  • Help me understand what happened to me

    This may get long.

I was an insulin addict. I was shooting up 100 R&N-Type combined in the AM. Then 100 R Type in the 6 o’clock zone, and 100R&N combined at bedtime. Always had great A1C’s

I was in hospital a week ago for hypotentsion and bradycardia due to renal failure. I was given insulin as I should have been between 1-5 units of r before meals (renal diet) and 3-4 on N in the a.m.

I got reasonable good readings highest 192 after a meal and as low as 120’s as well. I have been very strict about diet since leaving with much improved kidney function. I was also taken off a lot of antihypertensives atenolol and diovan and my furosemide was cut back 75%.

I am also keeping the insulin as at the hospital.

I am curious why I didn’t od from so much of the stuff. I ate like a horse and didn’t regulate diet wwhich explains why I was 300 pounds with swell a1c’s….I have resolved to come clean about this, as if I were fooling anyone to begin with, but curious what you folks might think.

    Thanks

  • YouTube Begins to Support HTML5

YouTube just announced that it will begin supporting HTML5 video players this evening across many of the videos on the site. The feature isn’t live yet but is expected to be within the next hour or two. If this test goes live site-wide, it will be a good thing for the web.

An HTML5 video player will allow videos to be viewed without Adobe’s Flashplayer plug-in, videos will load faster and developers will be able to build all kinds of other intriguing features into a media delivery scheme based on the next version of HTML.
For now users will need to sign-up the HTML5 preview on Test Tube and they’ll need to be using either Chrome, Safari or the Chrome frame in IE.

    Sponsor

The biggest benefit of HTML5 support is that it frees users from the need to use proprietary plug-ins like Flash player or Microsoft’s Silverlight by using a simple bit of code to render video. (Note this caveat regarding the lack of codec consensus, however.) If you’ve used Google’s Chrome much, you’ve probably seen how often Flash player crashes in that browser. Firefox doesn’t deal with Flash well, either.

HTML5 is being edited by Ian Hickson of Google and David Hyatt of Apple. Expect to see Google and Apple support this new standard all the more in the future so that those companies and others can build a web that looks more like Gmail on an iPhone than it does like a Flash landing page from the last decade.

  • YouTube Will Start Charging for Some Videos

Starting this weekend, YouTube will be dipping its toe into the waters of paid content.

This behavior follows a trend we’ve noted in traditional media outlets. First, media mogul Rupert Murdoch said no more freebies for search engines, then the New York Times hinted (and today confirmed) that users would have to start paying for a certain amount of access to articles. Now, YouTube is partnering with the Sundance Film Festival and filmmakers to charge users around $5 to view a range of movies from the 2009 and 2010 festivals. It’s still cheaper than a movie ticket – but is this a direction users will follow?

    Sponsor

Five Sundance films have been selected for this venture. It’s what we’d consider a test run to see how users will respond to paid content on the site, and whether this could be a new revenue stream for the web video giant, which has historically struggled with profitability.

The films include The Cove, an underwater adventure about dolphin capturing in Japan; Bass Ackwards, which chronicles an improvised road trip; Children of Invention, about two Bostonian orphans; One Too Many Mornings, a “coming of age comedy about two guys who are too old to be coming of age”; and Homewrecker, a comedy about a locksmith. The filmmakers will determine the exact asking price for viewing each movie, but all will be in the range of $5.

YouTube execs told USA Today the move is helping independent filmmakers find distribution avenues for their films. The movies will be shown without ads, which would be an aesthetic disaster for any director who chose to put his creation online.

What do you think: Would you pay $5 to watch an indie flick on YouTube? What other revenue models should YouTube be considering? Let us know in the comments.

  • Spredfast Fashions Social Media Into a Corporate Dashboard

Managing your social media presence at times seems like a full-time job, but for some people it actually is one. And professional social media-ites need professional-grade tools to do what they do. A new service called Spredfast, launching tomorrow from Austin, Texas-based Social Agency and already used by IBM, HP, AOL, the Sierra Club, Cisco, Intel, Monster.com and the Salvation Army, is a completely web-based social dashboard with more features than you can shake a stick at.

Spredfast, which Social Agency only first demoed for IBM last September, already faces competition from companies such as Objective Marketer, CoTweet, HootSuite, Ping.fm (now owned by Seesmic) and Involver. (Time to call it a sector!)

However, the Spredfast product, which costs $50-$100 per month per campaign, offers these key features:

    • It is multi-user, with multiple access levels, calendaring and scheduling tools.

    • It’s integrated with a whole bunch of services: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Flickr, with support for WordPress, Blogger, Moveable Type, Lotus Live Connections, Drupal and most XML-RPC-enabled blogging platforms. Users can respond to conversations from within the site.

    • It offers its own metrics system that helps you compare week to week how your brand or campaign is doing. So, for instance, getting a new fan on Facebook or getting a “like” on a post would earn you a point. Then you can see in a pretty chart how your engagement is trending vs. previous weeks.

Plus, said co-founders Kenneth Cho and Scott McCaskill, upcoming features include: importing conversion stats from Bit.ly links, exporting reports to PDF and email, and an iPhone app.

Cho and McCaskill, who started their business making Facebook apps three years ago and have bootstrapped since then, say their goal is to make Spredfast as full-featured as possible. Which is kind of crazy, when you consider it’s purely a web app for now — that’s an awful lot of enterprise-level integrations and controls and reports to cram into a few web pages. But considering the two have already gotten such high-level customers in the last four months, there’s definitely a market for this.

  • Should I Use IKEA Cabinets in My Kitchen? Good Questions

01-2010_01_21-IKEA4.jpgQ: My husband and I moved into a beautiful 1920s Craftsman last year and we love our home, but it needs a lot of work. We are planning a kitchen remodel this summer, with a limited budget and a laundry list of projects.

In order to get the most bang for our buck, I am toying with the idea of putting in IKEA cabinets instead of something more authentic and expensive. Is this sacrilege? I love our old cabinets and countertops but they are barely functional. Our drawers aren’t so much drawers as they are boxes stuck in holes. I long for something that will make better use of the space in our kitchen.

Who has experience with IKEA cabinets? Are you happy with your purchase? Will I be cursed for replacing something so old with something SO generic? Please help!

  • Robert Reich: The Voters Are Firing Obama Because He’s Flopped On The Economy

    robert reich

Liberal economist Robert Reich offers up some very useful analysis of the Massachusetts election, and what it means in the bigger picture:

Here’s what’s really going on. In Massachusetts, in New Jersey, all over the nation, voters are petrified of losing their jobs, their homes, and what’s left of their savings. Nothing counts more than the economy. Rightly or wrongly, presidents and the party in power are blamed when the economy is lousy. Voters fired Jimmy Carter in 1980 because the economy went south. They fired George Bush the first in 1992 because the economy was awful. They fired congressional Democrats in 1994 because the economy was still awful. And they’re in the process of firing Obama and the Democrats — unless or until the economy turns around.

Is any of this Obama’s fault? Not really.

We’ve never heard any credible plan that would have produced an immediate v-shaped recovery (not tax cuts, not more targeted infrastructure spending etc.), and we suspect anyone else who claims such a plan exists is being disingenuous.

That being said, Obama has promised better times, and they’re just not here yet. The whole “jobs saved” line is just a punchline.

But regardless, for the next 10 months, you can expect Democrats to go all-out with every throw-spaghetti-against-the-wall jobs programs they can think of. With healthcare out of the way, jobs will be everything, so watch for more moves like the Fannie and Freddie blank checks (quantitative easing in disguise), plus everything else.

Of course, there’s no easy answer, as Reich goes on to point out, the only real way to produce more immediate stimulus is more deficit spending, and now that will be harder than ever to pull off thanks to Massachusetts, and the fear that’s instilled in the conservative Blue Dogs.
