  • 2014 Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel vs 2013 Volkswagen Touareg

    Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel

10 years ago if you were to tell someone that they needed to pay over $50K for a Jeep Grand Cherokee, they’d probably laugh at you. This however isn’t 10 years ago, it’s 2013 and this new Jeep Cherokee EcoDiesel is hands-down worth every penny. Not long ago I had the opportunity to test drive the new Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel in Austin, TX and truth be told, it’s a wonderful vehicle. The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg is also a decent SUV. Not wonderful mind you, but decent. The interior feels bland and stagnant compared to the Grand Cherokee, but on the road it’s a little more compliant in my opinion. Motor Trend’s Jonny Lieberman recently got these two trucks together for a little off-road showdown and I’m happy to say that his conclusions about both vehicles were very similar to my own.

    Toyota Supra Rally Car

If you were to build a car to compete in the WRC (World Rally Championship), the odds of you choosing something that’s relatively compact with all-wheel-drive would be pretty good. Cars like the Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi EVO immediately come to mind, but a late model rear-wheel drive Toyota Supra?!? Hmm… that may not be the best choice. Norway’s Kenneth Moen however not only disagrees, but has set up one of the sweetest Supra’s I’ve ever seen. • 5 Emergency Items Every Motorist Should Have

    Image:

It dawned on me recently as I was driving along in the middle of nowhere California that most drivers aren’t properly prepared for those “Oh SHIT!” moments. Therefore I’ve decided to make a quick list of things that you should never be without, and it applies to all drivers, regardless of your daily distance traveled.

    1. Cell Phone: These little devices are generally the first line of defense when you’re stranded out there on the open road. They give you comfort, provide you with the contact and emergency information of those that can help, and give you the ability to call on #2 on the list. Oh… and don’t forget to keep your cell charger in the car at all times.

    AAAPremier

    2. AAA Card:
The American Automobile Association (or Triple-A) has been around since 1902 with the main purpose of helping stranded motorists wherever they may be. Now here’s the deal. If you haven’t signed up for their service then do so NOW! And don’t be cheap – get their “Premier” service. It gives you 200 miles of free towing and only costs around $119.00 per year. Trust me on this, because if you’ve ever been stranded without any type of towing service then you already know that it costs upwards of $4.50 per/mile for a tow and that can add up real quick!

    FixAFlat

    3. Can of Fix-O-Flat:
Many of today’s newest cars come with 19-inch or larger wheels. This means that odds of you actually having a spare are slim to none. Some manufacturers are kind enough to provide you with a can of the stuff already, but if you’re like me, then you always know that it’s better to have a spare. Also, if you have one of these kits already in your car, make sure to check the expiration date (yes they do expire) so you’re not S.O.L. if a tire goes South.

    RoadSideFlares

    4. Roadside Flares: Being stuck on the side of the road sucks, especially at night when oncoming automobiles can’t see you. Carrying 3 or 4 roadside flares solves this problem by not only alerting other drivers to your presence, but also giving you piece of mind so that no one (hopefully) slams into you.

    FirstAidKit

    5. First Aid Kit: From slamming that finger in the car door, to hitting your head on the hood-latch while checking the oil, a small first aid kit can come in handier than you know. Get a good one with some bandages, band-aids and a good disinfectant just in case you really mess yourself up.

  • You’re Doing it Wrong: How NOT to do a burnout.

    Mustang Fail

For some, mastering the art of the burnout is simple. You simply rev the engine to around 5k, dump the clutch and PRESTO! Tire smoke galore. However trying to perform a brake stand with in a car equipped with a manual transmission can be a bit tricky. Most of the time you simply side-step the clutch and you’re done. However do this incorrectly and shit can go wrong VERY quickly, a lesson that the owner of this late model Mustang found out as he was leaving a local car show. No joke, this is literally painful to watch…

    VW Beetle Floating

There is no denying that the Volkswagen Beetle does a lot of things well. It gets decent fuel economy, is fun to drive and is small enough that you can generally park it anywhere. But crossing a lake? That’s a bit much even for a Beetle. If you’re a redneck though and you’ve got a crowd of drunk spectators goading you on, well then, I suppose anything is possible. • How to Drive Without Getting a Ticket: Car & Driver

    Speeding

Let’s be honest, if you drive a car on a regular basis then the odds of you speeding are pretty good. Be it 5 mph or 25 mph over the legal limit, speeding is speeding, and in case you didn’t know, that means you’re breaking the law. However most law enforcement agents tend to look the other way if you’re not abusing the limits. For instance, if the speed limit is 55 mph, it’s not uncommon to see motorists cruising at 65 mph – I mean we all do it right? Csaba Csere, contributing editor for Car and Driver magazine understands this and has put together a little video that tells how not to break the law, but simply circumnavigate it a bit.

  • Boss 302 vs BMW 1M vs BMW M3: Everyday Driver

    BMW 1M

Since the late 1980′s the BMW M3 has been one of the best cars out there offering up a great combination of performance, usability and style. Out of the box they’re outstanding machines, however over the years the M3 has seemingly become a watered-down version of its former self. So much so in fact that cars like the Boss 302 Mustang, and even BMW’s own 1M, can be offered up as competition. Everyday Driver decided to pit that aforementioned Ford and 1M against the M3 to see if the old boy should still retain its crown, or if it still brings out the same emotion the original car did all those years ago.

  • Boeing 747 Lifting in place in extreme wind conditions.

    Boeing 747

Okay, so this post may not be automotive related, but it is pretty flippin’ cool. What you are seeing is a Boeing 747 that’s sitting at the fabled aircraft bone yard in Mojave, CA in extremely high wind conditions (think 70-100 mph gusts). A tail-heavy plane to begin with, the big 747 is literally lifted skyward as the high winds hit, thanks in part to its heavy engines being removed and its landing flaps deployed. The video is not fake and just goes to show us that, regardless of how large and item is, Mother Nature can (an will) always get the upper hand.

  • 2013 BMW 135is: Ridelust Review

    2013 BMW 135is

    PRO’s: Quick, nimble, smiles-for-miles little hot-rod.

CON’s: Big price tag, lack of limited-slip-differential.

FINAL THOUGHT: The 2013 BMW 135is is a little pocket-rocket of a car that will make you rediscover driving at its core. It’s fun, fast and has the ability to make even grown men giggle.

Buying a car is not a rational decision, it’s an emotional one. We look at style, performance and how that particular vehicle makes us feel. Does it make us smile when we open the garage door. Does it make the right sound when we turn the key. Above all, does it get our adrenaline flowing when we simply go out for a drive. In a day and age where cars are weighed down by government safety regulations, technology and each company trying to outdo the next guy, it’s nice to see that BMW makes at least one car that throws up its middle finger and shows us that a car can still be a good time.

    2013 BMW 135is

Enter the 2013 BMW 135is. A little pocket rocket of a car that not only puts some serious fun back into driving, but reminds us of a time when cars were cars, not computers. Before we begin let’s get one thing straight. The 135is is not a BMW “M” car, regardless of the fact that it has a few “M” badges here and there. Instead, it’s a BMW 135i with some nifty add-ons from BMW’s parts bin.

    2013 BMW 135is

A performance exhaust system and power performance kit (updated engine ECU software) help bump horsepower from the standard 300 hp and 300 lb.ft of torque, to 320 hp and 317 lb.ft. Not a monumental increase mind you, but enough to make you feel like you got something for all that extra cheddar. The single turbo straight-6 engine is as smooth as they come. Power delivery is linear all through the rev-range, however once you’re over 2000 rpms, you’ll feel this thing pull like a mini freight train.

    2013 BMW 135is

My tester was equipped with a six-speed manual transmission that was nothing short of sublime. Gear changes were crisp and smooth with short throws, while a perfectly weighted clutch made driving, even in traffic, a pretty enjoyable experience. I flogged this little car mercilessly on my favorite back roads, and the harder I pushed it, the more enjoyable the car became.

    2013 BMW 135is

Wrap your hands around the thick steering wheel, turn the traction control off and dump the clutch and you’ll find that the 135is is a deceivingly quick little car. 0-60 mph comes up in under 5-seconds with reserve power always on hand. Find the tightest road you can just so you can shift gears at every opportunity.

    2013 BMW 135is

I have to say that the Performance Exhaust is a nice touch, as on deceleration you’re treated to some wonderful burbles and pops that will definitely turn heads. If there is one slight in the performance department, it’s the absence of a limited slip differential. I did the ole’ one-wheel peel more than a few times while tearing up the canyons. Not a deal breaker by any means, but something I would definitely remedy if I were to take the 135is to a track day.

    2013 BMW 135is

Climb inside and immediately you’ll notice that the fit, finish and materials used throughout the cabin are all top notch. However one thing that struck me immediately was the lack of a large screen in the center of the dash, something that we’re so accustomed to seeing these days in newer cars. There was no navigation, no touch-screen and nothing that took away from the simplistic appeal of the cars interior. In short, it was fantastic.

    2013 BMW 135is

Even though the 135is is a small car that doesn’t mean the interior (at least the front portion anyway) was tight. At 6’4″ / 245-pounds, I not only had ample head and shoulder room, but my right leg wasn’t butted up against the center console, something that usually happens in smaller cars. The front sport seats, while comfortable, will be a bit on the narrow side for larger drivers, but never once did I find them annoying. The 135is does come equipped with rear seats, but I wouldn’t recommend them unless you’re child-sized. The same can be said for cargo space. Yes, you’ll get a few duffel bags in the trunk, but I wouldn’t plan a month long getaway in this thing.

    2013 BMW 135is

This is a car that’s based around the enjoyment of driving, something that I almost think BMW has forgotten about. With the exception of the M3, I honestly can’t think of another BMW that I would actually own as most their cars as so crammed full of tech and luxury that they’re simply no fun to drive. Are they good cars? Absolutely, but for some reason the company has lost their emotional way. The 135is however is the exception, as it inspires it’s drivers to have fun, to enjoy the drive and push the limits a little bit. This car is what the original M3 was; small, light and a riot on the road.

    2013 BMW 135is

As you can tell I like this car – a lot. However after pricing it out you’ll find that there is a substantial cost for all this fun. With a base price of $43,250, the 135is is not an inexpensive machine, and in fact our tester (loaded with options) was price at just under $49,000. The real question here is – how much are you willing to pay for a little car that has the ability to put a smile on your face every time you drive it?

    My bet… it’s around $49k.

  • BMW Films: Star

    Star BMW E39 M5

Between 2001 and 2002 BMW produced a series of short films to be aired only on the internet. They featured some of the film industries greatest directors and some of its best talent. “STAR” showcases the then new, BMW E39 M5 in what is perhaps its best starring role to date. This is a car that some consider to be the last true M5. Equipped with a naturally aspirated V8 that pumped out 400 hp through a 6-speed manual transmission, the E39 M5 was not only one of the best muscle-sedans ever produced, but a true drivers car. Clive Owen and Madonna star in the video as well, but can’t hold a candle to what may be one of the best cars BMW ever produced.
