  • Scrabble Rules Change Allowing Proper Nouns For First Time In 62 Years

Mattel is changing the rules of its classic board game Scrabble for the first time in 62 years. Highly-literate wordsmiths will now be permitted to use proper nouns, an act that has been prohibited for “Scrabblers” ever since the game was trademarked by creator Alfred Butts in 1948.

New high scoring combinations will include Jay-Z (23 points), Lexulous (15 points), Xerxes (20 points) and Kyrgyzstan (29 points). Players can also score mega-points by using popular words like Beyonce, Pepsi, Jordin Sparks, and Shakira. Mattel is even considering allowing players to spell words backwards and upwards on the board and place words unconnected to other pieces.

The new rules would be a “great new twist” on the classic game, a spokeswoman for the toy manufacturer said Monday.

“The layout, the colors of the board, the rules and the game itself have all remained unchanged for more than 60 years. These changes are the biggest news for Scrabble lovers in the history of the game and will provide a great new twist on the old formula. We believe that people who are already fans will enjoy the changes but some people will want to continue playing the old way so we will still be selling a board with the original rules.”

Mattel will unveil a new version of the game with the amended rules in July.

Do we have any Scrabble fans out there? What do you think about the new proper noun clause? The Brainiacs will not be pleased….I can totally see this game taking a nosedive in popularity now.

  • “Bosom Buddies” Tom Hanks & Peter Scolari To Be Honored At 2010 TV Land Awards

Tom Hanks is reuniting with his Bosom Buddies co-star Peter Scolari to accept a special prize for the hit cross-dressing sitcom at the 2010 TV Land Awards.

The ABC sitcom centered around two bachelors, Kip and Henry, who move into a hotel for women after their apartment is condemned. The pair of advertising designers must live as Buffy and Hildegarde in wigs and heels in order to keep a roof over their heads. The actors kickstarted their careers on the ’80s series, now they’re set to join former co-stars Donna Dixon, Telma Hopkins, and Holland Taylor 30 years later to accept TV Land’s coveted Anniversary Award.

“Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks and Emmy Award-nominee Peter Scolari are among the newest honorees at the 8th Annual TV Land Awards. The network will salute the ground-breaking sitcom Bosom Buddies with the Anniversary Award at this year’s show, which will be hosted by Tim Allen,” the network announced in a press release on Monday. “Previous honorees for this award have included Knot’s Landing, Batman, and Roots.”

The ceremony will mark the first time the cast has been seen together publicly since the show ended. Dynasty and Charlie’s Angels star John Forsythe, who died of complications from pneumonia on Thursday, will also be honored during the show’s April 17 taping.

The 8th TV Lands Awards will air April 25.

  • Rihanna Abhors Music Video Product Placement

Listen up, music stars: Rihanna has something to say about singers who agree to lucrative cash bonuses for littering their music videos with product placement. Just last week, handlers for former Destiny’s Child star Kelly Rowland sent out a mass email seeking commercial sponsors to pay to have their products strategically placed in the star’s forthcoming comeback vid. Rihanna, on the other hand, loathes artists who sell out to be “commercial.”

“I don’t like things to be so commercial. I hate product placement in my videos. Videos should just tell the story of the song. With product placement it becomes this big ad campaign. I just don’t like that. Sometimes we have to, for whatever polit-ical reason, but it’s never my first choice,” says Rihanna, who launched her fourth album Rated R with help from communication giant Nokia.

Guess we know what she thought of the “Telephone” video!

  • Sean Penn Sued For Attacking Paparazzo

Sean Penn has been sued over his violent clash with a photograper last October. The Oscar winner is facing a lawsuit from the snapper who alleges he suffered serious injuries when Penn kicked and threatened to kill him in a bust-up last fall.

The actor has already been charged with two misdemeanour counts of criminal battery and vandalism after reportedly attacking paparazzo Jordan Dawes and damaging his camera, but Dawes claims being “kicked and punched” by the Milk actor has left him in need of surgery on his knee.

According to legal papers filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court this week, Dawes accuses Penn of breaking his camera before threatening his life, vowing: “The next time I see you, you will be in a box.”

Dawes is seeking an unspecified sum in monetary compensation for the alleged attack. The criminal case against the star is still pending.

  • Whitney Houston Respiratory Infection Interrupts European Tour

Whitney Houston has postponed a concert in Paris after falling ill.

The legendary singer had been due to perform in the City of Lights this week, but a statement released by her representative says an upper respiratory infection has forced Whitney to bow out of that show on doctors’ orders.

Concert organizers say the 46-year-old singer had been excited about opening her European tour at Paris’ Omnisport Bercy on Tuesday night and regretted having to postpone the show. The illness will delay the European leg of a world tour that has been rocked by fan criticism in Asia and Australia.

“Whitney is suffering from an upper respiratory infection and after a consultation with her doctors has been advised to postpone her performance,” said a statement from the concert’s organizers. “Whitney and her band apologize that the show has to be rescheduled on such short notice.”

Whitney’s “Nothing But Love Tour” will resume as scheduled in Manchester, Britain, on April 8 and a new date for Paris will be announced shortly.

The film — based on the bestsellling novel by Stieg Larsson — follows an unconventional heroine who helps a journalist track down a missing woman. The girls will go head-to-head for the coveted role, which is said to be “edgy, sexy and demanding.”

  • Nicollette Sheridan Marc Cherry $20 Million Lawsuit Alleges Assault & Wrongful Termination

Who knew the drama unfolding on the set of Desperate Housewives was even saucier than some of the strange happenings that frequently take up residence on Wisteria Lane? Actress Nicollette Sheridan is suing the creator of the Emmy Award-winning primetime soap for more than $20 million over allegations of assault, battery, violence and wrongful termination, TMZ reported Monday.

Nicollette is steaming over an event first reported by The National Enquirer nearly two years ago.

Sheridan, who played Edie Britt on the comedy-drama, claims show creator Marc Cherry hit her across the face and head, and then fired her after she complained about the assault, legal documents reveals.

According to Enquirer spies, Marc got into a furious screaming match with Nicollette over a dialogue change he had made in the actress’ script in the fall of 2008.

“Everyone was very uncomfortable,” an on set source told the tab in October of that year. “People were trying to act as though they weren’t paying attention, but when Cherry blasted her for having an opinion…it got hard to ignore the fight.”

“He totally lost it and swung for her head,” the spy insisted at the time.

Although reps for the show have long denied spywitness accounts claiming Sheridan had been “smacked or slapped” by Cherry, Nicollette finally spilled the tea on the fateful encounter in court papers filed in Los Angeles Monday.

The 46-year-old British-born star claims Cherry created a hostile work environment by “behaving in an extremely abusive and aggressive manner toward the individuals who work on the show.”

And if that weren’t enough, she confirms that Cherry physically assaulted her after she questioned him about a script during filming of the show’s fifth season on Sept. 24, 2008. “Cherry took her aside and forcefully hit her with his hand across her face and head,” according to the lawsuit.

After the alleged incident Cherry went to her trailer to ask for forgiveness. Nicollette says she immediately reported the incident to ABC but the network failed to take action. Cherry’s aggressiveness escalated and she was unceremoniously booted from the show in early 2009.

The lawsuit also alleged that when Cherry found out Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher went above his head to complain about him, he retorted: “I hope Teri Hatcher gets hit by a car and dies.”
