  • Facebook Home Tops 500K Installs, Over 50% 1-Star Reviews

Facebook Home, Facebook’s Android homescreen takeover, has been available for just over a week. In that time, we’ve seen the app take on a barrage of negative reviews.

But people are still downloading it and trying it out. As of today, Facebook Home on Google Play has surpassed 500,000 installs.

We don’t know the exact number of installs, as Google Play only gives us an unspecific snapshot of the numbers. Right now, it says that the number of installs is somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million. The Next Web noticed that Twitter users noticed the jump from “100,000 to 500,000″ to “500,000 to 1 million” some time on Sunday.

500,000 may seem like a small number of installs, considering that Facebook has over a billion monthly active users and that something like the Facebook app has between 100 million and 500 million installs. But in a week’s time, to be working its way to a million installs, is pretty good for Facebook Home considering it’s only available on a handful of Android devices.

Still, the news isn’t nearly all positive for Facebook. Facebook Home is still suffering from poor user reviews. Last week, we told you that after just 3 days on the market, Facebook Home had sunk to an average rating of 2.4 out of 5 in the Google Play Store. At that time, 47% of all reviews awarded the app 1 star.

Now, at Facebook Home surpassed 500,000 installs, the negativity is growing. The average rating has fallen to 2.2 and 1-star reviews now account for nearly 52% of all reviews.

  • Reese Witherspoon Arrested After Drunken Fight With Cop

Reese Witherspoon, usually the very picture of poise and good taste, was arrested on Friday after hurling insults at the cop who pulled her husband over on suspicion of DUI.

The actress and her husband, Jim Toth, had been out in Atlanta, apparently having a very good time; when an officer noticed that Toth was driving in the wrong lane, he promptly pulled him over. Witherspoon then began to pull the old, “Don’t you know who I am” routine on the cop, who was having none of it.

“Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe I was a real police officer,” the officer wrote in a police report. “I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet. Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don’t need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘Right now.’ Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am.’… Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, ‘You’re going to be on national news.’ I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine.”

Witherspoon was then handcuffed and arrested for disobeying repeated orders from the officer and she and Toth, who now faces a DUI charge, were taken into custody. The actress is charged with disorderly conduct.

News of the arrest comes as a shock to fans, as the mom of three cemented her status as America’s Sweetheart with films such as “Man In The Moon”, “Sweet Home Alabama”, and “Legally Blonde”. She was in Atlanta to film “The Good Lie”. She recently released a statement regarding the arrest and her behavior:

”I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”

  • Google Fined $190K For Wi-Fi Data Collection In Germany

Google is still taking heat and being fined over the Wi-Fi data collection fiasco that took place between 2008 and 2010.

This morning, Bloomberg reports that a German regulator has fined the company 145,000 euros ($189,230) over the debacle. From Bloomberg’s Karin Matussek:

Hamburg data regulator Johannes Caspar said in an e- mailed statement today. He had reopened the probe after prosecutors dropped a related criminal case last year.

“In my view, this is one of the biggest data protection rules violations known,” said Caspar. Google’s “internal control mechanisms must have severely failed.”

In 2011, France fined Google $142,000.

Last year, Google was fined $25,000 by the FCC for obstructing an investigation into its related practices, though the Commission ended up dropping the investigation.

Last month, Google settled with 38 states in the U.S. over the issue.

  • Lake County Fiber Plan Apparently Good as Done

The Minneapolis Star Tribune paints a happy picture for the ARRA-funded Lake County Fiber Network…

Since the northern Minnesota county won the state’s largest package of federal broadband grants and loans, $66.4 million, in 2010, it’s been fighting a running battle with its competitors — cable TV company Mediacom and telephone company Frontier Communications — over whether a publicly funded network should compete with private business. But the opponents were unsuccessful at stopping the project, and about half of the 1,500-mile fiber network will be built this year.

“Our funds are committed,” said Lake County Commissioner Paul Bergman in an interview Friday. “We’ve already applied for $40 million of our loan and grant money. It would take an act of Congress to kill the project now.”

They report that both Mediacom and Frontier are backing off the project. There is one potential hiccup, but even if that doesn’t go well, the network will press on…

The county’s only remaining challenge related to the broadband project is a $4.9 million, 2011 lawsuit over the way the county originally planned to obtain bonds for its roughly $3.5 million share of the nearly $70 million broadband network. The plaintiff, Orix Public Finance, alleged that it was initially asked to participate, then dropped from the project. It has asked U.S. District Court in Duluth for a summary judgment in its favor.

  • Grid giant ABB throws down $1B for Power-One and its solar gear

Even though solar panel makers are struggling mightily, the solar panel market is expected to grow steadily. That’s why Swiss grid giant ABB announced on Monday morning that it will spend around $1 billion to buy one of the leaders in the solar inverter industry, publicly-traded, Power-One. Solar inverters convert power from solar panels into usable power.

ABB is spending $6.35 a share for Power-One. Power-One has 3,300 employees, and in 2012 produced $120 million in earnings, with $1 billion in sales. Bloomberg reports that the deal is 7.7 times Power-One’s earnings (EBITDA), which is lower than the average price of 8.5 times earnings that has been paid over the past three years for clean power companies.

There was a record-breaking 3.3 gigawatts worth of solar panels — or 16 million individual solar panels — installed in the U.S. in 2012, making solar power the fastest-growing energy source domestically. Another record year is expected in 2013.

Solar panel makers are struggling because the price of solar panels is so cheap right now, and that has led to an oversupply of panels in the market. There will be more consolidation and bankruptcy this year for solar panel makers.

In recent years the solar inverter market has also been developing new technology, and have begun to introduce micro inverters, or smaller inverters coupled with each solar panel. Traditional solar inverters are larger are there have commonly been one per solar panel rooftop installation. ABB has been aggressively acquiring technology across the power grid sector, and has also been investing in clean power tech through its venture arm, over the past two years.

  • CDNify launches, based on OnApp’s federated CDN

A month after OnApp launched its CDN-in-a-box package for resellers, here comes an exemplary result: a new, startup-oriented content delivery network (CDN) called CDNify.

CDNs using OnApp’s federation (OnApp also has its own effort here, CDN.net) can tap into the spare capacity of service providers around the world, with more than 150 points of presence (PoPs) theoretically being at their disposal. CDNify is launching with 40 PoPs, and it’s trying to win over customers on price and simplicity, as founder James Mulvany told me:

“We want to have a very low cost of entry, starting with a free account – you can start using it straight away, to play with the system. We’ve got things like nice reporting, good graphs so you can see your usage, decent support and video tutorials.

“The front-end system that customers will use is something we’ve built in-house. It’s fairly simple, although we’ve got lots of exciting features that we’ll be rolling out over the next year. We’re trying to create a very clean experience.”

In terms of price, CDNify charges $0.05/GB/month, which significantly undercuts both Amazon and Rackspace ($0.12/GB/month for the first 10TB of traffic). Additionally, Mulvany said, “Amazon charges you for the number of hits you get, whereas we just charge on bandwidth.”

CDNify is privately funded off the back of the founders’ other business, internet radio outfit Wavestreaming — and, as it happens, the launch of that service provided the impetus for CDNify. “We started looking at CDNs and found they were aiming towards the enterprise, the big guys,” Mulvany said. “We decided to build CDNify for people like us: web companies, startups and mobile app developers.”

Mulvany said CDNify expects its initial growth to come from the North American and European markets, although the company is “not targeting any specific region.”

    Here’s a video pitch:

  • How to Really Understand Someone Else’s Point of View

20130423_2.jpgThe most influential people strive for genuine buy in and commitment — they don’t rely on compliance techniques that only secure short-term persuasion. That was our conclusion after interviewing over 100 highly respected influences across many different industries and organizations for our recent book.

These high-impact influencers follow a pattern of four steps that all of us can put into action. In earlier pieces we covered Step 1: Go for great outcomes and Step 2: Listen past your blind spots. Later we’ll cover Step 4: When you’ve done enough… do more. Here we cover Step 3: Engage others in “their there.”

To understand why this step is so important, imagine that you’re at one end of a shopping mall — say, the northeast corner, by a cafe. Next, imagine that a friend of yours is at the opposite end of the mall, next to a toy store. And imagine that you’re telling that person how to get to where you are.

Now, picture yourself saying, “To get to where I am, start in the northeast corner by a cafe.” That doesn’t make sense, does it? Because that’s where you are, not where the other person is.

Yet that’s how we often try to convince others — on our terms, from our assumptions, and based on our experiences. We present our case from our point of view. There’s a communication chasm between us and them, but we’re acting as if they’re already on our side of the gap.

Like in the shopping mall example, we make a mistake by starting with how we see things (“our here”). To help the other person move, we need to start with how they see things (“their there”).

For real influence we need to go from our here to their there to engage others in three specific ways:

    1. Situational Awareness: Show that You Get “It.” Show that you understand the opportunities and challenges your conversational counterpart is facing. Offer ideas that work in the person’s there. When you’ve grasped their reality in a way that rings true, you’ll hear comments like “You really get it!” or “You actually understand what I’m dealing with here.”
    2. Personal Awareness: You Get “Them.” Show that you understand his or her strengths, weaknesses, goals, hopes, priorities, needs, limitations, fears, and concerns. In addition, you demonstrate that you’re willing to connect with them on a personal level. When you do this right, you’ll hear people say things like “You really get me!” or “You actually understand where I’m coming from on this.”
    3. Solution Awareness: You Get Their Path to Progress. Show people a positive path that enables them to make progress on their own terms. Give them options and alternatives that empower them. Based on your understanding of their situation and what’s at stake for them personally, offer possibilities for making things better — and help them think more clearly, feel better, and act smarter. When you succeed, you’ll hear comments like, “That could really work!” or “I see how that would help me.”

One of our favorite examples involves Mike Critelli, former CEO of the extraordinarily successful company, Pitney Bowes. Mike was one of the highly prestigious Good to Great CEOs featured in the seminal book by Jim Collins on how the most successful businesses achieve their results.

One of Mike’s many strengths is the ability to engage his team on their terms to achieve high levels of performance and motivation. When we asked him about this, he said, “Very often what motivates people are the little gestures, and a leader needs to listen for those. It’s about picking up on other things that are most meaningful to people.”

For example, one employee had a passing conversation with Mike about the challenges of adopting a child, pointing out that Pitney Bowes had an inadequate adoption benefit. A few weeks after that, he and his wife received a letter from Mike congratulating them on their new child — along with a check for the amount of the new adoption benefit the company had just started offering.

When he retired, the Pitney Bowes employees put together a video in which they expressed their appreciation for his positive influence over the years. They all talk about ways that Mike “got” them — personal connections and actions that have accumulated over time into a reputation that attracted great people to the organization and motivated them to stay.

It’s a moving set of testimonials, and it’s telling about Critelli’s ability to “get” people on their own terms — to go to their there — that they openly express their appreciation permanently captured on video for open public viewing.

Remember, they did this after he was no longer in power.

Like Mike Critelli does, when you practice all three of these ways of “getting” others — situational, personal, and solution-oriented — you understand who people are, what they’re facing, and what they need in order to move forward. This is a powerful way to achieve great results while strengthening your relationships.

When you’re trying to influence, don’t start by trying to pull others into your here. Instead, go to their there by to asking yourself:

    • Am I getting who this person is?
    • Am I getting this person’s situation?
    • Am I offering options and alternatives that will help this person move forward?
    • Does this person get that I get it?

  • From SOA to PaaS: How to create enterprise architectures in the cloud

There are those who believe that cloud computing means we can avoid traditional best practices. They think they can avoid a solid foundation in architecture planning. As cloud systems are created, we find that nothing is further from the truth.

Lessons learned from the use of SOA and other architectural best practices are beneficial when applied to the construction of cloud-based systems. Applications developed using PaaS and other cloud-based tools should be designed in keeping with principles such as request-driven programmatic access, loose coupling of components, and stateless instances.

In this webinar, our panel of experts will discuss:

    • The traditional paths to PaaS/cloud architecture, such as SOA
    • Best practices for writing applications for clouds
    • Using PaaS to standardize development workflows
    • Why it’s important to support multiple languages across a variety of platforms
    • How to dial into the capabilities of PaaS for your architecture

  • Earth Day 2013 Celebrated with Interactive Google Doodle

For Earth Day 2013, Google is celebrating with an interactive doodle that lets you experience much of what nature has to offer – in animated form, of course. Google’s Earth Day doodle lets you change the seasons, weather, moon, and more.

“Today we are celebrating Earth Day with an interactive doodle that captures a slice of nature’s subtle wonders. We hope you enjoy discovering animals, controlling the weather, and observing the seasons. Use the sightseeing checklist below to make sure you do not miss anything!” says Doodler Leon Hong.

Indeed, Google has provided a Doodle checklist. So, click around and have fun.

Earth Day, as we know it, is celebrated on April 22nd. Back in 1969, the first Earth Day was proposed at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco to be celebrated on March 21st. A month or so later, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson held an additional Earth Day on April 22nd, as an environmental teach-in. In 1990, the April celebration went international, and it is currently celebrated in nearly 200 countries worldwide.

Last year, Google’s Earth Day doodle was also animated, though not quite interactive. The doodle was a time lapse photo of flowers blooming and eventually forming the Google logo.

  • Kendra Wilkinson: Hospital Trip Following Car Crash

Kendra Wilkinson, the former Playboy model and “Girls Next Door” star, was rushed to the hospital on Sunday following what has been described as a “bad” car accident in L.A.

Wilkinson wasn’t seriously injured in the accident but was taken to the hospital as a precaution; she described her condition as “really sore” and said she was in shock, but was discharged soon after being admitted. There are few details as to the cause of the accident or the condition of the other driver involved at this time.

Wilkinson has moved on from the Playboy world and has recently appeared in various reality programs, such as “Celebrity Wife Swap”–where she traded lives with Kate Gosselin for a week–and the diving competition “Splash”. The young mom recently left the show, however, stating a fear of injury and calling her decision to appear on the show a “mistake”.

“I’m so sorry, everybody. It’s bittersweet. One thing I don’t do is quit. This is the first time in my life I’ve quit something,” she said. “This will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

  • The cost of iPhone quality control: $1.2B in faulty phones returned by Apple in 2013 alone

$1.2B in faulty phones returned by Apple in 2013 alone
Apple has made plenty of headlines over its reported supply chain woes this year and now The Register has translated a new report from China Business claiming that Apple recently returned at least 5 million iPhones to Foxconn this year due to some kind of unnamed defect. The Register notes that “with a cost to manufacture of $US200 apiece, Foxconn is apparently preparing to take a hit of up to $1.6bn to cover the cost of making replacement handsets,” which would certainly be a major blow to the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer. The report of the returned iPhones comes after Foxconn earlier this month posted a 19% drop in year-over-year revenue that was attributable in large part to “disappointing” recent iPhone sales.

  • LPFA Appoints Deputy Chairman and Board Members

The London Pensions Fund Authority has appointed Sir Merrick Cockell as deputy chairman. The LPFA has also added of three pensions industry veterans to its board.

    PRESS RELEASE

LPFA cements reputation as centre of excellence in public pensions management with the appointment of three industry heavyweights to its Board, and of Sir Merrick Cockell, who stood down as Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea after 13 years this week, as Deputy Chairman.
The London Pensions Fund Authority (“LPFA”), one of the largest Local Government Pension Scheme (“LGPS”) funds in the UK, today announces the appointment of Sir Merrick Cockell as Deputy Chairman and the addition of three pensions industry veterans to its Board.
Sir Merrick stepped down as Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea after 13 years this week, while the new Board members are Dermot McMullan (Trustee of the Bank of America UK Pension Plan), Abdallah Nauphal (Chief Executive Officer at Insight Investment) and Kerry Adby (Managing Director at Copernican Securities).
The confirmation of McMullan, Nauphal and Adby as Non-Executive Directors – all of whom bring with them extensive experience of the pensions industry – further supports the LPFA’s reputation as the best-in-class manager of public pensions. McMuillen has been a Trustee of the Bank of America UK Pension Plan since 2003, taking over as chairman in 2007. This year he was also appointed a Director of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch UK Pension Plan.
Nauphal is currently CEO of Insight Investment, an asset management firm that manages more than £220bn, mostly on behalf of UK pension schemes. Since joining Insight in 2003, Nauphal has re-engineered the business to focus on bridging the gap between clients’ specific investment needs and the largely generic products on offer.
Adby is Managing Director at Copernican Securities, a specialist consultancy that provides structured, corporate and strategic advisory services. She brings with her a wealth of pensions experience, with current and recent Board roles including the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board, WINenergy and the WorkCover NSW Insurance Fund. In addition she has served as a pensions adviser to the World Bank.

  • Controlling you smartphone or tablet with your brain could be a reality thanks to Samsung and the University of Texas

    samsung_using_EEG__to_control_tablet

Using your brain to control a smartphone or tablet is something that could be a reality thanks to Samsung and the University of Texas. Instead of tapping on the display, you could use your thoughts to open an application, select a song to play, or select a contact. They are already demonstrating this on the Galaxy Note 10.1, but users need to wear a wild looking cap filled with EEG Electrodes.

Now don’t expect to see this type of technology anytime soon, but this isn’t anything new. I saw something very similar at CES using similar technology from Puzzlebox. They utilize the same technology from NeuroSky to show how concentration can keep a remote control helicopter in the air. A tablet was also used, but only as a way of displaying the levels of concentration. You can watch that video after the break.

  • Intel’s TV project loses key exec months before going to market

Intel Media, the chip giant’s ambitious attempt to reinvent pay TV, has lost a key executive just months before going to market. Jim Baldwin, who was working as VP of Engineering for Intel Media, has left the company.

    jim-baldwin_1

Jim Baldwin was Intel Media’s VP of Engineering until his departure in April.

An Intel Media spokesperson confirmed this when contacted by GigaOM, saying that “Baldwin left Intel Media to pursue opportunities outside the company.” Baldwin’s Linkedin profile put the change a bit more bluntly, listing “retired” as his current job. Intel Media’s spokesperson didn’t have any further comment on the circumstances of his departure, and Baldwin didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Baldwin came to Intel from Microsoft, where he served as CTO for the Interactive Entertainment Business unit as well as Engineering Director for Microsoft’s Mediaroom business. A recent job offer for Intel Media included this tidbit about Baldwin’s bio:

“Jim joined Microsoft in 1997 as a part of the WebTV acquisition, Jim has been a key architect of digital video technology for various products including the WebTV Plus, Echostar Dishplayer, DirecTV UltimateTV and Microsoft TV. ”

No matter the circumstances, losing a key exec during the last stretch of the race can’t be good news for Intel Media. The project is currently running a private test in three markets, and Intel Media boss Erik Huggers said in February that the service will be available to consumers before the end of the year. Intel’s spokesperson had this to say about the impact of the departure: “He will be missed, but we have a very strong engineering organization in place with a deep leadership bench.”

Intel Media wants to offer consumers a TV subscription service over the internet, complete with a catch-up feature that will allow viewers to go back and view anything that has aired on any channel within a given time frame. Consumers will be able to access the service through an Intel-made set-top box as well as through tablets and other devices.

Huggers said in February that the service will be marketed under a separate brand that hasn’t been revealed yet. However, I recently found some clues suggesting that the new branding will be tied to Intel’s legacy brand with the tagline “Intel inside & out.”

  • Home is where the heart is: Facebook Home downloads top 500,000

Home is where the heart is: Facebook Home downloads top 500,000
Facebook’s new Home software saw mixed reviews from those who took an early look at it, but tech bloggers and reporters aren’t exactly Facebook’s target market. Among Facebook’s heavier users, the software seems to have piqued a fair amount of interest. As TechCrunch noted over the weekend, Facebook Home downloads from the Google Play app store topped 500,000 on Sunday. The figure doesn’t seem terribly impressive at first sight considering that more than a billion people use Facebook each month, but the software is only available on five different handsets for the time being so it’s certainly a respectable start.
