  • Porsche 911 PDK vs. Lotus Evora IPS

Porsche 911 PDK VS Lotus Evora IPS

It used to be that if you were a sports car enthusiast that you lived and breathed manual transmissions. Nowadays though, manual shifted automatics like Porsche’s stellar PDK system have started to sway even the most die-hard drivers. These system shift faster and are more efficient then any manual transmission could ever hope to be. They allow you to keep both hands on the wheel, and on the race track there is no question that they’re the way to go. However what about driver involvement? Do they keep you as engaged as a pilot, or are they pulling some of the enjoyment out of driving. Road and Track recently pitted a Porsche 911 PDK and a Lotus Evora IPS in a head-to-head battle to answer this very question.

  • Mercedes-Benz UniMog: Crushin’ It!

    Unimog

When it comes to heading off-road, vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Raptor and Toyota FJ may come to mind. However when it comes to SERIOUS off-roading most people would ditch the aforementioned rides and go straight for the King, or as most know it, the UniMog. Built by Mercedes-Benz, the UniMog has been around since 1947. It’s a true jack-of-all trades and was built primarily to be used by farmers and municipalities. These trucks are not fast, not nimble and certainly not fuel efficient. However, if you are looking for the best off-road vehicle in existence, then there is no beating this thing.

  • Hennessey Ford GT Hits 267.6 MPH At The Texas Mile

    Hennessey Performance

In 2005 Ford released the Ford GT, a halo car that was the modern interpretation of the iconic GT40 race cars of the 1960′s. It was powered by a 5.4-liter V8 with twin screw-type supercharger and produced 550 hp and 557 lb.ft. of torque. It’s top speed was over 200 mph and it would hit 60 mph in 6-seconds. In short the car was outstanding. John Hennessey of Hennessey Performance, recently took his personal Ford GT, strapped on twin-turbos, and then proceeded to set a new record at The Texas Mile by running 267.6 mph. Ladies and gentlemen, if that’s not fast then I don’t know what is. Check out the amazing run after the jump.

  • Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series: CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS

    SLS AMG BLACK

When most people think of Mercedes-Benz they think of high-end luxury and performance. They think of cars that are better suited to the autobahn rather than the racetrack. Yet that hasn’t stopped them from trying to produce cars that can take on the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Ferrari 458. The new Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series is such a car, and according to DRIVE’s resident hoon Chris Harris, it may just have a shot at going for the title.

  • 2013 Ford Taurus SEL: Ridelust Review

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

So here we are – you, me and the 2013 Ford Taurus SEL. This is a car that I really wanted to like, I mean I really did, but unfortunately, I just couldn’t get behind it. This is the sixth generation of Ford’s family hauler, the Taurus. This is the vehicle that redefined what a family car should aspire to be back in the 1980′s. However since its release almost 30-years ago, the Taurus has seemingly lost its way. Yes it will still haul you and your family, but it’s also trying to be a jack-of-all-trades, and unfortunately this is where things go south.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

The Taurus is, and always will be, middle America. It’s meant to carry five adults in reasonable comfort, get decent mileage and have a few nice amenities thrown in for good measure. It’s also supposed to be priced right and offer up more than its import counterparts. And while it has succeeded in some instances, it doesn’t blow them out of the water.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

A good looking car, the styling of the 2013 Taurus is actually quite refined. Smooth and elegant body lines, a nicely sculpted grille and mildly chopped roof line give the Taurus and air of European sportiness. And while it may look great, it seemingly fails to impress once you get underway.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

For instance, at almost 17-feet in length one would expect the Taurus to have loads of interior room. However thanks to an over-sized center console, driver and passenger leg room is actually quite tight. Taller drivers will have their right leg pinched up against the console while those riding shotgun will be constantly moving their seats up for those positioned in the rear.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

Ford’s touchscreen SYNC system sits dead center in the dash and provides one with access to everything from the vehicles climate and audio settings, to your Bluetooth and navigation unit. Beneath the touchscreen resides a secondary touch pad that will also help you with climate and audio controls, however it’s void of actual buttons, thus making it feel cheap and like somewhat of an after thought.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

My tester came equipped with the optional 2.0-liter I4 Ecoboost engine that pumps out 240 hp and 270 lb.ft. of torque. Not terrible numbers mind you, but not great numbers either, especially for a car that weighs around 4,000 lbs. Economy is the name of the game with the I4 Ecoboost and it delivers to the tune of 22 mpg city and 32 mpg hwy. Power is put down by way of a smooth shifting 6-speed transmission with a thumb mounted gear selector.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

An interesting touch, but honestly, just leave the thing in automatic mode and let the engine and transmission work as the engineers intended. Stomp the gas and Taurus will get to 60 mph in just over 7-seconds and move you onto a top speed of 112 mph. It will also provide the driver with nicely weighted steering and confidence inspiring brakes.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

The interior is a combination of leather, soft and hard touch plastic and vinyl. And while there are some silver accents thrown in for good measure, I found it to be a rather drab place to be. However trunk space is quite liberal at 20.1 cubic-feet, so if you’re planning on a road trip, rest assured that you’ll be able to fit quite a bit of stuff back there.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

Driving the Taurus is about exciting as eating a bowl of matzo ball soup. Yes, it will fill you up and make you feel cozy and warm, but it won’t fill you with adrenaline, nor will it trigger much emotion.

    2013 Ford Taurus SEL

Here’s the thing. Ford makes GOOD cars, they do. I mean the Mustang kicks ass (hell, I own one), the Focus in any form is great, and then there’s the F-150 which we all know is awesome. So why then Ford – why’d you drop the ball so far on this Taurus? In trying to make a car that appealed to everyone, it feels like you created something that simply doesn’t have enough of anything to get us excited. $35,180.00 is a lot to pay for plain vanilla ice cream. However throw in a little whipped-cream and a cherry next time, and you may just have something.

    Jalopy Run

Putting the screws to an old hot-rod or muscle car is one of the best feelings on the planet. They rattle, shake and throw you around like nothing else, and at days end, make you feel like you’re actually driving something mechanical. There are no anti-lock brakes, airbags or even independent suspension systems. Just a big engine, a solid-live axle in the rear and the perma-grin that’s plastered on your face as soon as you hit the gas.

  • Random Subaru Hoonage

    Subaru Hoon

As 16 and 17 year old kids the only thing we wanted to do with our cars was to go out and cause trouble. Burnouts, donuts, j-turns were our signature moves, but every now and then we’d be able to find some trails and do a little auto-crossing. We’d find a nice open field, wait until the sun went down, and then let the hoonage begin. Now granted, we were driving crappy cars from the late 1970′s and early 80′s, so we never achieved the visceral WOW factor of what you’re about to see. Regardless though, as long as there are teenagers with cars, you can bet your ass that disturbing the neighbors and causing trouble will never go away.

    Porsche 911 GT2

To call the Porsche 911 GT2 a Porsche Turbo on steroids, really doesn’t do this car justice. We’re not taking anything away from the Turbo here, but where that’s a more high performance street car, the GT2 is more of a true drivers car. Powered by a twin-turbo flat-six that makes 530 hp, the GT2 is rear-wheel drive only and comes with a proper 6-speed manual transmission. Not as hard edged as the GT2 RS or GT3 RS, the GT2 fits into that perfect slot by blending all day livability and power, with flat-out track performance. Such an amazing machine.

Every automobile enthusiast out there has that one car or truck that they look upon as their holy grail. It’s the vehicle that lit the spark under their bottom and got them revved up about anything with an engine. For Fred Williams, host of Dirt Everyday on MotorTrend’s Youtube channel, that vehicle happened to be a beat up 1951 Jeep CJ3a that he saw in a magazine way back in 1989. It was dirty and rough around the edges, but it worked flawlessly and acted as the off-road catalyst for Fred. Check it out after the jump.

If you’re an automotive enthusiast here in the United States then you probably know there were earlier versions of the Nissan GT-R before the current model. In fact the Nissan GT-R has been around in one form or another since 1969. The R32, or third Gen GT-R, was produced from 1989-1994 and never sold here in the States. • What’s your secret automotive obsession?

    Sport Fury 1970

Here you have it, the car I have been lusting after for about 15 years. This is a 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury, and in my eyes it’s one of the coolest road-sleds ever made. About the size of a Chevrolet Suburban, the ’70 Sport Fury is one of the cars that you either love or hate. Men seem to gravitate towards it, while women are generally repulsed. The fuselage styling, considered to be cutting edge in the 1970′s, gives the car a wonderfully aggressive look. Combine that with a blacked-out grille and the option of a 7.2-liter 440 cubic inch V8 with a Six-Pack set-up, and we’re talking about a car that has “EVIL” written all over it.

So, let’s hear it – what’s the one car that you’d eventually love to have in your garage?

  • 50th Anniversary of the Pagoda SL: eGarage

    Mercedes-Benz Roadster

Is it really possible to recreate a legend? Some people out there may say yes, but I think the majority would agree that legends are born, not created. When asked to come up with a successor to the iconic 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, designer Paul Bracq had a decision to make. He could try to improve upon a design that was, in the eyes of many enthusiasts, flawless. Or he could craft his own shape and thus, create a new legend. Bracqs’ vision was the Mercedes-Benz W113 SL, a car that made its debut in 1963 and continued production until 1971. More than 48,000 cars where produced and in that time a new audience was found to take up the reigns and help write the next chapter of the Mercedes-Benz roadster.
