NBC Considering Booting Conan & Sending Leno Back To “The Tonight Show”
NBC executives met with Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien Thursday to talk about the future of the network’s late-night lineup, The New York Times is reporting

Although NBC denied a report that it is scrapping The Jay Leno Show, The Peacock is reportedly considering several moves to address the poorly rated 10 PM program, including cancelling the show, moving it to a different timeslot, and revamping its entire late-night lineup:
NBC executives held discussions with both Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien Thursday about the future of the network’s late-night lineup. And while executives said that no final decision has been made, they did not deny that the network is considering moves that could include returning Mr. Leno to his old job as host of The Tonight Show.
A spy told The Times no official decision would be announced Thursday.
Network suits, on the other hand, say they are committed to keeping both Conan and Jay on board at NBC, saying: “We have the best comedy team in the business. We remain committed to keeping Conan O’Brien on NBC. He is a valued part of our late-night line-up, as he has been for more than 16 years and is one of the most respected entertainers on television.”
What do you think NBC should do, folks? Is it time to pull the plug on The Jay Leno Show?

1 "My Favorite Way" Black Drawing Chalks

Miami – Land Shark Stadium addition (aka Dolphins stadium)
I thought there was a thread having to do with Dolphins / Landshark Stadium but I can’t seem to find it.Quote:

Dolphins unveil designs for stadium makeover
With a square roof and an open center, a new Miami Dolphins stadium could help lure more Super Bowls to South Florida. Should the public pay for the construction effort? The team would like an answerBY DOUGLAS HANKS
[email protected]The Miami Dolphins proposed an extensive retrofit of the team’s stadium on Thursday — including a partial roof — and invited a debate on whether the public should pay for the renovation.
Without the new 621,000-square-foot roof and other modifications, the Super Bowl may not return to South Florida after its played at the stadium Feb. 7, Dolphins CEO Mike Dee said at a press event. He declined to estimate how much the retrofit would cost or commit the team to paying for any of it. Two local Super Bowl organizers earlier put the price at between $200 million and $250 million.
The presentation set the stage for the stadium to pursue public dollars as local and state leaders grapple with grim budget shortfalls. But even after Thursday’s presentation, it was unknown what exactly the Dolphins wanted in terms of public financing.
Dee said the Dolphins do not need the stadium improvements for regular season games, and that it was up to local Super Bowl organizers to decide if the renovations are worth pursuing. Rodney Barreto, chairman of South Florida’s Super Bowl Host Committee, declined to say which public funds he might pursue.
Dee and Barreto tied the renovation with the economic windfalls that come with Super Bowls and other large stadium events, including Orange Bowl and World Cup soccer.
“This is Corporate America at its best. They’re going to be here wining and dining,” Barreto said of Super Bowl’s deep-pocketed visitors. “The worst thing we can do as a community is to say — and I hear this often — `Don’t worry. It’s coming again.”’
Dee said the team has not calculated how much the construction would cost. He also said he had no suggestion for where to find public dollars for the renovation, saying the team “would leave no rock unturned” in searching for a way to get the work done.
Asked if the Dolphins would invest in the effort, Dee said it was too early to say. But he noted previous owner Wayne Huizenga had spent about $250 million in recent years on renovations to the privately owned stadium — work that current owner Stephen Ross paid for in buying the team.
“We’re talking about Phase Two” of the renovation Huizenga began, Dee said.
Tourism officials oppose using hotel taxes to fund stadium improvements at the expense of local convention centers. Miami-Dade commissioners last year pledged hotel taxes to more than $300 million in debt for a new Florida Marlins baseball stadium.
The plans Dee unveiled would bring the biggest change to the Dolphins home field since it opened as Joe Robbie Stadium in 1987. Four spar-like pylons would jut from the stadium corners to support the square roof, resembling bridge spans from the highway as spectators approached Dolphin Stadium.
The roof itself would allow natural light and rain in through the open center, but would cover all 75,000 seats. That would prevent the sort debacle that still makes organizers wince: the 2007 deluge that soaked spectators at the 2007 Super Bowl championship at the stadium.
Along with new stadium lights, the Dolphins would add about 3,000 seats in the lower bowl — filling up the space by the sidelines needed to accommodate a baseball field when the Marlins moved in 17 years ago.

Any Area Of Your Body Can Be Tightened By A Cosmetic Surgeon With Body Contouring Procedures
A body lift procedure is very similar to a face lift. The only difference is that it involves the center of the body. A body lift, specifically is the surgical contouring of the abdomen, thighs, arms, and breasts in order to remove hanging, excess skin. The cosmetic surgery procedure itself is designed for people that have lost a large amount of weight either through gastric bypass surgery or through exercise and dieting. A significant loss of weight will often leave people with excessive, saggy, and unsightly skin that does not conform to their new, thinner figures. Another candidate for a body lift is a person who has excessive, sagging skin as the result of either the normal aging process of pregnancy. As people age, their skin stops producing collagen, proteins, and elastin that are needed to keep skin toned and tight.

Hmmm. You think its a coincidence? Costa Rica is one of the very few countries to have abolished its army, and its also arguably the happiest nation on earth.
There are several ways of measuring happiness in countries, all inexact, but this pearl of Central America does stunningly well by whatever system is used. For example, the World Database of Happiness, compiled by a Dutch sociologist on the basis of answers to surveys by Gallup and others, lists Costa Rica in the top spot out of 148 nations.
Thats because Costa Ricans, asked to rate their own happiness on a 10-point scale, average 8.5. Denmark is next at 8.3, the United States ranks 20th at 7.4 and Togo and Tanzania bring up the caboose at 2.6.
Scholars also calculate happiness by determining happy life years. This figure results from merging average self-reported happiness, as above, with life expectancy. Using this system, Costa Rica again easily tops the list. The United States is 19th, and Zimbabwe comes in last.
A third approach is the happy planet index, devised by the New Economics Foundation, a liberal think tank. This combines happiness and longevity but adjusts for environmental impact such as the carbon that countries spew.
Here again, Costa Rica wins the day, for achieving contentment and longevity in an environmentally sustainable way. The Dominican Republic ranks second, the United States 114th (because of its huge ecological footprint) and Zimbabwe is last.
Maybe Costa Rican contentment has something to do with the chance to explore dazzling beaches on both sides of the country, when one isnt admiring the sloths in the jungle (sloths truly are slothful, I discovered; they are the tortoises of the trees). Costa Rica has done an unusually good job preserving nature, and its surely easier to be happy while basking in sunshine and greenery than while shivering up north and suffering nature deficit disorder.
After dragging my 12-year-old daughter through Honduran slums and Nicaraguan villages on this trip, she was delighted to see a Costa Rican beach and stroll through a national park. Among her favorite animals now: iguanas and sloths.
(Note to boss: Maybe we should have a columnist based in Costa Rica?)
What sets Costa Rica apart is its remarkable decision in 1949 to dissolve its armed forces and invest instead in education. Increased schooling created a more stable society, less prone to the conflicts that have raged elsewhere in Central America. Education also boosted the economy, enabling the country to become a major exporter of computer chips and improving English-language skills so as to attract American eco-tourists.
Im not antimilitary. But the evidence is strong that education is often a far better investment than artillery.
In Costa Rica, rising education levels also fostered impressive gender equality so that it ranks higher than the United States in the World Economic Forum gender gap index. This allows Costa Rica to use its female population more productively than is true in most of the region. Likewise, education nurtured improvements in health care, with life expectancy now about the same as in the United States a bit longer in some data sets, a bit shorter in others.
Rising education levels also led the country to preserve its lush environment as an economic asset. Costa Rica is an ecological pioneer, introducing a carbon tax in 1997. The Environmental Performance Index, a collaboration of Yale and Columbia Universities, ranks Costa Rica at No. 5 in the world, the best outside Europe.
This emphasis on the environment hasnt sabotaged Costa Ricas economy but has bolstered it. Indeed, Costa Rica is one of the few countries that is seeing migration from the United States: Yankees are moving here to enjoy a low-cost retirement. My hunch is that in 25 years, well see large numbers of English-speaking retirement communities along the Costa Rican coast.
Latin countries generally do well in happiness surveys. Mexico and Colombia rank higher than the United States in self-reported contentment. Perhaps one reason is a cultural emphasis on family and friends, on social capital over financial capital but then again, Mexicans sometimes slip into the United States, presumably in pursuit of both happiness and assets.
Cross-country comparisons of happiness are controversial and uncertain. But what does seem quite clear is that Costa Ricas national decision to invest in education rather than arms has paid rich dividends. Maybe the lesson for the United States is that we should devote fewer resources to shoring up foreign armies and more to bolstering schools both at home and abroad.
In the meantime, I encourage you to conduct your own research in Costa Rica, exploring those magnificent beaches or admiring those slothful sloths. Itll surely make you happy.

Question for the ladies; TMI WARNING!
Before you read further, know that this probably falls into the TMI category… if you are a guy, especially one who hates girly topics, or a gal who is uncomfortable with super personal topics, move to another thread now.Okay, warning labels aside…
I have noticed more and more over the last year or so that my feminine odor is more prominent, for lack of a more polite way to put it. From your knowledge, is this a problem that comes with getting older, more likely to be related to being overweight in general, or is it possible that being diabetic is making it worse?
I am having a hard time masking/getting rid of it… since I teach, it’s not like I can just freshen up any old time. And today I had a voice mail from a "restricted" number on my phone… turns out it was a student with comments on that topic that are far too vulgar to post here. I am pretty sure I know who he is and how he got my number… and rest assured, he will be hating life come Monday morning (we have a snow day tomorrow). But now this will be in the back of my mind all weekend. Ugh.
Anyways, if this is not diabetes related, I apologize for being off topic. Thanks in advance for understanding.

Tamra Barney Divorce — “Real Housewives Of OC” Simon & Tamra Split

Tamra Barney, one of several stars of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Orange County, has been slapped with divorce papers from her husband of 11 years, Simon Barney.
The once fun-loving parents of three have appeared on the hit reality series for the last three seasons, but in recent months both have complained of marital strain, with Simon going a step further.
He accuses his estranged wife of verbal abuse, disloyality, and infidelity.
“Petitioner contends that Respondent has been verbally abusive and has committed acts of disloyalty and infidelity,” read papers obtained by RadarOnline.
Most recently, the couple sparred over Tamra’s decision to bury the hatchet with nemesis and fellow Housewife Gretchen Rossi. Simon moved out of the family’s home earlier this week and confirmed the split when approached by Radar reporters, curtly replying: “The papers speak for themselves.”

Apple: pixels as touch sensors for brighter, thinner screens
Touchscreens and multitouch technology make up a significant majority of Apple’s research into future user interface improvements, and the iPhone introduced some of those UI paradigm shifts into our increasingly mobile computing. Since almost all interaction with the iPhone—and presumably the hopefully imminent Apple tablet—involves a touchscreen, Apple hopes to improve on touchscreen technology by using each individual LCD pixel as a touch sensor.
Apple has filed a patent application, published today, for a “display with dual-function capacitive elements.” By mixing display and sensing functions into each individual pixel, it would make touchscreens thinner, lighter, and brighter than they currently are today.

UPI.COM: Buffett supports healthcare reform bill
Published: Jan. 7, 2010 at 7:33 PM
LINCOLN, Neb., Jan. 7 (UPI) — Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said Thursday he supports the U.S. Senate’s healthcare reform bill, even though it is not “perfect.”
“The perfect is always the enemy of the good,” he told the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star, “and the unknown scares people.”
But tackling healthcare reform is “the right thing for the country,” he said.
The current system “is not working well,” Buffett told the newspaper. “Healthcare costs have galloped up as a percentage of (gross domestic product) and we haven’t covered the population the way a rich country should.”
If the United States doesn’t “get more efficient in delivering healthcare, we’re going to exacerbate any competitive advantage we may have in many industries as compared to the rest of the world,” he told the newspaper.
The chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. noted healthcare was a huge expense at his company — “and our competitors around the world don’t bear the same cost.”
He said the healthcare bill that will result from reconciling the House and Senate versions “is not going to be perfect. There will be some unintended consequences and some surprises.”
But it’s time to start and then modify the legislation as needed, he said.
Buffett — often called the “Oracle of Omaha” and noted for his adherence to “value investing” and for his personal frugality despite his immense wealth — has been a supporter of U.S. President Barack Obama.
