  • PIMCO: How The Government’s Huge Debt Binge Means Corporates Will Rule In 2010

bond supplyAccording to PIMCO’s Mark Kiesel, the key to understanding the bond market this year is to look at relative supply.

Namely, the US government is issuing an insane amount of debt, while corporates are deleveraging and issuing relatively little debt.

Thus we ought to be nervous about the ability of investors to absorb all that Treasury issuance, and confident that investors will snap up what (relatively) little corporate debt there is out there.

Surprisingly, Kiesel likes bank debt, where he still sees value, and precious little new issuance.

    Check out Kiesel’s full presentation — >

  • Rings and Alarms

    – via The New Yorker

The team who come closest to Mosley and Garrett in terms of sonic bravado and melodic grace are C. (Tricky) Stewart and Terius (The-Dream) Nash. Their latest offering is “Single Ladies,” one of two new Beyoncé songs to reach the market simultaneously. As brands go, Beyoncé is still close to a sure bet, and “Single Ladies” shows everyone involved acting unafraid of any market fluctuations. Beyoncé’s vocals unfold over a stomping kick and handclap, as if a clutch of people have formed a ring around her and she’s decided to improvise a song. There are some synthesizer noises but they feel unrelated to anything Beyoncé is singing. When, much later than you expected, there is finally some harmonic information from a keyboard, it is a wobbly, gothic figure that seems to have hopped movies sets. “Today’s Single Ladies” gets temporarily spliced with “Cybertooth 9.” And then the sound goes away—Beyoncé and her lecture are the focus here. This, on acoustic guitar? Not so easy.

Beyoncé, for all her traditional behavior as good-looking good girl, is building a catalogue of songs that have little to do with traditional expressions of love or pain. She is most fond of the second person, and her hits, in the aggregate, form a sort of default advice column. She isn’t as interested in her own pain as she is in telling others what mistakes not to make. I’ve made a small list of her key talking points, reaching back to her work in Destiny’s Child:

“No, No, No”: Be entirely clear with your partner; vague language can lead to confusion and hurt feelings.

“Bills, Bills, Bills”: Money and romance do not mix, so keep separate bank accounts and go Dutch until your relationship is stable.

“Bug-A-Boo”: Constant communication can feel more like harassment than affection.

Read the rest after the jump.

“Say My Name”: If your partner is avoiding you, arrange a face-to-face meeting. Monosyllabic answers and lack of affection can be an indication of deeper troubles.

“Jumpin’, Jumpin’”: Couples do not necessarily need to spend every night together. Plan one night a week where you are with your friends, and he with his.

“Independent Women Part 1”: If you pay for your own shoes, you are more likely to judge your relationship on its own merits rather than as a tallying of goods exchanged. (Get Cameron Diaz to help you count your belongings, if you feel like you’re losing track.)

“Bootylicious”: If you are more experienced than your partner, make sure to be explicit about your needs and expectations. Direct questions will save time and decrease anxiety. (Comfortable jelly levels, for example, should be established early on in any relationship.)

“Check On It”: If a man shows sustained interested, allow him to get close to you over dinner, or a movie. Leave your options open. If he has a friend, perhaps invite him along; the friend can act as a control group for the evening.

“Ring The Alarm”: Fights are not always unhealthy. Sometimes, a blowout can be cathartic and release pressure that might be damaging your ability to communicate. Introduce a sense of play into your arguments—megaphones are fun (make sure your neighbors are familiar with your routine, and don’t call the police), and role-playing can help defuse anger with humor.

“Irreplaceable”: If your ex is having trouble finding his way out of the house, provide clear and consistent directions. Men are sometimes challenged by the word “straight,” which has sexual overtones. Suggest that he go left or right, terms familiar from both baseball and driving. Also, keep several empty boxes on hand. (Once broken down flat, boxes can fit horizontally into a closet or under a leaky houseplant.)

“Freakum Dress”: Be sure you own at least one freakum dress. If you find one you really like, consider buying several of them in different colors. (Make sure you have a friend who can explain what a freakum dress is.)

“Single Ladies”: If a man values your relationship, be prepared to demand a commitment. Suggest that he signal the value of his commitment by buying you an enormous piece of jewelry, something big enough to kill a hamster with one mild blow.

    Starting at 2:55:

    • Anadarko is an interesting play given that it offers both U.S. and international exposure, especially in Africa, both in oil and gas.
    • Long-term share price performance has been strong vs. the S&P500.
    • APC intelligently used its natural gas cash cow to get into oil big time.

Remember VIZIO’s LED backlit 55-inch XVT LCD with WiFi and widgets that debuted for two grand last year and seemed like such a value? Great, now go ahead and forget it because the company’s top of the line model in August will switch over to a monster 72-inch 480Hz LCD (above) with 3D, WirelessHD, VIZIO Internet Apps widget platform and Wireless-N for $3,499. If that’s too big to fit your budget (or in our case, tiny shoebox apartment) there will also be 55- and 47-inch versions available, with all the same features plus a new antireflective panel for those of you who like to keep the lights on during, they’ll cost $2,499 and $1,999, respectively. These 3D displays feature SENSIO technology and Bluetooth-synchronized active shutter LCD glasses from XpanD, while a VIZIO XVT Pro Wireless HDMI Adapter is available separately with 4 HDMI inputs to blast HD signals across the room on the 60Ghz band. Cinema enthusiasts also have something to look forward to, check the gallery below for shots of the 58-inch ultrawidescreen 21:9 aspect ratio XVTPRO580CD, no word on a ship date or price but when it appears later this year you can kiss black bars during movies goodbye. We’re sure we’ll see more models from VIZIO before CES is out for the smaller, less 3D friendly homes, but right now it doesn’t look like the company plans on giving up its LCD sales crown anytime soon — these combinations of features and pricing may prove very difficult to say no to. PR with other details is after the break.

Eye-Fi just busted out at CES with its next generation WiFi-enabled SD card, the Eye-Fi Pro X2. The big features of the new 8GB Class 6 SD card are 802.11n support and the Endless Memory mode, which automatically clears photos and videos as they’re uploaded to your machine over WiFi, and there are also some new sharing options in the mix, as well as geotagging support. No word on a ship date, but it’s up for pre-order on Amazon and other retailers now for $149. Eye-Fi is also launching its new Eye-Fi Center software, which should make managing media delivered from Eye-Fi cards a little simpler — it’ll be out later this month. • Pure bursts onto US scene with five internet radios

Pure’s always had a knack for crafting elegant, oftentimes unorthodox looking radios. Problem is (at least for you Yanks), they’ve been marketed and sold exclusively across the pond. In our humble opinion, there’s no better time to change that than here at the International Consumer Electronics Show, and sure enough, Pure is making itself known on the US radar with five distinct WiFi radios. Up first is the flagship product shown above (dubbed the Sensia), which boasts a 5.7-inch touchscreen, an oval enclosure and access to the Pure Lounge — a nifty little portal that taps into internet radio stations, Twitter and Facebook. You’ll also find an auxiliary input jack and a $349 price tag, which is only topped in this lineup by the $449 Sirocco 550. Said system is much like a mini boombox, complete with the typical WiFi radio capabilities, a USB socket, iPhone / iPod compatibility, a CD player and an SD expansion slot. Moving on, there’s the $139 Siesta Flow alarm clock radio, the $249 Oasis Flow — which just so happens to be both rugged and waterproof — and the $229 Evoke Flow that originally surfaced back in 2008. Details on actual US availability is expected to come later, though the full press releases can be found after the break right this very moment.

PS3 hack plays Blu-ray backups, should send Motorstorm values soaring (video)
The PS3 has thus far proven to be something a tough nut to crack for those wanting to play backups on non-modified consoles, but word on the web is that a technique has been found that will make it possible — if the stars happen to align properly for your hardware configuration. What you need is a PS3 model capable of running Linux, Ubuntu, Windows XP on top of that, a suite of utilities, a copy of the original Motorstorm, and a Blu-ray burner. Get all that configured properly and you should be able to use the technique at the read link to play those copies of games that have thus far been expensive coasters. Given the complexity of this approach we can’t be 100 percent sure it’s legit, but for what it’s worth there is video “proof” after the break, and should you attempt this feat of hackery yourself please do let us know how you get on.

  • Gabon, under new regime, trims fat out of lunch

Gabon, under new regime, trims fat out of lunch

    Quote:

    Reuters

By Linel Kwatsi Linel Kwatsi – Mon Jan 4, 1:47 pm ET

LIBREVILLE (Reuters) – Gabonese workers reluctantly gave up their traditional two-hour lunch breaks as of Monday under a government plan to increase productivity and help diversify the central African country’s oil-driven economy.

"A 30-minute lunch break is too short," civil servant Maurice Koumba, 30, grumbled on the first day of the new regime instituted by President Ali Ben Bongo, who won the election to succeed his long-ruling late father.

With 2010 output growth projected at a mere 2.6 percent, compared to the 10 percent annual growth the government is targeting, Bongo, whose election pledge was to promote an "Emerging Gabon," has set his sights on trimming a heavily bloated civil service and encouraging enterprise to diversify.

Under the new government ruling, the working day starts at 7:30 a.m. local time and ends at 3:30 p.m., an early finish to compensate for the loss of the generous two-hour lunch break common to francophone African countries, when shops and businesses routinely close.

"A break of 30 minutes will be taken, according to the appropriate rhythm of work, between 1130 and 1330," the directive said.

Previously, work started later in the morning, and, after returning from lunch, employees would leave at around 6 p.m.

Private companies and government agencies must conform to the timetable, but some professions say they should be exempt.

"It’s difficult for lawyers to stop working in the afternoon if they have a court hearing," barrister Jean Rémy Bantsantsa said.

A meeting between officials and business leaders will be held on Monday to discuss how the ruling, which was made public in late December, will be applied in practice.

Bongo is in a race against time to come up with new sources of revenue for Gabon, one of the few sub-Saharan countries to have successfully launched a Eurobond.

Initial steps to root out corruption, cap the salaries of the chiefs of state corporations and slim the size of a civil service have won plaudits.

While the impact of the new ruling on productivity is unclear, some welcomed the earlier end to the working day.

"It’s a good decision," said Yves Pambo, 32, another civil servant. "It will allow us to spend time with our families, to visit our parents, and to launch small businesses."

    Toyota Etios Concept

Ready to take on emerging markets, Toyota today unveiled its new Etios concept at the 10 Auto Expo New Delhi Show. The concept, which Toyota says is 90 percent ready, will go into production and will be available for sale in India at the end of this year.

Based on an all-new platform, the Etios will be available in both hatch and sedan body styles. While many may think that this is Toyota’s competitor to the Tata Nano – it’s not. The Etios will cost around $10,000 meaning it will go head-to-head with on of India’s best-selling vehicles, the Maruti Swift.

Power will come from two engine options including a 1.2L and a 1.5L DOHC gasoline engines. Plans for a diesel engine have been put on hold for now.

Toyota said it will also sell the Etios in Russia and South America. Sales are targeted at 70,000 units for India in the first year.

  • Using Web Tools to Control Legal Bills [Voices]

By Nathan Koppel, Reporter, The Wall Street Journal

It is a challenging time for corporate law firms. The recession has shrunk legal budgets, and big clients are increasingly pressing lawyers to provide the same level of service at a reduced cost.

Rarely known for their technological savvy, law firms are nonetheless turning to technology to try to address clients’ cost concerns. Some are rolling out budgeting tools to keep better tabs on expenses. Others are using software to automate tasks.

“Firms are starting to recognize that clients are not willing to pay for a custom-made suit when all they really need are jeans and a t-shirt,” says Jeffrey Carr, the general counsel of FMC Technologies Inc., a Houston-based oil services and technology firm.

One longtime gripe about law firms is that their costs are hard to predict. Typically, firms bill by the hour, and they often are hard-pressed, at the inception of a matter, to estimate how many hours they will take to complete assignments.

The device will feature a Google Android-based platform with full Web browsing capabilities, Wi-Fi connectivity, audio and video playback and image viewing in a variety of formats. The Alex eReader will also be able to run a number of Android apps.

The Alex eReader boasts a 6” EPD (Electronic Paper Display) screen which allows users to browse the Web in full color while simultaneously searching for and reading digital books. Users can thus click on hyperlinks within online books that lead to relevant information or multimedia content found online in order to enrich their reading experience. EPUB digital books can be searched and downloaded using Google API applications provided by Alex’s eReader.

Spring Design made headlines late last year when it sued Barnes & Nobles for alleged infringement by stealing trade secrets and copying features from the Alex eReader for its Nook product. Google, meanwhile, is still caught up in litigation with authors and publishers over its Book Search product, although preliminary approval of a settlement was reached on November 19, 2009.
