  • I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World by Eve Ensler, foreword by Carol Gilligan

As the mother of a teenage girl (and too-soon-to-be-teenage son, too, egads!), I vacillate constantly between nervous fear and proud elation. My daughter is a miracle in so many ways … as soon as she was able to speak (full sentences by 11 months, this wonderchild), the one reply I taught her early was “and I’m smart and strong, too!” for every time someone told her how cute, adorable, pretty, gorgeous she was (and, and of course, still is). And the words were made true. She is all of the above – and then some. She is, after all, an emotional creature …

Eve Ensler became an international force by giving voice to – no other way to say it – vaginas. Her defining one-woman show, The Vagina Monologues, was vaginal empowerment personified. She created V-Day, “a global movement to end violence against women and girls,” and has raised more than $70 million towards that cause.

In her latest creation, Ensler takes on the emotional lives of girls all over the world. “You are one of our greatest natural resources,” she directly addresses the ‘dear emotional creatures.’ “You possess a necessary agency and energy that if unleashed could transform, inspire, and heal the world.” What a rallying peace-cry!

With her signature frankness, Ensler gives voice to the nervous wannabe who doesn’t know what true friendship means, the pregnant teenager who doesn’t know how to tell her mother, a young girl discovering she’s not gay-not straight-she’s “Stephanied,” and a battered fan begging Rihanna to take back her Chris who still loves her even “after one bad thing.”

Out in the world beyond status symbol allure and privileged starvation and self-mutilation, Ensler finds a hopeless prostitute who is nothing more than “only flesh,” a kidnapped rape victim who will take her baby when she flees “because deep down you know she is yours,” a would-be suicide bomber who turns away from making “more missing pieces,” a factory worker mechanically assembling Barbie dolls who reveals that Barbie “feels bad about all the girls who are starved to make her and are starving to be like her,” and a village girl who refuses to be sold to an old man for “five cows and a calf.”

Ensler opens with a disturbingly questioning “You Tell Me How to Be a Girl in 2010,” and ends with a galvanizing and empowering “Epilogue: Manifesta to Young Women and Girls,” that clearly outlines “Here’s What You Will Be Told:” and answers with a defying “Here’s What I’m Telling You.” Girls – and their mothers – need to listen … and then be heard.

This summer, Ensler heads to Poughkeepsie for the Powerhouse theater festival (brought to you by Vassar and NY Stage and Film) to give livetime voice to her emotional creatures. Her work culminates with a free reading the weekend of July 30 to August 1 … mark your calendars. We should all be so lucky to bear witness …

  • AT&T increases ETF for smartphones and netbooks

Engadget is reporting that AT&T has raised its early termination fees on "more advanced, higher end devices" for new customers, as spelled out in an open letter the company drafted.   The ETF has shot up to $325 when a new two-year contract is created around one of those highly-subsidized smartphones or notebooks folks never want to pay full price for, and gradually decreases by $10 for each month that customer stays with the company.  This move comes not too long after Verizon Wireless enacted a similar ETF hike to the tidy sum of $350. Sprint still offers its customers the best deal of the big 3, allowing them to upgrade every 12 months once they reach "premier" status and holding an ETF over them of only $200.

Does this news affect the decision making process of those of you who are looking to pick up a Pre Plus or a Pixi Plus on AT&T?  Or, since its starting to become standard business practice, will it be business as usual for you?

  • Will Trichet Let A Deflationary Depression Happen So He Can’t Be Accused Of Bailing Out Greece?

    trichet

An interesting observation from Tim Duy at Economist’s View (via Ryan Avent)

The European Central Bank, in particular, should be working more aggressively to counter deflationary pressures internally. But, alas, policymakers don’t want to be seen as bailing out weaker members for fear of losing credibility. One of the cut of your nose to spite your face situations.

    This makes sense.

Trichet is super-sensitive to any charge that he’s sacrificing the independence of the ECB, or the strength of the euro, in order to save weaker countries like Greece. He’s even going around explaining how quantitative easing isn’t quantitative easing.

On the other hand, a full-on, explicit monetization scheme could be just what it takes to really get the wheels in motion for Germany to quit the whole project. Maybe he’s just looking further down the road.

A we reported last year, BK has been testing real pork ribs in several markets and has now decided to go ahead with the nationwide roll out. Yes, this summer you will be able to get actual ribs on an actual bone at a Burger King.

    From the press release:

“Fall-off-the-bone ribs and summer go hand-in-hand, and now we are excited to be the first national fast food hamburger restaurant to offer our guests an authentic bone-in rib menu offering,” said John Schaufelberger, senior vice president, global product marketing and innovation, Burger King Corp.

“Our guests’ initial reaction to this product has exceeded our expectations, further validating the BURGER KING(R) system’s investment in our new game-changing broiler. Because of this proprietary cooking technology, we’ve been able to up the ante in our product development across the board, and BK(TM) Fire-Grilled Ribs are just the beginning of the innovative product line we can offer with this new cooking platform.”

Honestly, this sounds like a bunch of horsesh*t, but we found a picture and they do look pretty tasty. Then again, it seems that the picture is from some sort of press event.

  • Sony Ericsson USA Headquarters Coming To Atlanta In July

Sony Ericsson has officially signed the new lease for its new Americas headquarters in Atlanta. The office, located in the Terminus 200 Building in the Buckhead section of Atlanta, will be the hub for the company’s regional operations in North America and Latin America as it delivers an exciting new portfolio of phones to the marketplace.

Approximately 180 employees will be based in the facility, including executive teams, sales and marketing staff, and operations. The company’s regional headquarters facilities were formerly located in Research Triangle Park, N.C. and Miami, FL. The support that Sony Ericsson received from both the state and local economic development teams helped facilitate the decision to relocate to Atlanta. Since Sony Ericsson’s operator partner AT&T is based in Atlanta, there will also be opportunities for stronger collaboration.

“Atlanta is an ideal location for Sony Ericsson’s new regional headquarters, and we look forward to immersing ourselves in this vibrant community,” said Anderson Teixeira, president of Sony Ericsson Region Americas. “Access to impressive office space and a diverse pool of talent, combined with close proximity to AT&T, and easy access to Latin America, make Atlanta an obvious choice for relocation. This move will also encourage even stronger collaboration with our partners as we launch innovative and exciting new products in this market.”

“Sony Ericsson’s arrival in Georgia epitomizes our state’s emergence as a base for technology innovation,” said Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue. “We are excited that a leader in mobile technology is creating a significant number of jobs to generate opportunities for the Atlanta region’s strong pipeline of talent for the technology sector.”

Sony Ericsson was represented in the transaction by Jones Lang LaSalle working with Cousins Properties, Inc. to complete the terms of the lease for the company’s new headquarters. Terminus 200, owned by Cousins in partnership with Morgan Stanley, is a 25-story, 564,000-square-foot tower of Class A office space, retail, and restaurant space located at the intersection of Peachtree and Piedmont roads in the Buckhead office submarket.

  • 20,000 Runners Joined the Fargo Marathon

The Fargo Marathon, now on it’s 6th year is one of the best marathons in the United States.

This year, ten times as many runners are registered for the Fargo Marathon 2010. According to Mark Knutson, director of Fargo Marathon, more than 20,000 runners had registered for the event when you take into account all the races. Friday’s 5-kilo run had about 6,500 runners and in 2005 the first Fargo Marathon only had 2,271. For now, 2,200 runners have signed up to run the full marathon.

Fargo first hosted the “Scheels All Sports Run for the Children Half Marathon” in May 2002. With 300 runners, it was already considered a huge race. After three years of the Half Marathon, Fargo jumped to a full marathon with over 2,400 participants. Every year participants in the Fargo Marathon increase that’s why it received the Runner’s World Reader’s Choice Award as the #1 Best Value Marathon in America.

The 2010 Fargo Marathon happens at the Fargodome. It is also the place to pick up packets, register, eat, join the terrific expo, listen to awesome speakers, and of course, start and end the race.

  • Major Accident for India in a Decade: Air India Plane Crash

About 158 people died from the crash of Air India Express in southern India and 8 people survived the plane crash.

The plane just burst into flames after overshooting a table-top runway and plunging into the forest below according to Reuters. The plane was crashed after landing in Southern India particularly in the city of Mangalore on a flight from Dubai. There were even television images that showed the flames coming from the plane, which was eventually crashed after it landed. Many rescue workers and volunteers run their way to the area of incident and tried to look if there were any survivors. Luckily, there were eight people who survived. Some of these survivors had burn injuries.

One survivor stated that he managed to jump out of the plane that was caught on fire before landing. As the plane went through the trees, that’s the time he went out and jump off.

There were 166 people on board of the plane including six crew members, and even children. It is a sad fact for India, that most of these passengers were Indians. The crash was an accident as officials say. V.P. Agarwal, chairman of Air India Express also stated “As per our information available, there was no distress signal from the pilot, that means between pilot and air traffic communication, there was no indication of any problem reported by him,”

The main focus is on rescue operations as stated by Air India official Anup Srivastasva. The plane crash is the first major accident for India in a decade.

  • 7 Reasons The Fed Won’t Be Moving Rates For A Long Time

    Ben Bernanke

From Cumberland Advisors’ Bob Eisenbeis comes some good analysis of this week’s Fed minutes, and its announcement that it wouldn’t be selling MBS until after its first rate hike.

In addition to the MBS sale timing, he notes the last time the Fed hiked rates since it started publishing minutes was in 1994, after a considerable period of very solid growth numbers. Plus, Eisenbeis argues, the Fed has come up with tools to stave off inflation beyond just rate hikes:

Putting this all together, there are a number of factors that indicate that the Fed’s exit strategy won’t begin for some time.  First, the real economy, while recovering, is still not fully recovered, nor is there an indication that we are on a path typical of most recoveries.  Second, and more importantly, the jobs situation and unemployment rate are at levels where a sudden rise in interest rates might risk choking off the expansion. Third, there are no pending signs of inflation that might justify moving rates.  Fourth, market uncertainties remain large and are unlikely to settle down until the problems in Europe show signs of being resolved.  Fifth, we are about to embark upon an election season, the public is angry at Washington in general, and the new appointees to the Board of Governors are unlikely to support preemptive interest-rate increases until after the election.  Sixth, while the FOMC may have settled upon most likely strategies to shrink its balance sheet and tactics to temporarily idle excess bank reserves, the plans have not been finalized and they are likely to take some time to implement, should the FOMC decide to pursue a gradual change in the language of the statement, to prepare markets for a move, and finally to implement a gradual increase in interest rates.  Lastly, while strategies and tactics have been identified, the issue of timing or the trigger events have not been made public.

All of these factors suggest that rates are likely to remain low through the end of this year and well into next year.  This may bode well for equities and other risk assets, notwithstanding the recent correction that has hit the markets.

  • Some Skin Lightening Creams Are Full Of Banned Mercury

The Chicago Tribune bought 50 creams used to lighten skin and fade age spots and had them sent to an outside lab for testing — and got troubling results. Six of the creams were found to contain amounts of mercury banned by federal law. Five of the creams had enough of the toxic metal to cause kidney damage over time, the Tribune reports.

Now the FDA has agreed to investigate the issue in response to the Tribune’s investigation.

“We didn’t know there was that kind of a risk, and we believe now there is a level of risk,” FDA spokesman Ira Allen said. “We are going to follow up.”

    From the Tribune:

Mercury is banned in skin-bleaching or lightening creams. The metal blocks production of melanin, which gives skin its pigmentation. But mercury can be rapidly absorbed through the skin and cause severe health effects, including neurological and kidney damage.

Ellen Silbergeld, a professor of environmental health science at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, said she was troubled by the high amounts of mercury found by the Tribune. “It’s highly appropriate that (the FDA) take action,” she said.

  • Government, slavery, Jim Crow, The New York Times

    Michael Giberson

The New York Times ran an editorial on the election of Rand Paul called the “Limits of Libertarianism.”  I haven’t been paying much attention to Paul’s campaign or related politics, so don’t comment on Paul’s views or the Times response to them.  But I have to draw attention to for the purpose of publicly ridiculing one of the Times final sentences, which contrasts government power against a peculiar view of free markets:

It was only government power that ended slavery and abolished Jim Crow, neither of which would have been eliminated by a purely free market.

Should we give government power credit for ending slavery in the 1860s when government power had been supporting slavery for more than a century before?  How long would slavery have persisted in the United States had the government not used its power to endorse and protect it?  And what is this queer notion of a “purely free market” in which some people can legally assault other people, deprive them of their liberty, and sell them into slavery?  I had imagined that such slavery could not exist in a purely free market.

Should we give government power credit for ending Jim Crow, when Jim Crow attitudes were turned by state and local governments into laws that used government power to force segregation?  How long did it take the Times‘ lauded (federal) government power to overcome the use of (state and local) government power imposing segregation requirements?  In what vision of a “purely free market” can the government tell a business that it must segregate its customers by race?

    Idiocy.

  • Pacquiao-Mayweather fight imminent

Philippines’ pride and six time world boxing champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao granted Floyd Mayweather, Jr. what he has been asking for: 14-days cut-off random blood test. During the last negotiation, reports has it 14 days cut-off for Mayweather, while 24 days for Pacquaio. Negotiations may have been unfolding right after the announcement since both fighters, more than anyone else, want this fight unless there would be more “excuses” or conditions along the way. For the moment, this much anticipated fight has not reached an irrevocable agreement yet, and unfortunately there are conditions that may hinder or prolong the deal.

Given there is random blood test, Examiner pointed out it is not as serious as the money and pay-per-view involved. Mayweather, continued the commentary, agreed to the cut-off but has changed his mind to a full random test after beating Mosley. About 1.4 million pay-per-views were sold, the biggest recorded sale for a non-heavyweight fight. This scenario gives Mayweather the advantage of splitting the pot in his favor. In short, the stake for the coming fight has grown bigger.

Another commentary, however, sees the test as the major issue suggesting an alternative: have USADA representatives guard each fighter less than ten feet away all the time. If they “hide” they better give out samples. A drug test is usually recommended after each fight.

In the end, it is in the hands of the authorities and not mere speculations. There is a proper venue to make things straight once and for all.

  • Fargo Marathon 2010: Hot or Cold?

    fargoThursday

It has been announced that on the day that the marathon will take place, there would be a huge possibility of a thundershower.

The cloudy sky will help  the runners enjoy the event and will also provide relief to the runners. There would be no need to worry about the hot and sticky weather.

     Friday

The weather forecast this friday gave a possibility that there would be a thunderstorm during the 2010 Fargo Marathon but expected cloud cover will help keep temperatures down.

WDAY meteorologist John Wheeler stated that, “I think we’re catching a break, because of widespread shower activity out west (on Friday night), I think it will stay overcast a dood chunk of the morning and that definitely keeps things cooler.”

The temperature on University Drive near the Fargodome will be in the low 60s.

“It will quickly warm up to the 70s as runners gather at the starting line, but I think we may keep it out of the 80s until later in the afternoon.”

Dew points in the low 50s in the morning so humidity is also not expected to be a problem.

Winds looked to be strong and gusty for the race earlier in the week should also be under control during the marathon. Wheeler said a southeast wind of between 10 to 20 mph will be the normal.

Unfortunately the wvolving weather pattern that will hit the Red River Valley this Friday could pose a thunderstorm risk at any time.

    Saturday

WDAY meteorologist Daryl Ritchison said the temperature at the start of the race would be the warmest temperature during the fargo marathon yet.

Runners are advised to prepare for the marathon’s hot temperature: drink plenty of fluids, dress appropriately, wear sunscreen and don’t expect to run a personal record.

The Fargo Marathon has a flag system at every aid station to warn runners of a heat problem. A yellow means caution, red warns the runners of heat dangers and black shuts down the entire course.

  • 13-year Old Teenager: Youngest Mountaineer to Climb the Mt. Everest

jordan romeroJordan Romero, a 13-year old boy, had set a record as the youngest mountaineer to climb the Mt. Everest, the highest peak on Earth, on Saturday. This record was previously recognized to Temba Tsheri, a 16-year-old boy from Nepal.

Jordan Romero is from California, U.S.A. According to some reports, he had already climbed a few mountains when he was younger. He had already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, which can be found in Africa, and Mount Kosciuszko in Australia.

Romero, a teenager with curly hair, was inspired by a painting that is hanging in his school which features the highest peaks of world’s seven continents. In earlier posts on his blog, he had talked of one of his dream and had stated that his every step was taking him towards the ‘biggest goal’. That is to climb and stand on the top of the world.

During this event, he was accompanied by his father, his father’s girlfriend and other three more guides. He started his journey on the left side of the Mt. Everest from the Chinese side. There is no age limit for the climbers when they register to the Chinese authority. Unlike in Nepal, where 16 years old would likely the minimum age requirement for the climbers.

  • Federal Debt As A Percent Of GDP — By President!

On Tuesday, I showed a chart of National Debt by President. Several readers said a more informative chart would include control of Congress.

Enter Doug Short — he directed me towards that exact chart — including party control of Congress.

My only disagreement with Doug is he blames “spending.” I think that is half right — anything that is unfunded — spending, tax cuts, wars, entitlements — should be blamed for the Debt. You can allocate government revenues however you like — but allocating for any usage beyond revenues is how you create debt.

Regardless, the chart is quite fascinating [click chart to see bigger interactive version]:

  • Curried Salmon Salad

salmonsalad1For busy college students like Amy McMillin , easy-to-prepare meals that make the most out of a limited food budget are a necessity. “I like to make salads with fewer ingredients using unique combinations,” Amy told us, which is how she came up with her recipe for Curried Salmon Salad submitted for the Primal Blueprint Reader-Created Cookbook.

Salmon, lettuce, avocado, slivered almonds and green onions mixed with the complexity and bold flavors of an array of ground spices – garam masala, turmeric, coriander, cumin, cinnamon and cayenne – makes this a delicious Primal dish.

Dried spices stay flavorful and aromatic for up to a year (even when stored in a dorm room) and are an economical way to punch up the flavor in just about anything you cook. If you want to make this salad even simpler, buy only the garam masala, which is an Indian spice blend that often includes the other five spices in this recipe plus cloves, cardamom, fennel, mace or nutmeg. The benefit of using all the spices instead of just garam masala, however, is that you can customize the flavor. Love to feel the burn? Then don’t hold back on the cayenne or garam masala. Does spicy food make you cry? Then cumin, coriander and cinnamon are your friends. Amy blends the spices with coconut milk for a quick and easy dressing. She also uses them to lightly season the salmon.

Pan-frying the salmon in coconut oil gives the fish a crispy, almost caramelized coating. We recommend searing it on both sides, first skin side up for 4-6 minutes, then after adding a little more oil, flip the fish and keep it in the pan until the skin is crispy. When the salmon cools, toss it in a bowl with all the other ingredients. Or, do what Amy does when she’s taking her Curried Salmon Salad to go: simply throw everything into a Tupperware container and shake well before eating.

    Servings: 1

    Ingredients:

    ingredients 32

    • 1 4-6oz salmon fillet (for college students without a kitchen or anyone on a tight budget, consider using canned salmon instead)
    • 1/2- 1 tablespoon coconut oil (for cooking fresh salmon)
    • 2 cups romaine lettuce, shredded
    • 1/2 avocado, cut into chunks
    • 2 tablespoon sliced or slivered almonds
    • 2-3 tablespoon chopped green onions

    Dressing:

    spices 1

    • 2-3 tablespoons coconut milk (or more, depending on how much dressing you like on your salad)
    • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
    • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
    • 1/2 teaspoon coriander
    • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
