  • Social Shopping Site ThisNext Confirms Funding, Acquires Stylehive

Social e-commerce company ThisNext recently raised a Series C round of $1.2 million, which we reported based on an SEC filing. The Santa Monica, CA startup has now confirmed the financing round and also announced that it has acquired smaller rival Stylehive for an undisclosed amount.

ThisNext set up an entirely new parent company, Curatemedia, which will be the corporate brand that will operate both ThisNext and Stylehive henceforth.

ThisNext says its latest round comes from Clearstone Venture Partners and Anthem Venture Partners, which as far as we can tell were all prior investors in the company, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. According to the CrunchBase profile for ThisNext, entrepreneur and angel investor (and TechCrunch50 partner) Jason Calacanis was an early backer of the company and serves on its board.

According to the startup, the capital will be used to develop additional shopping tools, facilitate commerce functionality and to fuel the growth of Curatemedia into new verticals and categories. Stylehive, its first acquisition, is a fashion and beauty community and claims over 600,000 registered users. Stylehive made an acquisition of its own back in 2007, scooping up fashion social media startup Stylediary for an undisclosed amount.

In related social shopping business news, Time Inc. last week acquired StyleFeeder for “well into eight figures.”

  • Dell E6510 / Margaux strolls through the FCC

Recall, if you will, Dell’s aluminum-clad E6500: a mobile workhorse that some rank as highly, if not higher than Lenovo’s venerable ThinkPad line (albeit with one slight hickup in its service history). Well, the company has quite rightly decided that it’s time to freshen things up with a new model, so let us all say a big howareya to the E6510. Code-named Margaux and bearing the product code PP30LA, this machine’s journey through the FCC reveals Compal as its manufacturer, Intel and Windows as the major hardware and software providers (no surprises there), and a seemingly unaltered touchpad from the previous generation. The battery label seems to indicate a cool 6,700mAh of juice, while connectivity is taken care of with WiFi, WWAN and a UWB/Bluetooth combo card, with the latter two likely being optional extras. All in all, it’s looking like a competent new outing from Dell, now let’s just jack that Core i5 in there and start selling these babies.

  • What Are Some Of The Most Common Names In The World Today?

Believe it or not, one of the most common names in the world today is ‘Mohammed’!

Recently, the Department of Treasury, San Francisco, conducted an extensive research into some of the most common names in the world today. The purpose behind such research was to try to catch a terrorist.

The research revealed that some two hundred names were most commonly used across the world, the most common among them being Gonzales, Lopez, Ali, Hussein, Abdul, Lucas, and Gibson.

The government watch list has however proved to be a major inconvenience, if not a downright nuisance for those people whose names are on this list of common names. The reason? They are turned away by insurance and loan companies, because they are ‘potential’ terrorists.

Companies who get even a partial match on these common names are reluctant to ferret out the mistake and rectify it, and the end result is that these people with the most common names in the world are forced to suffer and endure in silence, until how long…?
