    SEPP SCIENCE EDITORIAL #2-2010 (Jan 9, 2010)

By S. Fred Singer, President, Science and Environmental Policy Project

[Note: This is the fourth of a series of mini-editorials on the “junk science” influencing the global warming issue. Other topics will include the IPCC’s Assessment Report 4, the UN Environmental Program, and some individuals heavily involved in these matters.]

    Junk Science #4: IPCC’s Third Assessment Report [IPCC-TAR, 2001]

In line with what seems to be an IPCC plan of claiming increasing confidence in AGW (anthropogenic global warming) with each successive report, the Summary of IPCC Third Assessment Report [IPCC-TAR, 2001] promised new information to support a conclusion of AGW. This new information turned out to be the “Hockeystick,” a dramatic graph that showed temperatures since 1000 AD steadily decreasing – until, suddenly, here was a huge warming in the 20th century. No trace of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and the Little Ice Age (LIA), so clearly shown in earlier IPCC reports and supported by both physical and historic data. [See figure in the pdf version]

  • BREAKING NEWS: NIGERIAN PRESIDENT IS BRAIN DAMAGED

    Yar’Adua is brain-damaged
    NEXT
    January 10, 2010 04:43PMT

    Quote:

President Umaru Yar’Adua is seriously brain damaged, is not able to recognise anyone, including his wife Turai, and can no longer perform the functions of the office of the president, according to multiple sources who have spoken to NEXT on Sunday.

But this fact, which has left a nation of 150 million people rudderless and its government in disarray, is being concealed from the public through an elaborate scam orchestrated directly and energetically by the First Lady.

Turai Yar’Adua has barred all but two security and one civilian aide, and a legislator from having access to the president in a two-tier power loop of which she is the organising principal. The inner core consists of the president’s chief security officer, Mohammed Tilde, and his military ADC, Mustapha Onoedieva; an infantry colonel from Edo State. Through Mrs. Yar’Adua, this small knot works with Shehu Inuwa Imam, a member of the House of Representatives from Katsina State who is the president’s childhood friend; Tanimu Yakubu, the president’s chief economic adviser; and Sayyadi Abba Ruma, the agriculture minister. She is also aided by Inuwa Baba, the senior private adviser to the president on protocol matters.

Mr. Baba is an old Yar’Adua family friend, so loyal that he once got into prison uniform to stay behind bars with Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, the elder brother of the current president. who died in Abacha’s gulag in 1999.

The group has blocked all direct access to the rapidly ailing president, said sources in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf region and in Europe and the US.

Despite several trips to Saudi Arabia, no other Nigerian government official, including the president’s principal private secretary, ministers, and governors, has succeeded in seeing the president, who vanished from our country 50 days ago and has not been heard from since.

    Grand deception

The people working frantically to keep up this ruse, including Mr. Yakubu, have also gone to great lengths to deceive the public, by claiming they have spoken to a president who is unable to speak and has lost all powers of cognition.

In fact, we can confirm that senior government officials lied when they claimed that Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, who is next in line to succeed Mr. Yar’Adua, has spoken directly to the president.

Although Mr. Jonathan subsequently went along with the charade, he has confided in several people in recent days that he did not speak to the president at all, according to informed sources. "He is trying not to create any friction because he knows he is about to become the next president," one source told our reporters.

In a telephone conversation with NEXT on Sunday, the Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, emphatically dismissed any notion that the president did not speak to any of the state officials. Mr. Aondoakaa said the vice president confirmed this claim himself that the dialogue took place,"No, that cannot be the case," Mr. Aondoakaa insisted on Friday.

Mrs. Yar’Adua now relies on an all-Saudi staff, including drivers, security personnel and others, in the hope that no Nigerian outside her Gang of Three on the ground in Jeddah can tell for certain what is going on. Such is the nearly impregnable ring of steel thrown around the fading leader that even his principal private secretary, David Edevbie, was unable to see him when he recently travelled to Saudi Arabia, ostensibly to get the "president" to sign the budget. We have learned that Mr. Edevbie was restricted to his hotel, where he received a visit from the president’s chief security officer, who collected the documents and subsequently returned them "signed."

    He may never come back

Even the president’s closest and most powerful aides have accepted that Mr. Yar’Adua may never return as president. "It is over for this president," said one source at the centre of the nation’s political firmament. "The question is when and how."

Virtually all those who spoke to NEXT did so on condition of anonymity, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding the president’s rapidly deteriorating health and their own political calculations during an inevitable transition.

While the end is virtually certain, several sources said the First Lady is hoping to hold off any acknowledgment of Mr. Yar’Adua’s incapacitation in the hope of lining up a friendly successor, including an effort to position Adamu Aliero, the minister of the federal capital territory and a close ally of the First Lady, as the new vice president once Mr. Jonathan steps up to the presidency as mandated by the constitution.

Other political forces, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as a claque of powerful former military officers led by Ibrahim Babangida, the former military president, are also pushing various candidates to be Mr. Jonathan’s deputy (see accompanying story.)

However, many see Mr. Jonathan, a colourless former governor of tiny Bayelsa state and an accidental vice president, as a mere transitional figure who will hold power only until the next elections are held.

By that calculation, the ruling People’s Democratic Party will honor its internal rotational arrangements to keep a northerner in the presidency for an additional term of four years. This would put a new vice president in pole position to become the PDP presidential candidate and be a sure bet to be the next president. The calculation is that, in Nigeria, votes do not count and the incumbent party is practically guaranteed to use every means to maintain itself in power.

In orchestrating her increasingly frantic efforts, Turai Yar’Adua’ has proved an enthusiastic user of email as well as sms messages to friend and foe alike. She, with the gang wound tight around the president, has been working hard to sell the candidacy of Ailero to be Jonathan’s deputy.

    A government in chaos

The cloak of secrecy thrown around the president’s status, and Turai Yar’Adua’s determined push for an ally to succeed her ailing husband, have thrown our government into chaos. "Nobody knows what’s going on," confessed one senior government official.

The cabinet, or federal executive council, is paralysed because it is in the dark. On a recent interview with BBC, for example, Ojo Maduekwe, the foreign minister, said, incredibly, that he had had "no cause" to speak to the president for the past six weeks! Information minister Dora Akunyili has issued statement after statement even though she has not had any contact with the president.

Yet the cabinet, which should by law start the process of declaring the president medically incapacitated, is refusing to lift a finger.

The sense of confusion has also stopped senior officials from coordinating their official actions. For example, according to our sources, Ahmed Yayale, the secretary to the government, had no idea that Mr. Edevbie had travelled to Saudi Arabia to try to see the president-until after the fact.

Even the security services are not immune to the governmental disarray. The director general of the State Security Services (SSS), Afakriya Gadzama is said to be angry that Mr. Tilde, the president’s chief security officer, is no longer taking his calls.

As an employee of the SSS seconded to be at the president’s side, Mr. Tilde is supposed to keep his agency in the loop regarding the president’s safety.

That even the SSS chief is kept out of the loop is particularly jarring. Mr. Gadzama is after all widely considered a trusted aide of President Yar’Adua. The two go back as far as their high school days at Barewa College, where Mr. Yar’Adua, then a house prefect, appointed Mr. Gadzama to succeed him in 1971.

"If Turai doesn’t trust Gadzama," said one source who is also a Barewa old boy, "that is how paranoid they have become."

This royal mess has left Abuja in a state of paralysis. "The government has ground to a halt," a senior official said last week. "Something will have to give very soon."

  • Coronation Street set to move to Media City

Article in today’s Observer: Demolition firm to take axe to Coronation Street

    Quote:

Britain’s most famous street is to be demolished. Coronation Street’s outdoor set, including the Rovers Return Inn, will move from Quay Street in Manchester city centre to a site near Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium after ITV resumed talks to relocate its offices.

Following the appointment of new ITV chairman Archie Norman, negotiations have begun again to relocate the soap’s famous pub and cobbled streets to the £600m Media City UK in Salford Quays.

The existing site has been the setting for some of the most memorable scenes in television history, including numerous arguments between Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner. With the advent of high-definition television, producers are keen to update the set as the new technology makes it easier to spot worn-out sets.

Tracey Barlow, the fictional daughter of the soap’s most enduring resident, Ken Barlow, murdered her boyfriend Charlie Stubbs on the street. It was also the location for numerous cat-fights, many of them involving Bet Lynch, the former landlady at the Rover and the street’s most famous pint-puller.

Bryan Gray, the chairman of the site’s developers, Peel Media, said: "ITV have a particular requirement in Coronation Street. I can confirm that e’ve offered them a package."

ITV’s veteran soap will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

  • China’s Draconian “Drug Treatment”

A new report this week from Human Rights Watch peers into China’s Draconian and ineffective incarceration of people struggling with drug addiction.

China has plenty of problems with its harsh, sprawling prison system, and its treatment of drug users is no exception. Police send drug users to mandatory “rehabilitiation centers” for a minimum stay of two years, without any trial or appeal. The conditions are deplorable, with no medical treatment for drug addiction at all, frequent beatings, inedible food and showers only once a month.

Human Rights Watch reports that at any given time, more than half a million Chinese citizens are subject to this treatment, for infractions as small as a single positive drug test.

  • What Are The Symptoms of Depression? (Clinical Depression-Major Depression)

Depression alters the way you think, feel, behave and also affects your physical well-being.

Depression affects your thinking in a traumatic way. Negative thinking, pessimism, is the characteristic of the depression. You may suffer from problems in concentration and decision making. Suffering from short termed memory, forgetting things and immoderate guilt may be experienced during depression. Besides, it is not uncommon and unheard that depression causes self destructive and suicidal thoughts.

A person who is depressed often feels sad and empty for no reason at all. The things you enjoyed and interested before, may seem no longer enjoyable. This may include your hobbies, going out with your friends, even sex. You may feel apathetic and become more apathetic day by day. Feeling “slowed down” and being tired all the time may experienced and during a more serious depression feelings turn into helplessness and hopelessness.

Changes in your behaviour reflect the changes in your thinking and feelings. You may become really apathetic and ignore your daily activities. Actually depressed people do almost nothing; they even ignore their basic needs like eating and cleaning themselves. Sometimes just going out of the bed may seem impossible. You may have also problems controlling outbursts of anger. Excessive crying, being antisocial and feeling not comfortable with other people is common.

All of these negative changes may cause physical problems as well. Sleeping problems is another characteristic of the depression. While some people spend most of the day sleeping, some people can not sleep soundly and stay awake for hours. Chronic pains, such as headaches, eating disorders –usually losing the appetite- are experienced during depression. However, physical problems are usually persistent and will not respond to treatment.

  • Five Best DVD-Ripping Tools

You pay good money for your DVDs, but they’re hardly the only format you need these days. These five ripping tools ensure you can back them up, keep them on your media server, and load them on your favorite portable player.

Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite DVD-ripping tool. We tallied up the votes, and now we’re back to highlight the five most popular tools used by Lifehacker readers to rip, backup, and encode their DVD collections.

    DVD Shrink (Windows, Free)

DVD Shrink is a free and capable ripping tool that excels at, as the name would imply, shrinking DVDs. DVDs come in two common formats: DVD-5 (4.7GB) and DVD-9 (8.5GB); the Reauthor mode in DVD Shrink helps you to ditch disc extras and strip most larger DVDs down to fit into a standard (and less expensive) DVD-5 disc. DVD Shrink does a good job handling many protection schemes, but hasn’t been updated to remove some of the newest schemes.

    DVD Fab (Windows, $50)

DVD Fab is a commercial DVD ripper that supports the removal of all current DVD copy protections. In addition to being current on protection schemes, it boasts a large array of options for stripping and repacking your DVDs once the copy protection is removed. You can rip the entire disc, rip only the main movie, or split it into pieces—among other options. Like DVD Shrink, DVD Fab also supports compressing DVD-9 discs to fit on DVD-5 discs.

    Handbrake (Windows/Mac/Linux, Free)

Handbrake is a DVD-ripping tool with a strong emphasis on not just ripping media but recoding it for playback on computers, portable devices, and other non-disc based systems. Handbrake can help you convert DVDs and other MPEG-based video into MP4 and MKV files. You can tweak settings like video frame rate and audio codec playback to your heart’s content with Handbrake, and even batch encode all your media at one time to make filling up your iPod or other device relatively painless. The one major shortcoming of Handbrake is that it doesn’t have any copy protection removal tools built in, which means you may occasionally need to use a 3rd-party stripping tool to prepare your DVD for conversion.

    AnyDVD (Windows, $60 per year)

AnyDVD is another commercial entry in this week’s Hive Five. It’s not cheap, with a one year license running $60—although the multi-year discounts quickly stack up—but it can boast that it stays on top of current protection and encryption schemes to makes sure you’re never locked out of your own discs. In addition to stripping protections from the disc, it also has the ability to control DVD playback speed so that DVDs played on media center computers will play slower and quieter, and it allows you to remove things like forced subtitles, warning screens, and disc material you don’t want.

    DVD Decrypter (Windows, Free)

Although DVD Decrypter hasn’t been updated since 2005, it still works on a significant number of DVDs and has a strong following resulting from both its original user base and new users who find it cuts through the copy protection on their current DVDs protected with CSS, Macrovision content protection, region codes, and other hindrances.

Now that you’ve had a chance to look over the five most popular DVD-ripping tools as nominated by Lifehacker readers, it’s time to cast your vote for the tool you like best:

    Which DVD-Ripping Tool Is Best?(trends)

Have a favorite that wasn’t featured or a tip for ripping DVDs? Let’s hear about it in the comments. If you have an idea for a future Hive Five send us an email at tips @ lifehacker.com with “Hive Five” in the subject line.

  • How do you eat low carb and heart healthy?

After of being in denial for 9 months, I am ready to make many of the necessary changes to be a healthy diabetic. I posted a thread last week asking about how many carbs I should eat with each meal. I am trying to stick to eating low carb foods, but many low carb foods seem to be like a heart attack waiting to happen. Will anyone give me a sample of what heart healthy meals they eat that are also low carb? I do not want to add heart disease to my many medical issues. BTW I have a major fish allergy and I despise eggs (unless they are baked in cookies, brownies, and cakes…which are not diabetes friendly). Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Clean Energy Technology Manufacturing

President Obama invests in clean energy business growth and job creation through $2.3 billion of Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits. This investment positions the United States to regain leadership positions in green technologies globally. The competition for the tax credits was intense as the program was significantly oversubscribed with cleantech manufacturing projects. …

… “The investment tax credits, worth up to thirty percent of each planned project, will leverage private capital for a total investment of nearly $7.7 billion in high-tech manufacturing in the United States. One hundred eighty three projects in 43 states will create tens of thousands of high quality clean energy jobs and the domestic manufacturing of advanced clean energy technologies including solar, wind and efficiency and energy management technologies. ” …

Via The Whitehouse: 183 projects, 43 states, Clean Energy

    Sample cleantech project:

Clean-Tech Manufacturing: “Solar Energy: PPG Industries, Inc. will produce a double anti-reflective coating for glass to make solar cells more efficient. At their Louisiana facility, PPG will produce a special tire tread component that reduces rolling resistance and improves fuel economy. Before the solar industry had begun, PPG pioneered the first low-iron glass that has been used in solar cells and on countless solar installations over the past two decades. Today, this credit will help to expand the manufacture of one of the critical components of glass solar cells, the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) coatings of the glass, without which the cells cannot function. ”

  • Ceftobiprole’s Long Road to Approval Gets Longer

Cephalosporins with activity against MRSA are out there, but we don’t have them yet.  Just recently, the leader of the pack, ceftobiprole, hit another roadblock:

The FDA has indicated in its Complete Response Letter to Johnson & Johnson PRD that it has completed the review of the application and has determined that it cannot approve the application in its present form … The Agency determined that data from Studies BAP00154 and BAP00414 cannot be relied upon because inspections and audits of approximately one-third of the clinical trial sites for these studies found the data from a large proportion of these sites to be unreliable or unverifiable, raising concerns regarding the overall data integrity for both studies

The recommendation from the FDA?  Do more studies.  (Which means more delay, more $$$.)

One of the great frustrations of antibiotic development is that there’s clearly a need for better drugs for MRSA — unlike, say, a new PPI — yet this pipeline has been pretty dry.800px-MRSA7820

In fact, I bet not a day goes by in medical centers that this need is not readily apparent to ID doctors, surgeons, intensivists, pulmonologists, nephrologists (don’t dialysis patients seem to have the hardest time with MRSA?), endocrinologists (except maybe for people with diabetes), transplant specialists.  Pretty much everyone knows this bug is common and hard to treat.

If we start with the premise that vancomycin is the gold standard — and a fairly tarnished one at that — what are our alternatives?  Linezolid was a big advance (especially because it can be given orally), but it was approved ten years ago, is bacteriostatic, has certain unavoidable toxicity issues, and is costly, especially compared to other oral antibiotics.  Daptomycin was a somewhat smaller step forward, and I confess I still haven’t had the occasion to use telavancin.  Trimethoprim-sulfa and tetracyclines are active, but likely less so than vancomycin.

And ceftobiprole?  The initial application to the FDA was submitted in 2007; it is already approved in several other countries.  And while I have no idea whether the efficacy and safety of the drug will be preferable to what we have now — perhaps someone from Canada or Hong Kong or Europe can clue me in — just having more options for MRSA seems like a very good thing.

No matter how lonely may depression leads one to feel, in most researches are seen depressive complaint 8- 20% in major depression level. It’s observed that major depression cases with genetic tendency are in highest level in ages 30s. The possibility of observation of life- long major depression in men is 2- 12% whereas in women 5- 26%. According to the researches it is stated that each year 247-598 women and 82-201 men are added per one hundred thousand people of major depression patients.

Women get depressed as twice as much men do. The reasons why they bare this high risk are partial hormonal changes in adolescence age, having periods, menopause and pregnancy.
Despite the fact that the depression risk of men is less, probably men in need of help are many in number. They show typical depression symptoms, however with respect to women they become much more quick- tempered and ready to attack or try to hide behind the mask of using alcohol and drugs. Suicide is a serious risk for men in depression and suicide cases are 4 times much more than those of women.
Old people may have to settle for a life alone and with the loss of their beloved ones. They may be in a situation that they are not physically capable of doing activities once they used to do. All these changes may contribute to depression. The beloved ones of theirs may relate these symptoms with the consequences their age brings along, already most of them are unwilling to speak of these symptoms. As a result, old people may not get treated for depression.

    Treatment

Antidepressant medications (depression treating medication) lead 60-80% of the patients recover. Treatment is long- lasting and the medication requires regular usage. It takes a couple of weeks for medications to make difference. For that reason, it’s totally wrong to stop taking medication after a couple of usage thinking it would not work. The effects of medications depend on person. Not any rule exists such as any medication is for any patient.
Furthermore side- effects depends on the medications. If a relative of yours has been through depression and recovered, the same kind of medication may be good for you. In some patients, usage of more than one kind of medication, usage of psychotherapy (therapy by professionals using special techniques in talking) along with medication or other methods may be required. Questions like which medication is good and what dose is fine are usually determined by trial and error. That’s why after you start with the therapy, do not lose touch with your doctor, have regular controls, avoid frequent doctor changes and remember that the treatment is long- lasting.
Researches revealed that by usage of medication along with psychotherapy, better results are obtained than of those by medication itself. The methods being used in depression treatment could be summarized as the following:

    -Antidepressant medications

    -Alternative psychotherapy methods

    -Group therapies

    -Electro- convulsive therapy

    -Phototherapy

    -Other methods

In the last group, there are some methods that are used practically but methods of which the benefits in scientific aspects have not yet been proved. Among them are techniques like usage of preparations involving B group vitamins and folic asid, acupuncture, therapy with music, therapy with herbal essences, exercises, massage etc. Whether these techniques are beneficial or not is not precise. That’s why it’s recommended that people suffering from depression should apply to a psychiatrist in the first place rather than choosing these methods directly. If any kind of a new treatment technique is considered for usage, again there should be an advice taken by an expert. Unnecessarily usage of a method may lead to loss of time and money, whereas it may hurt the patient.
