  • Green Spaces Provide Great Economic Potential

Guest author Jack Lundee of Everything Left provides us with this thoughtful and thought-provoking article on green spaces, green architecture and green infrastructure.

The addition and/or substitution of green spaces have been quite controversial topics as of late. Senior resident of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Ed T. McMahon states: “Green space adds value to property.” Not only do these areas of conservation drive economic trends upward, but they also improve the overall health of the surrounding community. For example, substituting things like golf courses with conservation areas would essentially increase surrounding property value while diminishing overpriced maintenance fees. The same holds true for airports and other large acre-eating developments.

  • There Will Be No Verizon Nexus One

If you’ve been waiting for the Nexus One to finally hit Verizon’s network, you can stop and take Google’s advice and get an Incredible. I don’t know if this is just a temporary setback or if they are scrapping plans altogether to bring the Nexus to VZ network but looks like it will not be available anytime soon.

Back in January when the Nexus was introduced, everyone on every network wanted to get their hands on one. The Nexus has made its way to most of the major carriers in the US except the biggest, Verizon. This is really odd because Verizon was one of the original partners at launch. Maybe VZ doesn’t want it to interfere with their in house “Droid” line of Android devices? Or, maybe the aforementioned problems some people have experienced with the Nexus scared them off? It’s possible that it may be available at a later date but nobody knows for sure. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this one plays out.

  • Do knowledge workers burn more cerebral calories?

Our brains burn a lot of the calories we eat [1]. So are knowledge workers working out?

    Alas, probably not …

Appraising the brain’s energy budget (PNAS 2002)

… In the average adult human, the brain represents about 2% of the body weight. Remarkably, despite its relatively small size, the brain accounts for about 20% of the oxygen and, hence, calories consumed by the body (1). This high rate of metabolism is remarkably constant despite widely varying mental and motoric activity…

Later articles suggest that while brains use a lot of calories, and are thus a very expensive evolutionary development, they don’t use the calories for thinking. Brain calories are primarily consumed in “intrinsic activites” unrelated to environmental stimulus — presumably maintenance functions of some sort.

So we knowledge workers don’t get any caloric credit for thinking, and since we usually think while sitting (very bad) we’re really pro blubber.

[1] We also know human brains are smaller and probably more efficient than they used to be. Of course, so are computers.

Update: I suppose memory formation might be energy intensive, so maybe forming more memories could burn calories?

  • Who Needs Parenting When Your ISP Uses The British Film Classification System?

A UK ISP has teamed up with the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to create a new parental control and filtering system that’s based on the same classification system being used by the UK film industry. UK Wireless ISP Tibboh uses internet filter technology created by Netsweeper to classify websites under the BBFC’s rating system (U, PG, 12, 15 or 18). Facebook and Twitter are given a “12” rating (only suitable for those over twelve), Blogger and WordPress sites are given a “15” rating, while major news outlets are given a “U” certificate (suitable for everyone). The idea seems like a fusion of a bunch of ineffective and bad ideas. It’s based on Internet filters that, of course, will block some useful content, but which kids will be able to bypass anyway. The filter system adds a new wrinkle by pretending it’s possible to assign a valuable age restriction metric to information delivery platforms — as if your kid couldn’t possibly run into something foul via Twitter, in a blog, or in the news. The service provides the illusion of safety to people who’d rather pay twenty Pounds a month than pay attention to what their kids are doing — or talk to them face to face about smart technology use.

  • HTC HD2 to join Korean “anti-iPhone front”

    100426_p10_SK

SK Telecom's new smartphone additions to counter KT's iPhone

The iPhone has been a quiet success in South Korea, selling around 500,000 units in 4 months on the smaller KT carrier there.  SK Telecom, who dominates the cell phone market there, is however not taking this lying down, and has promised to introduce a slew of attractive devices, including the HTC HD2.

Samsung, Korea’s biggest cell phone company, has taken KT’s adoption of the iPhone rather personally, and has withdrawn the supply of new handsets to the carrier, and even stopped supporting current handsets there, for example not releasing a Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for the Samsung T*Omnia, called the Show Omnia on that network, where it only sold 40,000, while doing joint promotions for the same handset on SK Telecom, where the T*Omnia sold 470 000.

“The Show Omnia is an illegitimate son who can’t call his father, father,” said KT’s Chairman Lee Suk-chae, using the old Korean folklore of Hong Gil-dong, the Joseon Kingdom equivalent of Robin Hood, as a metaphor.

Despite iPhone’s popularity, SK Telecom still has a larger number of smartphone customers thanks to its vast line-up of premium handsets, and Samsung seems hell bent on assuring that things stay that way.

Since it released the iPhone in November last year, KT admits it has been experiencing “serious difficulties” trying to add wealth to its smartphone line-up, with Samsung Electronics and other major vendors channelling their products through SK Telecom. SK Telecom is said to have no plans to release the iPhone.

  • Thailand pro-government ‘yellow shirts’ call for martial law to end protests

[JURIST] Thailand’s pro-government People’s Alliance for Democracy Network, known as “yellow shirts,” called Monday for a declaration of martial law to quell the anti-government movement spearheaded by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, or “red shirts.” The statement comes after over a month of conflict in Bangkok that has left more than 25 dead and nearly 1,000 injured in connection with increasingly violent anti-government protests. After an attack Sunday on a former premier’s home left 11 people injured, the reds dug into their fortified bunker in Bangkok in anticipation of government retaliation. Yellow shirt representatives have said that if the government will not crack down on the reds, the group is prepared to take action itself.
Last week, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced that he is prepared to negotiate with red shirt protesters once they cease their illegal conduct. Thai courts have recently issued arrest warrants for several high-profile protesters, including high-ranking officials of the red shirt opposition, in connection with violent protests and an alleged break-in at Parliament. Internal divisions have been mounting steadily in Thailand since the 2006 ouster of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose progressive policies engendered the support of the poor rural class that largely constitutes the reds today. The yellows, primarily consisting of the urban middle-class, considered Shinawatra, and as well as the reds, disloyal to the monarchy. Because of the mounting violence, Abhisit has imposed a state of emergency in Bangkok and neighboring provinces.

  • Oil drilling hits 19-year high

Persistent weakness in the price of natural gas coupled with continued strength in oil has producers focusing more on liquid-rich targets.

Since the trough in mid-2009, the U.S. rig count has risen by 625. Additions of oil-focused rigs have accounted for 53% of the increase and now make up 35% of the total.

“This trend is expected to persist for the balance of 2010 given the expectation for continued weakness in gas prices and strong economics in oil-prone basins,” analysts at UBS said in research note.

While they ar cautious that the gas rig count may soon recede from its highs, oil drilling is expected to pick up most of the slach. As a result, the U.S. rig count is likely to remain range-bound in the second half of 2010.
