  • Celebrity Rehab, Celebrity Rehab Season 3 Cast 2010 Live

Watching this process for non-celebs would be entertaining especially seeing how they all deal with withdrawal. But the celebs they have lined up for this season will make it all the more interesting.Kari Ann is a former Miss Teen USA who was stripped of her title when she stripped off her clothes for Play Boy in 2004. She was recently under Dr. Drew’s care on Sex Rehab and proved to be the problem child. Like many of the Sex Rehab patients, she was molested as a child. But her mind seemed to have stuck in that time. On the show she was extremely childish and it was hard to believe that she was 25 years old. She was so much to handle that she was kicked out of the program. I have no idea what makes them believe that this will be any better.Heidi Fleiss, Dennis Rodman, Mindy McCready (country music singer), Mackenzie Phillips (One Day At A Time),Lisa D’Amato (America’s Next Top Model), Mike Starr (Alice in Chains), Kari Ann Peniche (ex-Miss United States Teen) Joey Kovar (Real World Hollywood), and Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan).

  • Mcelroy Alabama Rhodes Scholar 2010

College football pundits say the title game’s McQuarterback matchup clearly favors Texas. Yes, the Longhorns’ Colt McCoy has won an NCAA-record 45 games, but McElroy, a junior, hasn’t lost as a starter since the eighth grade.

Fittingly, the Rose Bowl represents center stage for freckle-faced, 21-year-old McElroy, the longtime understudy.

At Carroll he played behind Chase Daniel and didn’t start until his senior season, when he led the Dragons to a Class 5A state title.

At Alabama, McElroy redshirted his first season, then backed up John Parker Wilson in 2007 and 2008. Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy isn’t quite setting himself up for canonization, but he is a damn good student, already graduating with another year of eligibility left. He has made all As and one B in obtaining his degree in marketing. He also appears to plan on returning for his last year with the Crimson Tide. But, that doesn’t mean that he’s not already thinking of the future. He wants to study at Oxford.

“I’m actually applying next year,” McElroy said. “I didn’t want to apply and miss a year of football if I was picked. But we’ll see what happens. I wanted to obviously approach it and look into it because it is such a great honor.”

Obviously, it isn’t easy. Only two people drawn from Alabama, Florida and Tennessee will get the coveted scholarship any given year. But if Mark Ingram can win the Heisman, who says McElroy can’t snag a Rhodes Scholarship next year?

    Biofuels from Engineered Tobacco Plants?

A biofuel is tricky to define because the usual fossil fuel we use, is in a way biofuel too. But we can safely say that most of the biofuels don’t add up their quota of carbon dioxide to the environment. The biofuels are therefore considered to be “CO2 neutral.” Researchers from the Biotechnology Foundation […]

  • Editorial: Part Two, the Environmental Plan of Action

If the American people will not make economic sacrifices to hedge against global warming, they must be convinced that they will not have to, or better yet, that actions will reap benefits. Current proposed legislation certainly fulfills the first claim–making a barely noticeable economic impact. Paul Krugman–a Nobel Laureate and Princeton economist–uses a Congressional Budget Office estimate to project that the bill would only reduce annual economic growth between now and 2050 from 2.37 percent to 2.32 percent.

That slight hit could be converted to a major economic boost through one change to the proposed policies: robust federal investment. President Obama’s original request for $15 billion in annual investment for clean-energy development, recommended by a group of 34 Nobel Laureate scientists, has been considerably weakened. It must be reinstated. Yes, the federal budget is strained, but these investments are vital for American competitiveness and would pay back many times over.

Energy efficiency would be the most obvious place to start. A recent McKinsey study showed such investment could save the United States $1.2 trillion by 2020, freeing up money businesses would use to create many more jobs.

Renewable energy also holds massive potential for economic growth. With a global population that will hit nine billion by 2050 and standards of living rising around the world, demand for energy will skyrocket past its current supply, global warming or not.

If the United States does not rise up to fill this market, other countries will. China plans to invest $660 billion in clean energy over the next 10 years and is already beginning to dominate the industry. American inaction would mean continued reliance on imported energy, millions of lost jobs and another blow to a frail economic foundation. Federal investment in research and development, as Fareed Zakaria notes in Newsweek, has brought us the Internet, lasers, MRIs and DNA sequencing. It can bring us renewable energy, too.

Ideally, a cap-and-trade would mandate emissions cuts and finance such investment. Such is the case in Denmark, where they have cut carbon emissions by 14 percent since 1990 while increasing GDP by 40 percent and fostering a thriving clean energy industry. And those who claim cap-and-trade would cost American jobs ought to check the unemployment rate in Denmark: an astonishingly low four percent.

But if the political will for this cap-and-trade ‘sacrifice’ does not exist in the United States, then energy investment should garner bipartisan support, improve the economy and make a significant impact on the climate problem. Thomas Friedman, Zakaria and commentators around the country have started trumpeting this idea, originally popularized by the Breakthrough Institute think tank: Going green can pay. And only when the American people believe this will solutions follow.

  • BMW X6: laptop rubbish according to Clarkson

A coupe, with high driving position and off-road capabilities…? The BMW X6 always looked like a ridiculous car to me, and I’m happy to have Jeremy Clarkson confirm this for me. The SAV (or Sports Activity Vehicle) has plenty of BMW class and technology, with two petrol and two diesel engine options, and the buttons in the interior to boot. But apart from that, this is an unimpressive effort from BMW, where they’ve tried to do too much in one vehicle.

For example, what is the point of a coupe and a jeep all in one if the back passengers wanting to enjoy the off-road experience can’t fit in properly because of the sloping roof line…? What’s more, trying to drive the X6 is very complicated once you’ve figured out what the computer display system is actually saying, the direction in which the gear change is supposed to work and which steering wheel paddle you use to shift up or down (apparently you can do both with both…). In Clarkson’s words: “What was the boss of BMW doing when all the clowns in the laptop department were coming up with this rubbish?” See it all in the video.

  • How To Create A Hackintosh Install USB Flash Drive On the Easy

Last year some time I first got my Dell Mini 9, and proceeded to hack it with Mac OSX. Not because I like OSX per se, but because I heard I could do it, and wanted to try it out.

When I first installed it I followed the instructions from Gizmodo on installing OSX on my Dell mini. The instructions were fairly straight forward, but still kind of a pain in the butt.

The other day a friend of mine showed me a utility that will take all of the real work out of turning your netbook into an ultimate Hackintosh bad boy toy!

There is a Google code tool called Netbook Bootmaker. You use it to make a bootable OSX install USB Thumb Drive! It currently works with both OSX Leopard (10.5.6 – 10.5.8) and OSX Snow Leopard (10.5.6 -10.6.x)! Currently, here are the supported netbooks:

    • Acer Aspire One D150
    • Dell Mini 9 / Vostro A90
    • Dell Mini 10v
    • Lenovo S10 2
    • HP Mini 110
    • Samsung NC-10

The cool thing about the Netbook Bootmaker is that once you create your install DVD it will work on any of the above netbooks! No muss, no fuss!

    What you will need:

    • Retail DVD of OSX
    • A USB Thumb drive with at least 8GB of storage
    • A Mac/Hackintosh already running OSX

That last bullet point kind of sucks, but the Netbook Bootmaker is an OSX application, and will not run on Windows. Once you have what you need, do the following on the computer already running OSX:

    • Download the Netbook BootmakerHackintosh_by_3LgoRdo
    • Insert your retail OSX DVD
    • Insert your USB Thumb Drive
    • In Finder, click on Go > Utilities > Disk Utility
    • Click on your Thumb Drive and select Restore
    • Drag and drop your DVD to the source
    • Drag and drop your USB to the destination
    • Check the box to erase, then click restore
    • Go make some coffee, because this will take a while
    • Once complete, open up Netbook Bookmaker
    • Select your Thumb drive from the drop down
    • Click Prepare Boot Drive
    • Done!

Now when you are ready to install OSX on your netbook, just boot up to your thumb drive, and go through a typical install! After everything is installed on your new Hackintosh, go into your utilities and run the Netbook installer app to make sure everything is working right. It literally couldn’t be any easier!

Do you know if a similar utility to create an easy bootable USB for Hackintosh that will run on Windows? Let us know in the comments!

  • Climategate and the Migrating Arctic Tree Line by Dexter Wright, AmericanThinker.com

    Article Tags: ClimateGate, Dexter Wright

One of the more enlightening e-mails to spill out of the Climategate scandal is a report on the progress of Siberian fossilized tree ring work. The report, dated October 9, 1998, focuses on some two thousand samples of fossilized trees thirty-three nautical miles north of the present-day Arctic Circle. The report attempts to correlate the migration, north and south, of the tree line with annual tree ring dating so that an actual year can be assigned to a certain location of the Arctic Circle. The report correctly states that there has been migration of the polar tree line over the past several thousand years, but the investigators attribute this migration singularly to the cold tolerances of tree species.

Although the botanists are correct that cold tolerance does affect the northern limit of trees, they incorrectly attribute the migration solely to variation in climatic temperatures. This is only part of the answer. The other part lies in the in the geographic fact that creates the Arctic Circle in the first place.

The location of the Arctic Circle is a function of the tilt of the Earth’s axis, which is approximately twenty-three and a half degrees (23.5o) from the orbital plane of our planet. This is why the Arctic Circle is at sixty-six and half degrees (66.5o) north latitude, exactly 23.5o south of the North Pole, which is at ninety degrees (90o) north latitude. But this angle of axis tilt has not always been 23.5o.

  • Major Tel Aviv Disaster Drill Planned For Next Week

The Defense Ministry in cooperation with the Health Ministry and IDF Homefront Command will be staging a major mock disaster drill in Tel Aviv next week, a drill simulating a biological attack with over 1,000 victims. The drill will be a major barometer of the ability of the three agencies to work with one another. The ministry states the drill will not have any major impact on the lives of area residents, but it may result in a noticeable increase in activity in area emergency rooms.

The drill will take place on Wednesday and Thursday (13 and 14 January), and it will primarily test the abilities of three major hospitals, Tel Hashomer, Ichilov and Wolfson, which will accept the victims. There will also be three major staging stations, the Country Club in Holon, Winter Stadium in Ramat Gan and Beit Danny in Tel Aviv. According to Brigadier-General Ze’ev Shnir, the exercise is to focus on the nation’s ability to cope with a biological attack.

Shnir explains the biological threat is one of the threats faced by the nation, and it is incumbent upon the system to evaluate its abilities against this threat

  • Depoliticizing the Weather Forecasters by Dr. Tim Ball, Canada Free Press

    Article Tags: Tim Ball

Bureaucracy, the rule of no one, has become the modern form of despotism – Mary McCarthy

Exploitation by governments of global warming as a vehicle to take control requires drastic reaction. As climate became a political issue, bureaucrats in all countries expanded their role, became political and excluded independent experts.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was set up for the political purpose of proving human CO2 emanating from developed nations was causing global warming. It continued as a political process as one of the leaked emails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) from Mike Hulme to Phil Jones on April 22, 2002 notes, “All these decisions about IPCC chairs and co-chairs are deeply political (witness DEFRA’s support of Martin Parry for getting the WGII nomination).” We must eliminate the IPCC as the most corrupt, and then urge all countries to reduce weather agencies to data collection only. Any weather or climate related government agency must be reduced to a single function, the accurate collection, storage, and accessibility of data for citizens. Weather forecasting is so unreliable and inadequate nobody would suffer from its loss. If forecasting is essential companies can do it themselves or see a business opportunity. Piers Corbyn, a British climatologist consistently produces accurate weather forecasts months in advance for all regions of the world.

  • Keanu Reeves Paternity Suit Dismissed

An Ontario judge has dismissed a multi-million paternity suit against actor Keanu Reeves. The Matrix star was sued by a Canadian woman who claims Reeves fathered her three adult children. Keanu, on the other hand, vehemently denies ever having met the woman. Karen Sala sought $3 million a month in spousal support, retroactive to November 2006, and $150,000 a month in child support, going back to June 1988.

A DNA test proved Reeves was not the father of Sala’s adult children, who are between 21 and 25 years old. Sala disputed the DNA results in court Thursday.

“I do know for a fact that he is the biological father,” said Sala, who represented herself, adding that she has proof but cannot show it to the court.

In her affidavit, the unemployed homemaker suggested Reeves changed the test results with the uses of hypnosis. Sala also believes Keanu disguises himself as different people, including her now ex-husband, who Reeves’ lawyer Lorne Wolfson said is the real father, as is stated in documents in their divorce proceedings.

Sala insists Reeves grew up down the street from her and she has known him since she was four or five. She did not connect him to the actor until much later because she knew him by the name Marty Spencer, she said. Keanu grew up in Toronto.

Sala maintains she had an affair with the star throughout her marriage, that they lived together and that he was present at the birth of her children.

  • Burning Man 2010 Art Grants

In case you didn’t know, every year, Burning Man awards grants to artists to fund artwork for the playa.  Yep, a portion of your ticket money goes directly to creating some of the amazing pieces of art that grace Black Rock City.  Not bad, ‘eh?  Right. So, thank you!

Our lovely and charming Grant Committee has sent us the following to relay to would-be submitters of grant proposals, and we thought it only right to pass it on to you.  They say:

Hear ye! Hear ye! The Burning Man grant committee is now accepting applications for the 2010 grant season. In an effort to make the process easier, we’ve created a new format — an editable PDF. It asks all the same questions and requires the same information as we have always wanted, but now in a simple form. You can learn more and access the new PDF here. This new format is the new, mandatory format for applying for a grant. The deadline for grant application si 11:59 pm February 1st. This is a hard deadline — no late submissions will be considered. You can read more about it here.

Also as part of this year’s grant season, Burning Man is soliciting applications for the plazas — the 3:00, 4:30, 7:30 and 9:00. We’ve set aside some funds from our grant budget to cover these locations. It’s a unique opportunity to create something interactive, something thought-provoking, and something fun in the neighborhoods of Black Rock City. There have been amazing pieces in the plazas from such award-winning artists as David Best and Charlie Smith, and the pieces have been as thought-provoking and whimsical as Black Rock City has ever seen … like Bruce Bender’s “Ketchup!” for instance.

    Ketchup

    Ketchup by Bruce Bender

In addition, we are asking for grant applications for the Cafe portal. The Cafe ‘Front Portal’ Art is a specific art installation positioned just in front of the entry to the Café as it faces The Man. Though named the Front Portal, it is NOT necessary that this Art be a portal, arch, gateway or similar shape. See below for images of some Portal pieces from previous years. This is the first year we are including the process for selecting the Café Front Portal Art in the larger grant cycle – in the past these artists were hand-picked by Café leadership by virtue of their familiarity with the Café and prior playa works. Since 2000 (when David Best created the first Front Portal) the art location has evolved  away from the structure itself, with large-scale Art proudly marking the front entrance to the Center Camp Café.   This is notto be confused with the Keyhole location, the Front Portal is quite close to the Café structure. The Cafe portal position is a place of honor in front of the Cafe. Here are some images of previous Café Front Portal Art pieces:

2008: The Curmudgeon by Michael Taluc

2007: Bike Rack (aka Bike Arch) by Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector

2006: Leaping Giants by Dan DasMann and Karen Cusolito

2005: The Ancestors by Marlene Kryza

2004: The Sirens by Rosanna Scimeca

2003: Cafe Portal by Michael Christian

    Illuminated Arch by Finley Fryer

Don’t forget our grant deadline is February 1st. We look forward receiving your grant applications!!

  • ‘Iron dome’ rocket defense system: aparently a success !

Successful testing of Iron Dome rocket defense system and Egypt’s construction of anti-smuggling steel wall threatens Islamist group’s power.

Gaza’s Hamas rulers have suffered back-to-back setbacks with Israel’s successful test of a rocket shield and Egypt’s push to block smuggling tunnels.

The Iron Dome rocket defense system, reportedly to be deployed near Gaza in May, would deprive Hamas of its main leverage against Israel – the threat of rocket salvos. Egypt’s underground anti-tunnel barrier of steel beams, now under construction, could eventually cut Hamas’ supply of cash and weapons.

The looming double squeeze is poised to limit Hamas’ options and change the rules of engagement on Gaza’s volatile, blockaded borders.
