein

I was unable to get a reliable score, but the general consensus was “lower BV” than other powders.

    PDCAAS – 0.46

Hemp is another option for vegetarians (or nutrition explorers). Like the other vegetarian protein powders, hemp is quite a bit lower in protein content than the animal protein-based powders (or even other vegetarian powders). It’s generally loaded with tons of fiber and a bit more fat than other powders, but fiber-free versions do exist. Again, not my first choice, and it’s fairly expensive, but hemp powder does taste relatively good.

A good rule is to choose protein powders that have both high BVs and high PDCAASs.

    Do You Need Protein Powder?

Whey protein powder is proven to be effective, and it’s ubiquitous and inexpensive. Protein powder in general can help athletes recover from training, and it doesn’t have to be dairy-based, if you’re sensitive. There’s nothing wrong with dabbling (or even throwing yourself into) in alternative protein powders, and in the case of casein and egg whites, you might even see added benefits by incorporating them into your whey regimen.

But that doesn’t mean you need protein powder.

Take your time and evaluate your diet. You may find that you don’t need powder supplements. I certainly don’t need any myself, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a big whey shake after an intense workout session from time to time, just for the anabolic effects if not for the convenience and taste. If you’re not getting enough protein, or you can’t find the time to cook every single meal, try some protein powder. Otherwise, eat a steak.

  • Record number of Illinois students take AP exams

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois State Board of Education says a record numbers of Illinois students took Advanced Placement exams last year.

But the proportion of students who passed the college-level exams continues to decline.

Data released this week shows about 65 percent of the 2009 graduates who took an AP exam scored a 3 or higher.

Five years ago, 72 percent of students posted a passing grade.

Scores range from 1 to 5 and a 3 is needed to earn college credit.

Officials with the College Board says the decline in pass rates is due to more diverse populations taking the exams. More low-income and minority students are taking AP exams, but many don’t have adequate preparation.

It is a trend that is true nationwide.

  • American investors beginning to see greenbacks in green thinking

    From Green Right Now Reports

Critics of sustainable living initiatives often pin their arguments on the possibility of dubious return on investment. But a recent survey of American investors indicates that many now believe going green can be good for the economy – and their own pocketbooks — as well.

The survey, the results of which were released this week by Allianz Global Investors, said 73 percent of all investors who responded think policies to promote “green” practices and technologies will have a positive impact on economic growth. Fifty-seven percent believe “green” jobs can help turn around the U.S. economy.

“It’s clear to me that government investment in the environment will be an important engine for economic renewal in the United States,” said Bozena Jankowska, head of the RCM Sustainability Research Team and lead portfolio manager of the Allianz RCM Global EcoTrends Fund.

Jankowska noted that in his State of the Union address, President Obama said “the nation that leads the clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy, and America must be that nation.”

“This sentiment signals unwavering support which could represent a very significant opportunity for investors,” Jankowska said.

The poll of 1,000 adults, conducted for a third consecutive year, probed investor understanding and attitudes toward the environment as an investment opportunity. The survey was conducted via the Internet between Dec. 28, 2009 and Jan. 12, 2010 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media, a division of GfK Custom Research North America.

Participation was limited to individuals who at least shared responsibility for investment decisions in households with financial assets of $100,000 and up.

    Other findings include:

    • 63 percent of investors classified the environment as the most desirable opportunity of 11 categories offered.
    • Between 2007 and 2009, the number of investors who say they already have invested in environmental trends jumped from 17 percent to 29 percent.
    • 54 percent of all investors said they are at least “somewhat likely” to invest in environmental technology over the next year.
    • n  78 percent of investors believed we were likely to see more green initiatives in the first year of the Obama Administration than in eight years of the Bush Administration.
    • Only 49 percent of investors said Obama has done as much as he should to promote environmental investment in his first year.
    • In the previous year’s survey, 74 percent of investors expected the new Congress to be more supportive of environmental technologies than its predecessor. This year, only 34 percent said the current Congress has done as much as it should.

Despite an increased optimism, not all investors were confident about jumping in:

    • 59 percent view environmental investment as mostly socially responsible, while just 41 percent see it as a good financial investment.
    • More than two-thirds (69%) said they would need to consult a financial advisor for help investing in the environment.
    • Among those with a financial advisor, 76 percent believe their advisor is at least somewhat knowledgeable about environmental investing, and 50% think it is important that their advisor bring them more environment-related investment opportunities.
    • 72% of those investors say that their financial advisor has yet to recommend an environmental investment opportunity.

We have been writing for days now that the bailout of Greece’s debt crisis was likely to mirror TARP.

What we meant by that was that the promise of the bailout would come first, with the details to be worked out later.

And that’s exactly what has happened. We now have a vague promise of a commitment that Europe will stand behind Greece. The details, however, won’t be worked out for several days. We wouldn’t be surprised if it takes even longer than that.

The Troubled Asset Relief Program went from being a blanket grant to the Treasury Department to do anything it takes, to being a plan to buy toxic mortgage assets (with a possibility, insisted upon by Republican House members, of putting asset insurance in place instead), to being a capital injection program. Later, it spun off all sorts of weird children with various names: TGLIF, TALF, etc.

So you shouldn’t expect that we’ll get anything final on the shape of the Greek bailout on Monday. This thing is likely to shift, especially if the “next dominos” start to tumble. This isn’t the end of the crisis or the bailout. It is the beginning.

Kia has been making waves this past year or so with introductions like the Soul and the Forte Koup, and for 2010, they hope to be make an impact on the racetrack as well. Here at the Chicago Auto Show, Kia is displaying their new Forte Koup racecar that is competing in Grand-Am’s Continental Sports Car Challenge series for 2010. The Korean manufacturer’s first foray into motorsports will be managed by Georgia-based Kinetic Motorsports who will field a pair of cars in the Street Tuner (ST) class against cars like the Mazda3, BMW 330, and Volkswagen GTI.

The #10 car at the show was fresh off the truck from its debut at the Fresh From Florida 200 at Daytona Speedway last month, where it finished an underwhelming 31st in class. The #12 sister car fared a little better, ending the race in a respectable 19th place. You can watch both cars in action on SPEED Channel’s tape-delayed broadcast of the race on February 13th at 7:00 pm EST. Until then, you can browse through our photos in the gallery below.

  • Would A Moron In A Hurry Be Confused By The Difference Between A High School And A Pickup Truck?

Copycense points us to a story from Florida involving a high school that quite clearly copied the logo of the Dodge Ram for the school mascot:

After someone alerted Chrysler, the lawyers got involved, and the school is now in the process of changing its logo and removing it from everything (including the gym floor). My first though was wondering whether or not this was “use in commerce,” which is required for trademark infringement. I think a lawyer could make an argument that a school’s usage isn’t use in commerce — but perhaps that’s undermined by the logo appearing on school clothing (though, it’s not clear that the clothes are for sale, or just what the sports teams get). However, I do wonder if the Dodge logo trademark covers use on gymnasium floors and clothing…

But, honestly, the bigger issue is why the hell would Chrysler be upset about this? At worst it’s getting a ton of free advertising from this school, with many students having a feeling of affinity for the logo, which could potentially increase their interest in buying a Dodge in the future. Car companies spend lots of money on sponsorship to get their logos seen by lots of people. And here’s a school that’s done that entirely for free… and Chrysler sends in the lawyers?
