  • CHART OF THE DAY: Bin Laden Is A Dying Brand… Almost

    button more charts
button chart prev button chart next

First the good news. Confidence in Osama bin Laden collapsed from 2003 to 2009 as shown by Pew Research.

This is impressive progress, and quite meaningful economically.

In the market for minds, Brand Bin Laden is dying fast in countries such as Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan, and even Palestine where ‘only’ 52% have confidence in Osama bin laden versus 72% previously (down 20%).

Yet Osama bin Laden has gained substantial strength in one peculiar nation — Nigeria. Telling, given the recent ‘panty bomber’ air travel scare. Hopefully future economic growth of this massive African nation will change things for the better in the long-run. See more about Nigeria at MAVINS: The New BRICS.

  • Report: Saab delays board meeting as more bids come in

As the sale deadline grows near, Saab has postponed a board meeting and bidders such as Spyker Cars NV make last-ditch efforts to acquire the Swedish automaker before GM once and for all decides its fate.

On the agenda will be a strategizing session examining how the company can re-start production after a four-week break, and discussions regarding the bid process. Genii Capital, a private-equity firm that agreed to purchase a majority stake in Renault’s Formula One team last month, intends to hand in a cash offer some point today, according to an investor close to the process.

Spyker plans to submit a plan before today’s 5:00 p.m. deadline in New York, and Genii will be using the business plan of former bidder Koenigsegg Group. Genii says that they could make Saab a profitable company by 2012.

Saab board member Haakan Danielsson has said that unless directly instructed to do otherwise, the company plans to produce cars to fill the orders it has on the books as of right now. A delegation from the Swedish government has also made their way to Detroit so that GM is fully aware of the willingness of the EU and Swedish government to offer certain assistance to keep the company running.

  • LePhone Showcases Android’s Strength — and Weakness

Lenovo’s LePhone, announced yesterday at CES, is an impressive-looking smartphone that’s expected to come to market later this year. The Android-based handset packs in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor and seems to showcase nearly all the impressive features of Google’s mobile operating system — except any of the Google apps. Which underscores why Android’s amazing flexibility is a double-edged sword.

The handset — which PCMag.com’s Sascha Segan christened the “nemesis” of the Nexus One — is the PC vendor’s first since buying back its phone unit in November. (It will be available initially in China, then the U.S.) And there’s a lot to like about LePhone, which — according to early reviews — has a sleek look and feel much like Google’s new handset, and features a highly customizable version of the OS. But the surprising lack of the Android Market or any other visible Google offering is the latest sign that hardware manufacturers and carriers are increasingly taking the platform and reshaping it as they see fit. That’s a great selling point for Android, of course, but it also could lead to a world where a vast number of Android-based handsets and services compete with one another. And it could be the latest step toward the kind of splintered Android universe that James over at jkOnTheRun warned about months ago.

  • The Dawn of Facebook’s People-organized Web

In 2010, Facebook is setting out to structure a social layer of the web, indexing web pages and objects by harnessing what its users say about them, including whether those users like them or not, and what they tag within them.

Already, Facebook Connect offers authentication services for more than 80,000 web sites, soon to include the mega-portal Yahoo, in order to inject them with its users’ social relationships and sharing. As a broad trend, it’s clear at this point that nearly everything — even credit card transactions — can be made social.

Om and I had the chance to spend some time at Facebook this week and hear a bit more about where the company is headed this year. Here’s my analysis of what they told us.

    People Are the Web

Facebook’s core asset is its social graph — a diagram of people and their connections. Now that it’s successfully mapped people to one another, it wants to map their connections to the rest of the web and by extension, the rest of the world.

The goal in doing so, as the folks at the company told us over and over again, is to build an understanding of Facebook users’ identity — what they like, what they associate themselves with, who they are. The corollary of making something social is making it personalized.

Privacy concerns notwithstanding, this wealth of information and customization can be put to a greater good. As Marc Davis, former chief scientist of Yahoo Mobile and founder of Invention Arts, said at a recent GigaOM bunker series event (see related GigaOM Pro write-up, subscription required): “Human beings understand context from their relationships, but computers do not, so if we can use metadata to help computers understand where, when and how the metadata was created, we build better context for data.” That’s what Facebook is after. But in order to do so, the company needs to look beyond the confines of its own web service. And it is.

    Facebook.com: Means To an End

Facebook.com is just a web site, or as platform engineering head Mike Vernal described it, “info aggregation with a great photos app.” Now the company wants to blur the barriers between it and the rest of the web. Already, the site’s “Fan Box” widget — which allows users to become fans of a company or person from their web page — gets 15 billion impressions per month. “We want these actions to become possible wherever they’re most natural,” said Vernal. Soon, using the company’s announced open graph API, users will be able to become a fan of any page on the Internet. The API essentially turns a regular web page into a Facebook page, giving it the ability to collect fans, publish stories to their Facebook stream, and appear in the social networking site’s search results.

That little action could initiate a huge shift. On the one hand, becoming a fan of a web page rather than a Facebook page gives power back to sites so they can host their own experiences instead of sending people to someone else’s URL (aka facebook.com/absolut). On the other, it gives Facebook an immense amount of information about what people like, and could allow the company to reorganize the web via a sort of next generation of Google PageRank — call it “FriendRank.” Facebook will have a better understanding of what web pages are relevant and interesting because it knows how many people, and specifically people you know, are fans of it.

Though Facebook fan pages on the surface seem like a response to Twitter — allowing celebrities to collect fans who are not actually their real-world friends — they’re bigger than that. Facebook has trained 350 million users to publicly post personal endorsements. In other words, it has an army of volunteers ready to organize the web on its behalf.

    In Google’s Face

Now, Facebook is clearly poking Google. Where Google is about the wisdom of crowds, Facebook is about the wisdom of friends, said Elliot Schrage, VP of global communications, marketing and public policy — who formerly held a similar role at the search giant.

As Om wrote last year, this is actually a significant threat to Google (“Why Google Should Fear the Social Web,” subscription required):

In our modern, highly networked lives it is getting increasingly difficult to find relevant information on the web, quickly. The 10 blue links paradigm, popularized by Google, appears to be reaching its limits. While this seek-search-and-consume methodology has become part of our basic Internet behavior and turned Google into a gazillion-dollar company, it may be time for us to look for alternatives.

And this isn’t just about “fanning.” Besides being a fan of a brand or friends with a person, a third kind of Facebook relationship is that of being connected to a photo, post or video because someone else tagged you in it. That’s another thing Facebook wants to extend beyond its site. For instance, said Vernal, if you were tagged in a photo on Flickr, Facebook would bring that photo into its own list of photos of you.

So can Facebook achieve this vision? Not in a single year. And probably not without becoming more open (on that front, Om and I also visited with Facebook’s Senior Open Programs Manager David Recordon, but that’s a whole ‘nother story). But if the web is going to become people-powered, Facebook is the company that’s going to do it.

Please see the disclosure about Facebook in my bio.

  • Subaru Impreza WRX STI R205, sólo para Japón

    stir205.jpg

  • ESPN Mobile’s 2009 Performance By The Numbers

    ESPN ScoreCenter

It’s been just over three years since ESPN officially pulled the plug on Mobile ESPN (NYSE: DIS), its MVNO (service shut down on Dec 31, 2006), and it’s clear that the company has learned much about what it takes to sustain a successful mobile presence since then.

How successful? Find a rundown of the company’s mobile performance—everything from iPhone apps and games, to mobile video shows—in 2009.

Mobile apps: ESPN launched a slew of paid iPhone apps in 2009. No details on how much revenue the company has brought in, but its ESPN ScoreCenter app ranked as the top free app in the App Store, and has been downloaded over 4.5 million times. (That’s up from 2.2 million in September).

Mobile TV and video: Unique viewers of video clips (on-demand) from ESPN Mobile increased 87 percent vs. 2008; total minutes spent increased by 106 percent across all carriers.

Meanwhile, people watched nearly 850 live events on ESPN Mobile TV, the non-stop streaming video network that runs on FLO TV and MobiTV. Total minutes spent viewing ESPN Mobile TV were up 186 percent year-over-year.

Mobile web: ESPN’s mobile site was the 8th most-trafficked site on the mobile web for the year. It averaged over 8.9 million uniques per month—up 35 percent vs. 2009—per Nielsen Mobile.

ESPN gained mobile traction both in the U.S. and abroad, with unique visits to its ESPNSoccernet site up 379 percent, and visits to ESPNCricinfo up by 113 percent (per Omniture). Meanwhile, its ESPN Deportes Mobile averaged nearly 360,000 uniques per month.

  • TVs, Cars, AR – Oh My! Hot Tech Trends For Entrepreneurs At CES

ces_logo_jan10.jpgToday marks the official start to the 2010 Consumer Electronics Showcase in Las Vegas where all of the biggest electronics manufacturers show off their coolest and newest products. While CES is mainly a gadget show, entrepreneurs looking for the next big thing should pay close attention to the innovative ideas being pushed into the consumer market.

The big show is just getting underway, but we are already seeing some trends emerge that could point to new opportunities for startups in 2010.

    Sponsor

    Televisions

boxee_logo_jan10.jpgOn everyone’s CES prediction list this year are new TV technologies, including 3D viewing and the apparent rebirth of Web TV. Recently, various set-top boxes have brought web apps into our living rooms, including the Roku player, and BluRay players with Netflix, YouTube and Pandora integration.

As we reported earlier this week, Skype has partnered with LG and Panasonic to integrate their service with new Internet-connected HDTVs. In addition, Internet media aggregator Boxee is marketing their brand new Boxee Box set-top device, and Yahoo! announced plans today to expand its presence in the living room. As more media and applications migrate onto televisions, startups will have the opportunity to find new niches and provided services on these new products.

    Automobiles

Ford_Logo_jan10.jpgAnother trend is the implementation of new technologies into automobiles, and as we mentioned yesterday, Ford’s new MyFord Touch is leading the way. By placing LCD touch screens in the dashboard and turning the car into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, Ford is opening doors for new platforms in the automobile.

Current companies are already taking advantage of the the growing auto-tech industry. Streaming music service Pandora recently announced a partnership with Pioneer to bring Internet radio to your dashboard – albeit for a hefty $1,200 price tag. When the day comes that everyone has a connected car that can sync and share data, startups will be needed for services that organize and make use of these new forms of information.

    Augmented Reality

ivision_glasses_jan10.jpgAnd finally, while we may not see a plethora of new gadgets in this space at CES, augmented reality looks to make a huge splash in the consumer electronics market in 2010. Right now, most AR experiences are on cell phones or desktop computers, but fans of augmented reality expect to see some Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) or new transparent LCD screens in the near future.

The potential for augmented reality has been flying under the radar for years, and only in recent days have improvements in technology allowed for it to begin to flourish. AR is a quickly expanding field with many opportunities for innovation, and is a field in which startups could quickly find a foothold.
