  • Mariah Carey Sacks Paris Hilton From Music Video

Sacked By An Imperfect Angel! Paris Hilton has booted from a singing gig after music legend and notorious diva Mariah Carey refused to share the stage with the socialiate.

Paris was supposed to collaborate with MC on an upcoming video for Prince Azim of Brunei. Prince Azim, 27, who is the son of the Sultan of Brunei, had his heart set on both stars appearing alongside each other in a cameo in the vid to increase the success of the song — but once Mariah got wind of the plan, she hit the roof and demanded the royal make a choice, tattles told The Daily Star on Thursday.

  • Yahoo BOSS To Survive Microsoft Deal In Some Form; Details Still Hazy

After months of silence, Yahoo’s BOSS team is opening up to frustrated third party developers about the future of the powerful search platform. A few hours ago, Yahoo’s Ashim Chhabra left a post on the BOSS group forum, offering an explanation for why it has taken so long for Yahoo to relay information to developers, and giving them some idea of BOSS’s fate. The good news? BOSS will continue to live on in some form, but it’s unclear exactly how things will be changing and which services will be powered by Microsoft technology — and there may be fees involved. That uncertainly will probably leave some developers on edge, but at least they know the project isn’t being scrapped entirely.

Chhabra’s post was clearly prompted by the actions of some frustrated BOSS developers, who grew tired of being left in the dark and approached the Department of Justice to talk about how BOSS will be impacted by the Yahoo/Microsoft search deal. The DOJ heard their complaints, scheduling a conference call with them for next week. Chhabra’s post may help placate them for the time being. We’ve included his full post below:

    Folks,

Thank you for your feedback. We understand your frustration. This process has been long for all of us due to the complex nature of our agreement with Microsoft, and we appreciate your patience.

Under this agreement, Yahoo! is permitted to continue offering the BOSS web service, with search results that would integrate Yahoo! services and content with algorithmic results provided by Microsoft. As always, our intention is to provide a BOSS offering as long as it makes business and economic sense to do so. We are still examining what the BOSS offering will consist of, with some services powered by Microsoft, unique content that Yahoo! currently provides, and the potential for additional Yahoo! content in the future.

Prior to the announcement of the Yahoo!-Microsoft search agreement, we’d already shared our intention to explore a fee-based structure for BOSS. We continue to explore an appropriate fee structure or other revenue model as we work through the future of BOSS.

As you know, we must receive regulatory clearance before actual implementation of the search deal with Microsoft can occur. Only then can we finalize the future shape of BOSS. Of course, we will provide additional clarity and certainty when we can.

    Thanks for your attention!

  • Bomb threat forces City Hall evacuation

At 10:05 a.m. Thursday morning, the Palo Alto Police Department received a threat from an anonymous man who claimed that a bomb had been planted at Palo Alto City Hall that would detonate at 11:05 a.m. According to The San Jose Mercury News, all 350 employees were evacuated from the nine-story building at 10:40 a.m.

While there was no explosion at 11:05 a.m., bomb squads searched the building for about two hours. Speaking to The Daily about the bomb scare, Palo Alto Mayor Pat Burt stated, “There were not any indications that it was a serious one or a genuine one.”

He went to explain that the police conducted “a routine check to make sure that there was no legitimacy to the threat.”

The City Hall staff went back to work at 2 p.m. after the four-hour evacuation.

  • “Avenue Q’s” Princeton talks about life after college

Few musicals ever address themes like education, pornography, racism and homosexuality. Even fewer shows address these themes with an ensemble of puppets. “Avenue Q,” the Broadway show that has swept the nation, is coming to San Jose for a limited engagement from Jan. 12 – Jan. 17. Intermission got to sit down with Princeton, the star puppet of the show, and ask him what life after college is really like.

i: Is college really the happiest time of our lives? Is there nothing else to look forward to?

Princeton: College was a BLAST, it’s true. And since I graduated, life definitely has its share of ups and downs. But, something good is coming, I can feel it. You never know what’ll happen next!

i: What advice would you give to those who actually are getting their BAs in English?

P: Make sure the companies you work for aren’t laying employees off before their first day. That was rough.

i: Stanford is located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, where the Internet is being further developed every day. Is the Internet really just for porn?

P: Well, my neighbor, Trekkie Monster, seems to think so. And, for me, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t PART of my internet experience. But, I use it for other things too… I swear…

i: You’ve had your share of relationship problems. Do you have any love advice to give?

P: Honestly, I’m the last person to ask about love advice! No matter what I do, it seems like I’m always screwing up! I’m getting better, though… I think.

  • Apple’s latest patent probably isn’t tablet related, but feel free to speculate anyway

Apple's latest patent probably isn't tablet related, but feel free to speculate anyway
Yeah, we’re pretty sick of the iSlate talk too, so we’ll completely refrain from predicting any possible future applications for Apple’s latest patent, a new type of LCD circuitry that better integrates capacitive touch by somehow integrating touch sensitivity into the display pixels themselves. It’s pretty obscure, techy stuff, but the result should be less circuitry within the display in theory boosting efficiency and, notably, reducing thickness. You know what that means: even thinner tablets. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist.)

Apple’s latest patent probably isn’t tablet related, but feel free to speculate anyway originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 03:23:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

  • Waterfront Air to start flights to Macau

Waterfront Air to start flights to Macau
    07/01/2010 23:38:00

Seaplanes seem to be heading back to these shores after six decades. A local seaplane departing from Macau’s Outer Harbour in the 1950’s (file photo)
Waterfront Air looks set to finally start the seaplane services from China’s Shenzhen to Macau and Guangzhou in the fourth quarter of this year, the South China Morning Post reported.
Waterfront Air and Shenzhen Airport Ferry Terminal Services Co. signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday to provide services from the Shenzhen Airport ferry pier.
The company will lease a fleet of 18-seater DHC Twin Otter floatplanes for the flights. The flights would take about 20 minutes.
Waterfront Air plans to start seaplane services from Hong Kong to Macau, Shenzhen and Guangzhou next year, the report also said. The Chinese company has been planning to operate this service for almost two years ago.
In October 2008, it was reported that the firm, founded by Canadian entrepreneur Michael Agopsowicz, was planing to operate a scheduled seaplane service between a new Kai Tak Waterfront Aerodrome and the Pak On ferry terminal near Macau’s Cotai Strip.
It also plans to create a licensed water aerodrome opposite the old Kai Tak airport runway. Passengers would be taken to the Kowloon City ferry pier after the seaplanes landed.
At that time, the Tourism Commission and the Tourism Board gave their backing to the proposal because it would enhance Hong Kong’s appeal as a city with diversity and fun. But the project first needed to pass an environmental-impact assessment. The firm was planning to charge about HKD1,500 for a one-way trip, compared with HKD2,200 to HKD2,400 for a helicopter trip between Hong Kong and Macau or about HKD150 for a jetfoil. It plans to run 20 flights a day. The firm estimates 150,000 visitors will take the trips every year.
Recently, Waterfront Air’s founder and director Michael Agopsowicz told the media the company is still seeking permission from the authorities to construct licensed water aerodromes in all of the cities.
While there are extensive ferry and helicopter links between Hong Kong and Macau, he says that seaplanes tap into a different target market. “We eye the international travellers who want to add value to their trip, the affluent market,” he adds.

  • Prof. is first pediatric oncologist named ASCO president

A Stanford doctor has achieved a historic first in the medical community. Michael Link, M.D., a professor in Pediatric Cancer at the School of Medicine, is the first pediatric oncologist to be named president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

While the majority of ASCO presidents have been medical oncologists, who care for adults with cancer and who also make up the bulk of ASCO membership, Link’s election as a pediatric oncologist highlights the importance of children’s cases in cancer research and care, as well as the value of unity among all disciplines related to cancer.

“This reflects, I think, how pediatric oncology in many ways has led the whole field of oncology,” said Dr. Bertil Glader, a fellow professor and doctor in pediatric oncology.

“I couldn’t be more pleased or proud,” added Dr. Harvey Cohen, professor of pediatrics. “In my opinion, he is the best pediatric oncologist in the country.”

ASCO, an international nonprofit, dedicates itself to uniting cancer physicians and researchers to improve cancer prevention and care, as well as to educate physicians about the newest research developments.

Link looks toward assuming the role of president-elect in June, and he sees a particular opportunity for a global focus.

“It’s called the American Society of Clinical Oncology, but more than one-third of its members are from other countries,” Link said. “We can’t be so narrow-minded as to only focus on our own problems.”

While doctors have made significant advancement in furthering cancer technology, new procedures often remain unaffordable for developing countries. Many of the newest therapy technologies are not only extremely expensive, but also difficult to transport, and Link believes the ASCO holds a responsibility to pave the path toward greater equality.

“We can’t just be focused on the new, the more expensive, the most high-tech—we have to focus on the exportable,” he said.

In a nation engulfed in debate over healthcare, Link hopes to shape ASCO to encourage greater understanding of Medicare and Medicaid patients’ needs.

“We want to make sure these children have access to the best care, that that choice is made not on the basis of how expensive it is, but on quality,” he said.

On the other hand, he added, “We don’t want to advocate doing things just for the sake of doing them.”

Several other doctors from Stanford have served as ASCO president before, and Link’s colleagues from the Stanford School of Medicine are thrilled about his ascendency.

“This is kind of a situation where the student does better than the teacher,” said Cohen, who taught Link as a student and resident. “He has always been brilliant, and he asks incredibly good questions. He’s done earth-shattering work with children with cancer.”

“We should all be honored—this is a great tribute to his accomplishments,” Glader said.

An active member of the ASCO for years, Link has served on several committees and is currently an associate editor for the organization’s Journal for Clinical Oncology. Yet, Link says pediatrics have provided his driving passion ever since his medical school days.

“You develop a very intense relationship with the family,” he said, “taking them through a dark hour and hopefully bring them back into the light, bring back a cured child. It’s the most satisfying thing you can imagine.”

For Link, the combination of working with children in a scientific environment and fostering lifelong relationships with the whole family proved “almost an irresistible combination.”

Link sometimes hears from his patients years later as adults, and several have even become doctors themselves. “What more fun could there be?” he asks himself.

The detoxing process is hard especially after being dependent on a substance (whether it be alcohol or drugs) on a daily basis. Watching this process for non-celebs would be entertaining especially seeing how they all deal with withdrawal. But the celebs they have lined up for this season will make it all the more interesting.
Dr. Drew is back with a new season of Celebrity Rehab – kicking off tonight at 10 p.m. on VH1. (You can watch the whole first episode online here.) This year’s cast includes some higher-profile names like Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss, Mindy McCready, and Tom Sizemore. Plus Mackenzie Phillips seems to not have had enough time in the spotlight. (I don’t know if I can handle getting to know her better than we did on Oprah last year.) McCready recently gave us a preview of her time on the show.
According to VH1, this season’s show (which airs tonight at 9 CST) will follow these in-desperate-need-of-help public figures:

Heidi Fleiss, Dennis Rodman, Mindy McCready (country music singer), Mackenzie Phillips (One Day At A Time),Lisa D’Amato (America’s Next Top Model), Mike Starr (Alice in Chains), Kari Ann Peniche (ex-Miss United States Teen) Joey Kovar (Real World Hollywood), and Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan).

Calgarians Against Proroguing ParliamentCanadians Against Proroguing Parliament

Calgarians Against Proroguing ParliamentCanadians Against Proroguing Parliament

Here is a photo my hand-delivered letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office. I’ve included the text here for the record.

Letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper re his decision to prorogue Parliament

    Jan 7, 2010

    Dear Prime Minister Stephen Harper,

I am deeply saddened as a Canadian, as a Calgarian, and as someone living in your riding for years to see you’ve chosen to suspend democracy and Parliament (prorogue Parliament).

As a trained economist and as Prime Minister of Canada, I trust you are a reader of the internationally respected and independent “The Economist“. Let me quote from its Jan 7th article “Canada without Parliament – Halted in mid-debate” (emphasis added),

THE timing said everything. Stephen Harper, the prime minister, chose December 30th, the day five Canadians were killed in Afghanistan and when the public and the media were further distracted by the announcement of the country’s all-important Olympic ice-hockey team, to let his spokesman reveal that Parliament would remain closed until March 3rd, instead of returning as usual, after its Christmas break, in the last week of January.”

I have highlighted various parts of The Economist article and attached to this letter with added notes for your reading pleasure.

As a Calgarian and Canadian, I see it as my duty and responsibility to rally on 23rd January, 2010 alongside my fellow Canadians from sea to sea to protest your action to prorogue the Parliament.

Allow me to quote “The  Economist” once more,

The danger in allowing the prime minister to end discussion any time he chooses is that it makes Parliament accountable to him rather than the other way around. […]

Whether Mr Harper gets away with his innovative use of prime ministerial powers depends largely on whether the protest spreads and can be sustained until Parliament reconvenes in March. Mr Harper is doubtless counting on the Winter Olympics to reinforce Canadians’ familiar political complacency. But he has given the opposition, which is divided and fumbling, an opportunity. It is now up to it to show that Canada cannot afford a part-time Parliament that sits only at the prime minister’s pleasure.

For the sake of democracy and our shared love of Canada, I hope Canadians will rise up to protest and to rally until you realize you were wrong.

Mr. Prime Minister, you’ve exercised your power, at all cost, to shutdown the Parliament. It leaves me no choice but to protest and rally along my fellow Canadians on 23rd January, 2010 and take necessary and sustaining peaceful actions until our democracy is restored.

    Yours truly,

    Kempton Lam

    Calgary, SW

P.S. I hope you will forgive me in not able to spend more time in writing a more forceful and better-crafted letter as I do have others things to attend to.

[rewrite — P.S. I hope you will forgive me in not able to spend more time in writing a more forceful and better-crafted letter as I do have to work, unlike you and your privileged colleagues can prorogue your work.]

P.P.S. I’ve also enclosed a highlighted copy of The Economist’s “Harper goes prorogue – Parliamentary scrutiny may be tedious, but democracies cannot afford to dispense with it” for your reading pleasure.

  • REUTERS: Cadbury to focus on value in final Kraft defense

(Reuters) – British bid target Cadbury (CBRY.L) will paint an upbeat picture for 2010 and upgrade 2009 forecasts next week in a final attempt to fight off a hostile bid from Kraft Foods (KFT.N), analysts said on Friday.

But a small rise in Kraft’s hostile 10.5 billion pound ($16.8 billion) bid will be enough to win over Cadbury shareholders, most analysts and investors believe, even if good Christmas trading and cost cutting allow the confectioner to beat its guidance for underlying 2009 sales growth and margin.

“The key will be what Cadbury can say to boost the long-term strategic value of the business and how much more Kraft will be willing to pay,” an industry analyst said.

Cadbury is likely to upgrade previous forecasts for a 2009 operating margin of 13.3 percent and underlying sales growth of around 5 percent, analysts said, adding they will be scanning what it says about sales, margins and input costs for 2010.

The company is due to give the bulk of its final argument for staying independent on January 12, the 39th day of Britain’s 60-day takeover process but the Takeover Panel has allowed Cadbury to provide extra detail shortly after the London market closes on January 14, given the proximity of its December 31 financial year end.

Termed Cadbury’s second response document after its first defense statement in mid-December, Cadbury is expected to focus on its position after Christmas trading and Kraft’s bid.

Kraft’s cash and shares bid, launched in September, has gained in value over the past few days as the U.S. food company’s stock has risen and the dollar strengthened to make the offer worth 768 pence against a Cadbury share price down 0.1 percent at 776 pence by 8:20 a.m. EST.

Many analysts and investors say Kraft will have to raise the bid to at least 800 pence to succeed. It has until January 19 to change its bid while Cadbury shareholders have until February 2 to accept.

“The focus will be on the value of Cadbury rather than looking for any white knight bidders,” said another analyst.

Earlier this week, Swiss food group Nestle (NESN.VX) ruled itself out from a Cadbury auction while hopes have faded for counterbids from Hershey (HSY.N) and Italy’s Ferrero, who have both expressed interest.

Ferrero’s interest in Cadbury has cooled, sources familiar with the situation said on Thursday, while analysts say it will be difficult for Hershey to mount a bid without the potential financial backing of Nestle.

Kraft chief executive Irene Rosenfeld has stuck to her guns, refusing to increase the overall price of the Cadbury bid since it emerged in early September, while Cadbury chairman Roger Carr has been equally firm in rejecting the bid, terming it derisory.

Rosenfeld’s predicament was highlighted this week when Kraft’s biggest shareholder, Warren Buffett, told her not to overpay with a large issue of new Kraft shares.

Cadbury has already forecast 2009 sales rising 11 percent to 6 billion pounds, underlying operating profit up 24 percent to 794 million, and EBITDA 21 percent ahead to 1.004 billion.

It has also forecast underlying 2009 sales growth in the middle of its 4-6 percent target range and an operating margin of 13.3 percent from 2008’s 11.9 percent. Analysts say these figures could be upgraded to as much as 5.3 percent and 13.6 percent.

Last month, Cadbury announced longer-term targets to look for annual sales growth of 5-7 percent from 2010, operating margins to rise to 16-18 percent by 2013 and double-digit dividend growth for 2010 and beyond.
