    What you need to have:
    Cutting edge knowledge of video production and compression for web delivery
    Shooting still photos and video
    • Ability to use Adobe Premier/AVID/Final Cut and After Effects

    • Oh, and it would be great if you could bring your own equipment (we will provide very basic video software and hardware)

    The give and take:
    We will provide a creative, free-flowing, hands-off environment for you to produce awesome multimedia pieces all while being encouraged to do it differently and better. That being said, we are in the real world with real clients so you must be able to time manage, meet a deadline, stick to a schedule, handle feedback, and listen to the boss.

    Time Commitment:
    Flexible, but not too flexible. We can work within the parameters set up by your university and class load but we would need some idea of your weekly schedule so we can manage projects effectively.

    We fully expect the on-the-job experience and the skills you will walk away with to be compensation enough. (Oh yeah, the credit hours you will receive from your university are nice too).

  • Virginia Supportive Housing: Public Relations Internship

    Description of Organization

    Founded in 1988, Virginia Supportive Housing (VSH) transforms lives & communities by providing permanent solutions to homelessness. VSH is the only not-for-profit organization in Central Virginia that provides permanent rental housing integrated with appropriate levels of support services to very low-income homeless individuals and families and those with disabilities. 90% of the people the organization serves do not return to homelessness.

    General Intern Responsibilities:

    Newsletters:

    • Maintain distribution list for quarterly printed newsletter
    • Manage production calendar for printed newsletter (collect feature items, compose and edit content, determine priority & placement of items, collect accompanying photos, communicate with graphic design agency, circulate drafts, etc)

    Intern Qualifications

    • Senior preferred, but Juniors will also be considered

    *Some travel to VSH properties and programs in Richmond, Petersburg, and South Hampton Roads (with VSH or without staff) may be necessary. Mileage will be reimbursed.

    Additional Information:

    • This internship is available during both the spring & fall semesters as well as during the summer.
    • The minimum time commitment is 16-20 hours per week (4 hours per day x 4 or 5 days per week).
    • The maximum commitment is 40 hours per week (summer semester only).
    • This internship is an unpaid opportunity that meets all academic requirements for the MASC 493 Fieldwork Internship.

    Main Line Broadcasting is currently offering internship for our 3 radio stations: 98.9 Liberty, 93.1 The Wolf, and 107.3 BBT.

    Internship would involve working with the entire operation from the front desk to sales to promotions to programming for school credit.

    Production:
    • The Intern will spend time in the Production Dept. with the Production Director learning how commercials are written, produced, and dubbed to carts, how on-air promos are produced, and how the production director keeps track of all incoming production to get on air.

    Programming:
    • Spend time with Program Director to learn why the stations are programmed they are-from personalities to music to target demographics to format specifications, etc.
    • Spend time in the on-air studio to observe some of the different day-part shifts including handling incoming calls from listeners, working the on-air board, insert traffic breaks and how personalities/disc jockeys handle their shift.

    Promotions:
    • Spend time with the Promotion Director and Street Team Coordinator and assist on personal appearances, station promotions, and other promotional events. The intern would also be involved in all station promotion meetings, as well as outside promotion meetings with clients, organizations, etc.

    Sales, Traffic, General/Administrative:
    • Spend time with different individuals from the sales department and understand how sales work, what accounts the different stations go after, how commercial spots are handled from client to rep to production, how the traffic department handles station logs, work the front desk and meet with our listeners, etc.

  • Venture Richmond Advertising Internship

    Venture Richmond Advertising Internship

    Venture Richmond engages business and community leaders in partnering with the City to enhance the vitality of the community, particularly Downtown, through economic development, marketing, promotion, advocacy and events. Our focus as a public private partner is to support the strategic direction of the City of Richmond while providing enhanced services downtown including sidewalk cleaning and safety Ambassadors.

    Venture Richmond is responsible for managing the Canal Walk and Brown’s Island under a lease agreement with the City, including operation of canal boats as well as landscaping and beautification of the area. In addition, Venture Richmond produces festivals and events in downtown Richmond such as Easter on Parade, Friday Cheers, the 2nd Street Festival, the Richmond Folk Festival and Celebrate Illuminate.

    Intern Responsibilities

    The intern will gain practical experience in creative and strategic advertising on a professional level during their 15-week spring semester while working with Venture Richmond. Their supervisor will provide them with duties that include, but are not limited to:

    • Creation and management of the canal cruise mailing list prior to distribution
    • Assist with the distribution of marketing materials for both canal cruises and river district
    • Assist with online marketing, i.e. Twitter, Facebook, e-newsletters, etc.
    • Online management of downtown events on regional and statewide calendars
    • Distribution of marketing materials throughout Downtown Richmond and via Virginia tourism distribution networks
    • On-site assistance with event related activities when needed
    • General office and project support for the marketing and events departments

    **RichmondBizSense.com is offering a print journalism reporting internship for the Spring semester.

    **Richmond BizSense is an online business journal delivering daily news stories about Richmond area companies, commercial real estate, banking, startups, and the economy. RBS is an independently-owned media company.

    Interns will be expected to write at least three original news stories each week. They will cover assigned stories and beats as well as pitch their own story ideas. Interns will also complete small research assignments for staff reporters.

    Interns must be in their senior or junior year and planning to major in journalism. An interest in writing for the web is preferred.

    The spring intern must be able to commit to about 18 hours a week, for six to eight weeks. Interns will also be paid an hourly rate to be determined. The RBS newsroom is located at 23 W. Broad St. BizSense is also accepting applications for a summer intern.

    Internship Position: Marketing Intern

    Internship description:

    The marketing intern will become in integral part of the RVANews staff, working with our team 10 hours per week to assist in marketing efforts for our website.

    His/her responsibilities will include:

    1. Maintaining our events calendar, a valuable tool on our site that helps serve our audience and advertisers.

    2. Assisting our sales and marketing manager in various administrative tasks, including pulling data and running reports for our advertisers. The intern will also have opportunities to shadow our sales and marketing manager during meetings with clients.

    3. Contributing to and helping to implement our marketing plan for 2010 (including new media, print, and online efforts)

    This internship requires experience with Microsoft Excel and social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook.

    This position will be based out of our office located on the 1500 block of W. Main Street. The intern must be able to provide his/her own transportation. [Note: RVANews is located just a few blocks from the Temple Building.]

    The position is unpaid. However, it is eligible for class credit if approved by VCU. Hours are flexible but a minimum of 10 hours per week is required.

  • Richmond Community News Reporter

    Description: The student will be in charge of writing 5-15 stories a month, varying in length, on nonprofit and community issues facing the Greater Richmond Area and, from time to time, state/national news.

    Students will be expected to generate story ideas on a regular basis but will also be handed story leads from ConnectNetwork and ConnectRichmond staff. Stories may also develop from community events, symposiums and forums occurring in the region, at which the student will be expected to attend and report out.

    Stories will be published weekly on the ConnectRichmond Web site and additional venues as fit. Additional responsibilities might also include day-to-day work with the ConnectNetwork and ConnectRichmond staff. Total work hours will be approximately 10 – 15 hours per week. (This is an unpaid internship.)

    Qualifications: Students must have excellent writing, editing and verbal skills as well as a high degree of professionalism. They must be self-starters, willing to take initiative to chase down interviewees and facts with persistency.

    Work will be structured by deadlines, so timeliness and ability to work independently is crucial. Students with a genuine interest and knowledge of Richmond’s community news and happenings will be strongly preferred.

    PBS at the Capitol Internship Program

    Community Idea Stations in cooperation with VCU School of Mass Communications offers a hands-on, paid internship program in local television production and is soliciting applicants.
    Areas of Emphasis
    Individuals are being sought for the Capitol Bureau. The State Capitol Studio serves the governor and the legislature of Virginia, from covering daily proceedings on the Senate floor, to producing news interviews and programs featuring Virginia’s politicians. The interns take an active and involved role in assigned productions. Experience in a professional, public broadcast studio will give the intern a comprehensive picture of TV production.
    Qualifications and Requirements
    • Minimum of major status in school of mass communications
    • Computer literate
    • Participate in field shoots and carry equipment
    • Commit to 10 to 12 hours per week
    • Provide own parking and transportation to and from the Capitol
    • Successful completion of MASC 366 (TV Production) required; Successful completion of MASC 415 (Advanced TV Production) and MASC 466 (VCU InSight Production) preferred: Successful completion of POLI 321 (Urban Government and Politics), 322 (State and Local Government Politics) or 323 (Virginia Government and Politics) preferred; Previous work experience in production preferred.

    Summer Internship Program Information / Application
    The Virginia Association of Broadcasters (VAB) offers PAID Summer Internship Programs available to students entering their Junior or Senior year ONLY at a college or university that offers undergraduate classes in the following courses of study: Computer Science, Business, Electronic Media, Engineering, Graphic Design and Mass Communications including Advertising, Journalism (print or broadcast), Marketing and Public Relations.

    The Summer Internship Program is an 8-week program beginning Monday, June 7, 2010 and ending Friday, July 30, 2010. All interns should plan to work 40-hours per week at $7.25/hour. A total of 32 students statewide will be selected for the program and all interns will be placed at a radio or television station in the state of Virginia. Every effort is made to place a student in their geographical area of preference; however, this cannot be guaranteed.

    Only students who are Virginia residents OR a non-resident student currently attending an accredited college or University in the state of Virginia are eligible for the Summer Internship Program.

    Rules For Applying
    1. In order to qualify for the intern program, applicants must meet the following conditions:
    o Good moral character.
    o Exhibit grades in previous academic work, which in the judgment of VAB, are adequate to give reasonable assurance of success in completing college.
    o Select a course of study relating to a broadcasting career.
    o Intent to pursue a career in broadcasting.
    o Apply for the grant in the manner outlined herein, and furnish all the information requested on the official application form. Do not send a resume; it will not be used. Only the application will be sent to the judging committee.
    2. All applicant forms must be postmarked by February 12, 2010 (please mail; faxes will not be accepted). The application must be completed in full or it will not be considered. Applications postmarked after February 12, 2010 will not be considered.
    3. The Virginia Association of Broadcasters will contact applicants selected to receive a summer internship via email and/or phone. It is imperative that emails addresses and telephone numbers are printed legibly on the application.
    4. If selected, the applicant will be required to contact the station for which he or she has been paired and to schedule an interview with the assigned station prior to a commitment by the student or station for the internship position.
    5. This is an internship program that constitutes a temporary employment relationship with either a radio or television station. As such, accepted applicants will receive limited benefits and will not be eligible for unemployment compensation at the end of the eight (8) week period.
