  • Fired For Fleeing Fire: 15 Lose Their Jobs

15 people were fired last week for abandoning their jobs picking strawberries in California when a wildfire got a little too close to where they were.

The Springs Fire left 28,000 acres burned and devastated a large portion of Ventura County, but that didn’t stop the foremen at a nearby strawberry farm from threatening the employees with termination if they left. The workers took off anyway due to the large amount of smoke and ash in the air.

“The ashes were falling on top of us,” one worker told NBC LA. “They told us if we leave, there would be no job to return to.”

Indeed, they were fired when they returned to their jobs on May 3rd, and contacted the United Farm Workers for help even though they weren’t part of a union.

“No worker shall work under conditions where they feel his life or health is in danger,” Lauro Barrajas of the UFW said.

Eventually, the workers were offered their jobs back, but only one person accepted.

  • Paltrow: “I’m Never Going Again” To Met Gala

A lot of people would kill for an invite to the annual Met Gala for the Costume Institute, but Gwyneth Paltrow says she won’t be back.

The 40-year old actress attended the ball in a long-sleeved pink Valentino gown and said that the evening was too hot for her to enjoy herself.

“I’m never going again,” she said. “It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.”

Of course, that could have been avoided had she chosen a dress that was more appropriate for the weather, but she apparently had her own agenda. Whatever it was, it didn’t include being like everyone else, because she admitted to ignoring this year’s couture/punk theme. Perhaps she just didn’t want a repeat of her wardrobe mishap at the premiere of “Iron Man 3″.

  • Puppy Locked In Car For A Month, Survives

A miracle puppy has survived after being locked in a car for almost a month, Missouri authorities say.

When a Chevy Suburban was towed to a city lot on April 8th, the doors were locked and authorities couldn’t enter the vehicle. For that reason, the puppy, who has been named Kia by her rescuers, went unnoticed until Monday, when an employee at the tow lot saw her lying in the window.

“We will give her some proper medical care. She is very, very dehydrated and obviously very malnourished,” said Tori Fugate, spokeswoman for the Kansas City Pet Project. “We will get some food in her.”

The dog apparently survived on fast food remnants from bags strewn about the vehicle but obviously had no access to water the entire time she was locked up. Despite being dehydrated, Kia is recovering from her long stay inside the car and is living with a foster family until she is well enough to go up for adoption.

The car, which was found abandoned and blocking an interstate on-ramp, was protected by state law, which says no one can enter a locked vehicle until it is cleared to go up for auction. If it hadn’t been for a chance sighting, Kia would probably have died within the week.

“I am not sure how the dog miraculously survived its encampment,” government spokesman Danny Rotert said. “We are very happy Kia has found a foster home. We’re excited that she’s healthy and on the mend. It’s pretty miraculous, and we are so sorry that it happened. Poor pup.”

  • Swallowed By Hippo: A Man’s Harrowing Tale

River guide Paul Templer was an experienced traveler by the age of 27; he led tours down the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe many times, and had encountered rambunctious animals there before. But none would prove to be so terrifying as the hippo that nearly ate him 17 years ago.

Templer recently sat down and wrote his tale for the Guardian and says he had met the same hippo before; it had even rushed at him in a “half-hearted” way when he moved to close to its territory. But on this day, the bull would become so agitated that a half-hearted attack grew into a full-fledged riot.

“We were near the end of the tour, the light was softening and we were taking in the tranquillity,” Templer wrote. “The solid whack I felt behind me took me by surprise. I turned just in time to see Evans, who had been flung out of his boat, flying through the air. His boat, with his two clients still in it, had been lifted half out of the water on the back of the huge bull hippo.”

Templer says he shouted to the other guides to get their clients to safety before turning to try and grab Evans. But just as he was about to grab the man’s hand, he was enveloped in darkness.

“There was no transition at all, no sense of approaching danger. It was as if I had suddenly gone blind and deaf,” he says.

What happened next is enough to make any reader shudder in terror.

“I was aware that my legs were surrounded by water, but my top half was almost dry. I seemed to be trapped in something slimy. There was a terrible, sulfurous smell, like rotten eggs, and a tremendous pressure against my chest. My arms were trapped but I managed to free one hand and felt around – my palm passed through the wiry bristles of the hippo’s snout. It was only then that I realized I was underwater, trapped up to my waist in his mouth.”

He managed to free himself when the hippo took a breath, only to be dragged under again. Just when he began to resign himself to a dark, watery death, the animal spat him out and he was dragged to safety by his friends. He was alive, but just barely; the hippo left him with over 40 puncture wounds–one so deep that part of his lung was visible–and only one arm.

As for Templer’s friend Evans, he wasn’t so lucky. His body was found downriver two days later.

“Attempts were made to find and kill the rogue hippo, but he seemed to have gone into hiding,” Templer says. ” I’m convinced, though, that I met him one more time. Two years later I led an expedition down the Zambezi and as we drifted past the stretch where the attack had taken place, a huge hippo lurched out of the water next to my canoe. I screamed so loudly that those with me said they’d never heard anything like it. He dived back under and was never seen again. I’d bet my life savings it was the same hippo, determined to have the final word.”

  • Ex-Girlfriend Target Gets NRA In Trouble

“The Ex”–a gun target made to look like a scantily-clad woman that “bleeds” when shot–has many people outraged after it debuted at an NRA convention over the weekend.

The target is made by Zombie Industries, the company that makes a “Tactical Bleeding Zombies” line, and many are questioning the wisdom of allowing men to shoot at something designed to replicate a specific type of person.

“This is outrageous and dangerous,” Laura Cutilletta, a senior staff attorney at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, said. “Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the United States. This reprehensible product stokes the fire of relationship violence which already claims far too many of our mothers, daughters and sisters.”

The company insists they never meant any harm with the target and have changed the name of the product to “Alexa Zombie”.

“The intention of the company was never to discriminate against women or promote violence against women,” said marketing director Roger Davis.

The convention was rife with controversy not just because of the targets, but also because of a comment Glenn Beck made comparing NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg to a Nazi.

  • Abenomics Bra Increases Bustline, Economy

Lingerie makers in Japan have come up with a clever marketing strategy to get the word out about what Prime Minister Shinzo Abe calls “Abenomics”: put pretty women in sexy padded bras and compare it to inflating the economy.

Abe, whose primary objective is to stimulate percent inflation in his country’s struggling economy, has got several companies backing him, including lingerie house Triumph. Their bras are insanely popular in Japan and have a loyal following after concepts like “solar-powered” and “husband hunting” hit the markets. Their latest creation, the “Abenomics” model, won’t be for sale, but rather strictly used to promote for the brand.

“To link in with ‘Abenomics’ and its three arrows of growth economic strategy, we decided to create something aimed at women. So with that in mind, we came up with the ‘Branomics Bra’,” Triumph spokeswoman Yoshiko Masuda said. “We’ve put in these pads that boost the bra’s cups by 2 percent. We hope that as the Japanese economy grows, we can also help bust sizes to get bigger.”

  • Cruise Ship Overboard: Search For Couple Ongoing

A cruise ship on its way to Australia is now the subject of a frantic investigation as the search continues for a couple who went missing overnight.

The Carnival Spirit had just reached the end of a 10-day trip and had docked at Sydney’s Circular Quay when it was discovered that a couple weren’t on board. A check of surveillance cameras showed that the Australian couple went overboard on Wednesday night, about 65 miles off the coast of Forster. Authorities are now trying to determine whether the man and woman fell or if they jumped, and an exhaustive search of the waters is underway.

“This is a tragic event at the moment, but we’re holding out hope we might be able to find these people alive,” said New South Wales Police Superintendent Mark Hutchings.

A spokesman for the cruise line said immediate action was taken once the couple was discovered missing; they were traveling with seven other people in their party.

“The guests in question were traveling with family and friends, and initial reports indicate that the couple was last seen onboard the vessel last night,” Peter Taylor said in a statement. “The ship immediately initiated standard missing person procedures, including a full search of the vessel, as per protocol,” he said.

This is the latest in a string of bizarre news stories involving Carnival cruise ships; earlier this year, thousands of passengers endured a long week aboard a vessel that broke down after a fire and had to be towed to port; last month, the same ship had to be evacuated after two fuel barges exploded nearby.

  • Biggest Loser Divorce Comes Before Baby

“The Biggest Loser” has gained so much popularity over the years because the competitors are so relatable; we all want to see them do well because we care about them. Unfortunately, fans are about to get some disheartening news about two recent stars of the show.

Sam Poueu and Stephanie Anderson, who met while filming season nine and married last May, have announced they are ending their marriage. The news comes a shock for fans, as Stephanie is seven months pregnant.

“It is with great sadness that my marriage to Sam Poueu is ending,” Anderson said in a statement. “Thank you in advance for respecting our privacy during this difficult time.”

The couple endured a major hardship when Poueu took a terrifying 54-foot fall and was severely injured; Anderson helped nurse him back to health, which made him see that she would be a wonderful wife and mom.

“Just from the experience of her being my caretaker post-accident, it was a dead giveaway that she’d be a fantastic mother,” he said. “That was an early sign for me that our child is going to have the best mother ever.”

The couple have not given a reason for the split, and there are no details at this time as to custody plans once Anderson has the baby.

  • 911 Operator Criticized For Rudeness Towards Amanda Berry

The 911 operator who took the call from kidnap victim Amanda Berry has come under fire and is reportedly being investigated by her superiors after the recording was released this week.

Berry, who went missing at age 14 in 2003, has been held captive with two other women for ten years in a Cleveland home by Ariel Castro, who allegedly kept them as his sex slaves. She gave birth to a daughter during that time, and investigators are doing tests to determine who the girl’s father is (Castro’s two brothers are alleged accomplices). With the help of a neighbor who heard her cries for help, Berry was able to escape to a nearby home and call police while Castro was out of the house.

After Berry screams her name and says she needs help because she’s just escaped, the dispatch operator can be heard telling Berry to “talk to police when they get there” and says that a car will be sent as soon as it’s available. And though 911 operators are expected to say calm in any situation, many think this woman didn’t show any compassion to a woman who was frantic to get help before her captor came back.

Berry, her daughter, and the two other women have been examined by doctors and are reportedly in good condition, although there were allegedly repeated pregnancies and miscarriages between the three adults over the years as they suffered the abuse of Castro and his brothers.

  • Nancy Grace: Parking Lot Interview Gets Weird

Nancy Grace has almost as many detractors as she does loyal followers, so it’s no surprise that after an odd interview popped up on CNN between her and Ashleigh Banfield, screenshots began making their way around the web faster than you can say, “When I was a prosecuting attorney”.

Grace has been in Arizona to cover every moment of the Jodi Arias trial, but found herself at a disadvantage when news broke earlier this week that three kidnapped women had escaped their tormentor in Cleveland, Ohio. Unable to get to the scene, Grace had to rely on CNN to patch her through to Banfield so she could get caught up via a split-screen interview. The thing is, Banfield was in Arizona, too. In the same parking lot.

Video of the interview shows the same cars rolling by in the background of both women, just a few seconds apart. Apparently, they’re chillin’ in the same forty feet of space, but are squinting into the camera and holding the earpieces firmly in their ears as though they’re on opposite sides of the world. It should also be noted that Banfield held another split-screen interview with someone else who was in the same parking lot.

  • Jodi Arias Verdict In: Will She Get Death Penalty?

Jodi Arias, the young woman accused of murdering her boyfriend in a jealous rage in 2008, was read a verdict today deciding her fate: guilty of first degree murder, both felony and pre-meditated.

Arias initially told the jury that a masked intruder killed Travis Alexander, but during the course of her 18-day testimony, she changed her story to that of a battered woman who’d had enough. She admitted to killing Alexander, but says she did it in self defense after he tackled her in a violent rage. He was found about a week after he died with 30 stab wounds, a shot to the head, and his throat slit from ear to ear.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez has been asking the jury for a verdict of first degree murder, which would carry a possible death sentence for Arias.

“The state is asking that you return a verdict of guilty, a verdict of first degree murder, not just premeditated murder, but also felony murder, for no other reason than it’s your duty, and the facts and the law support it,” Martinez said in his closing arguments on Friday.

The members of the courtroom looked visibly tense today as the verdict was read. Arias appeared calm until the verdict came down, her chin trembling as her emotions took over.

The court will re-convene tomorrow for the next phase of the trial, in which she will learn what her sentence is.

  • Demi Lovato: Blonde Look Suits Her

Demi Lovato, whose hair has been several different colors in the past few years, has gone back to blonde after a brunette hiatus. A photo of her at an event for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration taken yesterday is sweeping the web, as the young “X Factor” judge looks to have a healthy glow about her.

Lovato was honored at the event for her work in raising awareness about mental health issues and spoke a bit about her darkest times, which came after a bout of depression led to an eating disorder and cutting.

“You’re constantly asking yourself, ‘What will happen if people know my diagnosis?” she explained. “For me, it was more complicated. ‘Would I lose my career, doing what I love?’ … I pretended for a long time to be OK so that I could continue to work. And that’s why I’m here today, to tell young people who are asking themselves those questions, uncertain of what lies ahead, that they are not alone.”

Lovato is also being praised by fans and critics alike for her new album, DEMI, and many say it has helped them through their own tough times.

Lovato seems to be loving her new look, although she says it’s gotten her into trouble already:

  • Jodi Arias Verdict To Be Announced This Afternoon

Jodi Arias, the young woman accused of murdering her boyfriend Travis Alexander, will hear the jury’s verdict today after a painful four months in trial.

Arias claimed a masked intruder murdered her love, but after prosecutors introduced incriminating evidence she eventually admitted she killed Alexander, but only in self-defense. Alexander was found in his shower with 30 stab wounds, a gunshot to the head, and a slit throat about a week after he was killed.

Prosecutors say she killed him not out of self-defense, but rather in a murderous rage after he denied her and began seeing other women. She says he tackled her after a day spent in bed, slamming her to the floor, and that she managed to escape his grip to hide in the closet. There, she found a gun and shot him. She claims to have no memory of stabbing him, however. Arias says she moved the body and hid the gun because she was afraid her story wouldn’t be believed.

With such shaky testimony, it’s hard to say what the outcome of the trial will be. There were no witnesses and so far it has only been Jodi’s word against a dead man. Arias has, throughout the trial, painted a picture of herself as a woman deeply in love, who had sensual phone conversations with Alexander and wrote him poetry.

It looks like Arias will do jail time no matter what the jury has decided; if she’s found guilty of first degree murder, she will either receive life in prison or the death penalty. If the jury believes it wasn’t pre-meditated, she could get 10-21 years.

  • Kardashian Bikini Bump: That Baby’s On Vacation, Too

Kim Kardashian recently joined her family in Greece on an early-summer holiday, and she wasn’t afraid to flaunt that baby belly.

Wearing a daring string bikini, the mom-to-be had some fun in the sun with her mom and sisters, although we’re guessing she passed on the jet-ski rides.

“She’s loving the seventh month,” a source told Us Magazine of the pregnant reality star. “And she thinks pregnancy is so cute.”

Kim recently spoke about the effects her pregnancy has had on the media, saying they often print nasty things about her weight.

“There are maybe two or three covers just this week that say I am 200 pounds,” she said. “I’m like, ‘You are 60 pounds off here.’… It wouldn’t even bother me if I gained all the weight. And I have the biggest sweet tooth and I love junk food. Being pregnant, I don’t like any of it.”

Kim is reportedly due to give birth in July.

  • White House “Racism” Story Exposes Cruelty To Muslim-Americans

The White House Correspondents Dinner is a big to-do every year, drawing in huge names from across the country in almost every field imaginable. When one has the opportunity to go, one goes. But Muslim-American physician Seema Jilani may not be going back next year after experiencing what she says was blatant racism.

Jilani attended the dinner as a guest of her husband, a journalist; as the spouse of the invited guest, Jilani wasn’t allowed to attend the actual dinner, but instead would be spending the evening in a designated cocktail area with others. Soon after they parted company, however, Jilani realized her husband had her keys. Upon realizing she couldn’t contact him on his phone, she approached a group of security officers and asked if she could go into the ballroom just to get her keys. That’s when the trouble started.

“They refused to let me through,” Jilani wrote. “For the next half hour, they watched as I frantically called my husband but was unable to reach him. Then something remarkable happened. I watched as they let countless other women through — all Caucasian — without even asking to see their tickets. I asked why they were allowing them to go freely when they had just told me that I needed a ticket. Their response? “Well, now we are checking tickets.” He rolled his eyes and let another woman through, this time actually checking her ticket. His smug tone, enveloped in condescension, taunted, “See? That’s what a ticket looks like.”

Upon pressing the security officers as to why they would let others in without a ticket, Jilani was threatened by the guards, who said they would escort her out. Outraged, Jilani wrote a seething editorial on Huffington Post, where she spoke about the injustice done to anyone with dark skin and a foreign name, now more than ever.

“I explained that I am a physician, that my husband is a noted journalist for a major American newspaper, and that our guest was an esteemed, Oscar-nominated director. They did not believe me. Never mind that the American flag flew proudly outside of our home for years, with my father taking it inside whenever it rained to protect it from damage. Never mind that I won “Most Patriotic” almost every July 4th growing up. Never mind that I have provided health care to some of America’s most underprivileged, even when they have refused to shake my hand because of my ethnicity,” she wrote.

As of now, the White House has had no response about the incident, though that is likely to change soon; Ms. Jilani’s story has gone viral.

  • Dr. Phil Sues Gawker Media Over Te’o Debacle

Dr. Phil, as we previously reported, is suing Gawker media for their release of footage from an interview with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man who fooled football star Manti Te’o into believing he was a woman for over a year. Now, we’re seeing verbiage from court documents leaked online which talk about the lawsuit.

The talk-show host says that Gawker-owned Deadspin was not within their rights when they published a clip of the interview which showed Tuiasosopo speaking in the voice he used to trick Te’o; Te’o claims he never knew he was speaking to a man and carried on a long-distance “relationship” with what he thought was a woman named Lennay Kekua. Tuiasosopo killed Kekua off by telling Te’o she had cancer. The exclusive interview Phil landed with Tuiasosopo was broken up into two parts; the first part ended in a “cliffhanger”, as he was supposed to speak for the first time on camera in Lennay’s voice. Phil says that because Deadspin published that footage before his viewers had a chance to see the episode, they messed with his ratings.

“Gawker deliberately set out to get ‘the jump’ on the rest of the country and ‘scoop’ Dr. Phil with his own content,” the lawsuit said. “They did not ask permission, they blatantly and knowingly infringed the copyright of the content owner and did so in a way that furthered their interest to the maximum and undercut the rightful owner of the protected material.”

Phil is suing for unspecified damages.

  • Anderson Cooper “Swatted”, No Suspects In Custody

Anderson Cooper has been the latest victim of “swatting”–an illegal prank in which someone makes a false 911 call and sends police to a random home–and investigators don’t have any leads.

The incident happened last month at Cooper’s Hamptons home, making it the first time the prank has been pulled outside of L.A. Last year, several celebrities were targeted, including the Kardashians, Chris Brown, and Ryan Seacrest. Luckily, the victims are rarely home when cops descend upon their property, but many agree that it’s just not funny anymore (if it ever was).

Because of the serious nature of the 911 calls, police are forced to use precious resources to respond, which means those officers are off the streets for nothing.

“When we do get these calls, we always take them very seriously,” Sergeant Moreno of the Beverly Hills police said. “We never assume that it’s another one of these swatting calls. We respond with every available resource that we have, including the fire department and paramedics on standby.”

Earlier this year, a 12-year old boy admitted to swatting Ashton Kutcher’s house; he’s now awaiting sentencing. Police say they don’t have a suspect in this case yet, however.

  • Giant Deadly Snail Found In Texas Garden

A giant, deadly snail was found in a Texas woman’s garden recently, and researchers are worried that a strain of meningitis will be spread if more of the creatures are discovered.

The snail in question was spotted by a woman in her Houston backyard; luckily, she didn’t touch it, but only snapped a picture of it to show wildlife officials. Now, researchers at Sam Houston State University are wondering how the giant African snail got there and if there are more wandering around. As of now, the original is out there somewhere, because it got away before it could be captured.

“Unfortunately, humans are picking the snails up,” said Dr. Autumn J. Smith-Herron, the director of the Institute for the Study of Invasive Species at Sam Houston State University. “They carry a parasitic disease that can cause a lot of harm to humans and sometimes even death.”

The species is the same one that invaded Florida recently and began destroying crops and even homes. Because they multiply faster than Gremlins–they can lay up to 1,200 eggs a year–it’s extremely difficult to get rid of them once they settle in. Reportedly, a boy brought three home from Hawaii to keep as pets in the ’60s and started an infestation of 18,000 that took nine years to battle.

Because their appearance is so out-of-the-ordinary, there’s a danger of children picking them up to play with them. Everyone is urged not to touch the snails and to tell their children to leave them alone should they spot one. If one is seen, contact the Institute for the Study of Invasive Species immediately.

  • Dennis Rodman Asks Bestie Kim Jong Un For A Solid

Dennis Rodman is trying to use his pull with new buddy Kim Jong Un to get a Korean-American man released from his sentence of hard labor in North Korea.

Rodman, who was recently introduced at a fundraiser as the U.S. Ambassador for North Korea, has called Jong-Un “awesome” and has made plans to return for a hang-out session with his new buddy in August. His new mission, according to Twitter, is to get the controversial leader to pardon Kenneth Bae, who was arrested in November for unspecified “hostile acts” against the state. Bae, who is from Washington state, allegedly entered the country under an assumed identity.

Some are saying that North Korea may be using Bae as an excuse to get the U.S. to negotiate regarding their nuclear arms program, and interestingly, Rodman commented on the leader’s reported tactics.

“I’m not a total idiot. I know what Kim Jong-un is threatening to do regarding his military muscle. I hope it doesn’t happen because America will take whatever actions to protect America and our allies,” he said.

  • Mr. Rogers Biopic Is In The Near Future

Mr. Rogers was so insanely influential to a generation of kids–and possibly their kids–that it’s hard to believe a biopic hasn’t already been done about him. But never fear, Neighborhood Kids: it’s coming.

Deadline reported that Treehouse Pictures has snatched up the spec script written by Alexis Jolly, whose credits include writing for the Ellen Degeneres Show. Looks like they’ll be casting to fill those iconic sneakers pretty soon.

“Fred Rogers was such an inspirational man for so many people,” said Justin Nappi of Treehouse. “His keen ability to find the good in anyone, or anything, will make for a truly inspiring cinematic experience. In literally shaping the world around him to fit into his own unique perspective, he created what is arguably the most influential American children’s television show of all time.”

So who’s going to play the soft-spoken icon? MSNBC has a poll going on with some of their favorites, which include “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons and “Mad Men” actor Vincent Kartheiser. Head on over and give them your vote.
