  • Will Google Go After Flash Developers Next?

We’ve learned over the last few days that Google is proactively seeking Apple developers, attempting to woo them with free phones.  Not a bad strategy if you can afford to toss a few hundred bucks at each person you want.  Now that the platform is established and super phones are coming out all the time, Google no longer has to worry about developers taking the “wait and see” approach. Rather, Google is now taking the “who else can we get?” approach.

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s been a pretty heated spat going on between Apple and Adobe over the iPhone’s refusal to allow Flash.  Both companies have been twisting the words of the opposition to help justify their respective stances.

While it may very well be true that HTML 5 is the future of web,  the fact is that Flash is what works today.  It may be a few years before HTML crosses the tipping point and Flash becomes the minority.  Refusing to allow for Flash on the iPhone is like General Motors  refusing to use unleaded gasoline because bio-fuels and electricity are the future.  I believe Apple is shooting themselves in the foot with this long term play.  I also believe that Google recognizes this and is buddying up to Adobe for what may end up being a short (hop term relationship.

Adobe recently started offering beta signups for of a couple of their apps and service for Android.  We’ve heard that Flash 10.1 will be supported on nearly all Android devices going forward.  I think the chances are very good that we’ll see some sort of early look at some Android/Adobe apps at next month’s Google I/O conference.  Last year saw sneak previews of some Android features that later rolled out in Donut.  It stands to reason that the Android team will show us what’s capable in Froyo and with Adobe integration come May 19th.

For all I know Google has been going around secretly working to bring some Adobe applications to Android.  Whether that involves giving away free phones or not is hard to say.  I’d like to think that some of these developers would love nothing more than a chance to stand on stage at Google I/O and demonstrate their apps and games to the thousands in attendance.

    Might We Suggest…

  • Moon Phase App For WVGA Devices

It seems everyday when I am walking outside in the dark, seeing the moon has become a hard task thanimage seeing my way home, well that doesn’t seem to be a problem with this app. The app was created by an XDA member who figured out how to keep track of the moon at all times, even in the brightest of days you will always know what shape and form the moon is taking.

The application can do a lot, all while looking fantastic with its dark blue design, and simple design.

    The features consist of:

Visual picture of the moon phases and the percent of the illuminated area.
Full names of all moon phases.
Zodiac Sign the moon is in.
Current moon’s age:  how far along the moon is in its full cycle.
Moonrise and moonset times for your location.
Amount of time from moonrise and to moonset.
Calculations for the current and other dates.
Network independence:  you can work anywhere in the world without Internet or cellular connections.
Your current location determined by GPS or cellular network.

The application only works for WVGA devices so TG01, HD2, TP2, DIAM2, and all WVGA devices can all know what’s up with the moon, and will never be left wondering.

  • Shuffle Up and Deal: Down on the corner

Words can only say so much. Sometimes you need the numbers.

Below you’ll find my corner rankings from today-on, the cheat sheet I’d use if I were walking into a new draft tonight. Every player currently corner eligible in Yahoo’s game is listed, with two exceptions; Victor Martinez(notes) and Jeff Clement(notes) are held off the list since no one would bother slotting them away from catcher.

What’s happened to this point counts as an audition, but this isn’t a ranking of what’s happened – it’s meant to be a ranking of what will happen. Don’t get hung up too much on the individual prices in a vacuum; what matters is how the players relate to each other. Game on.

    $40 Albert Pujols(notes)
    $38 Alex Rodriguez(notes)
    $38 Miguel Cabrera(notes)
    $37 Ryan Howard(notes)
    $37 Prince Fielder(notes)
    $37 Mark Teixeira(notes)
    $35 Evan Longoria(notes)
    $32 David Wright(notes)

Comments: Cabrera is sitting on a career-high walk rate and I can only see that number going up as teams accept that no one after Cabrera in the Detroit lineup is going to hurt them. … You’re allowed some early-season panic on unproven hitters, but don’t waste any time worrying about Teixeira and Fielder. Ninety percent of your worry should be about pitchers, anyway.

    $30 Mark Reynolds(notes)
    $29 Ryan Zimmerman(notes)
    $28 Justin Morneau(notes)
    $27 Pablo Sandoval(notes)
    $26 Kendry Morales(notes)
    $26 Kevin Youkilis(notes)
    $25 Carlos Pena(notes)
    $25 Adrian Gonzalez(notes)
    $25 Joey Votto(notes)
    $25 Billy Butler(notes)
    $22 Derrek Lee(notes)
    $22 Aramis Ramirez(notes)

Comments: Ramirez is someone I annually give a high ranking too, but I can’t remember the last time I actually purchased him. Maybe I’m starting to believe in goat curses. … The new park in Minnesota certainly isn’t going to hurt left-handed hitters and it might actually give them a push. Good news when you’re sitting on Morneau, Mauer and Kubel for the middle of your order. … It’s hard to believe multiple organizations gave up on Pena and Gonzalez before they merged into stars. I realize San Diego is playing well right now, but I still think there’s a 40-to-50 percent chance that Gonzalez is traded at some point during the year.

    $20 Chone Figgins(notes)
    $20 Lance Berkman(notes)
    $20 Adam Dunn(notes)
    $19 Ian Stewart(notes)
    $18 Jorge Cantu(notes)
    $18 Michael Cuddyer(notes)
    $18 Gordon Beckham(notes)
    $17 Chase Headley(notes)
    $16 Martin Prado(notes)
    $15 James Loney(notes)
    $15 Chipper Jones(notes)
    $15 Adam LaRoche(notes)

Comments: I’m not a Headley owner anywhere but he looks like one of the breakthrough players of the season (don’t overlook the sneaky speed). … Cantu takes an aggressive approach to the plate, but when he makes contact, you almost feel sorry for the baseball. This guy is a rope machine. … Prado picks up some extra value for the multiple positions he covers. And this is another guy squaring the baseball regularly – he’s currently got a ridiculous (and unsustainable) line-drive rate of 31.5 percent.

    $14 Michael Young(notes)
    $14 Adrian Beltre(notes)
    $13 Garrett Jones(notes)
    $13 Placido Polanco(notes)
    $12 Casey McGehee(notes)
    $12 Paul Konerko(notes)
    $12 Jose Lopez(notes)
    $11 Scott Rolen(notes)
    $11 Nick Swisher(notes)
    $11 Alex Gordon(notes)
    $11 Nick Johnson(notes)
    $11 Justin Smoak(notes)
    $10 Juan Uribe(notes)
    $10 Casey Kotchman(notes)
    $10 Daric Barton(notes)
    $10 Mark DeRosa(notes)
    $10 Ike Davis(notes)

Comments: Barton has that Nick Johnson look to him, rolling up 19 free passes over 18 games. … The rookies are always the hardest to gage; Smoak and Davis could earn double their price, or be back in the minors in a month. If you’ve got a more optimistic projection for them, let’s hear it in the comments. … Kotchman will never get into the Hall of Fame without a ticket, but how can Seattle be batting him seventh regularly? Your lineup isn’t that good, Don Wakamatsu. … I’d go a few bucks higher on Uribe if I knew for sure the Giants would keep him in the lineup all year. The same goes for Wigginton in the next group.

    $9 Miguel Tejada(notes)
    $8 Ty Wigginton(notes)
    $8 Aubrey Huff(notes)
    $8 Conor Jackson(notes)
    $7 Alberto Callaspo(notes)
    $7 Casey Blake(notes)
    $7 Kevin Kouzmanoff(notes)
    $6 Gaby Sanchez(notes)
    $6 Troy Glaus(notes)
    $6 David Ortiz(notes)
    $5 Blake DeWitt(notes)
    $5 David Freese(notes)
    $5 Russell Branyan(notes)
    $5 Pedro Alvarez(notes)
    $5 Brandon Inge(notes)
    $5 Eric Chavez(notes)
    $5 Jhonny Peralta(notes)

Comments: Ortiz might do a little damage now and then against righties at Fenway, but he’s overmatched against lefties and the production will fall significantly on the road. This won’t be a pretty endgame. … Huff’s value is buoyed by the fact that the Giants let him bat cleanup daily. So long as that sticks, you get a modest floor from the opportunity alone. … Peralta’s fly ball rate has hit a spike early in 2010, but I still don’t see this guy ever becoming a major power factor again.

    $4 Jose Bautista(notes)
    $4 Mark Teahen(notes)
    $4 Todd Helton(notes)
    $4 Matt LaPorta(notes)
    $3 Edwin Encarnacion(notes)
    $2 Ryan Raburn(notes)
    $2 Maicer Izturis(notes)
    $1 Adam Rosales(notes)
    $0 Brandon Wood(notes)

Comments: Wood is out of options, so the Angels will have to suffer through this nightmare a little longer. But he looks completely overmatched right now

    . …

Does the Coors Field effect keep Helton out of the Hall of Fame? I respect him as a very good player for many years, but there are scores of very good players who don’t deserve a plaque (Dwight Evans and Graig Nettles are two of my favorites).

I’ve said my piece. Your witness.

  • Hyundai Genesis sedan gets the police package getup

This is interesting. As you cop-car fans well know, Ford recently introduced an all new Police Interceptor. After centuries decades of sticking with the body-on-frame, RWD Panther-platform Crown Victoria, Ford made the decision to go with the unit-bodied, front- or all-wheel drive Taurus chassis. They’ve beefed the full-size family hauler up to Herculean stature (claiming that it can withstand a 70 mph rear-end collision!) and by all accounts it should do just fine in the high speed pursuit biz. Still, to many officers and fans of the cars they drive, police cruisers should be driven via the rear wheels.

That said, check out this Hyundai. A Genesis sedan to be specific, all done up in Korean police livery. Looks good, no? Especially with the blue and red lights poking out from the grill. If you’re wondering, the Genesis sedan has either a 3.8-liter V6 or a more muscular 4.6-liter “Tau” V8 up front. Both motors propel the rear wheels. For police duty, we’ll go ahead and assume that Hyundai went with the more potent Tau option, as South Korean coppers will no doubt make use of the 375 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque (slight asterisk – that’s on premium fuel. Should you opt for regular gas, the V8 makes “just” 368 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque).

True, like the Taurus, the Genesis sedan is still a unit body, meaning that officers in pursuit won’t be able to drive over curbs at 50 mph without twisting the kimchi out of the structure. However, given the Genesis sedan’s better than average handling characteristics, they should have little trouble driving around said curb, and thereby bringing the perp to justice that much more quickly. No word on a super-pursuit Genesis Coupe-based cop car. Tip of the confession-extracting sap hat to Nathan!

  • Palm releases promotion tools for webOS developers

Palm has released several tools for developers to help promote their apps in conjunction with their Hot Apps $1 million promotion. The first bit is that in addition to the previously-mentioned Hot Apps Leaderboard at http://palmhotapps.com/, there the Hot Apps Pride Kit. The pride kit consists of a set of widgets and tools to help developers promote their apps on their own websites to show off your app’s position in the Hot Apps contest – heck, creating the widgets doesn’t look too difficult, so even users will be able to take part. We’ll be adding support for these widgets at PreCentral soon, stay tuned.

Palm has also put together a Hot Apps Marketing Kit to help developers promote their apps on social networks. The kit suggests how to optimize your app’s description, how to utilize Facebook and Twitter, and plenty more. All their suggestions are free and, well, we’ll humbly add our own PreCentral Featured Apps Program to the list.

  • Survive The Apocalypse In Luxury For Just $50,000

Forget that musty fallout shelter your grandfather dug in the backyard. If you want to make it through the next zombie attack, earthquake or nuclear war in style, just write a check to Vivos, a California company that’s trying to build a network of swank shelters across the country. For $50K and up, you’ll get an underground home “designed to withstand a 50 megaton blast within 10 miles, a series of force 10 earthquakes, 450 MPH surface winds, a 1,000,000 volt electromagnetic pulse (EMP), and flooding submersion for up to 500 hours.” Of course, you’ll also have to sleep in bunk beds surrounded by 200 of your closest friends, and then deal with survivor’s guilt when you resurface after a year and learn that your less fortunate neighbors have already been eaten by the alien lizard people.

As highlighted by The Guardian, Vivos plans to build 20 underground “assurance of life” centers around the U.S., where up to 40,000 people can survive whatever kills off the other 296 million people in the rest of the country.

Should you have the credentials and the cash, the rewards of a berth in a Vivos shelter seem high. Each staffed complex has a decontamination shower and a jogging machine; a refrigerated vault for human DNA and a conference room with wheely chairs. There are TVs and radios, flat-screen computers, a hospital ward, even a dentist’s surgery ready to serve those who forgot to pack a toothbrush in the hurry. “Virtually any meal” can be cooked from a stockpile of ingredients that includes “baked potato soup” but, strangely, no fish, tinned or otherwise. Framed pictures of mountain ranges should help ease the loss of a world left behind

Vivos claims to have received over 1,000 applications for its network of shelters, though it’s unclear whether the company has built anything more than a prototype near Barstow, CA and a series of slick computer-rendered images of the planned shelters. However, Vivos is apparently hoping to finish its network by 2012, just in time for the Mayan-predicted end of the world.

  • TCPMP New Skin

Being the most functional video player Windows Mobile has got is not very easy, and the look suffers imagefrom that, well XDA has created a new skin. The skin was created by XDA Member bimbam69, who managed to get a new design, and feel to this great media player, but sadly it reminds me of the iPhone.

This skin only works for the most recent build of TCPMP which can be downloaded on XDA also. The build features many video format, and includes support for more devices, but not the HD2’s multi touch function.

If you don’t believe me, here is the feature list:

Suport of FLV1 FLV4 videos and subtitle straight of the box.
    ffmpeg.plg now supports Cinepac, SVQ1, SVQ3, h.263, avc, mpeg4, flv1, flv4, on2Vp6.
matroska.plg is mkv version 2.0 compliant.
flac.plg has the latest 1.2.1 library
    equalizer works fine
asap.plg has the latest library (still some problems exists)
    minor fixes to skin addon
    modified file open dialog
    modified playlist dialog
    reincluded mpc.plg and optionaly tta.plg (for tta.plg see extras.zip)

As you can see TCPMP is still the best and most feature pack. I will be using this skin on my HD2 once I get a good reason to, but for now, it should be worth a try.

  • Can you turn off the Sense UI on the Droid Incredible? Mmmmmm … Not just yet

HTC Droid Incredible - Sense UI

It seems that a lot of folks interested in the HTC Droid Incredible want to be able to turn Sense (HTC’s custom user interface) on and off at will.  Previous HTC handsets (as recent as the HTC Desire) had the ability to do this pretty easily by erasing Sense as the default and throwing up a choice between Sense or the stock Android home screen after you hit the home button.

    Not any more.

We tore into the system files of our Droid Incredible to see what we could find.  After hours of hard work, caffiene and Excedrin, we found some interesting information — the resources
and artwork for vanilla Android seem to be absent, or at least aren’t where we expect them to be.  While we can’t be 100 percent  sure just yet, it certainly appears that the Droid Incredible was meant to only run the Sense UI.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  HTC clearly has upped the game with the new Sense UI,
as our video walkthrough shows.  At this point, if you’re on the fence, the best advice I can
think of is to head down to your local Verizon Wireless store on the April 29 and give the device a spin.  After a few minutes with it, if you think (like we do) that Sense enhances this
particular handset, use your 30 days to find out.

Update: Yep, you can use Helix Launcher 2 on it. So you’re running a launcher on top of Sense. Have fun with that.

  • Lindsay Lohan Dropped From Film “The Other Side”

Cash-strapped and scandal-stained starlet Lindsay Lohan has been dropped from the cast of the forthcoming film The Other Side after the movie’s financiers refused to work with the troubled actress, tattles close to the production have divulged.

Lohan had been tapped to star in the dramedy about a grad student working on a deserted island, but sources related to the production claim the studio became worried about the Mean Girls diva’s ability to deliver in the wake of a series of personal and professional troubles.

“Our team simply chose to move on from Lindsay and we’ll soon be announcing a replacement,” says David Michaels, says the writer/director of the flick, which stars Woody Harrelson, Giovanni Ribisi, Dave Matthews, and Alanis Morissette.

News of the movie debacle comes at the end of a long week for LiLo. Her father attempted to stage an intervention to “save” her on Thursday. Michael Lohan flew from New York to Los Angeles to convince his daughter to enter rehab for addiction to prescription drugs. He went to her apartment building in Hollywood – where she is hosting her 16-year-old sister Ali – accompanied by four plainclothes police officers. The act sent Lindsay on an adrenaline-fueled Twitter rampage against her “ex-dad.”

In addition, Lindsay — who is reportedly having trouble paying her rent — is also rumored to be the main suspect in the recent theft of a friend’s $35,000 Rolex watch.

  • Facebook app updates to 1.2, brings inbox support

    Facebook

Android’s Facebook app got an update yesterday, bringing it to Version 1.2 and bringing native inbox support along with it. In exchange, you lose the option to take and upload a picture from within the main page you see above, but that’s not really a big deal given how easy it is to do from the native Android or Sense (or Motoblur or whatever) camera apps, and you can do it from the news page. We’d still like to see Facebook chat, and maybe less reliance on the mobile site, but it’s still a welcome update.

If you haven’t updated yet, take a gander in the Android Market downloads section. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • 2010 Lexus LS 600h L

    Chauffeur Not Included
    Alexandra Straub, Canadian Auto Press

Very rarely do I say I would rather be the passenger in a vehicle than the driver, after all, I like to be the one in control. It’s my job. But the 2010 Lexus LS 600h L is one of those vehicles that I would have no problem sitting in the back of, relaxing and enjoying the experience of this particularly unique luxury sedan.

    2010 Lexus LS 600h L

    2010 Lexus LS 600h L

Granted, this is one phenomenal vehicle to be behind the wheel of. It is luxury with a capital “L.” From the look of the polished wood trim juxtaposed with the leather covered upper instrument panel, to the feel of the premium leather seats against my derriere, to the touch of the suede-lined roof against my fingers, it’s just divine. Even the touch-screen and new-for-2010 HDD based Navigation System is incredibly easy to use and friendly to the eyes. Yes, it’s a luxury vehicle yet it’s also a driver-friendly vehicle.

Some luxury sedans require learning a secret code to understand what each button means. Not in this Lexus. The only drawback of this vehicle is the position of the 9” LCD monitor for the rear DVD player. It is mounted to the rear end of the centre console and does not fold down. Needless to say I hit my elbow a few times when entering the sedan and it made it very arduous to place my handbag in the back when someone was sitting shotgun. Then again, I wouldn’t have this problem if I was the passenger not the driver, would I?

Another characteristic this Lexus enjoys that is not only critical for a limousine but dumbfounding considering the car’s length is its turning circle. It might sound like an odd thing to mention, but even with its sizeable P245/45R19 all-season tires and 19” aluminum alloy wheels and long wheelbase, it can turn on a dime or more accurately 12 meters (39.4 ft). Everyday driving is a breeze. Upon first glance, or any glance for that matter, the LS 600h L is not a small vehicle. Its size might even be a little overwhelming to some, but from behind the wheel it doesn’t feel big or bulky, is extremely smooth on the pavement and very easy to park. After all, the LS has pretty much every corner covered when it comes to sensors thanks to its Advanced Parking Guidance System (APGS) and the rearview camera, which is as clear as my mom’s new HD television.

Where I had the most fun, though, was in the back seat. I’m not talking about ‘that’ kind of fun either! While I was parked outside waiting for my husband, I decided to hop in back where my sister-in-law was already sitting. There I had the Friday night of my life. Where else can I get to sit in the back of the most expensive hybrid Lexus makes and enjoy a vibrating shiatsu massage with my feet perched comfortably on a retractable ottoman? Massage and ottoman features are only available on the right side (passenger side) of the LS 600h L, the side I was seated on so I literally was in the lap of luxury. Too bad we forgot to bring a DVD because the Premium Executive Package that includes these items also adds a DVD entertainment system with satellite TV. And when we wanted some privacy to people watch, all it took was a push of a button for the power rear window sunshades to pop up. Gosh, I could live in the back of this vehicle. All it needs is a fridge and a shower. I think we sat there for over an hour and I’m pretty sure this is one of the few instances when I told David to take his time; I was in no rush. Astonished by this, he said to me, “This car must have magic woven into its fibers.” I concur and expand: the rear seat has magic fingers.

What happens under the hood is also pretty magical. Features aside, what makes this luxury sedan so amazing is the fact that it’s a hybrid. Lexus is no stranger to the ‘green’ world since its model lineup has four hybrid options. The LS 600h L gets the most powerful available, a 5.0-litre, 32-valve, V8 engine which works in conjunction with three electric drive motors and a dual mode, Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). The result is a net 438 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque, so there is no shortage of get up and go. Also, Lexus Hybrid Drive is a full hybrid system meaning it can use the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) alone, the electric motors alone, or both together, meaning the ICE and electric motors are optimized to make fuel economy as good as it can be or power as instantaneous as possible, depending on the situation.

When it comes to fuel economy, I still marvel at how well the LS 600h L performs, especially since it’s an All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle. On average it uses and estimated 10.6L/100km in the city and 9.1L/100km on the highway. Considering all the horses under the hood, that’s amazing. Throughout my test period I drove close to 400kms, barely reached under half a tank and didn’t spend a small fortune filling it up. Buying the car itself is another story since its base MSRP is $119,950. With the Premium Executive Package ($24,050) the MSRP jumps to $144,000. I’ll be saving my pennies for quite some time.

Speaking of dreams, the 2010 Lexus LS 600h L is a dream to drive or be driven in. Its refined ride, to-die-for features and Hybrid Drive system makes this a truly exceptional vehicle, not only on the inside and out, but underneath the hood, too.

“WITH the paint hardly dry on its new “Gullwing” coupe, Benz’s high-performance arm AMG has revealed details of an electric car that can match the SLS pound for pound.
What is even more exciting is that this electric performance model will be ready for sale within three years.
Based on the aforementioned SLS coupe, the electric version of the car, the SLS eDrive features not one but four electric motors – one for each wheel.
Speaking in Germany recently, AMG’s head of vehicle development Tobias Moeres described the electric SLS as a virtual road-going “laboratory”.
Rated at 100kW apiece, the four electric motors deliver drive to all four wheels, making it all-wheel-drive with the added benefits this brings in the form of improved traction and handling.
The combined torque output is 880Nm and the instant torque that characterises electric motors can catapult the car from standstill to 100km/h in less than four seconds.
Top speed however is limited at this stage to about 190km/h.
Although it’s significantly heavier, Moeres said the electric version of the car “covers its weight very easily”.
The car has a range of about 180km and can be charged to 80 per cent capacity in 20 to 30 minutes.
AMG has been testing the SLS eDrive on tracks in southern Europe.

A standard SLS weighs 1650kg while the electric one tips the scales at 2100kg.
Most of this extra weight can be attributed to the lithium-ion batteries. The batteries are distributed front and back in the engine bay and area normally occupied by the fuel tank as well as along the centre transmission tunnel, giving the car a low centre of gravity.
The standard double-wishbone suspension has been replaced in front by a new pushrod setup with coil-over dampers that are mounted horizontally, freeing up space around the front axle.
The car is said to have excellent handling characteristics, helped by the ability to alter the amount of power delivered to individual wheels.
But what is performance without the roar of a V8 or the satisfaction derived from changing gears.
It’s a question that keeps cropping up in any discussion about electric performance models.
AMG’s engine, powertrain and electronics boss Friezrich Eichler has assigned a team of eight engineers to deal with these and other issues.
Eichler is not a fan of artificially giving the car an engine note, much like changing the ring tone on your mobile phone.
For one thing he confirmed the exhaust tailpipes have been removed from the electric version.
“If we do it our SLS will have a natural electric sound,” he said.
Engineers are exploring the possibility of amplifying or altering the physical design of the electric motors to generate their own engine note – to give the car a unique, low-pitched turbine sound.
They have also been experimenting with giving the car a gear change, instead of the one forward gear that electric cars normally have – much like the effect you get with a stepped, continuously variable-style transmission.
The result is apparently very effective.
With blokes like these on the job the future is looking electrifying.”
  • MyBackup Pro: A ROM flashers lifesaver

If there is one thing a rooted phone user does most, it’s flashing. What I found most annoying when I first rooted my phone was the lack of good backup software. I could flash three to four times a day trying the latest and greatest of what some new developer was able to port to the G1. The only problem was, when I found a good ROM that I liked, getting it back to the way I had it before was extremely time consuming. Things like changing the notifications and re-downloading all of my applications were taking forever. I had lost hope of finding a good solution until I found MyBackup Pro.

With the latest update, you now have the ability to back up everything to your SD Card or the Online Storage (50mb). This application can back up everything, including your SMS, MMS, Settings and Home Settings. To the stock user this may not even hit your radar, but to an everyday flasher, this is a lifesaver. With MyBackup Pro you can save hours of time and just restore all of your data to your new ROM.

Along with saving a lot of time for rooted users, this application is easy to use. There aren’t a whole lot of options for the user and the interface is pretty straight forward. Once you click on Backup, it’ll ask you exactly what you need, where you want to save it, and get the task done for you. The same speed is noticed in the restore as well. It’s a bulk one click install, which is nice because some of the free apps in the category require you to click “install” for each application you have.
NOTE: The more data/applications you have, the longer it’ll take.

    The Good:

    • One click install for applications
    • Easy interface
    • Does the job well
    • Able to restore across software versions: meaning going from 1.6 to 2.1 is no sweat!

    The Bad:

    • If you back out of the application while it’s working, you’ll have to start over
    • When restoring Android Home, it won’t restore your widgets.

    Final Verdict:
Overall this app does so much for $4.99. It is a lifesaver.

  • What To Say To Your Cable Company To Get Them To Lower Your Bill

Readers have told us the best way to save money on your cable bill without the hassle of actually switching is to call them up and negotiate… but what should you actually say?

    Pre-Game Warm-Up:

Research: The first thing you’ll want to do is look around and see what the other companies are offering. Don’t forget to include Dish Network and DirecTV, particularly if you enjoy sports and can speak intelligently about the superiority of DirecTV’s sports packages.

Locate Evidence: Gather a copy of your bill as well as any deals you’ve been offered by the competition so you can refer to them during the negotiation.

    Kick-Off:

Call your cable company and get transferred to the retentions specialist. You don’t want to be negotiating with someone who isn’t authorized to help you. You can also try to go directly there by using the annoying phone tree robot and expressing intent to cancel or reduce services.

Once you get to the retention specialist, begin the negotiation. Remain calm, be firm but friendly, and try to relate to the person on the other end of the telephone. A friend who can save you money is a good friend indeed:

You: Hi, this is Captain Awesome III, [that is, your name, right?], and my cable bill has recently increased. I noticed that [competing cable/satellite company] has a promotion that would save me [amount of money.] I’m interested in lowering my cable bill.

They will likely argue with you, or offer you Free HBO. If you wanted Free HBO, fantastic! Take your Free HBO. If not, try saying stuff like:

You: I appreciate the offer, and I do like HBO, particularly when its free, but I really called to lower my bill. Is there anything you can do to bring your offer down to where the competition is?

If they are really giving you a hard time, try negotiating based on your value as a customer. From what we’ve heard, those of you who subscribe to expensive sports packages or get your telephone services from the cable company have the strongest negotiating positions.

You: Did you realize that I pay full price for a lot of services? I’d really like a discount on some of these [read all full price things from your bill, line by line.]

Remember, timing is everything. The best time to call and negotiate is after your “deal” expires. Once you’ve got a new one, be sure to lock in a time period. Some cable companies will want you to agree to a contract with a termination fee. It’s really up to you whether you want to do this, but there’s no harm in trying to avoid it.

Sudden Death Overtime: It’s possible that these tactics won’t work. Either this is because there isn’t sufficient competition in your area and thus not enough “churn” to warrant negotiating with customers, or it’s because your rep’s dog took a dump in her shoe that morning and she’s taking it out on you.

In order to make sure it’s not the dog’s fault you’re overpaying for cable, call back in a week and try again.

Did this script save you money? Did we miss something? Did you find something that worked better? Send us what you said to your cable company at [email protected] and we’ll share it with the world.

  • Customizing Expedit storage boxes

Materials: EXPEDIT shelves + DRONA box

Description: This is just a small hack but was useful for our newly painted room – sage green.

In the room we have a single 4 box Expedit shelf in a very small space. I had bought Drona boxes to go with the shelves but they come in limited colours which looked awful with our green room so I just grabbed some fabric (happens to be Ikea fabric) and fixed my small but irksome problem.

Simply take fabric that works with your room/space/colours and measure a square just slightly bigger than the front of the Drona box. (1/2 inch should do)

Fold down the edges and iron a crisp fold (ensure you have made it narrow enough to tuck under the handle/flap of the Drona, but wide enough to cover the front of the box.

I used a glue gun and just glued all around the edges of the fabric and stuck it down.

I started on the top/flap end and put the glue on the box, under the flap and then slid the fabric under the flap (using a spatula or cake knife to get it under smoothly and press the fabric onto the glue.

It’s a small thing but the room looks so much better having something that looks coordinated with the room. Everyone surprised to learn its all Ikea.

  • “Dexter” Michael C. Hall Cancer Remission

Jennifer Carpenter says her husband, Dexter star Michael C. Hall, has “fully recovered” from cancer and has returned to work.

Carpenter said Friday that Hall was “incredibly brave” when he announced in January that he was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cancer of the lymph nodes. Hall, 38, is currently in remission after undergoing treatment at a health facility near Los Angeles. In fact, he was snapped by paps filming scenes for the upcoming film East Fifth Bliss — alongside co-star Lucy Liu — in New York City this week.

Michael won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe earlier this year for his portrayal of Dexter, a serial killer who targets other murderers. Jennifer stars on the gory Showtime hit series as Dexter’s sister.
