  • Facebook break

My first two night shifts were not bad. I slept ok, not great, but just ok. Also, I never hit that “wall” people talk about in the middle of the night when you just get so tired. I think I was mostly just running on adrenaline of being in a new situation combined with critical care patients. So far, the people are nice and awesome, too, so that’s a plus.
I feel like the night shift could give me a nice, slow pace to learn, but truthfully, I feel I would learn better on days because I feel I benefit a lot from seeing all of the different disciplines who come to see patients. And rounds? C’mon, the MDs in the ICU are quite smart and I always learn something new about my patient and their process when they round and everyone talks.

But, I am giving it a chance.

In other news, I have decided that I have a facebook addiction and it is not good. And so, I have logged out and removed the direct link to my account from my bookmark bar. I think I just need a break. I feel like facebook is just one big facade. I cannot explain it.

This article kind of explains how I feel: https://www.adbusters.org/magazine/80/quit_facebook.html

I just think I might be more productive or clear mind without it for awhile…and for awhile, I mean about a week or a few days at least. I mean, I’m almost 25, it just seems like a juvenile thing to be doing all the time, haha

As another side note, I’m currently reading this book: http://www.halftheskymovement.org/

You may have seen it on Oprah. Anyone read it?

  • Help Justify Datacenter Management Improvements

Sun / Intel This post is part of the IT Innovation series, sponsored by Sun & Intel. Read more at ITInnovation.com.
Of course, the content of this post consists entirely of the thoughts and opinions of the author.

If you haven’t noticed, we’re starting an ongoing series of cases here to develop interesting, engaging and useful discussions for our new sub-site, IT Innovations. We’re looking for insights that might help IT managers stay informed and keep their operations competitive.

For this case, we’re looking for engaging content and experts to be featured who can help educate IT decision makers on the management of mission-critical applications in datacenters.

The topics for this case will focus on datacenter management services and solutions. We’re looking for at least 300 words in the form of a blog post that can serve as a discussion starter, and we’d also like to encourage commenting on the submitted insights. Appropriate topics for these discussions include:

    • How do you effectively communicate datacenter priorities to non-technical managers?
    • What datacenter management services can you not live without? How do you justify the costs?
    • How do you assess datacenter priorities? Do you think there’s a better way?
    • How often do you review your datacenter management tools and compare them to alternative solutions?

These topics are not exhaustive, and you do not need to address all of these suggested conversations. We welcome additional proposals for alternative subjects, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

  • Recycle Holiday Goods Into New Decor

Leftover holiday goods from last year (or even this year) can easily be turned into fun holiday decor for the season. You save an item from the landfill and crafting items from recycled goodies saves money.

    homemade-recycled-holiday-luminaries

This month you’ve probably got some large tin cans hanging around – especially if you’ve been making pies in bulk with canned goods. This is the perfect opportunity to make lovely homemade Recycled Holiday Luminaries.

You’ve got lots of choices about how to reuse scrap gift wrap from last year. I was thinking you could make some adorable recycled cereal box houses, then dress them up for the holidays. Not only a cute idea, but something the kids could totally help with. You can make beautiful recycled gift wrap scrap cards. You can also create paper Christmas trees with recycled construction then cover them with ornaments made from recycled gift wrap.

Lastly you can use small scraps of recycled gift wrap around drink glasses at your holiday party or gathering. People can write their names on their cup without marking the glass and more easily tell them apart.

    light wreath

One of my favorite craft ideas is the Illuminated Wreath (shown above) that I saw at Real Simple. Grab a wire wreath frame and an old set of lights and you’re good to go. I realize the downside is the energy use, but you can limit that by unplugging this wreath at night when everyone heads off to bed.

A great useful reuse craft is to turn old holiday greeting cards into brand new gift boxes – seriously these are awesome and gift boxes can be expensive so this solves two issues.

What holiday reuse ideas do you have?
