  • 2011 Lotus Elise Rated At 56.1 MPG: Eco-Hoons Rejoice!

    2011 Lotus Elise

Who thought social responsibility could be this fast?

First the good news: the 2011 Lotus Elise has received a European fuel economy rating of 56.1 miles per gallon. Now the bad news: that’s derived using Imperial gallons, not U.S. gallons, and the European cycle requirements are much less stringent than our own EPA cycle requirements. Still, if you do the conversion from Imperial gallons to U.S. gallons, that still produces better than 46 mpg, making the new Elise the first green car capable of kicking ass and taking names on a racetrack. We can only speculate on what the EPA rating will ultimately be, but expect it to remain very eco-friendly

    2011 Lotus Elise

    See? Green can be sexy.

How did Lotus manage this feat? By swapping the old 1.8 liter motor for a new 1.6 liter version with variable valve timing. Power output remains the same, but both mileage and carbon emission are substantially improved, and the car retains a sub six second zero to sixty time. Lotus engineers also found a way to improve aerodynamics, leading to a four percent reduction in drag.

  • Senate Judiciary chair predicts speedy nomination of new Supreme Court justice

[JURIST] US Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) predicted Sunday that President Obama will nominate a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens in time for hearings to be concluded over the summer. In an appearance with Ranking Member Jeff Sessions (R-AL) on NBC’s “Meet the Press” discussed the coming confirmation battle over the replacement for who announced Friday that he at the end of the court’s 2009 term this summer. Leahy said “I think we’re going to hear soon enough so that we can wrap this up this summer.” Sessions would not rule out the possibility of a Republican filibuster of the nominee, however, saying:f we have a nominee that evidences a philosophy of “judges know best,” that they can amend the Constitution by saying it has evolved, and effectuate agendas, then we’re going to have a big fight about that because the American people don’t want that. Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) expressed similar sentiments in an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday where he would not rule out the possibility of a filibuster against a nominee that “com to the bench with an ideological position,” but described the filibuster as “unlikely.”
In a letter to Obama explaining is retirement, Stevens wrote, “it would be in the best interests of the Court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the Court’s next Term.” There had been much speculation about Stevens’s possible retirement, and leading candidates for his replacement reportedly include Solicitor General Elena Kagan and federal appellate Judges Merrick Garland and Diane Wood. Stevens, 89, was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Gerald Ford and was seated in December 1975. He previously served on the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Stevens is the court’s oldest and most senior member and has served as the leader of the court’s liberal bloc. His retirement gives Obama his second opportunity to nominate a Supreme Court justice, following last year’s retirement of Justice David Souter and confirmation of Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

  • Reader Not Impressed With Reality Of KFC Double Down

Consumerist reader Bill popped into his local KFC in Houston today and found that they were selling the already infamous Double Down — better known as bacon and cheese wedged between slabs of fried chicken. And, as often happens when confronted with fast food that looks good in ads, Bill was a little let down by what he found inside.

Says Bill, who snapped these side-by-side pics of both the fried and grilled versions of the sandwich, “The KFC Double Down ‘sandwich’ looked a lot better in the advertising photos… This is something I’ll only be buying once; they’re expensive! $4.99 each.”

Here’s the full-size version of the pic. Is it just me, or does the cheesy interior look like a fried egg? Hmmm… now there’s an idea.

  • Getting iPhone Internet Tethering Working in Linux

I’ve owned couple of mobile phones now, all in increasing number of features. But the one thing that remained common amongst all of them, was the ability to use a tethered Internet connection in both Windows and Linux. Until I got the iPhone, that is. With the iPhone, I could no longer use the iPhone as a modem in Linux. Not anymore.

I was recently researching about claims that Ubuntu could sync with the iPhone, even the non-jailbroken ones. I was a little skeptical about this. What I found was libimobiledevice, and the iPhone Ethernet driver for Linux. I’ll write on libimobiledevice at a later day.

Let’s have a look at the USB Ethernet driver: The iPhone USB Ethernet driver was written by Diego Giagio, and is a kernel driver which adds support for iPhone tethering through USB cables. Like libimobiledevice, the driver doesn’t require you to jailbreak your iPhone, so bonus marks here.

Let’s start on how we can achieve this. This post is written from a Ubuntu/Debian system perspective, if you’re using some other distribution, the steps should remain same, with the exception of getting the packages via your favourite package manager.

First: Get the source from Diego’s git repository. If you don’t have git installed, open the terminal and type:

    sudo apt-get install git-core

Once git is installed, get the source for the drivers

    git clone git://github.com/dgiagio/ipheth.git

The output should be something like

    sathya@shaman:~$ git clone git://github.com/dgiagio/ipheth.git
Initialized empty Git repository in /home/shaman/ipheth/.git/
    remote: Counting objects: 10, done.
remote: Compressing objects: 100% (9/9), done.
    remote: Total 10 (delta 0), reused 0 (delta 0)
    Receiving objects: 100% (10/10), 8.11 KiB, done.
    sathya@shaman:~$

    Now, compile the pairing program.

    cd ipheth/ipheth-pair

    make

You should get an output like:

    sathya@shaman:~/ipheth/ipheth-pair$ make
    gcc -Wall -O2 ipheth-pair.c -o ipheth-pair -liphone

    Next, type:

    sudo make install

You should get an output like:

    sathya@shaman:~/ipheth/ipheth-pair$ sudo make install
    install -m 0755 ipheth-pair /lib/udev/
    install -m 0644 90-iphone-tether.rules /etc/udev/rules.d
    /sbin/udevadm control –reload-rules
    sathya@shaman:~/ipheth/ipheth-pair$

    Compile the Kernel driver:

    cd ipheth/ipheth-driver

    make

You should get an output like:

    sathya@shaman:~$ cd ipheth/ipheth-driver
    sathya@shaman:~/ipheth/ipheth-driver$ make
    make -C /lib/modules/2.6.28-15-generic/build M=/home/sathya/ipheth/ipheth-driver modules
    make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic’
    CC [M] /home/sathya/ipheth/ipheth-driver/ipheth.o
    Building modules, stage 2.
    MODPOST 1 modules
    CC /home/sathya/ipheth/ipheth-driver/ipheth.mod.o
    LD [M] /home/sathya/ipheth/ipheth-driver/ipheth.ko
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.28-15-generic’
    sathya@shaman:~/ipheth/ipheth-driver$

The kernel module is ready. Now load the module.

    sudo insmod ipheth.ko

We’re all set to try the new driver out. Now connect the iPhone. The iPhone should get detected, as shown in the picture.

To confirm that the USB Ethernet driver is in use, open the terminal and type

    dmesg | grep iPhone

You should get an output like:

    sathya@shaman:~/ipheth/ipheth-driver$ dmesg | grep iPhone
[22871.808469] ipheth 2-2:4.2: Apple iPhone USB Ethernet device attached

Yay! That means the USB Ethernet driver is ready. Lets switch on Tethering on the iPhone.
    Switch on iPhone tethering

Lets see what happens. Prior to installing the driver, I would get no notification and nothing would happen. Not now.

To confirm that we have indeed connected using iPhone let’s have a look at Network Manager connections:

    iPhone tethering done

And there you go, iPhone tethering on Linux!

    Notes:
1: You _need_ to have tethering working. From what I know, tethering is not officially allowed under AT&T’s plan, so I don’t think this method will work.
2: I was unable to compile the pairing program. I’m not sure why the compilation failed. Despite this, the Kernel driver works work. I assume that the pairing program is required if you need Bluetooth tethering.
3: I tested this on my iPhone 3G running on iPhone OS 3.1.2. Although mine is a jailbroken iPhone, the author mentions that jailbreaking is not required.

  • Pre-Portland Playoff Scenarios

Click here for the Lakers – Blazers Gameday Preview Page

The Lakers have locked up the No. 1 seed in the West, but can still play a crucial role in determining whom they’ll face in the first round of the playoffs in Sunday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

A week ago, the Blazers looked to have an edge on both the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs to stay out of No. 8, but a Friday evening home loss to Dallas in particular has put Portland in danger of facing the Lakers in the second season.

Below are the current standings, with team records and final three opponents:

    6) Oklahoma City (49-30); @GS, @ POR, MEM
    7) San Antonio (49-31); MIN, @DAL
    8) Portland (48-31); @LAL, OKC, GS

San Antonio owns the tiebreaker over Oklahoma City but Portland has it over the Spurs, while the Portland – O.K.C. breaker won’t be determined until the two teams face off on Monday, April 12. As such, if the Thunder manage to win on the road, they’ll possess the tiebreak due to division win percentages, but if Portland wins, they would claim the honors due to a 3-1 season edge.

The Lakers, of course, can throw a big wrench into Portland’s plan to move up to the seven or six spot by beating the Blazers on Sunday, which would put them a game behind San Antonio in the loss column.

  • my decision.

Okay, so I’ve kept everyone hanging for awhile since my last post regarding if I have become a vegetarian or not…

And the simple answer is…there isn’t one!

What it all comes down to is labels. I have a real difficult time with committing to label myself “vegetarian,” “vegan,” or even “flexitarian.” I love food. I love good food. And I can say that within the past two weeks, I have actually made some substantial food changes. Granted, I have always been eating a healthy and well-rounded diet, but the past 2+ weeks I have been eating strictly vegetarian and probably 90% vegan. And for me, it’s been easy!! I love to experiment and try new things. The important thing is not to think about what you’re not eating, but all of the other amazing options out there. In addition, I feel like I’ve had more energy and even a better attitude, despite whether or not this can be attributed to my food intake or just general life, it doesn’t matter.

I’ve really struggled with this topic and this post for awhile. Do I want to tell everyone I’ve gone “all the way” and label myself into a specific genre of food eaters? What if I change my mind? What if I want a big, juicy steak!? or a big hunk of cheese??

I have so much respect and admiration for all the vegans in the blog world. I love to make “vegan” meals and they make me feel great after I eat them. Also, I know in my heart that a plant based diet is the best for me and for the environment. When I see ANY animal, I know they have emotions and thoughts just like us and it makes me incredibly sad to think of all the torture they go through just for US. As if we’re any more special or better than them!! Not to mention how meat consumption effects the environment.

Still, despite all of this and every valid point or reason for going “all the way,” I still do not want to commit to the label.

So, for now, I am just going to continue eating the way I have been the last two weeks, and continue to choose the most healthy choice if I am given two roads. If someone wants to call that vegetarian, then hey, I guess I am one!

This video pretty sums up my feelings:

    Thoughts?

In less serious news, but OH SO EXCITING…my Vitamix has arrived!!!!!!!
It was on my doorstep when I came home from work on Friday, but I was so exhausted that I chose to leave it for the morning, like Christmas!!

I’ll let the images speak for themselves…

Unfortunately, I learned that I do indeed have an oral allergy syndrome to raw peaches:( Everytime I eat them, my lips swell and become itchy. I learned this again last night when we made peach sorbet in the vitamix. damnit.

    not cool!

  • Goldman Sachs Explains Itself: We Weren’t Betting Against Customers, Just Betting Differently

CEO Lloyd Blankfein signed a letter to shareholders for the Goldman Sachs annual report to shareholders, explaining the company’s position on issues that have been giving it public relations heartburn. It says Goldman Sachs acted properly in its dealings with AIG. And it says that it wasn’t betting against its clients on securities related to residential mortgages. The explanations aren’t new, but….

There were a number of reports that Goldman Sachs was betting against its clients, including this one by Gretchen Morgenson in the New York Times last December. There is a brief explanation of one way to do this, used by the hedge fund Magnetar, in this post, and a longer discussion here. Magnetar denies that it did anything wrong, and specifically denies that it would make more money if the CDOs tanked.

Blankfein tells his investors that the market for residential mortgage related products and subprime securities was volatile in the first half of 2007. Its customers all had their own views of the future, positive and negative. Clients

… came to Goldman Sachs and other financial intermediaries to establish long and short exposures to the residential housing market through RMBS, CDOs CDS and other types of instruments or transactions.

Although Goldman Sachs held various positions in residential mortgage-related products in 2007, our short positions were not a “bet against our clients.” Rather, they served to offset our long positions. Our goal was, and is, to be in a position to make markets for our clients while managing our risk within prescribed limits.

The NYT article describes Goldman Sachs’ use of CDOs to bet against the housing market. Some of these CDOs were designed to hedge against losses in the company’s inventory of residential real estate backed mortgage securities. One of the CDOs, called Abacus, was a synthetic CDO. Morgenson explains:

Abacus allowed investors to bet for or against the mortgage securities that were linked to the deal. The C.D.O.’s didn’t contain actual mortgages. Instead, they consisted of credit-default swaps, a type of insurance that pays out when a borrower defaults. These swaps made it much easier to place large bets on mortgage failures.

Rather than persuading his customers to make negative bets on Abacus, Mr. Egol kept most of these wagers for his firm, said five former Goldman employees who spoke on the condition of anonymity. On occasion, he allowed some hedge funds to take some of the short trades.

There is nothing there that would be inconsistent with the Magnetar strategy. Among other things, the Magnetar strategy works best if the CDO fails, and the Abacus deals were flops.

The NYT article describes another important change in CDSs in 2005. The new rules required counterparties to post collateral if one or more triggers occurred, including a ratings downgrade or a decrease in the value of the CDO. That made it easier to collect on the CDS in the event of collapse of the CDO.

According to Bloomberg, AIG wrote protection CDSs for some of the Abacus deals. In the shareholders letter, Goldman Sachs says it demanded that AIG post more and more collateral for AIG’s prospective obligations on the CDSs. It claims it did so because the evidence it had from its market-making activities showed that the market was weakening. Of course, it knew what kind of assets were in the Abacus deals, which probably helped it have an opinion. AIG did not agree with the collateral calls, but eventually posted more collateral. Goldman Sachs claims that it bought other instruments to protect itself in case AIG didn’t pay in full. When AIG failed, Goldman Sachs got paid in full on its CDSs, effectively by taxpayers.

The Abacus transactions allow speculators place bets on the direction of the housing market. If AIG sold protection, does that mean it had a position on the housing market? Or was Goldman Sachs just taking advantage of a foolish player?

    Here’s more from the letter:

Clients come to us as a market maker because of our willingness and ability to commit our capital and to assume market risk. We are responding to our clients’ desire either to establish, or to increase or decrease, their exposure to a position on their own investment views. We are not “betting against” them.

Goldman Sachs creates a new definition of “market maker”, someone who enables speculation. Blankfein thinks his company has no responsibility to share information it gathered in its position as “market maker” with the people it invites to the new casino. Evan Newmark, a columnist in the Wall Street Journal, nails the issue: are the investors customers or counterparties?

The definition of a business PR fail? The Wall Street Journal writes a humor column on your spin.

  • Spurrier’s new year resolution: “Be a jerk”

Steve Spurrier may be feeling the heat in Columbia as he enters his sixth season as the head coach of the Gamecocks. Not only is he resuming the playcalling duties full-time, but he’s also promising to be more of a jerk:

“I’m going to yell and scream and be a jerk,” said Spurrier, who was known for throwing his visor at Florida. “I hope one or two players say, ‘That Coach Spurrier is yelling at us all the time.’ Nobody has said that lately. I’m going to try and be a little bit more of a jerk to some guys, because we’ve put up with too much soft play, put up with pitiful effort by some guys and put up with just not good team play.”

ESPN says Spurrier has had the best five-year run of any South Carolina coach with 35 wins, but the USC faithful haven’t quite forgiven the Ol Ball Coach for the 20-7 rout UConn laid on the Gamecocks in the Papajohns.com Bowl.

Spurrier has taken the Gamecocks to five straight bowl games… but they’ve lost four out of five. The OBC gave South Carolina a new swagger… but they’ve lost three out of five to Clemson under Spurrier.

Spurrier resuming playcalling is a promising sign, but if South Carolina doesn’t fare better after a few tossed visors… the “year of the jerk” may by Spurrier’s last in Columbia.

  • Bruno, LA’s Watchdog: Everybody’s Got a Take on the Cirque du L.A.

Welcome to the doghouse, Steve.  Hope you don’t have fleas.
Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for bruno4.JPG
As everybody knows, Steve Lopez is the highest paid writer at The Dog Trainer, making about ten times more than my master Ron got as editor of the Green Sheet.

Lopez is also famous for writing about a musical homeless guy that was made into a movie.  Lopez was portrayed by Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr., who was on his way to being homeless himself before cleaning up his act. Now he’s Iron Man.  Good for him.

As a columnist, Lopez does have a tough job.  He needs to come up with 800 or so words every few days to earn those big bucks.  So I suppose I shouldn’t be offended if he borrows from me.

But for the record, all I get for my efforts is some crappy kibble, which is now doled out by some Nazi-like contraption in a fruitless effort to control my behavior after I bit the pool guy.

For those of you with short memories, two days ago I compared City Hall to a circus:

“I’ve been sitting on the sidelines over the last couple weeks watching our so-called leaders turn City Hall into a circus, seeing the showdown between our ringmaster mayor and his clowns at the DWP with the Council over whether LA is going to go broke without the a bailout from the utility.  Controller Wendy Greuel’s been the girl on the flying trapeze.”

Pretty good, if I do say so myself.  I particularly like the Wendy line.  She’s so damn cute.  Much cuter than the scary woman she replaced, who I think I once compared to the Wicked Witch from the East. Or was it the Wicked Witch from the West.  You know who I mean.  The one with those freaky flying monkeys.

    But I digress.

Anyway, the headline on Steve’s offering this morning is: “Attention Cirque du L.A. ringmasters: Do your jobs”.

Steve’s subject, of course, is also the chaos and foolishness going on at City Hall over the last couple weeks

“They could sell tickets to the spectacle at City Hall — it might help fill the budget gap — and I’ve got the perfect name for the show.

    “Cirque du L.A.”

OK, so the guy knows French.  Big deal.  I bet he can’t lick himself like I can.

Steve did come up with an original twist, one I hadn’t seen anyone do up till this point in the absurdity – he quoted the Wicked Witch from the East, or West or somewhere, and guess what?  She had absolutely nothing interesting to say.  At least Dick Riordan told Rick Orlov of the Green Sheet that the city should declare bankruptcy.  Don’t you just love old Dick, don’t you miss Jimmy even?

But I digress — again.  Back to Steve.

Before you hit me with the old “imitation is the most sincere form of flattery”  crap, please remember I am a freaking dog writing for a blog that nobody at the Dog Trainer admits to even reading.  Those guys on Spring Street have been dissing Ronnie since he was at the old HerEx writing front-page stories about crocodiles – or was it sea serpents? — in the storm drains.

And I suppose the circus-cirque thing could be just a coincidence.  It’s not like it’s the most original metaphor.  So I’m going to cut Steve some slack.  It’s hard coming up with new ideas all the time and he did give credit to Walter Moore, remember the guy who ran a strong second to Antonio last year and would be a favorite to beat him if the election was this year..

After all, look what I wrote about this morning.

    Woof!

    Dear All

First in the dock should be the promoters of the so-called saver bulb; each one contains between 3 and 7 milligram of a mercury compound powder. Most of these bulbs end up in landfill sites and in a decade from now there will be an estimated 100 million of these bulbs in the dumps, adding some 300 kilogram of irrecoverable mercury compound to the ground water all around the world. In further decades ahead, this will cause mental diseases for which there is no cure, as all ground water will be contaminated already.

Second should be the promoters of windfarms. Besides destroying rural countryside by digging cable trenches, laying roads and creating noise pollution, these towers have been proven to kill large birds by the thousands. It has also been extensively proven that not one single fossil fuel powerplant has been closed as a result of the intermittent and unreliable supply of electricity off these towers. In the final balance, windfarms add carbon footprint.

Third should be the promoters of so-called bio-fuel. It has been extensively proven that the total energy requirements to produce bio-fuel is greater than the resultant “carbon savings” made by not burning fossil fuels.
