The Rock n’ Roll persona is still alive and well for fans of the Varvatos line. However, there is a certain vampiric quality to the range that makes the collection both rugged and romantic. The color palettes stay consistent with rust and concrete hues, and items such as blazers and suits are versatile enough for multilayer options. Wool suits stay neat, as well as outerwear that also comes in leather. If you’ve been a follower of the line for a while now, then this collection should definitely keep you grounded on Varvatos.

  • U.S. Army’s New Diesel-Electric Hybrid Takes the Stage in Detroit

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide and the U.S. Army TARDEC have partnered to develop the new Clandestine Electric Reconnaissance Vehicle.

The U.S. Army proudly showed off its new Clandestine Electric Reconnaissance Vehicle (CERV) at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last week, and let’s just say that on looks this diesel-electric hybrid can’t compete with eye candy like Toyota’s new FT-CH Prius concept. But, at least it gets you where you want to go – with a 25% reduction in fuel consumption.

As the owner of the world’s largest fleet of vehicles, the U.S. Army is on an all-out drive to adopt sustainable new fuels and hybrid technologies to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. • ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES’ PARTNERSHIP WITH REGIONAL ASKY AIRLINES HISTORIC…

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES’ PARTNERSHIP WITH REGIONAL ASKY AIRLINES HISTORIC, SAYS ETHIOPIAN FM

January 18, 2010 — Foreign Affairs Minister Seyoum Mesfin said the partnership between the Ethiopian and ASKY airlines marks the truly historic intra-African cooperation in the airline business

Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe lauded Ethiopia’s effort to advance the African aviation industry.

The Minister was speaking at the operational commencement of ASKY airline held in Lome Town recently. Seyoum, who is also chairperson of Ethiopian Board of Directors, said Ethiopian airlines and ASKY have entered into a unique form of business partnership and alliance to fill the void created by the absence of sufficient air transport service across many nations of the continent particularly in the central and west African region.

He said Africa lags behind in the development of transportation and communication infrastructure which is vital for the advancement of all aspects of life including industry, agriculture and education, among others. Seyoum expressed belief that ASKY will play vital role in bringing Africans closer to each other and to the rest of the world.

Seyoum said Africa needs to develop its aviation industry in order to accelerate its social economic progress and provide efficient service in global mobility for its people. The minister said Ethiopia is committed to do whatever it takes to support initiatives such as Ethiopian /ASKY partnership. Founder and ASKY chairperson of Board of Directors Gervais Koffi Djondo said Ethiopian airlines has remarkably contributed for the realization of ASKY. Ethiopian, which is the leading and exemplary carrier in Africa, has played significant role to commence ASKY’s operation as per the schedule.

Ethiopian has 25 percent share while African investors, regional economic blocs and African banks share the balance , he said and called up on stakeholders to make the ASKY effective in the business.

ASKY Airline CEO, Bussera Awol on the occasion said the ASKY airline has signed a five-year-long management contract with the Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s newest international airline. Ethiopian CEO, Girma Wake said despite addressing the West African air transport problems it would enhance air transport service in the region. Girma said Ethiopian’s dream to make hub in West Africa comes true through the commencement of ASKY. He said Ethiopia is benefiting Africa.

The commencement of ASKY airline indicates that Africans can work together. Meanwhile, Ethiopian has received from the Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe the Togolese medallion of honor at a ceremony held at Togolese National Palace . . Ethiopian Board of Directors’ chairperson and CEO have also received awards for outstanding performance of the airliner.

It was disclosed that Ethiopian has provided two Boeing 737 aircrafts and has trained 45 stewardesses for ASKY, which is established with 120 million USD.

  • I Gave My 3 Year Old an iPhone: Have I Created a Monster?

A few months back, my wife went on a girls’ weekend trip from East Coast to West, gone for a total of five days. I survived my first long stretch with our three year old daughter alone, but it wasn’t easy. At 43, I came to parenthood late in life, and I have to admit being a father is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. During my wife’s much-needed and deserved vacation, I perhaps relied a bit too heavily on the TV for entertainment and babysitting. But the TV gave me the few minutes throughout each day that I needed to get things done or just take a minute to myself.

When my wife returned, we settled back into our routine, consisting of 1-2 days per week when we eat dinner out as a family. These events can also be challenging, as our daughter is one of those kids who just cannot sit still for anything. She seems well connected to her surroundings and engages with us and others, but she is perpetual motion personified. So imagine my surprise when the littlest tornado actually sat in her chair for an entire meal!

My wife’s new secret weapon was a series of iPhone apps created especially for toddlers that one of her California girlfriends had recommended. The most popular with our daughter is Letter Tracer, which works as the name suggests. So my daughter was occupied by learning to write her letters. The device and screen provided the engagement that pen and paper hadn’t, and she delighted at being able to successfully trace all the letters of the alphabet, smiling and exclaiming “Look Daddy, I did it!” each time she completed a new tracing. My daughter was having a blast learning how to write her letters, and her parents were enjoying not just her growth but a nice restaurant experience as well.

As 2009 wound to a close, I engaged in my typical year-end organization efforts, scouring boxes and folders to discard what I didn’t need and properly file what I wanted to keep. When I found my original iPhone (16GB Edge; no 3, no G), my first thought was to sell it on eBay. I had great success selling an iPhone 3G on eBay, after all, getting $350 for one that had been exposed to moisture but was working perfectly. Then it hit me: why not load it up with iPhone apps for toddlers like Letter Tracer, put it in a heavy duty case with a screen protector, and make us into a three-iPhone family? Better, why not rip all the discs we use on a portable DVD player during long family trips, making it even easier to travel? My schedule didn’t allow me to finish configuring “her” iPhone before our trip to New Jersey for Christmas, but I was able to unveil it shortly after we returned, which turned out to be a good thing as I was home with our sick daughter the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

My three year old daughter now has her own iPhone, though without service so it is effectively an iPod touch. And how did I create a monster, you might ask? Easy. Her first words upon waking from sleep are “Where’s my iPhone?” Her reaction to her parents call to come to the dinner table, head upstairs for a bath or get ready for bed is to clutch her iPhone and cry. Even though I loaded her iPhone with some of her favorite apps from her mom’s phone (by re-downloading to our black Macbook, as I couldn’t get iTunes Home Sharing to work with my wife’s Macbook Air), she only really uses it to watch a small handful of videos that I ripped or downloaded. And she uses it constantly: sitting in a chair, laying on the floor, walking from room-to-room… head down, focused on the iPhone screen, it can be a challenge to get her to disengage with the device and engage with us.

So how can this be a good thing, or at least not bad? For one, I long ago read “Everything Bad is Good for You” by Steven Berlin Johnson, and take solace that her use of the iPhone at this early stage is at least teaching her some valuable skills, including human-computer interaction (for example, she is still mastering the art of touching a video then touching again on the appropriate icon to pause or play it). The videos I loaded are generally good quality educational content, so there are learning moments in them. And her ability to use the iPhone or not has quickly become the “carrot” and “stick” motivation we’ve long needed: she responds to our threats to take it away or promise to let her use it as with nothing that came before it.

As the novelty of watching videos begins to wear off, I expect our daughter to explore all of the possibilities that her iPhone offers. We’re already using the built-in clock to learn to tell time, Camera to take pictures, and Weather to see if it will snow today. I can imagine using apps like Best Camera to learn more about art and photography, or Vocabulearn Tagalog to learn her mom’s families native language (which I need to do before we go to the Philippines in a year or two). In the meantime, she’s already started to use some of the toddler apps I installed, like Kid Art, Voice Toddler Cards, and the Curious George Coloring Book.

The real challenge will be to help our daughter use her iPhone as an educational device, and avoid the trap of becoming too immersed to the detriment of social, motor, and other skills development. The real question is whether I’m a bad dad for giving a three year old an iPhone. What do you think?

  • Hybrids Versus Muscle Cars: What Do Americans Want?

I’m going to answer my own question and say both.

It’s true. According to Kelley Blue Book’s list of most searched cars, perennial favorites the Honda Civic and Accord topped the list. The Prius came in at #8, within spitting distance of the Camaro which came in at #12. In fact, if you look at the different lists from websites across the web, muscle cars are pretty consistently high on the search lists, as are hybrids and fuel efficient models like the Smart ForTwo.

So can America have its cake and eat it too?

  • Hydrogen Powered Truck for Sale

Now, how often have you seen a classified ad that says, “Hydrogen Powered Truck for Sale”? My guess would be never. But, that is exactly what this is.

Over the weekend, I received an email from Dan Greenberg  and he says he is selling a hydrogen powered truck.

Dan Greenberg, according to his Linkedin profile, is the former Director of Engineering and Product Development for a company called Hydrogen Power Incorporated. Dan says he was able to get his hands on this prototype vehicle when the company went under.

Under Greenberg, one of the techs used aluminum and water to generate H2 as I have outlined on my hydrogen on demand page. But, according to Mr. Greenberg, the hydrogen powered truck for sale has all the trimmings to run gasoline, compressed natural gas (CNG), compressed hydrogen (H2) or a blend of H2 and CNG (hythane) so the buyer will have many options. He currently runs the vehicle on CNG since there are no hydrogen fueling stations in his area of the country.

Here is some more info about the hydrogen powered truck for sale supplied by Mr. Greenberg:

    • Hydrogen Power 2006 Ford Ranger XL Extra Cab w/ 24,000 miles
    • It comes with a laptop and the software to program the ECO-Fuel bypass ECU that is installed.
    • A second set of gaseous fuel injectors is switched on and the stock gasoline injectors are switched of seamlessly “on the fly”
    • The vehicle has a timing retard module that can be switched on for driving on H2
    • You can program new fuel maps to optimize the fuel of choice.
    • Vehicle comes with more than $15,000 of professionally installed hardware.
    • 16 valve I-4 Duratech ford 2.3L engine (lots of sport extras available from Cosworth)
    • Two SCI 3600 psi tanks installed for 250 miles range on CNG or 90-100 miles on H2
    • Using a blend of CNG and H2 almost 300 miles is attainable

Since space is limited on this blog, here are even more details about this hydrogen truck for sale. Mr. Greenberg lives in the Seattle area and is asking $15,000 for this converted alternative fuel truck. For more info Dan Greenberg’s phone number is 206-854-9142. And, be sure to tell him where you first heard about his hydrogen powered truck for sale.

  • Nvidia GF100 512-Core Monster Graphics Card Previewed: Goodbye, Eyeballs [Graphics Cards]

The curtain’s been dropped on much of Nvidia’s upcoming Fermi-based graphics cards, and the five-hundred-and-twelve-core GF100 looks like a behemoth, indeed. A completely overhauled architecture is all about three things: scalability, parallelism, and geometry. Oh, and ripping your eyeballs out.

Tom’s Hardware, Anandtech, HotHardware and others go pretty deep on the new architecture, which is now eminently scalable. Here’s the overall structure of the GF100, which should give you an idea of the scalability—the GF100 is made up of four graphics processing clusters (GPC), themselves composed of four streaming multiprocessors (which are made up of 32 CUDA cores and texture units) and a raster engine:

To go deeper on architecture, you’re better off reading the 10-page reports from any of the sites linked above, but bottom line, Tom’s Hardware is predicting something like double the performance of Nvidia’s current GTX 285. Anandtech also points out that Nvidia’s geometry performance only went 3x between the NV30 engine in the ancient GeForce FX 5800 and current GT200 in the GTX 280, but the Fermi-based GF100 has 8x the geometry performance of the GT200. The endgame being that ” it allows them to take the same assets from the same games as AMD and generate something that will look better. With more geometry power, NVIDIA can use tessellation and displacement mapping to generate more complex characters, objects, and scenery than AMD can at the same level of performance.”

There is a cost. Even though it’s at the 40nm process, those 3 billion transistors are going to run hot, and the GF100 maybe the hottest single-card GPU ever. It’s also not going to be cheap. At all. [Tom’s Hardware, Anandtech]

  • Is Global Warming Man Made? by Girma Oressengo, MASc, PhD

Article Tags: Girma Orssengo, [email protected]

    article image

CO2 is known to be a heat trapping greenhouse gas. The theory of man made global warming assumes that the CO2 in the atmosphere (about 0.04% of air) that has increased due to use of fossil fuels by humans has been causing global warming.

In science, the method used to verify the validity of a theory is to compare the theory with actual observations. To verify the theory of man made global warming, we may compare the change in CO2 in the atmosphere to change in mean global temperature during the same period.

  • Apple Patent Applications Show Energy Efficient Devices [Apple]

Greenpeace awarded Apple as being the “most green” tech company the other week, so it’s not surprising two patent applications have been dug up from last May showing they aim to be even more energy-efficient.

Both patents, discovered by Patently Apple, show devices which save energy when charging from the socket. It’s not the usual Apple discovery—hardly a touch-sensitive iPhone—but it’ll be an ongoing issue for tech companies to face, so it’s not surprising they want in on it early.

While the above figures look a bit confusing, Apple’s basically saying:

“Some personal computers sometimes are being left on simply to serve as power supplies for the charging of the aforementioned portable devices via connections, such as Universal Serial Bus (“USB”) connections, that provide power in addition to data (rather than charging those devices from the household electric service using their dedicated chargers), even though the power supply of a personal computer is much larger than is needed for such a function, and as such draws much more power than such a function would otherwise demand. As the price of electricity increases, such uses of power can cost users more.”

Using an “Intelligent Power Monitoring” system, you could choose to charge your gadgets during off-peak hours to save money, or charge just a gadget attached to a laptop via USB, not the laptop itself.

The second, slightly-similar idea from Apple is called the “Intelligent Power-enabled Communications Port,” which involves a system that routes different amounts of power to various electronics being charged:

“Rather than continually upgrade standards such as the USB or FireWire standards, a variable power supply may be provided for the power conductor of a port.”

As with most patent applications, it’s all a bit vague thanks to a lack of detail, photos and motive—for example, it’s not known whether Apple would want to incorporate this technology into existing product lines, or launch a stand-alone energy monitoring device. The latter would hardly be in keeping with what they’re known for, but it’s not like we can ever truly be sure of what Apple’s going to do next. [Patently Apple via CNET]

  • Employees Losing Faith in Work, Finding a Higher Calling

The only thing harder than finding a job in this economy is finding one that you like, according to a recent survey that found only 45 percent of Americans are satisfied with their work.

Now the team behind the hugely successful Alpha course hopes to help Christian business leaders losing faith in work … to find a higher calling at work.

Planned for 16 cities in four regions throughout the U.S., Alpha’s Workplace Faith Gatherings will kick off in Dallas, TX, on February 23, then will continue to Charleston, SC, on Feb. 24.

These half-day events will feature talks from top business leaders, including Lou Giuliano, former chairman and CEO, ITT Industries, and popular author and speaker Os Hillman, founder and executive director of Marketplace Leaders.

Topics will include “Leading From the Front: Living Out My Faith in the Workplace” and “How Do I Make This Work? Connecting and Growing With Other Christians in the Workplace.”

“The Bible mentions work more than 800 times,” explains Gerard Long, executive director for Alpha USA.

“You’re not supposed to turn off a switch when you leave church on Sunday. God wants to walk with us 24/7 in every area of our lives – especially our work.”

Combining inspiration and practical application, these gatherings will help people to see work as a higher calling.

Long adds, “As people catch a vision for what God wants them to do and be in the workplace, it ultimately benefits society – stronger marriages, increased productivity, more service at church and in the community.”

During the Workplace Faith Gatherings, there will be many opportunities to network with other Christians in the marketplace. Additionally, participants can learn more about Alpha in the Workplace, a 15-session practical introduction to the Christian faith designed to fit with people’s busy schedules.

Does connecting faith and work contribute to job satisfaction? Ask Brad Jeffery.

As vice president of his Chicago-based chemical company, Jeffery offered Alpha at Work as an option for his employees. The results?

“We’d tried every technique over the last 20 years – corporate retreats, open book management, flex-time programs. These are beneficial, but they aren’t sustainable if you don’t have the right attitude and culture,” Jeffery explains.

He says that Alpha was a catalyst in “setting the tone for a culture that expanded the hearts of employees,” leading to community outreach efforts such as growing a garden for a local soup kitchen, starting a youth mentoring program and holding a picnic for a local orphanage.

“As you impact people’s hearts, it transforms into how they conduct themselves and helps them to be more satisfied at work,” Jeffery says.

Thousands of businesspeople all over the world are attending Alpha in the Workplace. Corporate CEOs are holding sessions in their boardrooms. Factory workers are running courses in their cafeterias … the options are unlimited.

More than 13 million people in 163 countries have attended one of Alpha’s courses.
