  • Asia Sharply Lower, Europe Modestly Lower Despite Greek Debacle

    Here’s the picture after yesterday’s mini-beating.

    Asia ended sharply lower:

WSJ: The Nikkei 225 was down 1.5%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was down 0.9%, South Korea’s Kospi Composite was off 0.3%. The Shanghai Composite index was 1.6% lower and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was down 0.7%, while shares in Taiwan bucked the region and were up 0.1%. Dow Jones industrial average futures were 22 points higher in screen trade.

Shares in China were being led lower by banks on concerns of capital raising leading to massive stock supply.

We actually wouldn’t put too much stock in the bank capital raising explanation. That’s basically become the default explanation for down move there.

Europe, meanwhile, is headed lower as well, with the STOXX down 0.4% and the FTSE 100 down 0.2%. Given the tremors out of Greece, this isn’t particularly bad.

And gold, which is now going on several days without showing much strength at all, is clawing back a tiny amount, though it remains well below where it was just a few days ago.

  • Another Question / Thought

Regarding Type 2 – If we were overweight and this caused IR – if we loose the weight would we then become less resistant to insulin? For example what happens if after loosing 10kgs and BS are still the same as before loosing the 10kgs – do we still have to loose more weight? How much weight do we need to loose before we can consume "a little more carbs" in the diet without it affecting our BS? Or does it NEVER HAPPEN? taking into consideration YMMV.

  • Best Gift Ideas for the Depressed

christmas giftsThere are many things we’d like to have-lasting happiness, peace on Earth and a cure for cancer-but when it comes to material needs these are some gifts which would really lift our spirits.
    1. Cash
One of the ways that depression hits hardest is financially. Between the medical bills and the loss of work days, it can be hard to just keep up. Offer to pay some bills, give a gift certificate or phone card or give them the cash to spend as needed.
    2. A Day of Pampering
Some of the great products out there include spa gift certificates and luxurious kits for do-it-yourself spa days at home. There’s nothing like a little pampering to make a person feel special.
    3. A Good Book
When you just feel like snuggling up in some comfy pajamas and hiding from the world there’s nothing like a good book to keep you company.
    4. A Nice Journal
Writing one’s thoughts and feelings in a journal can be very therapeutic. Many blank books are available which have beautiful covers and inspirational quotes throughout. There are also quite a few guidebooks about journaling geared towards individual interests which you might include with a blank journal to give them inspiration.
    5. Relaxation CD
Stress and anxiety are often problems faced by the depressed. Soothing music can be very helpful.
    6. Night time Comfort
Does your loved one have trouble with sleep? How about a gift to make bedtime more comfortable?
    7. The Gift of Music
Music has the amazing gift of conveying emotion without saying word. It has the power to express how we are feeling when we aren’t able.
    8. Maid Service
Having a clean living environment can make a person feel so much better, but when even getting out of bed is a chore housework may get neglected.
    9. Send Flowers
Your best choice is a live plant. There’s nothing more depressing than dead flowers and a live plant will give your loved one something to care for and nurture. Have them delivered to their workplace if possible. It’s a real boost for your co-workers to see that someone cares about you.
    10. A Pet
It goes without saying that you should be certain this is something your loved one would want before making the purchase, but a pet can be a lifesaver for the lonely. Animals love us unconditionally.

  • Google Chrome Extensions Gallery Now Live

The wait is over, Google Chrome extensions are here for everybody, bar Mac users, and the online Extensions Gallery is now live with over 300 extensions at the time of launch. More than a year after Chrome was launched, the single most requested feature is now fully-fleshed and supported in the latest Beta builds of the browser which were released for all platforms today.

“We’re launching extensions in the beta channel for Windows and Linux (Mac is in progress). We’re also opening our gallery, which, as of now, contains more than 300 extensions!,” Erik Kay and Aaron Boodman, Google software engineers wrote. “An extension system has been one of our most requested features for Google Chrome. It’s a tribute to Mozilla and the Firefox project that nowadays, users just expect all browsers to have built-in extensibility.”

“Today, we’re really happy to release a beta of extensions that begins to deliver on our initial vision. Extensions are as easy to create as webpages. Users can install and uninstall them quickly without restart, and extensions have a great polished look that fits in with Google Chrome’s minimalist aesthetic,” they explained.

Now, users of the latest Chrome Beta for Windows and Linux and, of course, those of the dev builds for all platforms can visit t… (read more)

  • PIMCO: Strong Dollar Supporters Will Create The Next Crisis

Economists should get rid of the terms 'strong' and 'weak' when discussing the dollar's value, and use words like 'heavy' and 'light' instead. It would do wonders to change  the American public's perception that somehow a strong dollar must always be good.

Well, PIMCO's global portfolio manager Scott Mather makes a pretty complete and concise argument why investors, and Americans, should not to fear a weak dollar. This is because a steadily declining dollar actually helps solve global imbalances which could cause the next U.S. crisis.

PIMCO: Attempts to prevent a continued orderly dollar decline may further perpetuate global imbalances, slow U.S. economic recovery and prevent a stabilization in the U.S. debt dynamic that is badly needed.

    His key ponts:

The dollar isn't even that weak. You can't just look at the dollar vs. a single currency. Using a broad measure of dollar value, the dollar is still stronger than it was back in 1979:

A better measure is the Real Broad Traded Weighted Exchange Rate. This type of currency measure is constructed to look at the value of a basket of currencies weighted by their respective importance in trade and adjusted for inflation differentials (see Chart 1).

    Chart111

The dollar isn't about to have a crisis. It's declining value relative to other currencies will actually help prevent one.

a weaker dollar is one of the least painful ways to both stimulate the U.S. economy and rebalance the global economy. It is only the fear of turning what has so far been an orderly decline in the U.S. dollar into a more tumultuous decline that is preventing a more honest and open policy dialogue. But surely the benefits of a weaker U.S. dollar are not lost on the U.S. Treasury or the Federal Reserve.

Blindly supporting a strong dollar hurts the U.S.. Thus arguing for a strong dollar is to prolong America's economic problems:

Arguments for a renewed commitment to a strong U.S. dollar are equivalent to suggesting that the imbalances that helped bring about the economic crisis should be further encouraged and that U.S. indebtedness should continue to expand. This would further promote an economy based on consumption and unsustainable indebtedness rather than one balanced with an appropriate amount of production and saving.

Look around the world. Shouldn't it strike strong dollar advocates as funny that most major economies are trying to weaken their currencies vs. the dollar?

Why it is that virtually no other country in the world is promoting strength in their own domestic currencies, if it’s such a good thing for economic growth? In fact, many countries are openly intervening in the currency markets to try to prevent or slow the appreciation of their currencies vs. the U.S. dollar. If a strong currency is so good for the U.S., why isn’t a strong domestic currency a desirable policy objective for every other country in the world?

There's much more at PIMCO, read the full piece here.

  • Mail Not Flowing From Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007

So here is the latest scenario. I am setting up a new Exchange 2007 server in an effort to migrate Exchange 2003 users over to it. During the setup of Exchange 2007 we ran into some schema permissions issues, and in an attempt to correct them we tried uninstalling Exchange 2007 and deleted the SMTP connectors that Exchange 2003 needs in order to deliver mail to Exchange 2007.

While working with Microsoft to correct our AD Schema permission errors, the Microsoft Technician gave me a commandlet to run to rebuild the connectors. The problem was the commandlet did not build them correctly. When I migrated my test user over to 2007, it could send outbound mail fine, and could send email to users on 2003, however since all inbound mail flowed through the 2003 server, no mail could go to the new user.

On the Exchange 2007 server I used the mail flow troubleshooter tool, and received the following error:

Mail submission failed: Error message: The SMTP host was not specified

I was able to correct the issue though by doing the following:

    • Migrated my test user back to Exchange 2003
    • On Exchange 2003, I opened Exchange System Manager
    • I navigated to Administrative Groups> Exchange 2003 Server>Routing Groups>Connectors
    • I deleted the connector for the Exchange 2003-2007 Server
    • I navigated to Administrative Groups> Exchange 2007 Server>Routing Groups>Connectors
    • I deleted the connector for the Exchange 2007-2003 Server
    • On The Exchange 2007 server, I went to Start > Control Panel> Programs and Features
    • I selected Exchange 2007 and clicked Uninstall
    • I uninstalled the Hub Transport Role
    • I rebooted Exchange 2007
    • When it booted back up, I went to Start > Control Panel> Programs and Features
    • I selected Exchange 2007 and clicked Change
    • I re-installed the Hub Transport Role
    • When I did, it provided me with an option to create an SMTP connector with Exchange 2003
    • Moved my test user back to Exchange 2007
    • Done

After that, mail flow was working perfectly! Ever have this problem? How did you fix it? Hit me up in the comments!

B-12 Methylcobalamin Spray ( 1 oz ) Vitamin B12 is one of the most important daily nutrients a person can get. Yet most people are not getting effective and adequate amounts of it. Pure Vegan’s B12 Spray is a cut above other B12 products since it’s in the methylcobalamin form. Methylcobalamin is the most absorbable form of B12. This is extremely important when taking supplemental B12, especially for Vegetarians. Since B12 is found mainly in meat sources, Vegetarians are often deficient in this important daily vitamin.

  • Best of 2009 Health Stories for Women

When we have a break from the holiday rush in December, many of us reflect on the year that just passed. Some stories may have gotten lots of attention while others were overshadowed. I chose 12 of the most important (or intriguing) women’s health topics of 2009. Click on the links for the full stories.

With the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, it was a scary time for all pregnant women who naturally have weakened immune responses. They were urged to get vaccines for H1N1.

    2009-year

Mammograms got quite a bit of attention late this year when the US Preventive Services Task Force recommended against the screening for women under 50. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said women should keep doing what they’ve been doing for years and talk to their doctors about whether or not to have a mammogram.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued new cervical cancer screening guidelines, saying that some women may not need a Pap test each year.

A study funded by the National Cancer Institute revealed more about the lifestyle risk factors for breast cancer. Alcohol consumption and obesity were found to greatly elevate risk.

Both women and men were urged to cut added sugar intake. The American Heart Association issued new sugar intake recommendations to help reduce obesity and diabetes.

A large study showed that H2 blockers for acid reflux taken during pregnancy pose no significant threat to the fetus.

Medical professionals issued warning on use of fetal heart rate monitors, which could give some women a false sense of security and cause a delay in needed treatment.

Researchers found that in women with a family history of breast cancer, breastfeeding reduces breast cancer risk by more than 50%.

America once again got a “D” on preterm birth rates.

Good news for almost everyone: Dark chocolate was proven to reduce stress.

Depression became a suggested risk factor for bone loss.

A large-scale sleep study revealed that lack of sleep is more dangerous (heart-wise) for women than men.
