  • Michael Lambert?? How’s your daughter?

Since I have been vising this forum I do not remember a day you haven’t posted at least once or twice.

I was following the thread about your little daughter being ill. Then you had a rough night and a big presentation to get through at work the next morning.

I’m worried about you. Are you OK. How is your daughter?

Hope to see you posting tomorrow.

  • Anyone made Soy Milk at home?

I bought a small bag of Soy Flour and there is a recipe on the back to make Soy Milk.

Has anyone done this? Is it worth the trouble? Is there something that I should be warned about? Like, does it foam all over the stove or anything like that?

I am on a quest to make a low carb shake for my husband as a treat.

    Thanks,
    Janice

  • how can we find out if Hubby is getting too much insulin?

    Hello Folks,

The last time we saw the Dr. he told us that my husband should keep increasing his dosage until the Fasting #’s come down. He ended up with 42 units Lantus in the AM.

We feel that is a little high, since we just started following Dr. Bernstein’s excellent plan (as close as we can afford to, anyway).

Should we gradually drop down every 2-3 days, or what?

We had a meeting with the pharmacist team (I believe they are mostly in training and use us a Guinea pigs). When they read the profile sheet and saw 42 units a day, the leader told us we had found the ‘sweet spot.’ That sounded like a car salesman’s pitch and it has been rankling in our subconscious.

Now, reading Dr. Berstein’s book, he speaks of a dose of 27 units daily as ‘Massive.’ Says too much can cause insulin resistance.

We would appreciate advice from you folks. He gets his 1st 3 month A1c next Tues. and sees the Dr. the following week. We would like to be straightened out before we get there. He is a nice young man but he is only a Physicians Assistant and can not have too much experience. You folks have ‘been there, done that.’

    Regards,
    Janice & Husband

    P.S. Today was his lowest fasting # EVER = 87 😀

  • We are puzzled, let me explain. . .

    Hi,

Here is the puzzle. I imagine this in a Table Format, if you can.

    Fasting BG :
    Jan 15 107 ———————- Jan 20 126

    insulin dose :
    20 units ——————- 36 units

    Breakfast :
    3 eggs scrambled w/heaping ———————- 2 eggs plain, coffee w/heavy cream only
    tbsp wheat bran
    coffee w/3 tsp sugar

    2 hour BG :
    108 ———————————– 136
    ———————————

Could it be that adding bran made that difference?

(Sure hope the format I made for this post works, other wise it may look jumbled)

    Janice & Husband

(we had come to believe we had jumped the insulin dose so high too quickly, not allowing the diet changes to work, etc. Now, we can not get back on track – both very frustrated)

  • I can’t cook any more!! My cooking machine is broken!

It is coming up on the first 3 months since diagnoses and I am still getting failing grades on cooking meat.

All my life I have flowered and fried EVERYTHING. That or dump it in the crock pot – after browning it with flour.

We hate pork chops unless they are fried. We don’t like chicken anymore. The steak I cooked the other night had to be put in the pressure cooker for 20 min before we could bite it and then it was all stringy.

I need serious help. I have another steak (2 for one sale), is there something I can soak it in to soften it up? If not, I may just have to put it through the grinder and make hamburger out of it. 🙁

I have a stainless steel Wok that I have never used. Do you think it may be time to start learning how to use it? I saw it at a flea market for $5 and had to have it, since I knew those kind were expensive. Can’t pass up a bargain.

Snacks are easy, how hard is it to open an avocado and hand a man a spoon? 😀 Breakfast, scrambled eggs, no problem.
Get closer to dinner time and I start sweating, what kind of meat shall I ruin tonight? My poor husband, I feel so sorry for him. First he gets this disease/condition that requires him to give up most all the foods he loved, and now his wife, who he always bragged on her cooking, can’t cook any more. We have dinner and I promise him a tasty snack in 2 hours. That is just pathetic.

    Any advice?

Janice & her poor, pathetic, starving Husband

  • can anyone explain why the numbers are better?

My husband was diagnosed on 11-20-09. The Dr. gave him a Lantus pen and told him to do 10 units every morning. On the 2nd visit 11-30-09 the he was told to up the dose by 2 numbers for every day the BG was above 120.

No one discussed diet changes with us. I started searching for a better way to eat. I found this wonderful forum and we began Low Carbing. Still not getting the Fasting BG reading we were told to aim towards.

Long story short, we gradually upped the dose to 42 units a day. At a consultation with the pharmacist team we were told 42 seems to be a ‘sweet spot’ for him. That sounded like a Used Car Salesman line. Then Bountyman started his test to see how long he would last. We got to thinking that we upped to 42 before we had perfected the LowCarb eating. How could that be a ‘sweet spot’ when it is based on faulty data.

We dropped to 40, 38, 36, 30, 28 and today 20. For some odd reason, the numbers are better here. Morning 107, after breakfast 108, Lunch was 86 and we missed the 2 hour afterward, dinner was 98 and after 113.

He may try to go back to the original 10 units and see how things do. I kinda think we should stay at 20 for another day to let things normalize. What do you think?

    Appreciate any input,
Thanks for all the wonderful posts, links and information. We couldn’t have gotten where we are without you all.

  • A Dr.s compentance (a reflection)

Thankfully, my husband is now treating his diabetes. It was diagnosed in 2007 by the GP we went to for black out spells. The spells turned out to be a practically complete blockage of his left Carotid Artery. He was fast tracked to surgery and almost died in the recovery room.

Due to this we were a tad foggy and missed the diabetes diagnoses. My husband told his Doctor the Metformin made Chocolate taste bad. He prescribed another type pill. The bad taste continued, my husband stopped taking anything. Upon reflection, shouldn’t the Dr. have said, "What are you doing eating chocolate, anyway, you are a diabetic!!!" They never suggested a diet change.

He continued to see that Dr. with complaints of extreme pain and was given stronger and stronger doses of Hydrocodone (which did nothing to alleviate the problem). Finally he was referred to a Pain Management Doctor. She has simply continued the same pattern. Occasionally she asks about the diabetes diagnoses but does not pursue it to a conclusion and was easily satisfied with a brush off answer.

Just one day after beginning treatment for the D I asked her if lowering the BG would help with the pain, she said, "No!" Put him on Celebrex and Lyrica. Well, controlling the BG has given him his life back. But when we go back I know she will credit the Lyrica and Celebrex. What chance do we stand, it is all in God’s hands.

Anyone else experience this sort of thing?

New Years is a time of reflection at our house. How about any of you?

  • question about inslin

    Hi,

My husbands Dr told him to keep upping his insulin dose by 2 units for every day he was over a set amount. That is, we think that is what he said, we are getting fuzzy on the instructions.

Anyway, 3 days ago he had Fasting BG 108 took 40 units lantus. Ate low carb, just about the same thing each day and the next moring his Fasting BG was 118. We upped the dose to 42 and today he had Fasting BG of 129. Is there a direct correlation there? The more we increase the insulin, the hungrier he gets, the more he eats on into infinity.

We want to control this by diet.

We ate coffee w/heavy cream (before the insulin)
    8 AM insulin
9 AM 2 scrambled eggs with a 1/2 tablespoon of wheat bran
10:30 Hot water with lemon 1 cup
1:20 kidney beans and 3 ritz crackers
    3:20 checked BG – 144
2 Tablespoons of peanut butter (no sugar kind)
6:55 burger with 2 teaspoons ketchup & spinach
    9 PM checked BG 101
9:30 1 cup of chicken meat from a roasted chicken (It was from the deli and VERY salty)
10 PM 1/2 cup all bran with cream

We are working as hard as we can to bring the numbers down and it is frustrating.

Only change in the day’s activities is that we stayed home and did nothing.

    Regards,
    Janice

  • Sodium – contributes to poor bloood sugar control

Hubby is newly diagnosed with D. Lasw week we had a easier time keeping the fasting BG low. This week it has been much higher.

Out of the blue his brother-in-law called to chat (a once yearly thing) and in the course of the conversation he mentioned how salt effects blood sugar.

After the call I googled and found this interesting article. Hope it helps someone else.

Oh, the difference in last weeks readings and this?? The pot of beans I made this week has a big slice of ham. Last weeks had none. This week you do not even need to salt them to eat but hubby ALWAYS salts everything. My fault.

At least we know and can correct it. Big learning curve here.

Hypoglycemia / Low Blood Sugar: Nutritional causes, therapies, remedies & prevention

"While many practitioners recommend nearly identical dietary lifestyles for people suffering from low
blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or diabetes (hyperglycemia), Sodium management, and the presence of
adequate amounts of Fiber, are an important consideration to help improve sugar metabolism in both
    situations."

  • Sodium & artificial sweeteners linked to decline in kidney function

Found this today. We have already decided to do away with Splenda, low-carb yogurt and diet soda and just about anything that comes in a box or can. If we hadn’t already chosen to do so, this would have settled it.

Hope it helps someone save their kidneys. Diabetics have enough to worry about as it is, eh?

    Kind regards,
    Janice & Hubby

  • we Googled “aspertame makes you hungry”

Since beginning treatment for his Type 2 Diabetes, my husband and I have been drinking Diet Soda and other ‘sugar free’ sweet things (yogurt, pudding, etc). He kept complaining that it made him hungry. I thought he was nuts but when I Googled "aspartame makes you hungry" I had to apologize for thinking such a thing.

Below are a couple of links I posted from the 100’s of links that confirmed his claim.

    — Living Prepared —: Aspertame Makes You Hungry

"Aspartame contains an amino acid called phenylalanine, which causes insulin to be released, triggering hunger."

"From 1960 to l976, there was virtually no change in the number of Americans who were overweight: (about 24% of Americans). However, from the mid 80’s to present, this number has more than doubled to 54 percent! This coincides with the massive infusion of non-caloric chemical sweeteners and sugar-free "diet" foods that are eaten by close to three-quarters of the adult population."

    Aspartame Dangers | Joshua Seth

Speaking of Splenda, "It’s yet another example of the diet industry telling people that they can have something for nothing. You can NEVER (and I use that word very rarely, as Socrates cautions against it) never have something for nothing in this life. You’ll always pay some sort of a price for it."

    Hope this helps someone,

  • Goof grief, glutamates AND Aspartate

This weekend I picked up a book at a Flea Market, ‘The 7 Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery Plan.’

One chapter was discussing Carb Act-alikes and as I was telling my husband about it, we did a search on ‘glutamates.’ Found this link: All Glutamates Are Not Created Equal :: Environmental and Health Concerns :: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)

We are stunned after reading it. I encourage everyone to read it and please comment.

I just knew Diet SierraMist Cranberry was too good to be true. Oh, well. Guess we may start drinking water.

    Kind regards,
    Janice & spouse

  • what to feed a starving T2 husband late nite

My husband can go all day with hardly any carbs but come 10 PM and he turns into a bottomless pit. It used to be the lony thing that filled him and stopped the hunger was cereal & milk w/ splenda.

Now that he has begun treatment for his long standing T2 I have been learning all I can about care and feeding (he is learning along with me, too) but I somehow overlooked how tricky the packagers of commercial cereals can be.

    WheatChex:
    serving size 3/4 cup (47g)
    Carb 38g
    Fiber 5g
    Sugars 5g
    Protein 5g
    ———————————————–
So, thinking I might be choosing the lesser of two evils, I bought All-Bran Original
    serving size 1/2 (31g)
    Carb 23g
    fiber 10g
    sugars 6
    Protein 4g
    ———————————————–

Looking closer and taking some time to digest things, they would probably come out the same if I used the same serving size for comparison – EXCEPT for that 10g fiber.

Would that make it safer to eat?

What can he eat to stop the hungries?

    Dinner BG 132
    2hr later 161

Dinner was Great Northern beans and spinach, diet soda and 5 ritz crackers (10g carb).

He took 32 units Lantus this morning.
    Waking BG 129
2 hrs later 150 after 2 scrambled eggs with ham, green onion and a feather of cheese – o carbs

We have been at this since Nov 20th. Started at 10 units Lantus. His BG does best when we eat beans, can’t we just go with that? But not for late nite snack. Help, please.

    Kind regards,
    Janice
