The planned introduction of the new Holden Cruze in Australia has been postponed by the Australian manufacturer by six months, pushing the launch in 2011 and leaving the current year with no major model launching. The most likely date the new Cruze will be available is now March 2011, with the main reason behind the delay being the fact that it was too hard launching the sedan before the hatch.

Allow us to clarify: the Tucker Torpedo Convertible we wrote about recently should herewith be referred to as the purported Tucker Torpedo Convertible. The droptop claiming to be a Torpedo will be up for auction in Scottsdale soon, offered by Russo and Steele. A note from the Tucker Automotive Club of America, however, states that it knows of no such car ever having been made by the Tucker Corporation. The statement says, in part:

“The Tucker Automobile Club of America, Inc. (TACA) has never been presented with-nor have been able to find-any credible evidence to prove the authenticity of this or any other vehicle as being a Tucker Corporation intended convertible and therefore we can not certify it as such.”

The club does not say that the convertible in question is definitely not a genuine Torpedo. The club’s position is that it has never been able to successfully prove the provenance of said car, “nor has the seller responded to [the club’s] request seeking the engine serial number and data plate information.” Without a single piece of documentation to support the car among the library of papers detailing Tucker’s rise and fall, about the only thing to say for it is: buyer beware. Gray Maynard thought he was ready to take on UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn but after last night’s win over Nate Diaz, he may have a few doubts. Mind games play a big part before and during a fight. Maynard, about as even keeled a fighter on the UFC roster, lost his head early against Diaz and his gameplan went out the window.

"He just tries to punk everybody. I was trying to keep it cool the whole time, the whole camp. I was a little pissed even before [saying to myself] he ain’t going to try and punk me."

As a result, all that great boxing and footwork Maynard exhibited during his wins over Jim Miller and Roger Huerta were replace by crazy roundhouses, lunging and poor balance.

His mentor Randy Couture said Maynard learned a lesson:

"You can’t let anybody get in your head. You can’t allow that to distract from your job, your goal or what you’re trained to do. He got caught up in Diaz’s attitude."

This might make Maynard a target in the future.

"There’s a lot of guys out there with an attitude and a persona. It’s easy to get caught up in that,. That’s what they look for, that’s what they want. They want you to be emotional. They want to quit thinking about beating them. He was trying rip his head off with one good one."

As it moved along the fight got sloppy and nasty with both fighters talking and gesturing a lot. It actually brought more than a few booes from the 8,500 in attendace in Fairfax, Va.

"It was more of a scrap," said Maynard, who apologized in the cage. "I was probably more apologizing to [my boxing coach] Gil [Martinez]."

Now what happens if Maynard gets Penn? Penn is great fight prefight and in fight trash talker. Couture pointed that maybe this was a good thing, to get these kind of shenanigans out of the way. 

A new study co-authored by Children’s obesity expert David Ludwig, MD, PhD, says that the majority of obese Americans will not lose a significant amount of weight unless there are serious societal changes concerning food. The article, published in JAMA, takes a look at the science involved in caloric intake versus physical activity and suggests that fundamental changes in America’s food supply and social infrastructure must take place in order to successfully take on the obesity epidemic.

For the technology industry, 2009 was a pretty tough year, but Forrester says the tech downturn is now ‘unofficially over’.

The research firm says the global technology industry will see an 8.1 percent increase in IT spending in 2010, with software and computer hardware leading the charge, and IT consulting services following.

After declining 8.2 percent last year, U.S. IT spending will grow 6.6 percent in 2010 to $568 billion, according to Forrester’s latest research report. Global tech spending, which dropped 8.9 percent in 2009, will rise to more than $1.6 trillion in 2010.

Forrester is particularly optimistic about IT spending of businesses and governments in the United States, with Forrester Research VP and principal analyst Andrew Bartels predicting a the tech recovery that will be stronger than the overall economic recovery, with technology spending growing at more than twice the rate of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2010.

Bartels said he sees 2010 as poised for a tech spending rebound and the start of a longer growth cycle, especially for technologies involving service-oriented architecture, server and storage virtualization, cloud computing and unified communications.

But the regions where growth is predicted to be the strongest in 2010 (when not measured against local currency) are Western and Central Europe, where tech purchases are forecast to rise by 11.2 percent, boosted by the dollar’s decline against the euro.

Forrester Research expects IT purchases in Canada to grow by 9.9 percent, Asia Pacific by 7.8 percent, and Latin America by 7.7 percent.

El día ha llegado, Fernando Alonso ha lucido por primera vez la equipación oficial de la escudería Ferrari. Ya podemos ir acostumbrando al color rojo ya que apartir de ahora será el que represente al piloto español. Por el momento Alonso no ha vestido el mono oficial sino el resto de prendas oficiales.

En fin, en definitiva esta noticia no es más que una curiosidad que todo el mundo esperaba con muchas ganas y es que la temporada 2010 cada vez esta más cerca y todos estamos deseando que los pilotos vuelvan a competir en el asfalto de los circuitos.

Como siempre, os mantendremos informados sobre el resto de novedades ya que aun quedan algunos asientos en diferentes escuderías que no tienen piloto.

In a note, RBS Analyst Chaytor focuses the sovereign CDS market and whether investors should be freaked out about rising spreads.

RBS: Always a dangerous question to answer so early in January, but the early signs are that sovereign risks are key. It is with extreme interest that I note that the iTraxx Western European Sovereign index is trading wide of both iTraxx Main and iTraxx Senior Financials. Ignoring the potential internal consistency in this (especially the latter) for another day it tells us that we (the market) have some real concerns about quite a lot of the sovereigns out there. This presumably stems from the difficult deficit positions that many countries have necessarily found themselves in following the measures taken to stem 2008’s economic catastrophe.
 
So, how worried should we be about this? At this stage, not a lot I think. The sovereign CDS market is a useful addition to the markets toolkit but it remains a small and illiquid market in relation to the key one – the bond market. CDS vigilantes are a growing and important force, but are as nothing compared to the potential return of the bond vigilantes. What we have to be focused on is whether these latter return. Not just because of the obvious impact it would have on government bond markets but the impact on all other markets. Whether you believe the risk rally is built on excessive liquidity or on the market pricing a return to decent growth rates, a higher cost of money would act to kill that off very swiftly.
 
So, the Q1 key theme is, I think, whether moves in the sovereign CDS world start to manifest themselves in the broader bond markets. We have seen this already in Greece, but it’s whether it hits the big economies such as the US, UK, Japan or Germany that is crucial. My central scenario is that it will not. That is why I am happy to be tactically long 10y Treasuries through this week’s supply as I said yesterday, a trade which is working and I would stick to. But let us keep a very close eye on key levels in government bond markets over the next few months; as if yields start to rise they could go a very, very long way. Being nimble is vital; luckily the government bond market is liquid enough to allow that.

It looks like Android-based mobile internet devices (MIDs) and ebook readers are going to proliferate the market this year.  We received an email this morning from a company called Delyca who informed us of an ebook reader that they were going to be releasing next month.    Called the S600k, it reminds us of the Amazon Kindle with its 6″ screen and full QWERTY on the bottom.

Much like other ebook readers, the s600k will hold around 3,500 books, periodicals, and documents.  The speakers (and Android) allow for music playing in the background while reading.   The email we received states  the 3G chip will give users the ability to download books right from the S600K, anytime, anywhere.  There’s no mention of any carrier partnership or subsidy.  We reached out to Delyca to get some more details on pricing and country availability.  As soon as we hear anything, we’ll be sure to pass it along to our readers. Our contact at Delyca says the units will sell for around $249.00 which is about what we’d expect.

Recent sales reports released by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) show that BMW Motorrad USA outperformed all of its competitors in 2009. Despite a US motorcycle market that declined 41 percent and lost nearly 360,000 units, BMW motorcycle sales only declined 22 percent, which was the smallest decline among all motorcycle brands.
