  • THAT’S RIGHT! Corporate Responsibility for Human Rights. Concepts, Examples, Approaches

More and more businesses are committing to respect for human rights. There are now a large number of national and international initiatives for the protection of human rights based on voluntary undertakings by enterprises themselves. Over and above this favourable trend a
vigorous international debate is in progress on the scope of state and corporate obligations, and the issue is being taken up by an increasing number of states in their policy-making.

In its pursuit of the principle of achieving equitable globalization, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is working to ensure that governments, businesses and other social actors assume responsibility for human rights in particular, in developing countries. This is for example achieved through partnerships with the private sector to promote responsible corporate management, by way of an advisory project on human rights, corporate responsibility and sustainable development and by support for the mandate of the UN Special Representative on the issue of human rights and transnational
corporations and other business enterprises, Professor John Ruggie.

In order to develop a joint approach to the perception of this responsibility by all actors concerned, the BMZ is organizing a conference on” Corporate Responsibility for Human Rights.” The conference is for invited guests. Invited guests include national and international representatives of the worlds of industry and commerce, politics, civil society, trade unions and academia to exchange opinions and debate the relevant issues. A Town Hall Meeting with Professor John Ruggie will enable participants to engage directly in a dialogue with the UN Special Representative on Human Rights and Business Enterprises.

There will also be workshops to provide a forum for the discussion of selected problems and the development of common approaches.
Programme During the morning session of the conference, Professor John Ruggie, the UN Special Representative on Business and Human Rights, will hold a discussion on the framework he has developed for integrating human rights into the business context. This framework is
    based on three pillars:

    (1) Protect – the state duty to protect against human rights abuses by
third parties, (2) Respect – the corporate responsibility to respect human rights and (3) Remedy – greater access by victims to effective remedy, judicial and non-judicial.

A town hall meeting with Prof. John Ruggie, will give participants an opportunity to engage in a direct dialogue with the UN Special Representative on Business and Human Rights, and exchange
views on the practical implementation of this framework.

John G. Ruggie is the Berthold Beitz Professor of International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and an Affiliated Professor in International Legal Studies at Harvard Law School. He is also the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Business and Human Rights.

Three parallel workshops will be held in the afternoon to discuss selected issues and develop joint solutions. These workshops will be hosted by three cooperation partners supporting the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in its endeavours to enhance corporate responsibility for human rights.
Simultaneous interpretation into German will be provided during the plenary sessions at the beginning and end of the conference. The workshops will be held in English. The programme will be finalized in mid-January.

  • Open Gov, The Movie: A Documentary About Gov 2.0

The good folks at UK open government consultancy Delib have just released a short documentary about the United States’ first year since President Obama’s Open Government memorandum.

The documentary was shot by Delib founder Chris Quigley over two months last year, both on location in Washington DC and via Skype.

    Sponsor

“On a visit to Washington to see our partners NAPA back in November,” writes Quigley on the Delib blog, “I thought it would be fun to interview a few of the Open Gov people I’d read about and worked with over the last 12 months… I discovered that Open Gov was bigger and more impactful that I first thought and decided to extend the ‘few interviews’ into a short film, and launch the film to mark the achievements of the Open Gov initiative on its one year anniversary.”

Quigley’s interviewees ended up ranging in scope from the White House’s head of the Open Gov initiative, Beth Noveck, to Tim O’Reilly, founder of O’Reilly Media.

  • Celebrate Unbirthdays with Friends & Family

    By Guest Blogger Dawn Meisch

If you want to plan a party, but no holidays are on the horizon, throw an “Unbirthday Party”. This celebration is hosted on a regular day when it is not the birthday of any of the guests. The party is an amusing way to get together with friends or family and have plenty of fun.

    Invitations and Expectations
One way to get everyone in the mood for the party is to send out invitations. Invitations should not only include the date, time and place, but also instructions for what to wear and what to bring. Instruct guests to wear something they’d never wear to their own birthday party or to come wearing a peculiar hat, and they should bring a small gift they would like to receive themselves.

    Image: istockphoto

    Image: istockphoto

    Delightful Decorations
When decorating for this type of party, anything goes. Be unpredictable with your decor. Hang a Happy Birthday Banner upside down. If you’re feeling extra whimsical, securely hang a candelabra or a vase upside down from your ceiling. Perch craft store birds in strategic places throughout your home with phrases like “Happy UnBirthday” or even “Tweet” coming from their beaks.

Your table setting is a fantastic and easy place to continue the theme of your party. The dinnerware you serve on should be as fun as your party. Pfaltzgraff has a wide variety of eye-catching patterns that are sure to add to the offbeat atmosphere of your party. Since they are dishwasher safe, they make cleaning up super quick. Place flatware upside down on the table or place them under your Pfaltzgraff dinnerware instead of next to it.

    Magnificent Menu
Your menu may vary depending on what time of day it is, but be sure that you have appetizers ready for guests who may arrive early. Something easy like hummus with pita chips or bean dip and guacamole with corn chips. Offer guests a glass of wine or pink lemonade for non-drinkers. Easy do-it-yourself meals are perfect for this type of party. Set up a taco bar or a chili bar with all the ingredients necessary, and let guests make their own creations. Include some wacky items like chocolate sprinkles or powdered sugar with the available fixings.

    Fun and Frolic
Before your guests arrive, place a few single use cameras around the room and encourage guests to pick it up and take pictures at whim. If you’d rather stay all digital, ask guests to bring their digital cameras in your invitation. Set up a “Posing Station” where your friends can pose for their unbirthday photo. Have things like an empty picture frames, a stuffed parrot or an oversized martini glass to use as props. Once dinner is finished, have everyone gather around with their gifts. Have your guests unwrap their own presents. Since it’s not their birthday, they can buy something for themselves. If your guests are the board game type, choose a few games to play. If not, just let guests mingle and have fun.

Hosting an Unbirthday party can be work, but the laughter of your friends will make it all worthwhile. Let loose and let your inner silliness take over, and you will enjoy yourself even more. The most important thing is to enjoy your party and have fun.

    Wishing Wall Frame and Chest

We’ve never seen a Wishing Wall ($45) before and are brimming over with wonderful ideas for how to use this honeycombed holder and the colorful papers that fill it! Of course it would be lovely as a guest book alternative at a wedding, or a great activity at a baby shower, but why not keep it tucked in your home, filling it with ideas, dreams, wishes and plans for the future? You could use it as a time capsule or as inspiration on less than stellar days. The frame is completely customizable, so feel free to decorate it for any occasion.

I like the idea of using this “wishing wall” as a time capsule or inspiration board, kind of like a different way of doing a journal. Of course the savvy DIY-types could whip up something similar to this that would probably look better and would be cheaper.

  • Amazon Offers Publishers A New Option: DIY Apps

    Kindle KDK (Kindle Development Kit)

One of the biggest knocks toward Amazon’s Kindle has been the closed nature of the Internet-capable device. That starts to dissipate today with word from Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) that “later this year” the Kindle Store will start featuring “active content” produced by developers who can suggest their own prices and get 70 percent of the take after delivery costs. The Kindle Development Kit is already in use by a small group of developers including Electronic Arts (NSDQ: ERTS) and Handmark, which is building a Zagat app. Amazon is taking names for more to participate in a limited, U.S.-only beta to start in February.

Timed a week in advance of Apple’s anticipated unveiling of a tablet meant to compete on the e-book front, the announcement is the latest sign that Amazon wants to build a better image with publishers and make the device more useful to consumers—within its own limits, of course. Wednesday, the company unveiled a new royalty plan that lays out how publishers who publish e-books through Amazon can make 70 percent.

Developers can’t include “VoIP functionality, advertising, offensive materials, collection of customer information without express customer knowledge and consent, or usage of the Amazon or Kindle brand in any way.” They are also banned from offering a “generic reader.” But publishers who have complained about the way Amazon handles pricing would be able to develop their own active content and suggest their own prices. Amazon still keeps the customer relationships, though, which means this isn’t the solution Rupert Murdoch wants. The apps fall into three pricing categories:

Free: for apps that are smaller than 1MB and use less wireless data than 100KB per user per month. Amazon covers the costs.

One-time payment: The fee will be split 70-30, net of delivery fees of $0.15 per megabyte, The app has to be priced to cover the costs of downloads and on-going usage.

Subscription: Same split but for monthly charges.

The apps are limited in size to 100MB; anything larger than 10MB will have to be downloaded via USB, not wireless.

Ian Freed, VP for Kindle, told the New York Times he expects a wide range of programs, including utilities like calculators, stock tickers and casual video games, along with searchable e-books.  Amazon said Handmark is building an active Zagat guide, while Sonic Boom is building word games and puzzles.

In other Kindle news, it looks like Amazon is offering some heavy book readers the chance to try the e-reader under an unusual program. TechCrunch readers have spotted an offer to buy the Kindle, try it for 30 day and get their money back if they don’t “love” it. The kicker? They get to the keep the Kindle they don’t love—and the branded cover. The offer expires at midnight Jan. 25.

Short version: YouTube, change your tracking metrics so our label (EMI) will let our fans embed our videos again. Long version (after reading through the lines): the industry is completely broken, but we’re in too deep to walk away.

    From the link:

We’ve been flooded with complaints recently because our YouTube videos can’t be embedded on websites, and in certain countries can’t be seen at all. And we want you to know: we hear you, and we’re sorry. We wish there was something we could do. Believe us, we want you to pass our videos around more than you do, but, crazy as it may seem, it’s now far harder for bands to make videos accessible online than it was four years ago.

See, here’s the deal. The recordings and the videos we make are owned by a record label, EMI. The label fronts the money for us to make recordings – for this album they paid for us to spend a few months with one of the world’s best producers in a converted barn in Amish country wringing our souls and playing tympani and twiddling knobs – and they put up most of the cash that it takes to distribute and promote our albums, including the costs of pressing CDs, advertising, and making videos. We make our videos ourselves, and we keep them dirt cheap, but still, it all adds up, and it adds up to a great deal more than we have in our bank account, which is why we have a record label in the first place.

  • Google’s HTML5 YouTube Videos Don’t Need Flash [YouTube]

HTML5 is a major part of Google’s plans for the future, including Chrome OS—check out this interview for more on that—and one step towards that is getting YouTube to work without a Flash plugin, which they’ve now achieved. It’s not perfect yet (no ads or annotations) and it only works on certain supported browsers (Chrome and Safari, at the moment) but it’s still a taste of what’s to come. You can hit up TestTube to check it out. [YouTube]

Cass Community Social Services, a non-profit organization, started the nation’s first eco-gym facility in Detroit on Wednesday. This time, it is only for the homeless population of the region. It is beneficial both in terms of public service and toward the environment in the sense that it will not only help homeless people, but also reduce energy costs.
