  • Jaguars New Logo: Part Of A Franchise Revamp

The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to ramp up their image in 2013 after seeing dismal turnouts to games last year and a loss in revenue, and they’re starting with the logo.

The old one looked…well, a bit sad. The jaguar looked tired and the colors seemed sort of washed out. Nothing about it said that the team was ready to take the field like a bunch of wild cats and destroy the competition; more like they were ready to come out, do a couple of slow turns in a circle, and then plop down for a nap.

The new logo is vibrant, fierce, and much more suited to a NFL team. It’s streamlined, it’s angry, and it’s ready to help propel the Jags into a better year. At least, that’s what team president Mark Lamping is hoping. He wants the logo, combined with an upgrade to EverBank Field that includes new stadium seats and giant scoreboards, to revamp their image and draw in fans. In 16 years, the team has fallen from number 2 in the league to number 29, which is unacceptable to Lamping.

“We need to fix this,” Lamping said. “If we do not, we threaten the financial stability of the franchise.”

The team’s leaders–Lamping and owner Shad Khan–say the logo is a big part of helping to recover their image and want it to convey that they are “proud, bold, and committed”.

  • USPS Cuts Saturdays To Save Money

The USPS has been the topic of much debate over the past couple of years as it reviews its options now that the digital world has seemingly rendered mail service near-obsolete. Many people still rely on the post office to deliver bills–especially those who don’t want to give out their banking information online–and package delivery is always a concern. The Postal Service has started a new service for packages recently that includes giving the customer the ability to pay for and print their own shipping labels at home, then scheduling a pick-up using one of the service’s flat-rate boxes; however, the USPS website hasn’t been updated since Christmas, so it’s hard to say if the offer was for the holidays only or if it’s something they will offer all year.

But the agency says they will continue to make packages a priority even as they prepare to announce the end of Saturday mail service, scheduled to begin this summer. Packages will still get delivered six days a week, even if regular mail is not. The USPS has been battling Congress for several years now in an effort to get the measure approved, and postmaster general Patrick R. Donahoe says they feel they have the people on their side.

“The Postal Service is advancing an important new approach to delivery that reflects the strong growth of our package business and responds to the financial realities resulting from America’s changing mailing habits,” Donahoe said in a statement. “We developed this approach by working with our customers to understand their delivery needs and by identifying creative ways to generate significant cost savings.”

After several U.S. towns began seeing their local post offices closed down due to budget concerns, many people seem to be in favor of eliminating Saturday delivery if it means less hassle for them in the long run. And, if approved, the measure would mean taking a price-hike on stamps out of the equation, an idea many were opposed to.

  • Tiffani Thiessen Surprised By Lemur, Mr. Belding

Tiffani Thiessen, who rose to fame in the ’80s as the hottest cheerleader ever, Kelly Kapowski, made an appearance on the “Today” show on Tuesday and got way more than she bargained for.

She may have been there to promote “White Collar”, but she ended up handling snakes–a Burmese python, in fact–and receiving some awkward affection from a lemur who thought her head looked like a nice place to perch. As if getting a lemur paw in the eyeball on live television wasn’t bad enough, she also had a very awkward encounter with one of her former co-stars, Dennis Haskins, who played Mr. Belding on “Saved By The Bell” and made a surprise visit to the show.

  • PETA Slams Beyonce For Super Bowl Outfit Choice

PETA says they think Beyonce missed the mark when it came time to choose what she would wear to her Super Bowl halftime performance over the weekend.

The animal-rights group was disappointed that Queen Bey went with leather and snakeskin and say maybe she should take a look at some of their videos next time she heads for the wildlife section of her closet.

“We would take a bet that if Beyoncé watched our video exposés…she’d probably not want to be seen again in anything made of snakes, lizards, rabbits, or other animals who died painfully,” a PETA spokesperson said. “Today’s fashions are trending toward humane vegan options, and Beyoncé’s Super Bowl outfit missed the mark on that score.”

Beyonce has had no comment yet, but she and PETA have had beef before over a mink coat she wore to the inauguration last month. Of course, this time is a little different, because her Super Bowl outfit was designed by none other than…herself. The sexy look is part of her fall 2013 collection, “Valkyrie’s Dominion”.

  • Chris Brown Lied? New Report Doubts Community Service Claims

Chris Brown, who is now famously back in a relationship with ex-girlfriend Rihanna after a violent altercation between them left her beaten and bloody in 2009, may not have actually completed his court-ordered community service after his arrest for the incident.

The District Attorney in L.A. has submitted legal documents claiming that Brown lied about the amount of hours he completed while working at Tappahannock Children’s Center in Virgina, also alleging that Brown was jetting around the world during some of the time he claimed he was serving at Tappahannock.

The police department in Richmond, Virginia have allegedly admitted that there was not always a member of the force supervising Brown during his scheduled work time and that on some occasions, there was no one supervising him at all. After the D.A. did some digging, he discovered that Brown couldn’t have been working on some of the reported dates, because he was performing at shows. He says that Brown’s documentation was “at best sloppy … and at worst fraudulent reporting.” Included in the documents filed is a request for Brown to be ordered to finish out his community service sentence.

  • Guard Pregnant By Cop Killer, Faces Jail Time

A guard who worked for the Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, was arrested this morning for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with an inmate while she was on duty. The woman, 29-year old Nancy Gonzalez, admitted to having a relationship with the inmate, a convicted murderer of two undercover police officers, and says she is 8 months pregnant with his child.

Gonzalez’s admission was reportedly recorded during a conversation she had with her boyfriend, who is currently residing in another prison.

“I took a chance because I was so vulnerable and wanted to be loved and now I am carrying his child,” said Gonzalez. “Why not give him a child as far as giving him some kind of hope.”

The inmate, Ronell Wilson, was originally sentenced to the death penalty for his crimes, but the decision was overturned after an appeal and he is awaiting a retrial. At least three other inmates witnessed the inappropriate conduct, one of whom has said that Gonzalez came to him for advice on how to handle things if she got caught, adding that she would get “15 years” if the relationship was found out.

Gonzalez is scheduled to be arraigned later today in a Brooklyn court.

  • Teen Gives Judge The Finger, Sentenced To Jail

An out-of-control teen has recently learned that life is not like an episode of “Maury”; when you act out, you don’t just get sent to an angry ex-Marine for tough love. You get fines, jail time, and internet immortality.

Penelope Soto learned the hard way that when you talk back to a judge, things go quickly downhill. After being arrested for drug possession in Miami, Soto appeared before Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat only to giggle, play with her hair, and roll her eyes at him. It may have been an attempt to disarm the judge with girly cuteness, but it failed miserably. After an initial bond set at $5,000, Soto gave a catty, “Adios” and walked away…only to be called back and have her bond upped to $10,000 for her contempt. Astounded, Soto asked if he was serious, and when he replied he was, she gave him an angry bird and told him to f*ck himself.

The punishment for her attitude? 30 days in jail.

  • Kristen Wiig Confirmed For “Anchorman 2″ Appearance

Kristen Wiig is one of the funniest ladies in the business right now, and after her collaboration with Will Ferrell for a Golden Globes presentation, it’s not difficult to see why he’d want her on board for the sequel to his hit, “Anchorman”. Wiig has been confirmed in a role which early reports say is the love interest of Brick Tamland, played by Steve Carell. I guess he doesn’t love Lamp after all.

The sequel will also bring back original funnymen Paul Rudd and David Koechner and Ron Burgundy’s ladylove, Christina Applegate. Will Ferrell announced the plans for the sequel last March on “Conan”, dressed in full Ron Burgundy costume, of course.

  • Walt Sweeney Dies: Former Charger Was 71

Walt Sweeney, a former offensive lineman for the San Diego Chargers, has died of pancreatic cancer. He was 71 years old.

Sweeney was known as a standout player in the ’60s and ’70s and had nine AFL All-Star Games and Pro Bowl Games to his credit. He spent a whopping eleven seasons with the Chargers and two with the Redskins, and played 181 consecutive games in his career.

But the talented athlete had a dark side to his life which was perhaps brought on by overdoing it on the field; in the mid-’90s, Sweeney claimed he was hooked on pain medication that the NFL forced upon him and sued. A judge ruled that he be paid $1.8 million, but the ruling was later overturned on appeal.

In the past few years, more and more people are taking a look at the practices of the NFL regarding how the players are treated for injuries, particularly wounds to the head. Last year, after Junior Seau died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, his brain was autopsied for injuries and it was discovered that he suffered from something called CTE, which is caused by multiple blows to the head. CTE causes dementia and depression, which his family believes led to his suicide. They are currently involved in a lawsuit with the NFL.

  • Face Tattoo After First Date: Girl Has BF’s Name Inked

Face tattoos are not as common in some parts of the world as others, but it’s probably safe to say that no matter where you live, you’re going to get a few stares when you walk down the street if you have giant letters inked on your cheeks.

But one Russian girl didn’t care about any potential repercussions when she did just that and allowed her boyfriend of one day to tattoo her face with his name. Lesya Toumaniantz says it’s a show of devotion and, even though they had only just met in person, they’d been involved online for a while.

“It’s a symbol of our eternal devotion. I’d like him to tattoo every inch of my body,” she said.

Rouslan Toumaniantz, her beau, is an experienced tattoo artist and dealt with some controversy a few years back when a female client claimed he botched her ink, giving her way more stars than she’d asked for. She later recanted her story and said she’d lied because her family was upset over the tattoo.

The couple have reportedly made their love official by getting married; Lesya has already changed her last name. And while some think she’s made a huge, painful mistake, a friend says she was only doing what felt right.

“I know that there are people who are terrified that Lesya has made a rash decision that she’ll regret horribly, but sometimes the best decisions are the ones you make in an instant with your heart rather than the ones long-debated in your mind,” the friend says.

  • Couple Wins Lottery Twice In Two Days

An Arkansas couple were hoping for nothing more than a relaxing weekend on the lake recently when they got much more than they bargained for: two big lottery wins in just two days.

Stephen and Terri Weaver were on their way to a cabin on Greers Ferry Lake when they stopped at a convenience store to grab a few lotto tickets. Stephen bought five $1 Million Riches scratch-offs, and Terri bought four.

“We pick up a couple tickets on the weekend when we go to our cabin on the river,” said Terri. “It’s a weekly thing. We just pick up a few here and a few there.”

This time was different, however, as when they got to the cabin and scratched off the tickets, they saw that one of Stephen’s was a winner.

The couple celebrated (after Stephen recovered from what he thought was a heart attack) and decided to stay the weekend at the cabin as they had planned, and on the way home on Sunday, stopped and bought a few more tickets just for fun. Incredibly, Terri landed a $50,000 winner after an investment of just ten dollars.

“When she handed it to me, I fell back in my chair and almost went into cardiac arrest again,” Stephen said of the second ticket. We jumped around, hollered, and screamed. It’s just not possible that it happened twice. The odds must be astronomical.”

The couple will start a nice nest egg with the money but say they will both keep their jobs for now. Last year around this time, the entire nation (and beyond) was captivated by Mega Millions, which reached an insane amount for the jackpot a few times after no winners claimed the winning numbers.

  • Joe Paterno’s Widow To Sit Down With Katie Couric

Joe Paterno’s widow, Sue, has largely kept out of the public eye since the Penn State scandal–and subsequent arrest/conviction of Jerry Sandusky–last year. But that’s all set to change; the woman who was married to the now-disgraced football coach for fifty years has agreed to an in-depth interview with Katie Couric.

Paterno was largely viewed for years as an icon at the university and proudly carried the title of one of the nation’s winningest football coaches. But when an investigation was launched against the school after allegations of child sex abuse, Paterno was eventually fired on the grounds that he stood idly by as the abuse took place. He died just two months later, and the man accused of the crimes, Jerry Sandusky, would be a free man for several more months before a jury found him guilty of 45 counts of sexual abuse against ten boys.

While Paterno may not have harmed the children himself, many claims were made that he was told about the abuse after an employee of the college saw Sandusky touching a boy in the shower and didn’t do enough to stop it. His widow and family have protested that Paterno did everything that was expected of him in that situation and still maintain his innocence, but after Sandusky was found guilty, the former coach was stripped of 111 of the team’s wins and a statue in his likeness was taken down from the grounds of Penn State.

The interview will premiere on “Katie” on February 11th.

  • Reg Presley Dies: “Wild Thing” Singer Was 71

Reg Presley, frontman for the British band The Troggs, has died of complications from lung cancer. He was 71.

Presley enjoyed decades of success with his band–whose hits included “Wild Thing” and “Love Is All Around”–and helped inspire the early days of garage and punk rock. However, in his last years Presley fell into ill health and suffered several strokes. He retired last year after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He sent out a statement for the band’s fans around that time, explaining what had happened.

“As you all know I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad. However I’ve had to call time on The Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years.”

The Troggs made an announcement on their official website concerning his death on Monday:

This is the hardest statement I have ever written. I am heartbroken to announce that Reg Presley passed away this morning 4th February 2013. He died peacefully at his Andover home and was surrounded by all of his family. They are all absolutely devastated and there will be a huge gap in their family life. My husband Liam and myself would like to offer our sincere and deepest condolences to Brenda, Karen and Jason and their families. Reg will never be forgotten and we are proud to have known him.

  • Katie Holmes: Dating Might Have To Wait

Katie Holmes was one half of one of the most famous couples in the world until about seven months ago, and that just hasn’t been long enough to make her feel comfortable about dating again.

Although many would like to see America’s Sweetheart find love–real love this time, not the creepy, controlling kind she had with Tom Cruise–a friend says she’s cautious about jumping into something so quickly, especially now that she’s had a taste of freedom.

“Katie’s in a dilemma, because she wants to date but is concerned where it could lead to from there,” the source said. “She’s worried that if she commits herself fully to another man, she will have to give up the freedom she’s enjoying so much at the moment. As a single woman, she has no one controlling her nowadays, telling her what to do or who to see and she absolutely loves it!”

But being without a mate can get lonely, and it’s unlikely she’ll shun love for long.

“At the same time, she also misses being with someone special to share experiences with and she doesn’t want to be alone for the rest of her life,” the source told RadarOnline.

The actress has been keeping busy, however, and is finding success since she’s been on her own; first with her clothing line, Holmes & Yang–which showed at New York Fashion Week–and then on Broadway, in a production of “Dead Accounts”. For now, at least, it seems she just doesn’t have time to date.

  • Kevin Bacon On Subway Rides: Why He Really Does It

Kevin Bacon has got to be one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, due in part to his long career–which began in 1978 with “Animal House”–and the sometimes small but memorable roles he’s taken in unexpected films and shows. Plus, he has that whole Six Degrees game named after him.

But Bacon–who is set to have a big year after taking mostly smaller parts since 2011–says that although fame can be a double-edged sword, he does still get a thrill when he’s recognized. In fact, it’s one of the reasons he still takes public transportation.

The 54-year old actor and musician admitted recently that he had a disguise made up in order to be able to go out in public without being harassed by photographers, but it didn’t turn out the way he expected it to.

“I had a prosthetic disguise made, because I wanted to see what it would be like not to be recognized. I didn’t like it very much – no one was nice to me. People didn’t bother me, but they also looked right through me,” he said.

Of course, the train is the fastest way to get around New York, so we can’t fault him there.

Bacon’s new hit show, “The Following”, airs on Fox and is getting good reviews so far. The story follows a disgraced FBI agent on a strange and bloody journey orchestrated by a serial killer and his groupies.

  • Alabama Hostage Standoff Over, Gunman Reported Dead

The hostage standoff in Alabama involving a five-year old boy and an unstable man is reportedly over.

Few details are emerging at this time, but early reports say that Jimmy Lee Dykes, the 65-year old veteran who boarded a school bus last week, shot the driver to death, and kidnapped a five-year old boy is dead. The boy, named only in news reports as Ethan because of his age, is reported to be safe.

Dykes took Ethan to an underground bunker at his home, where the two have been for the past week. Police and FBI said they were being cautious about revealing too much to the public, but did say Dykes seemed to want his story to be heard. Ethan’s family have been waiting with bated breath the past week, praying for his safe release and communicating with both captor and captive through a ventilation duct. They also provided special requests for the boy along with his medication; he’s reported to be living with autism and ADHD.

This is a breaking and developing story; we will keep you updated as details emerge.

  • Child Hostage In Alabama: Tense Situation Enters 7th Day

The man who boarded an Alabama school bus last week, fatally shot the driver and took off with a five-year old boy doesn’t seem any closer to relinquishing his hostage even as the situation enters a seventh day.

65-year old Jimmy Lee Dykes took the boy, Ethan, to an underground bunker at his home and has kept him inside ever since as tensions mount outside. Dykes, who is described by neighbors as a menace who has threatened them with guns and once beat a dog to death with a pipe, has allowed police and the boy’s parents to deliver the child food and medication through a ventilation duct, but he’s not giving negotiators much to go on as far as what his demands are. Police have said that he seems to have a story he wants to tell, and have indicated they might let him talk to a reporter.

As of right now, the main concern is that Ethan, who is autistic and suffers from ADHD, will have what his parents call an “uncontrollable episode” during his stay in the 8′x6′ bunker that will set his captor off. They are hoping his medication will curb any such episode.

Despite Dykes’ violent tendencies, he has indicated to police that he is taking care of Ethan and has supplied him with food and electric blankets to stay warm. The local sheriff thanked Dykes for his concern.

The slain bus driver, Charles Poland, was laid to rest on Sunday and is being hailed as a hero for standing up to Dykes when he boarded the bus and demanded a child.

  • Cult Musician Dying, Says Worries Are Gone

Wilko Johnson announced recently that he’s suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer…but the word “suffering” doesn’t exactly seem to apply here.

Johnson, whose early days in the music business were formed by the British band Dr. Feelgood, decided he wasn’t going to let the illness keep him from the stage he loves. Since making the announcement, Johnson has continued to tour (to sold-out shows) and exhibits a frenetic energy while playing, keeping audiences in awe. But Johnson says he’s not trying to prove anything; rather, the things that mattered so much before just don’t have the same power.

“It makes you feel so alive,” Johnson said of learning he had less than a year to live. “Just walking down the street, man, everything looks really intense. Any little thing you look at, it almost gives you a kind of childlike consciousness. I’m a miserable so-and-so. I suffer from depression and everything … but all that stuff whatever it was I used to worry about – it doesn’t matter. What’s gone, what is and what will be, do not matter.”

If anything, the musician’s diagnosis has given him a fresh perspective, as well as a fresh bout of creativity. Johnson says he’s been writing songs again and is looking forward to recording them in what may be his last band session.

‘‘I think there will be an album. It’s going to be rough and ready, because we’ve got about three or four days and we’re just going to go in and to bash it down. We’re not going to twiddle with anything,” he said.

Johnson, who is also an actor and has appeared on the enormously popular series “Game Of Thrones”, is determined not to go down without a fight, and his fans love him all the more for it.

  • Black Dahlia Case: New Forensic Evidence Found?

The Black Dahlia Case–in which a woman’s horribly mutilated, bisected body was found in an L.A. park in 1947–has held the fascination of many over the decades. The mysterious woman who dreamed of being an actress suddenly went from being another pretty face in the crowd to the girl everyone knew. According to various reports, she was both morally loose and virginal; a bad girl and the girl who stayed in every night practicing her craft; a young woman who was ruthlessly pursuing stardom and a girl who seemed lost and swallowed up by the city. She became everything in the eyes of the media, and because no one seemed to know much about her or where she came from, the public and the press were essentially free to make their own assumptions.

But what made the murder so sensational was that her killer was never caught, sending the young women of L.A. into a panic as stories of a serial killer began to circulate. The fact that there was no blood found in the field which held her sad remains meant the killer did the job somewhere else and then dumped her, a bold move even in the days before surveillance cameras were mounted on every corner. Surely a witness must have seen or heard something?

There would be many conflicting stories flooding the L.A.P.D. in the days and weeks following the grisly discovery, and even several notes sent in claiming to be written by the murderer. He seemed to be taunting them, and certainly, a person capable of cutting a woman in half was most likely not new to the game. Everyone feared the death of Elizabeth Short would not be the last made at his hands.

But as the sensationalism of the story began to fade over time, one man says his suspicions that his own father was behind the murder began to grow. Steve Hodel, a former L.A.P.D. detective, says that after digging up some of the old records on the case, he discovered what his gut had known all along: his father, George Hodel–a physician–was at one time a suspect in Short’s murder. Hodel’s research included teaming up with a retired police officer, Sgt. Paul Dostie, and a cadaver-sniffing dog named Buster. Together, they say they found evidence in George Hodel’s former home–a mansion–of human decomposition.

“Buster immediately took off … and ran to a vent located at the southwest corner of the property where he alerted, indicating he had picked up the scent of human decomposition,” Hodel said.

Samples of the soil have been sent to a lab for analysis, and while it’s too early to hold out hope that anything definitive will come of the tests, Hodel says that he’s sure the mystery has been solved. At the very least, he and Dostie have discovered that something bad happened in that house.

“We have established as fact that the basement, some 66 years after the murder, still holds the smell of death,” Hodel said.

  • Timberlake: Spears Insult Gets Backlash On Twitter

Timberlake/Spears isn’t a combination you hear much anymore. Since breaking up in 2002, the former dynamic duo strive to stay out of one another’s way and rarely speak about their relationship. But Justin has reportedly been talking about his ex, most notably at a Super Bowl party over the weekend, and Twitter isn’t happy about it.

The “Suit And Tie” singer–who just dropped his first full album of new material since Future Sex Love Sounds in 2006–is rumored to have made a less-than-savory comment about Spears right before launching into the song that was famously penned about her being unfaithful (the video featured a Britney look-alike), “Cry Me A River”.

“Sometimes in life, you think you found the one. But then one day you find out, that she is just some bitch!” he said.

Justin has said that he wasn’t talking about Britney when he made the remarks, but…shamon, man. Give us a little credit.
