  • Arizona Speed Cameras May be Banished

Speed cameras, these automotive executioners hated by motorists all around the world, may be on the point of losing a battle on U.S. territory.

The state of Arizona, the U.S. pioneer when it comes to implementing speed cameras, may drop its previously praised state-wide speed camera network, as the New York Times reports.

The Arizona department of Public Safety introduced the system in late 2008 and a total of 76 of such devilish devices now threaten the motorists’… (read more)

Third in the series, the LG Rumor Touch keeps the sliding QWERTY keyboard of the Rumor 2 but sheds the front keypad, replacing it with a 3 inch WQVGA touchscreen. • Urban Wasteland: Tackling Energy Waste in Skyscrapers

We heard a lot last year about how improving energy efficiency was cheap, low-hanging fruit and how it was the best way to curb greenhouse-gas emissions. Break out your caulk guns!

    Brian Zak/Sipa Press
Morgan Stanley HQ, now with less energy usage

Frankly, it all sounded a little too good to be true. Without any big sacrifice or a change in lifestyle, less energy would be needed. Just keep your tires properly inflated. Oh yeah, targeting energy efficiency would create jobs also. A double shot in the arm for the ole economy!

Is there really that much waste? Consider the lesson of Morgan Stanley’s trading floors. At its global headquarters in Times Square, Morgan Stanley kept its trading floors at a nice temperature 24 hours a day, five days a week. Even at 3 a.m. Why push so much heat in during the winter – or cool air in the summer – in the middle of the night?

That was one of the questions posed by EnerNOC Inc., a Boston-based darling of the energy efficiency industry, after it began monitoring the 42-story building. Another finding: Morgan Stanley, which owns the building and occupies somewhat more than half of it, was keeping the elevator machinery rooms and other mechanical spaces as cool as the corporate suite. And the bathroom fans were running 24/7.

In all, EnerNOC said it found about $100,000 in savings for Morgan Stanley last year. (The Wall Street firm posted a $729 million profit in the first three quarters of 2009, so the energy savings are not a make or break figure.)

Morgan Stanley has “definitely recouped all of their investment,” says Tim Healy, EnerNOC’s chief executive. “They were ahead of the game within months.” Since he’s selling monitoring – not expensive new lighting or higher-efficiency furnaces – it was a relatively low upfront cost. (Morgan Stanley confirmed EnerNOC’s account of EnerNOC’s work and the savings uncovered.)

EnerNOC’s business is all about using information technology to monitor buildings and ferret out inefficiencies. Mr. Healy calls is data-driven energy efficiency.

“Let’s put a super computer inside that building that processes all the ways energy is being used, the way air is being used, the way lights are being turned on or off and try to optimize that,” he says. (No people wandering around the building with notepads are needed. The company can monitor carbon monoxide levels to figure out how many people are working in a certain space.)

He figures active monitoring of buildings to save energy will be a $30 billion to $40 billion market in the U.S. in a few years. That seems pretty bullish, but there are a lot of people who see a big potential in efficiency right now. In 2009, energy efficiency got $1.6 billion in venture capital and private equity investments, according to New Energy Finance, not far behind leading sectors wind ($1.75 billion) and solar ($1.74 billion.)

  • 2010’s Five Most Expected Automotive Comebacks

By now, there’s probably not even a single avid Internet user who is not familiar with the way 2009 has wiped the floor with most carmakers and pretty much everything related to the auto industry. The on-going economic crisis, coupled with a massive change in car buyers’ habits and bad management have taken their toll on two giant US car-companies, crippled a bunch of other foreign ones and in the end left a lot of people bitter and/or out of work. Quite a bummer, actually.

Texas coach Mack Brown planned to talk to Monroe and his family next week about his plans for the freshman when Brown returns from a recruiting trip, the American-Statesman reported, citing an athletic department spokesman.

“He’s extremely happy,” Monroe’s lawyer, Brian Roark, said, according to the Austin newspaper. “He is hoping to play in the national championship game and continue his career at Texas.”

Monroe was suspended indefinitely after being arrested on a drunken driving charge in November, hours after a win against Baylor.

Before missing three games, Monroe set a Texas record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns this season for the Longhorns. He also had 110 yards on 20 carries at tailback.

The second-ranked Longhorns will play the No. 1 Crimson Tide on Jan. 7 in the Citi BCS National Championship Game.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

  • Republican Senator Lindsey Graham Defects To Climate Change Activist!

    AP Lindsey Graham

Climate change has found the unlikeliest of friends in Republican senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, who has called for more federal control over greenhouse gas pollution, CleanTechnica reports.

In a speech on Tuesday, Graham expressed support for legislation to crack down on carbon dioxide pollution, which he believes will bolster the U.S. economy and simultaneously reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Graham has come under fire from his more conservative collegaues for his surprising position on the matter, but apparently is not backing down.

Talk about a switch hitter for the green team!

  • The Jay Leno Show Failed Faster Than the Stillborn Pilots It Was Supposed to Replace

The Jay Leno Show is over. NBC couldn’t make good TV. So it tried to give up on making good TV. It couldn’t even do that well. So now it’s giving up on giving up on making good TV, which is better. But here’s what I find so ironic. When the show was introduced in September, I wrote this:

NBC has screwed its own reputation handily in the past few years. Knight Rider? Lipstick Jungle? My Own Worst Enemy? These were powerfully horrible shows, and perhaps creative teams responsible for one
hundred days of Kath & Kim do not deserve a second opportunity on
    earth.

The Jay Leno Show premiered on September 14, 2009. NBC has decided to axe it after four months. Kath & Kim lasted five months. Knight Rider lasted six months. Lipstick Jungle lasted thirteen months. I guess the future of television is: Fail faster.

  • Marvel Disney matchmaker cashes in…

The news that David Maisel would be leaving Marvel (old ticker: MVL) once the deal with Disney (DIS) closed had been floating around since early December. Footnoted readers may remember that it was Maisel who met with Disney Chairman Bob Iger back in February and that a few weeks later buckets of options were granted to Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter.

Disney announced last week that the deal had closed. But Marvel waited until Jan. 6 to file this 8-K which had some details about Maisel’s reward, which worked out to just over $9 million, not including millions more in stock.

That’s not too bad of a reward for being a matchmaker.

  • Vanessa Hudgens Claims She Owns Copyright On Nude Photos Of Herself

As we’ve discussed in the past, the subject of a photograph does not have any copyright claim on the image. The copyright is, instead, granted to whoever took the photo (amusingly, yes, this means that if you hand your little point-and-shoot to a random stranger to take you photo while on vacation, technically, that stranger owns the copyright on the photo). This is something that people often confuse — as they assume that the subject has a copyright on the images. Copycense points us to the news that actress/singer Vanessa Hudgens isn’t just suing some blogsite for posting nude photos of her, but is claiming copyright on the photos, saying she took them herself. I haven’t seen the photos, so I’ll rely on the claims at that link that the photos show her posing, with no indication that she is the one taking the photos. It is possible that the photos used a timer, I guess, but other reports have said that the photos were cameraphone photos, which usually don’t have timers. As such, it certainly sounds like it might be a case of copyrfraud to falsely claim copyright on images where you do not, in fact, hold the copyright. That said, it’s hard to be sympathetic to a site posting nude photos of someone who does not want them posted — though, you have to admit that it’s odd that these photos were registered with the US copyright office.

  • Chrysler reveals slew of special-edition models for 2010

    2010 Chrysler 300 S8 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Chrysler has carefully picked its words, saying that the 300 S6 and 300 S8 are all-new models that build on the rear-wheel-drive sedan’s roots. Don’t fret, the cosmetic updates are welcome; there’s a new blacked-out grille this year and 20-inch alloys to fill out those classic bold wheelarches. The S6 and S8, while blatantly ripping off Audi nomenclature (do we smell a lawsuit?), denotes whether the car’s packing a six- or eight-cylinder powerplant.

Interiors have been updated as well, and the words that Chrysler chose to describe them make them sound like Xanadu on wheels. In the pictures, however, the changes appear to include more heavily bolstered seats with embroidered logos and leather and cloth surfaces. The dashboard and other surfaces don’t seem to be much different than what we’ve criticized in the past, though it could be the same design (which is fine) just rendered in improved materials.

Other vehicles are also coming in for a refreshing in 2010. The continually dead/not-dead PT Cruiser gets a Couture Edition with a dressed up interior and two-tone paint. The Town & Country Walter P. Chrysler Signature Series also looks to get much-needed interior attention, though we’ll only be convinced of its quality after running our mitts over the nicely-photographed wares.

  • Fixed-scheduled productivity

Fixed-scheduled productivity: “Fix your ideal schedule, then work backwards to make everything fit — ruthlessly culling obligations, turning people down, becoming hard to reach, and shedding marginally useful tasks along the way.”

A big part of this: saying no. The author gives Jim Collins as an example:

Even though Collins demands over $60,000 per speech, for example, he gives fewer than 18 per year, and a third of these are donated for free to non-profit groups. He doesn’t do book tours. His web site is mediocre. He keeps his living expenses in check so that he’s not dependent on drumming up income (he and his wife have lived in the same California bungalow for the past 14 years), and he keeps only a small staff, preferring to bring on volunteers as needed.

Also shows the freedom you get from having low overhead. The less you owe, the less you have to do things you don’t want to do.

  • The Nexus One and Google’s Mobile Strategy

Google’s much-hyped Nexus One has received generally positive reviews as a solid, if modest, improvement on the current lineup of Android phones. That kind of praise would be welcome by most handset manufacturers, of course, which are fighting for market share in an increasingly competitive field. For the Internet search giant, though, the Nexus One marks a very small step toward changing the mobile industry as it exists today. In a new research note on GigaOM Pro (sub. required), I take a look at how the Nexus One reinforces Google’s mobile strategy and reflects broader trends driving the industry toward greater openness. Key topics covered in the report include:

    • Google’s vision for the mobile industry
    • How federal regulation could play a role
    • Which players are most threatened and how to react
