  • Ninja cat | Bad Astronomy

I’ve seen this several times, and it still makes me laugh.

Mrs. BA got me a Flip vidcam for Christmas, and I’ve been following around my cat for days. She doesn’t do anything interesting until I have my back turned. Sigh.

Anyway, you may enjoy this strange video of a cat being either happy or ticked. Maybe it’s Schrödinger’s cat, and it’s both.

  • Late United Airlines Contract Draws World-Wide Flight Attendant Protest Jan. 7

Angry Flight Attendants Picket Airports Around the World Jan. 7

United Airlines Flight Attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO (AFA-CWA), will conduct a world-wide protest over the failure of United Airlines management to negotiate a new contract on time.

Over seven years ago flight attendants took deep cuts in pay and then management destroyed their working conditions and cancelled their pensions.

Those cuts were scheduled to conclude Jan. 7, 2010 as the Contract becomes amendable.

Negotiations began early on April 6, 2009 as part of an agreement between the union and the company with the intention of having a new flight attendant contract in place by Jan. 7, 2010.

Flight attendants are working at 1994 wage levels in the year 2010 and working 48% more compared with 2002 schedules and staffing.

When United exited bankruptcy CEO Glenn Tilton alone took a bonus that could have provided a 10 percent pay raise for all 15,000 flight attendants.

AFA-CWA members are angry that management has not discussed the improvements envisioned, seeming only interested in delaying a new Contract for flight attendants.

  • MINI E Preliminary Test Results

The MINI E is an all-electric vehicle produced by MINI. The car was launched in November 2008 and was leased since spring 2009 to people living in California, New York, New Jersey, Berlin, London and Munich.

At this time, the preliminary report shows that test drivers used their Mini E for 80 per cent of their runs, but 90 per cent preferred four seats and more luggage space. The sporty feel was appreciated by all test drivers, mainly 35 year old males with a higher education.

  • Vimeo Unleashes 1080p Videos for 'Plus' Subscribers

In a world where YouTube dominates online video in a very clear fashion, other players are trying to corner niches of the market which they hope will prove lucrative. Hulu does this with professional content from major TV broadcasters. Vimeo on the other hand is aiming at the budding film makers and artists which want a place to showcase their work away from the unwashed masses on YouTube. The site takes pride in its exclusivity and it has plenty of reason to do so. At the end of the day it still has to make money, so it’s now trying to make its paid accounts more alluring by enabling 1080p videos and several mobile options.

“We want to provide our users with the best possible tools to share their videos,” Andrew Pile, vice president of Product and Development for Vimeo, said in a statement. “We believe the creator should choose how people view their content, which is why we are offering both 1080p streaming and mobile viewing options that Vimeo Plus members can select when uploading their video.”

The first part of the announcement should please both aspiring artists wanting to showcase their work at the highest quality possible, but also subscribers to Vimeo Plus which now get a couple of new perks to justify the $60 a year fee. With the full 1080p resolution, the highest available at this point in the… (read more)

  • A (LEED) Silver Lining: Hilton Garden Inn Gatlinburg

Leading the way for the green evolution for the Hilton Garden Inn franchise, the Hilton Garden Inn Gatlinburg, drawing inspiration at the doorstep of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, has embarked on the fast-track to bring this upscale hotel into the green business movement. Opening in May, 2009, this 118-room hotel is nestled across the street from the rumbling Little Pigeon River in downtown Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and offers a spectacular view of Mount LeConte in the distance, often sculpted by clouds and mist.

The Hilton Garden Inn Gatlinburg offers more than window dressing in terms of their green efforts. That’s why, when the final points are tallied, it will likely earn Silver LEED certification.

A few of their eco-innovations include:

Rainwater retention on site with parking lot pavers, capable of absorbing 100 percent of the rainwater. The pavers were acquired within 500 miles of the site and are non-reflective, reducing the heat island effect.

  • France’s non-high speed railways

Thought this might warrant a thread as all their own French discussions are in their own language. What experiences have you had with the rail system outside of TGVs in France?

I’ve personally travelled on the line from Paris to Limoges (trains run to/from Brive) and didn’t find it amazing. It was something called a Corail Teoz which did 160km/h so it was better than comparable Australian services, but that’s not saying a lot. The timetable was very confusing to understand with all the local TERs thrown it and confusion about which trains run on what days of the week.

The Austerlitz terminus in Paris was pretty ordinary too I thought. Didn’t have the beggars of Gare du Nord but not a very impressive station.

Does anybody know if there are any plans to upgrade that line at all?

  • Barton Biggs: Stock A Safe Haven With Food And Firearms To Protect Against Doomsday Pillagers

    bartonbiggsbb.jpg

MarketWatch has rounded up a few of the more pessimistic preditions about 2010.

A lot recommend buying farmland. Here are the gloomiest:

Former IMF chief economist Simon Johnson warns:

“We’re running out of time … to prevent a true depression.” He says unless we break Wall Street’s “stranglehold” we will be unable prevent the Great Depression 2.

Morgan Stanley research guru turned hedge fund manager Barton Biggs (pictured), who called the market rally, advises that you buy a farm a good distance away from a city and, he advises, make sure that your doomsday safe-haven:

    • Be self-sufficient and capable of growing some kind of food
    • Be well-stocked with seed, fertilizer, canned food, wine, medicine, clothes, etc

And get a gun, he says, because “a few rounds over the approaching brigands’ heads would probably be a compelling persuader that there are easier farms to pillage.”

Mark “Gloom Boom Doom” Faber also recommends buying farmland. Our society has peaked and is on the decline, he says:

“Once a society becomes successful it becomes arrogant, righteous, overconfident, corrupt, and decadent … overspends … costly wars … wealth inequity and social tensions increase; and society enters a secular decline.”

Yikes! Read more 2010 predictions on MarketWatch.

  • Wrongfully Convicted Men Settle Iowa Lawsuit

Two wrongfully convicted men have settled a lawsuit with the Iowa prosecutors who framed them.

Terry Harrington and Curtis McGhee spent 26 years in Iowa prisons for a murder they didn’t commit before their convictions were overturned in 2003. The men have shown on appeal that prosecutors knowingly presented false evidence to secure their convictions, and in 2005 they sued the prosecutors in civil court for their role in the injustice.

On November 4, the US Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case, where prosecutors argued that the men didn’t have the right to sue them, that prosecutors are immune, and that there is no freestanding constitutional “right not to be framed.”

Following the recent announcement that the lawsuit had been settled out of court for $12 million, the Supreme Court announced that it would dismiss the case, since there would no longer be a case to decide. Knowing the current makeup of the Supreme Court and its hostility to criminal defendants, there’s a real chance that these men dodged a bullet by settling the case.

  • ADP Disparity Could Mean Job Growth in Friday’s Government Report

Markets are shrugging off the ADP jobs report showing that private-sector payrolls fell by 84,000 in December, and no wonder.

J.P. Morgan economists point out that over the past year, the number the ADP has reported has been on average 62,000 below Labor Department’s initial private payrolls number, undershooting it 10 of 12 months. In November, ADP first reported a private payrolls loss of 169,000 (revised today to 145,000 private jobs lost), which compared to a loss of just 18,000 in the Labor Department report.

Economists are looking for a loss of 10,000 jobs in Friday’s employment report, but some traders are apparently taking the ADP’s tendency to undershoot as a strong signal that the number could be positive.

ADP doesn’t include government jobs, which are counted in the official tally and could offset private-sector losses. The ADP report also posted the first increase in jobs in the services industry since March 2008, further boosting chances of a positive print in the government data.

  • Family resolutions to live by

stockphotopro_3973738XAW_no_titleThis year I’m resolving not to tell you anything you don’t already know. At risk of sounding like a broken record, I’m going to recommend doing these three things in 2010:

    1.    Eat better
    2.    Get more exercise
    3.    Spend more time together as a family

My guess is that, if I left it at that, we’ll be sitting here next January talking about the same things. Resolutions are often dependent on a turning-over–a-new-leaf mentality that passes when the calendar flips to February and they don’t fit into the reality of our lives (it’s hard to go to the gym every day after work when you have to pick the kids up from daycare and get home to make dinner). We also try to make these changes independently, relying only on ourselves to count calories, get out for a run or schedule a family date-night.

So what if, this year, you make family resolutions instead of personal ones? By picking resolutions that have a direct impact not only on your personal health and well-being, but also on your entire family, you’ll feel more responsible for following through all year and you’ll have the added element of familial peer pressure to keep yourself—and each other—motivated.

Here are three resolutions that could go a long way toward improving your health and happiness, and some practical ideas for making them happen. I’ve broken them down into basic goals you can achieve with small changes to your lives and stretch goals you and your family can shoot for if you’re feeling competitive. Add your own ideas—and it’s totally fine (recommended, even) to change the approaches throughout the year.

    boy appleEat better
I know, you’ve heard this before. But I can’t emphasize enough how important it is; not only are we in the midst of a really scary obesity epidemic, but a healthy diet can help prevent everything from heart disease to cancer and Alzheimer’s. Small steps like these can make a big difference:

    Basic goals:

    • Add one extra serving of fruits or vegetables into everyone’s diet each day. Slice an apple and serve it with breakfast, insist on a few bites of vegetables with dinner, keep baby carrots handy for snacks.
    • Pack lunches and snacks instead of buying them, whenever you can. Start with once a week (doing it the night before makes it easier), and do more as it’s possible.
    • Plan meals together—and shop—as a family. That will make you less likely to get fast food. Again, start with what’s feasible, and work up.
    • Make changes in how you shop. Don’t buy soda. It’s not good for anyone, not even diet soda. Don’t buy chips and other junk food. If it’s in the house, it gets eaten. If it’s not, it doesn’t. Buy less juice (everyone should be having no more than one glass a day), and when you do buy it, make sure it’s 100 percent juice.
    • Check out the American Dietetic Association Web site for more ideas. Talk about them as a family, and pick the ones that are most appealing to you.

    Stretch goals:

    stockphotopro_721325UVR_1000_00_0731_jpgExercise
This is another one that we hear all the time for good reason. Exercise is absolutely crucial to overall health. Here, small steps can make a big difference.

    Basic goals:

    • If it’s possible to walk instead of taking the car (to school, to a playdate, etc) do it.
    • Park the car a little farther away; take the stairs instead of the elevator
    • Do one physical family activity every weekend (roller skating, family swim, walk around the block)
    • Play outside every day. This used to be a childhood routine; it’s not so much anymore, and it’s a huge lost opportunity for exercise. Reinstate it in your family (don’t let weather stop you—jumping in puddles and making snowmen are fun!).
    • Pick some sort of physical activity for each family member—basketball, karate, Zumba, whatever. Try out different things throughout the year.

    Stretch goals:

    • Training for a race together! Lots of races are family-friendly
    • Don’t just try an activity—join a team! There are plenty of options for kids and parents

    stockphotopro_092928kmp_a_chapple_chapplSpend more time together
Stronger relationships go a long way toward preventing stress and depression—and for kids, they can keep them out of trouble, and help them do well in school.

    Basic goals:

    • Have more family dinners (studies show they are great for kids!). Have the kids help you cook.
    • Read bedtime stories (snuggled in bed even better). This isn’t just for little kids; reading chapter books aloud is fun too.
    • Have movie or game nights (stock up on popcorn)
    • Instead of doing chores or watching TV once the kids go to bed, spend a few minutes reconnecting with your spouse.
    • Check out local museums as a family. Let the kids pick. Eat lunch there.

    Stretch goals:

    • Do an activity with one or more of your children, like a book club or an art class
    • Have a weekend mini-“staycation”: spend a night together in a local hotel. Find one with a pool. Go out to a restaurant, swim and watch movies until really late.
    • Institute a weekly family meeting to discuss issues and plans together.

The most important thing with all of these suggestions is to be creative and flexible. If one idea doesn’t work (the kids balk at museums, you don’t like Zumba), try another one. But keep trying. Show your kids (and yourself) that perseverance is possible—and that being healthy and happy is important. That, in and of itself, could make a big difference in everyone’s life—and not just in January.

  • Powermat Throws Out The Cases With New Swappable Batteries For Wireless Charging [Phones]

They stormed their way into our hearts last year, and at CES this week have announced a further line of products, throwing out the $40 cases needed per phone with their new swappable batteries.

Owners of HTC, Blackberry, Nokia, LG, Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson phones no longer need Receiver cases, instead Powermat is offering up batteries which can be inserted into the back of the phone, and charge wirelessly just by sitting on a mat. If you still need a Receiver, they’re now offered in silicone.

The Powermats themselves have been given an overhaul, now coming with enough space for either one, two or three gadgets, conveniently named the Powermat 1X, Powermat 2X and Powermat 3X.

Those Powermats also come in portable sizes for moving between between countries, in single and double options they come with a carrying case and international power plugs.

A charging station for netbooks, called the Powermat 3X Netbook, charges both a netbook and two other gadgets at once. Car owners will rejoice at the news of the Powermat Car Charger, unless of course their car already comes with a charger—or a lighter. No prices or availability deets yet. [Powermat]

  • Test Your Home for Radon

RadonDuring January’s National Radon Action Month, the U.S. Surgeon General and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes for radon.

Radon is a natural radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell or taste but could be present at a dangerous level in your home. As the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. and the first leading cause among non-smokers, radon claims more than 20,000 lives annually. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix it to protect yourself and your family.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is offering a limited amount of free radon test kits to Tennessee citizens. Please mail your request to: Radon Program, 711 R.S. Gass Blvd., Nashville, TN 37216 or email your request to [email protected]. Be sure to include your name, address, city, state and ZIP code.

Cambridge, MA-based Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALNY) said today it has received an undisclosed milestone payment from its partner, Roche, for starting studies that pave the way for clinical trials of a certain drug candidate. The Roche collaboration, formed in July 2007, provided $331 million in upfront cash and equity, and could be worth more than $1 billion over time, Alnylam has said. Analyst Simos Simeonidis of Rodman & Renshaw, in a note to clients, said the milestone is positive because it shows Roche is making progress in developing RNA interference therapies, and it provides some operating cash to Alnylam without diluting the value of its stock.

  • “Nightline” shows off family’s weight loss journey

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to go to a weight maintenance camp, “Nightline” spent most of its January 1st edition looking at an obese mother and son who used a camp to jumpstart their battle against obesity.

    Like mother, like son

Collin Robinson, an 11-year-old fifth grader, says he loves double quarter pounders with cheese, and it shows. He’s clinically obese at five foot eight and 249 pounds. Mom Krista, herself 334 pounds, says she knew she had to make a change for both of them, so she spent $7,900 to send them to a two-week long family weight-loss camp in North Carolina.

Wellspring calls the camp a healthy living immersion, rather than a fat camp.

Krista says as a working single mom she doesn’t have time to cook, and constantly eating fast food and unhealthy snacks brought them to this point.

    Getting immersed in health

The program calls for taking 10,000 steps a day, and each day at the camp involves a two-mile early morning walk. Other fitness activities help kids get in their 10,000 steps, and family aerobics and other activities help families work out together.

The meals provided at the camp are low in fat, and the goal is to consume no more than 800 calories a day. When “Nightline” checked in the options for lunch were a veggie burger or bison sloppy Joe with a side of beans. Participants can also have an unlimited amount of foods like mushrooms, fruit, nonfat yogurt and low-calorie soups.

They weigh all food to keep a strict count of calories and fat consumed. Collin tried the veggie burger and said he’d actually choose it over a cheeseburger.

    Healthy tips for life

Kids also take cooking classes to learn how to make healthy foods themselves like oatmeal and zucchini sticks. Parents get more complicated lessons like baked chicken strips and sweet potato fries.

A field trip to the grocery store helps campers learn how to make healthy substitutions. Collin and Krista find lean meat for burgers and a fat-free brownie mix to satisfy some of their cravings.

    Making progress

After a week of activity and healthy eating, Krista lost 10 pounds and Collin dropped 11. The second week Collin lost 5 more and Krista 6 more, a loss of 16 pounds each in two weeks.

Krista said upon leaving the camp that she felt like they would be successful at home, but she was worried about keeping up with it if they slipped back into old routines.

But when they got home, they read the labels and threw out a ton of food they used to enjoy. Five weeks after camp, Collin had lost 27 pounds and said he was now able to do more activities. Krista lost nearly 33 pounds and called her journey “incredible.”

Collin said he enjoys doing yoga on the WiiFit these days, and he’s proud that his mom is more confident and has more energy. Krista says she loves that she hasn’t had a migraine since being at camp.
