    The source of the confusion?

    It turns out that not even BMW’s spokespeople know that its Roundel emblem wasn’t inspired by a spinning propeller. It’s a common misconception, one that’s finally been cleared up by BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky, who explained that the company used to think its recognizable logo was tied to its aeronautical history. Plucinsky’s colleague Dave Buchko had initially told the The New York Times that the logo was intended as a stylized image of a spinning propeller before being corrected by Anne Schmidt-Possiwal of the BMW Museum in Munich. To his credit, Buchko did correct the error himself once the real story came to light.

    So what’s the real origin? It turns out the blue-and-white logo was used in a 1929 ad that placed roundels in the rotating propellers of an airplane. It’s easy to see where the confusion came from. The blue and white quadrants at the heart of the logo are actually intended to signify the state colors of Bavaria, and this isn’t the first time the logo’s origin has been examined in detail – historians have traced the logo’s evolution from the Rapp Motorenwerke all the way through today.

  • Synaptics shows off Fuse and Scrybe, new ways to interact with phones and PCs (video)

    synaptics fuseSynaptics came to the Consumer Electronics Show to show off Fuse, a new way to control a cell phone through the combination of touchscreens, force feedback, tilting, and 3-D graphics. It also showed off Scrybe, a new set of gestures that you can use to make things happen on your computer quickly and easily.

    Apple got us all used to the touchscreen swipe and the tilting control mechanisms with the launch of the iPhone. But now it’s time to move beyond that, said Andrew Hsu, technology strategist at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company, which makes touch pads, touch screens and other sensors.

    With Fuse, you can control a phone with a number of different methods, making it much easier to handle a lot of functions with just one hand. You can swipe across the multitouch screen. You can squeeze the side sensors to make balls come out of the middle of the phone, and the graphics show you the effect of squeezing the sides. Tilting lets you roll the balls in different directions. And swiping your finger across the back of the phone also lets you control things. This is what Synaptics calls a “multi-modal interface.”

    Moving beyond the touchscreen, Synaptics is introducing a new user interface for mobile phones dubbed Fuse — combining touch, force feedback, 3-D graphics, and grip and proximity sensing.

    Fuse is a result of collaboration between Synaptics and four partners: TheAlloy, The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), Immersion, and Texas Instruments. TheAlloy led the user experience and overall product design efforts. TAT enabled the effective 3-D environment and helped with the user interface. Immersion made possible the tactile feedback. TI’s OMAP 3630 processor provided the processing platform to handle things like graphics and imaging features. Synaptics, meanwhile, used its ClearPad, NavPoint, and TouchButtons sensor electronics in the design.

    Scrybe, meanwhile, is a collection of finger gestures that you can use as short cuts to get things done with your computer. It’s akin to fingerpainting. First, you tap on the touch pad to get a touch canvas on the computer’s touch screen. Then you can use your fingers to draw gestures to control functions on the computer. You can, for instance, draw an “@” symbol on the screen to launch your email. It’s another cool way that you can use simple gestures to replace lots of keystrokes. These aren’t products per se, but expect them to inspire the creation of a whole new generation of cool phones, computers and other gadgets. I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like Scrybe on Apple’s upcoming tablet, or on all of the other tablets that were displayed at CES.

  • Smart Bowling Ball Searches for the Perfect Technique [Bowling]

    The few times I go bowling each year are more about pitchers of cheap beer than they are satiating some desire for the perfect game, but nevertheless I’m intrigued by this “smart ball” from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

    Developed by sports scientist Franz Fuss, the smart bowling ball contains aluminum tubes in the finger holes that track the force a bowler applies to each roll. Fuss had ten bowlers of different skill levels bowl various shots down the lane, measured the force, and used it to try and find the perfect shot.

    The simple system found that the better bowlers were consistent (surprise!), in that they always pinched the ball with “much greater force prior to release.” This allowed for a much faster delivery than the newbs, and of course higher scores. [New Scientist]







  • CES: evoMouse Pet and Cube – new wireless mice and projected keyboard for Windows Mobile

    Here is another cool gadget to come out of CES. evoMouse has announced two new devices that bring wireless mouse and keyboard support to Windows Mobile. 

    The evoMouse Pet is the simplest, and resembles a small dog.  It uses two infra-red sensors to track your finger on a table, allowing you to use your finger to simulate a mouse.  You can click, double-click, right-click and drag with particular gestures,and on operating systems that support it even use multi-touch gestures.

    evomouse-launches-pet-and-cube-variants-1evoMouse Cube, the more advanced version, also includes a projected keyboard, which cope with up to 400 characters per minute. It also supports handwriting recognition.

    Both devices work over Bluetooth, charge via USB and supports a variety of operating systems, including Windows Mobile. The input devices can last about 2 hours per charge.

    Pocket-lint gave the devices a try and found they performed pretty well. Read more there for more pictures and their impressions.

  • Do You Daydream a Lot?

    To answer my own question, yes I do daydream a lot.

    Believe it or not daydreaming is a symptom of anxiety disorder and depression.  So chances are if you’re an anxious person you spend much of your time in la la land, fantasizing about a very cool version of yourself doing extraordinary things.  But why?

    Most shrinks think that daydreaming is a self defense mechanism.  Daydreaming is a form of escapism.  As you well know, when you have an anxiety disorder things can get negative and intense.  Not only that, but all that negativity can get strung out over weeks and even months at a time.

    As result, the brain cries out for a break and so it becomes very easy to drift off into a dream state.  Daydreaming is like a time out for your tired mind.

    There are two schools of thought on whether daydreaming and fantasy are a good or bad thing for those that suffer with mental ailments like anxiety disorder.

    On the one hand, you have those that say that daydreaming is bad because it distracts you from dealing with your problems and hinders you from correcting whatever is stressing you out.  They think it will only prolong and maybe even intensify whatever is troubling you.

    Then there are those that completely disagree with that view and find that daydreaming is actually healthy.  The thought is that daydreaming is a break from mental stress which can only be good.  And it’s also thought that daydreaming allows for creative thought and indirect productivity.

    So then, is daydreaming good or bad?  I think in moderation it is a good thing.

    When I was a kid I was sent home with notes pinned to my backpack that told my parents that I was constantly daydreaming.  I’ve had this love affair with daydreaming for as long as I can remember, but I was never less productive because of it.

    Even at work I find that I space out quite a bit.  I usually dream about being somewhere else, like a resort or something goofy that gets me away from any difficulty I’m having.  I don’t however plan my space time, it just kind of happens on its own.  But I also use that time to think about things to write about, and about other projects I want to develop so it’s not always frivolous.

    Did you know that they even have a personality type named for people that chronically fantasize?  Fantasy Prone Personality or FPP is a trait type describing people that experience their fantasies deeply and can sometimes cause them to get lost in their waking dreams to the point of having an out of body experience.  When I read that my first reaction was to think that the labeling of everything has gone a bit too far, but that’s just me I guess.

    Anyway, if you find yourself daydreaming a lot you’re not a weirdo.  You are simply trying to give your mind a break.  And as long as you don’t neglect your responsibilities go ahead and dream away.

    El grupo español Roig erigirá un centro cultural y comercial diseñado por César Pelli en el predio en el que estaba emplazada la antigua terminal de ómnibus. Desembolsará 23 millones de dólares
    El español Roig Grupo Corporativo e inversores argentinos desembolsarán 23 millones de dólares para montar un centro cultural y comercial en la ciudad bonaerense de Mar del Plata, informó el consorcio.

    El centro, diseñado por el arquitecto argentino César Pelli, se ubicará en la antigua terminal de ómnibus de la ciudad costera, uno de los principales destinos turísticos del país situado a 400 kilómetros de Buenos Aires.

    El predio incluirá un centro comercial, una sala de exhibiciones de arte, salas de cine, cocheras, espacios gastronómicos y terrazas al aire libre, precisó el grupo español en un comunicado.

    "Es una gran apuesta para nosotros, en Mar del Plata y en Argentina, adonde hemos llegado con mucha ilusión y deseos de promover emprendimientos a largo plazo", afirmó Emiliano Giri, director para América Latina del grupo, liderado por Francisco Roig, quien fue presidente del Valencia CF entre 1994 y 1997.

    La ex terminal de Mar del Plata será un centro cultural
    Un proyecto del renombrado arquitecto César Pelli es evaluado junto con otras dos propuestas

    MAR DEL PLATA.- El proyecto original es del arquitecto tucumano César Pelli, acostumbrado a obras monumentales como las torres Petronas y tentado ahora por un destino donde solía veranear con su familia durante su niñez.
    En este nuevo desafío, apunta a convertir el edificio histórico de la ex terminal de ómnibus en un gran y moderno centro cultural y comercial en el que el arte y la música tendrán un espacio privilegiado. Entre sus atractivos, anticipa el funcionamiento de una sede de la escuela de arte de Carlos Regazzoni que, además, donaría a Mar del Plata parte de su obra, que será repatriada de Francia.
    "El complejo será una gran expresión artística y el clima cultural de Mar del Plata tendrá una nueva dimensión, a la vanguardia de los tiempos", anticipó Pelli a modo de presentación de su propuesta que ya está siendo evaluada por las autoridades municipales junto con otras dos presentadas hasta el momento.
    La mudanza de la operatoria de los servicios de media y larga distancia, ahora con punto de arribo y partida en un nuevo y moderno espacio construido en el mismo predio donde funciona la estación ferroviaria, abrió un abanico de posibilidades para la emblemática construcción que ocupa parte de dos manzanas completas, delimitadas por las calles Las Heras, Alberti, Sarmiento y Rawson.
    El mismo edificio que hace casi un siglo fue sede de la Estación Sud de Ferrocarril ahora está cerrado y custodiado por personal policial, que lo utiliza como punto de encuentro para patrulleros que participan del Operativo Sol durante el verano. Reconvertirlo es la apuesta. Para unos, debía ser un centro cívico. Otros pensaron en potenciarlo como un gran espacio público y cultural.
    En esta última línea se instala Pelli, de máximo prestigio internacional, que acercó este proyecto para Mar del Plata a pedido de Roig Grupo Inversor, de capitales españoles y dispuesto a desembolsar en esta apuesta unos 25 millones de dólares. En la presentación de esta iniciativa y a través de un video se pudo escuchar al arquitecto: "La idea es preservar la estación y extenderla en un edificio muy contemporáneo", destacó.
    La edificación de lo que era la estación terminal de ómnibus tiene aún hoy, a pesar de algunos esfuerzos concretados en la fachada, una imagen muy precaria y con instalaciones deterioradas. La intención es recuperar el frente que da a la calle Alberti, que es patrimonio histórico y, a partir de él, avanzar sobre el resto del proyecto, que promete restaurantes, cafés, galerías, salas de cine, espacios para muestras, pantalla gigante y una gran plaza identificada con la música.
    Emiliano Giri, marplatense y director para América latina de Roig Grupo Corporativo, señaló además que se prevé dotar al edificio de generadores de energía eólica.

    Paredes con vida
    Los primeros detalles anticipan una edificación dominada por vidrios traslúcidos en tonos ámbar con paredes que, según Pelli, "tendrán vida" a partir de la aplicación de recursos. Sobre la intervención en el edificio histórico, asegura que permitirá que sea aún más parecido al diseño original que fue obra de su colega Jules Dormal. Giri anticipó que la obra se podría ejecutar en un plazo de 24 meses y que generaría mano de obra para unos 1200 trabajadores.
    Anoche, Regazzoni confirmó su participación en este proyecto y su decisión de instalar en este complejo cultural y comercial una escuela de arte. Pero también adelantó que donará a Mar del Plata, para exponerla en este nuevo espacio, la quinta parte de la obra propia que tiene en Francia. Se estima que representaría un aporte a la ciudad de casi cuatro millones de euros.
    Esta iniciativa privada ya está en despachos municipales para su evaluación. Casi al mismo tiempo ingresaron al menos otros dos proyectos para reconvertir la ex terminal. Uno de ellos, a cargo del estudio local Mariani-Pérez Maraviglia, responsable entre otras obras del Sheraton Mar del Plata, Aquarium, Los Gallegos Shopping y, actualmente, de la recuperación del Hotel Provincial.
    Fuentes de la comuna señalaron a LA NACION que podrían ingresar otras dos propuestas más y que la selección de la que resulte más conveniente se podría resolver a partir de un concurso integral de proyectos, con decisión que quedaría en manos de una comisión evaluadora integrada por calificados profesionales.

  • Members of Bnei Menashe (Indian tribe) to make aliyah


    Group claiming lineage to Lost Tribes of Israel set to immigrate to Israel after undergoing conversion in Nepal by teams from Rabbinical Court

    Some 7,200 members of Bnei Menashe ("Children of Menasseh"), a group of people hailing from north-eastern India who claim lineage to one of the Lost Tribes of Israel, will make aliyah after converting to Judaism in Nepal.

    According to a tradition that has been passed along for generations, the members of Bnei Menashe identify themselves as descendents of the Menashe tribe – one of the 10 tribes that exiled from Land of Israel at the end of the First Temple period.

    For the past decade, Shavei Israel Organization, which help Jewish people across the world immigrate to Israel, has been working with Bnei Menashe communities in India and building education centers where they can learn Hebrew and Judaism to help strengthen their Jewish identity and aid those who wish to immigrate to Israel.

    The organization, headed by Michael Freund, has also been working with the government in order to convince it to allow all the group members to immigrate to Israel.

    Currently, Bnei Menashe operates some 50 synagogues and has an umbrella organization that coordinates between the communities.

    Few members of Bnei Menashe have already made aliyah back in 1982 and some 1,250 members visited Israel prior to 2003 with the permission of the Ministry of Interior.

    In March 2005 Chief Rabbi of Israel Shlomo Amar recognized the affinity Bnei Menashe members have to the Land of Israel and decided that they must be integrated back into the Jewish people.

    However, Rabbi Amar objected letting the members immigrate to Israel prior to converting to Judaism.


    Conversion in Nepal

    Three years ago, teams of rabbis converted a few hundred Bnei Menashe members in India, however this caused a rift between the two countries after India claimed Israel is involved in missionary activity and religious conversion, which is forbidden by the Indian law.

    The proposed solution was to conduct the conversion in a different country. Nepal was chosen because officials in Israel did not think the Nepalese government would object to having the conversions take place on its territory and also because Shavei Israel already holds annual educational and young leadership seminars in the country.

    In addition, the route from northeast India to Nepal is fairly short and can be done via trains, and therefore does not pose a logistic obstacle.

    According to the plan, members of Bnei Menashe will travel to Nepal in groups of 200-300 people and then undergo conversion by teams from the Rabbinical Court who will be sent specially for the task.

    After the conversion process is complete, they will be allowed to immigrate to Israel with an immigrant visa. The government estimated that within one to two years, the entire community can be brought to Israel.

    The issue of Bnei Menashe was first brought to the public’s attention in 1996 after members of the community sent an emotional letter to then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which they pleaded for help.

    The letter was opened by Michael Freund, an immigrant from the United States who served as an advisor in the Prime Minister’s office and decided to take the matter into his own hands. Today he heads the Shavei Israel organization.

  • Sony’s Unannounced iPod/iPhone, DVD, USB, SD/MS Card Video Shelf System WHG-SLK1


    Sony showed off a pretty interesting shelf system during CES 2010 called the WHG-SLK1. It’s a slim and stylish shelf system with a 9″ LCD that has touch sensor buttons to the right side of the screen. I was surprised to read that it has 100W of audio power in the speakers, as the device isn’t that large. Some of the main features include the ability to play video content from DVD’s, a USB source, Memory Sticks and SD cards. It also can charge, play or control content from an iPod or iPhone. I also noticed a cool calendar and clock feature that really could make this a cool item for the living room, a guest room, or even the kitchen. The possibilities are really endless. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get more information on a release date or price, but I imagine it will be around $200.

    CES is over for CrunchGear (we’ll still be posting some stragglers today and tomorrw) but we’d like to reflect on the best gear we saw at the show. These few days flew by and even with the glut of 3D TVs and ereaders we were actually impressed by a few small, good things that caught our eye on the show floor.   • Rally: Not authorizing Falashmura aliyah crime against Zionism

    Hundreds of Ethiopian-Israelis gather in Jerusalem to protest delay in issuing of immigration permits to thousands of Falashmura waiting in Ethiopian transit camp. Minister Steinitz: This isn’t about skin color

    Some 500 Ethiopian-Israelis demonstrated outside the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem on Sunday and demanded that the government approve the aliyah of 8,700 members of the Falashmura (Ethiopian Jews) denomination.

    Thousands of Falashmura currently residing in the Gondar transit camp in Ethiopia are still awaiting permits to immigrate to Israel, this after the State promised last year to allow 3,000 immigrants into the Jewish state by September 2009.

    Protesters chanted, "End the discrimination" and "Bring mother and father to Israel now". They also waved signs reading, "Discontinuing aliyah – a crime against Zionism".

    Sahi Malato, an 18-year-old soldier, made aliyah along with her parents and two sisters five years ago. "I am a proud soldier who loves the country, and I hope the State will give something back to me and bring my three brothers, whom I haven’t seen in years, to Israel so we can all live happily here," she told Ynet while holding a photo of her family.

    Nibrak Amasgan, another protester, hasn’t seen her parents and brothers in 10 years. "My father is old; he cries whenever I call him and we miss each other. I ask that the prime minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) allow him to make aliyah," she said.

    During the rally, Interior Minister Eli Yishai (Shas) said, "I am determined to lead the struggle and conclude the deliberations by the relevant government offices. We’ll have to convince the Treasury, which opposed the (Falashmura aliyah) in the past."

    Knesset Member Shlomo Molla (Kadima), an Ethiopian-Israeli, told those on hand that "this would not happen to olim from other countries. We’ll continue with our struggle until the last of the Jews arrives in Israel."

    Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz (Likud) said the debate was not a budgetary one. "I don’t think the dispute surrounding the Falashmura aliyah has anything to do with their skin color; it is about the uncertainty as to whether some of them are in fact Jews."

    Earlier Sunday, Minister Yishai told the weekly cabinet meeting, "We must not leave the Falashmura there (in Ethiopia). I hear claims that had their skin color been different – they would have been treated differently."

    However, Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov (Yisrael Beitenu) said he feared some Falashmura were trying to take advantage of the right of return to Israel despite not being eligible to make aliyah.

    "As soon as the (transit camp) is vacated, (more Falashmura) arrive there. This issue must be examined thoroughly," he said.

    During the cabinet meeting Minister Misezhnikov also reiterated his call to cancel the visa requirement for Ukrainian tourists, a move he claimed was vital for the troubled tourism industry. He demanded that the issue be addressed during the next cabinet meeting.

    Minister Yishai is vehemently opposed to the move. "Ukraine is the hub of prostitution and human trafficking," he said recently.

  • Fotos de pueblos/ciudades nevadas o en pleno verano.

    Pues debido al temporal que hemos tenido en varios lugares se han producido estampas verdaderamente invernales. Quisiera, y si vosotros lo permitís con vuestra colaboración, crear este hilo donde podríamos poner fotos de lugares nevados. No tienen porque ser lugares conocidos, sino simplemente vuestras calles, lugares que han con las nevadas (o llúvias) han dejado una imagen peculiar.

    Tambié si queréis podéis poner fotos del mismo lugar pero con un clima más moderado para compararlas, o incluso en pleno verano donde ves como el aire caliente se mueve cerca del suelo…

    Por desgracia en donde vivo la nieve no ha durado mas de un par de minutos al tocar suelo, pero ha dejado una estampa preciosa de la toda Sierra Calderona que se puede ver al completo desde mi ventana.
