  • IDC: Symbian should keep dominating the market, Android to take second

We have absolutely no idea what kind of voodoo, pseudoscience, and black magic goes into making an analyst-grade industry forecast, but considering that our local weather dude can barely tell us whether it’ll be raining in a few hours — much less a year or two from now — you’ve got to take these sorts of things with a healthy dose of skepticism. That said, we’re finding it pretty notable here that IDC’s latest worldwide smartphone shipment forecast through 2013 has Symbian continuing to dominate the field of ever-stronger competitors thanks “primarily to the strength of Nokia in markets outside of the United States,” while Android will surge past Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, and iPhone to become number two in the world on shipments of some 68 million devices. Falling back a bit in IDC’s Utopian vision are generic Linux devices along with webOS, which — while “growing steadily” — will be held back by a wee number of carrier partnerships. Everything that IDC’s saying seems plausible enough, and we’ve got every reason to believe that Android’s going to continue to heat up — particularly with four of the top five mobile players (Nokia notably excluded) devoting significant portions of their smartphone lineups to the platform over the coming months. As for Symbian, it’s an absolute juggernaut by any measure, so we can see it staying king for a while even in a complete vacuum of serious innovation — it’ll just be interesting whether to see Nokia and the Foundation can keep these hungry upstarts firmly in their rear-view mirror for much of the decade.

  • Panasonic churns out DMC-FX66, DMC-TS2, DMC-ZS5, DMC-ZS7 and DMC-ZR3 Lumix compacts

Panasonic’s just announced quite a handful of Lumix compact cameras, featuring both the new Venus Engine VI and Venus Engine HD II that claim to perform quicker with better noise reduction. What’s more exciting is that these are all compatible with the forthcoming SDXC cards too, but check out their “Happy Mode” — it makes photos “more vivid and true to the color of the scene you memorized.” Yeah, as if we’d want photos that are more, um, real. Anyway, let’s break it down here (clockwise from top left; non-US model numbers in brackets):
    • DMC-FX66: This one’s a 14.1 megapixel slim camera with an f2.8 25-125mm (5x zoom) ultra-wide-angle lens (with Power O.I.S lens-shift stabilization). The 720p video capture and 1.06 second start-up time are sweet too, but no AVCHD Lite here. On the back there’s a 2.7-inch 230k-dot screen with wide viewing angle. All this is just 5.11 ounces including battery.
    • DMC-TS2 (FT2): This camera has a lot in common with the FX66 above — same sensor, same image stabilization, same scene modes (but with three extra), same focus modes and same screen. The main differences are its AVCHD Lite 720p video format, f3.3 28-128mm (4.6x) lens and added ruggedness — waterproof to 10m, shockproof to 2m, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and dustproof. It’s of course slightly heavier too — 6.63 ounces including battery.
    • DMC-ZS5 (TZ8) and DMC-ZS7 (TZ10): These two appear to be twins, except the former has a smaller screen (2.7-inch with 230k dots instead of 3-inch with 460k dots) and lacks GPS, AVCHD Lite and mini-HDMI port. Both do 12.1 megapixel pictures and 720p videos, have f3.3 25-300mm (12x) lens with lens-shift stabilization, and have identical scene and focus modes. With battery these weigh 7.55 ounces and 7.69 ounces respectively.
    • DMC-ZR3 (ZX3): Whoa! Another 14.1 megapixel camera which does AVCHD Lite. The specs are almost identical to the TS2 except for the lens (f3.3 25-200mm 8x ultra-wide-angle) and lack of ruggedness. It weighs 5.61 ounces with battery.

Phew! No prices or availability announced yet, so take your time with picking out your favorite.

Americans are lucky left wing radio station Air America crashed before Obama and founder now Senator Al Franken found a way to turn it into public radio.

Ironically, Saul Alinsky, father of US radical socialism wanted to break control of the media because it was used by power elites. Obama doesn’t need to break the control as the mainstream media act as a state media.

Bernie Goldberg wrote about this in his book “A Slobbering Love Affair.” Hypocrisy is the problem with mainstream media bias because they claim they’re unbiased. Public media practices similar hypocrisy. My worst experiences with bias and personal attacks in the media were with public media including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). They should be unbiased and apolitical but they are not. Funding by all taxpayers demands neutrality, but it doesn’t happen and it’s always left of centre.

Totalitarian governments control all media. In democracies, public media means radio and television, but paradoxically not newspapers. It is considered acceptable because they don’t have a monopoly, they do have a considerable financial advantage. Fear of political interference means they are often protected, but this means they are not accountable to the market place or the taxpayers. They have no place in society.

  • Cut for Success? What Your Hairstyle Says About You

By Jessica Lothstein for Men’s Life Today

Interview suit dry-cleaned? Check. Shoes shined? Check. Mohawk perfectly sculpted with extra pomade?

Hold on a second there, cowboy. This is a job interview, where you’re supposed to strut your experience, not your feathers!

“Research says we make our assessments of others in the first 15 seconds we meet them,” says John McKee, founder of the Business Success Coach Web site and author of Career Wisdom: 101 Proven Strategies to Ensure Career Success. “Within those first critical moments,” he says, “you’re being judged based on how you look, not what you say.”

And how you look doesn’t just include your clothes and your hygiene but how you fashion your locks. McKee says it may have something to do with the fact that women make up a majority of the hiring force today, and “women are much more conscious and concerned about grooming, especially when it comes to hair.” But experts agree that you can infer a lot about a person — including how you think they’re going to function as an employee — based on how they fashion their coif.

“The truth is, how others perceive us, whether it’s true or not, fundamentally determines how they treat us, especially in the workplace,” says Dr. Rob Yeung, a London-based psychologist and author of Confidence: The Key to Achieving Your Professional Best. “Looking the part is the difference between getting a job or not, or moving ahead as opposed to getting landlocked.”

So, how do you know if you look the part? Here’s what your hairstyle really says about you.

    Side Part
    Popular in: Finance, politics, insurance.

Says: Serious and business-minded. You’re a hard worker who wants to get ahead.

Why: It’s on the conservative and simple side, but it still shows that you put some effort into your grooming routine. It’s also a classic look that will never go out of style, because it conveys a sense of class and importance. “There’s a secret among HR people: that you’re more likely to get a promotion if you look like you’ve already made it,” says McKee.

“Take a cue from the hairstyles of the people one level above your current role,” concludes McKee. Chances are you’ll see lots of side parts.

    Buzz Cut
Popular in: Medicine, professional sports, the Army.

Says: Confident and masculine. You care about appearance, but you’re too busy to spend too much time on your hair.

Why: There’s a reason this look is favored by the military. It’s not just extremely low maintenance, leaving time for more important business (or battles, as the case may be), but it’s a bold statement that shows you “want to look like you’re part of the team and move up the ranks,” says McKee.

    Faux Hawk
    Popular in: Fashion, photography, hipsterdom.

Says: Creative and extroverted. You’re concerned about standing out from the crowd.

Why: It’s an edgy look that conveys a lot of confidence and personal style. That said, it’s also just breaking over into mainstream, so if you work in an environment where everyone else is sporting side parts, you’re going to attract a lot of attention. If, however, you work in a creative field where suits are optional (and even tattoos are acceptable), wear your faux hawk with pride. “If your appearance syncs with the rest of the workplace, it gives the impression that you’re able to handle the technical skills,” says McKee.

    Textured Bed Head
Popular in: Hollywood, media, public relations.

Says: Trendy and detail-oriented. You care about the little things.

Why: It’s a look that requires a fair amount of time to create and maintain, so it shows that you put a lot of effort into keeping up your appearance. “People in positions of power, especially recruiters, like to see that a potential employee takes care of himself and keeps up with trends,” says McKee. Plus, “when you look good, you feel good and have more confidence,” says Yeung.

    Caesar Cut
Popular in: Law, theater, gladiator rings.

Says: Intuitive and savvy. Concerned about looking perfectly pulled together.

Why: You have more important things on your morning agenda than spending hours styling your hair, but you still want to look like you take pride in your appearance, and more importantly, that you mean business. This look is great for guys of all ages, but it’s an especially good style for guys who are just entering the workforce. “Younger people want to believe people will hire them based on competence and not appearance,” says McKee, “but unfortunately, that’s not the case. You do have to give up some of your identity if you want to be part of the team and move up the ranks.”

For those of you who think that Governments tell the truth and that they are above suspicion the Dr. David Kelly story (LINK)says it all.

I have reported on “Climate Realists” stories with an open mind for nearly two years, sure I am bias when it comes to the stupidity of AGW, but I do not simply report that “Climate Realists” have all the answers and that AGW has nothing to offer, in that, I fully support the recycling of waste to help the Earth’s resources. My personal view on what has gone on in Government regarding “Climate Change” is that a decision was made to drive through policy based on all known data at the time to save the world from heating up due to mans emissions from industrialization.

  • Mortgage ‘relief’ leads to foreclosure notice

    DebcroppedDeb and Rick Franklin

For nine months, Deb Franklin said, she did exactly what JP Morgan Chase and President Barack Obama told her to do. She made her mortgage payments on time, delivered via Western Union, after they were reduced from $1,433 to $1,233 through Obama's Making Home Affordable program. After three payments, the mortgage relief was supposed to become permanent, but a maddening string of paperwork headaches landed her in limbo. Then, on the day after Christmas, a "bomb dropped" on her life.

A letter from a law firm representing Chase said the bank had begun foreclosure proceedings against her.

"It was devastating, just devastating," Franklin said. "I ended up on the couch shaking so badly that my husband started piling blankets on me saying, 'Are you OK?' And I told him, 'I'm not cold, I'm scared.' "

The Franklins are exactly the kind of family the Making Home Affordable program was designed to rescue. They were trying to hang on to their primary home, had enough income to make significant monthly payments and their home’s  value was still within shouting distance of their mortgage balance. Home values in rural Airville, Pa. — just across the Maryland border, near Baltimore — never exploded like those in America's big cities, so market value of their modest split-level hadn’t fallen far.

But instead of hope and help, the Franklins say their 10-month odyssey through the Making Home Affordable program raised their mortgage balance from $187,000 to $207,000, ruined their credit score, leading to cancellation of their credit cards, and now — despite making all their payments — put them on the brink of losing their home.

Small msnbcFranklin has been told by bank representatives that the foreclosure notice was sent in error, but she doesn't buy it. On a single day in early January, she says, one Chase representative told her that the loan modification plan had been denied, another said it was approved and a third told her the foreclosure had been "suspended."

"I check my county auctions every Monday to make sure my house isn't on there,” she said. “I don't believe anything they say anymore."

Some 4 million American homeowners qualify for the Making Home Affordable program, and around 850,000 of them have been offered lower payments on a trial basis, according to the Treasury Department.  Enrollees see their mortgage payments reduced to 31 percent of their income through interest rate reductions, fee waivers and lengthening of mortgage terms.  Entrants are told that if they make three "temporary" modification payments on time, they will qualify for permanent relief. But as of December, only 66,000 had seen their mortgage permanently modified – a number dwarfed by the 2.8 million foreclosures completed last year.

Until the lower loan payments are made permanent, banks are entitled to continue with foreclosure proceedings.

    —————————————————————–

More from John Schoen: Flaws plague foreclosure relief program

    —————————————————————–

Franklin is one of many homeowners who have enrolled in the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), offered as part of Making Home Affordable, who later compared their experiences through the Web site LoanSafe.org. They found that many of them had similar tales of lost paperwork, surprise foreclosure notices and ruined credit.  Msnbc.com reviewed about two dozen such stories involving virtually every major bank. Franklin, who shared an extensive diary of events she said she kept during her attempt to modify her mortgage, is typical.

"I don't know if President Obama knows what's going on," she said, adding that she recently sent a long fax message to the White House chronicling her Red Tape nightmare. "I don't know what else to do."

    The Franklins' home

DebshomeThe Franklins hadn’t suffered significant loss of income during the recession. Rather, health problems and family emergencies pushed them to the brink of financial ruin, placing the home they’ve lived in since 1984 at risk. When their adult child had a near-fatal car accident in July 2008, they emptied their bank account to help him and his three children through the ordeal. Soon, their $1,433 monthly mortgage payments were overwhelming their budget, and they began to dip into their retirement savings. So Franklin was one of the first in line last March after President Obama announced the Making Home Affordable program.

She and her husband received a quick response after signing up March 2 on Chase’s Web site. They were told to call the bank two weeks later. Then, when they filed a 37-page packet with Chase later that month, they were told their application was “in underwriting. “ On April 22, they were told their modification was approved and a new payment of $1,233 was to be paid via Western Union beginning May 1.  If they managed to also complete payments on June 1 and July 1, their modification would be made permanent, Franklin said Chase employees told them.

The first sign of potential trouble came almost immediately.  On May 1, she said she was told during a phone call that her actual payment should have been $1,233.18 – so she was short 18 cents. If the 18 cents didn't arrive soon, her modification would be "canceled," she quoted the Chase employee as saying. She sent Chase a check for $1, to be safe, and on June 1 and July 1, she sent payment via Western Union for $1,234. Calls to Chase after each payment elicited the same response: "Everything is on track," Franklin said.

But in July, when the modification was to be made permanent, she said she was told that Chase's loan department was overwhelmed and that she would have to wait another 45 to 60 days. In the meantime, her log shows that Chase employees told her to keep making the temporary modified payments.

Things began to go south in August. She received a notice of default from the bank, which demanded $11,000 in late fees and unpaid mortgage payments to bring the loan current. A Chase operator told her to ignore the letter and to keep making modified payments.

Meanwhile, other parts of her financial life began to unravel.  Despite making the payments prescribed by Chase, the bank had reported her to the credit bureaus as having made only partial payments on her mortgage.  Her credit score plummeted from 660 to 444, and penalty credit card interest rates kicked in. In a short time, her cards rocketed from 8.99 and 14.99 percent to 29 percent.

"They did not tell us that would happen when we entered the program," she said. "For many people, their credit is destroyed. I know people who say they never would have entered the program if they knew that."

(A Treasury Department official told the New York Times recently that many early applicants to the Making Home Affordable program did see severe credit score hits of “30 to 100 points.” But the official said that in November, banks developed a new way to report mortgage modification recipients to the credit bureaus that does not do as much damage to their credit scores.)

On Aug. 31, before making her next payment, Franklin called to check her status.  At this point, the operator said her paperwork was missing and told her to re-fax the entire 37-page application. She sent the documentation and submitted the payment.

On Sept. 29, she was told that her modification had been approved, but she still had to wait for some delayed paperwork — perhaps another 30 to 60 days.

On Oct. 10, she received a letter from Chase telling her to call immediately because her modification was at risk.  When she called, she said, an operator told her that the letters were "computer generated," and she should “disregard” them.

When a letter arrived on Dec. 7 from Chase warning her that "although we received a payment on your loan, it was not sufficient to bring the loan current," she was given the same advice by a Chase operator: "Disregard those letters." She was reminded that stable income and stable payment history were the most important factors in modification decisions.

She was about to make her eighth trial payment when the nightmare letter arrived indicating foreclosure had begun.

“The law firm of Shapiro & DeNardo, LLC has been retained to initiate a lawsuit to foreclose the mortgage on your property,” it read. It indicated her loan balance was now $213,362.41 – more than $20,000 larger than when she’d entered the HAMP program. When she called the law firm, she was told that $13,235 was required to bring the loan current.

A call to Chase shed little light on the situation.

"We were told the foreclosure process marches on even if you are in the modification," she said.

But an operator also told her that all her paperwork was in order, and she should receive her final modification within the week.  After a few more phone calls, a supervisor asked that she once again re-fax the application.

Two days later, a Chase operator who said he was in Florida called to say the modification had been denied, and demanded $13,235 to stop the foreclosure. A return call to Chase produced a different response: The family was approved for the permanent modification, the operator told her. A call to the lawyers’ office confirmed that the foreclosure was suspended.

But as of Monday, the Franklins were still awaiting final paperwork, and assurance that they will be allowed to remain in their home of 26 years. The most recent information, she said, came from a Chase operator, who told her there would be no new information until Feb. 1. On that date, Franklin will make her 10th modified payment.

“This whole thing just doesn’t seem like it makes sense,” she said. “Everybody is into the big political story here, but I think people are too wrapped up in that to know what’s really going on and try to deal with it.”

HerbboxIn a statement to msnbc.com Chase apologized for “incorrectly sending a foreclosure notice.”

Chase spokesman Tom Kelly said that the firm processed many other modification applications quickly, and had ramped up quickly to deal with an “unprecedented volume of customers” seeking mortgage help. He said the firm offered 600,000 trial modifications and approved 120,000 during 2009. Meanwhile, it added 5,000 employees to an existing staff of 8,000 who work with delinquent borrowers, he said.

While Kelly declined to discuss most specifics of Franklin’s case, the statement placed some of the blame for delay on the family.

“We set up the borrower's trial modification payment using information the customer provided,” the statement read. “When we received the documentation, we learned that the family's income was significantly different.  As a result, we continue to review how we can best help the family.”

So for now, Deb Franklin continues to scan the newspapers every week, making sure her home hasn’t been put up for sale.  She had a scare on Monday.

“I checked the sheriff's sale this morning and my heart sank when I saw a home on our road listed for auction,” she said.  “All I saw was the name of our road at first, but it was not us….Whew, dodged another one this week.”

  • SuperSpeed USB 3.0 FAQ – Preguntas Frecuentes

  • Ethiopia: Bloggers defend Ethiopian Airlines after crash

Ethiopia-based bloggers rushed to defend the safety record of the country's national airline on Monday after one of its planes crashed near Beirut, with all 90 people on board feared dead.

Owen Abroad said he was “very upset” by the news in the post Ethiopian Airlines, adding:

Ethiopian Airlines has an outstanding safety record. The staff are professional, courteous and efficient. I will be flying from the UK to Addis on Friday on Ethiopian Airlines and, despite today’s tragedy, I am looking forward to it.

A commenter on the blog agreed, writing:

I’ve flown with them a number of times, and never had a bad experience. They’re also much better with changing dates than most other airline companies.

Two annoyances about the news coverage in the UK

When the crash was first announced on the news, we were told that there were 2 Brits on board, one Canadian citizen, and one French citizen. Apparently people of other nationalities are less relevant / interesting.

The second:- The airline safety expert was repeatedly questioned about the safety record of African airlines, and had to answer a number of questions about the quality of Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet (in particular the age of the planes). I certainly don’t remember similar questions being asked after the Air France crash last summer.

Reuters' Addis-based correspondent Barry Malone wrote a post on the company's Africa News Blog titled Ethiopian plane crash should not sully success story:

When news of the Ethiopian Airlines plane crash broke this morning my heart sank at the thought of covering yet another negative story about Ethiopia.

It’s particularly galling for Ethiopians that the airline is one of the few international success stories for a country known mostly for famine and war.

When the news emerged I also immediately knew how hard the company’s staff would take it. I’ve been to the sprawling campus that serves as headquarters to Africa’s arguably flagship airline many times. The last time was just last week to interview CEO Girma Wake and I left with a gift of Ethiopian coffee and the impression that I’d rarely seen people so passionate or proud about their work and what it does for their country.

Nazret.com provided running updates on the crash as the story developed through the day.

  • Much Better! Bill Gates Visits The Daily Show, Version 2.0 [MediaMemo]

Bill Gates dropped by The Daily Show last night to chat up Jon Stewart. He did pretty well!

And the Microsoft (MSFT) founder did much, much better than his first visit to the show in January 2007 — a strained conversation capped off by Gates’ abrupt/awkward departure from the set.

That makes plenty of sense: Last time, Gates was promoting Windows Vista, and that’s a task that would make anyone nervous.

This time out, Gates was talking about his foundation work, along with some esoterica like his recent foray into Twitter. He also handles Stewart’s obligatory iPhone barb fairly well.

Here’s last night’s seven minutes, followed by the last half of Gates’ first attempt. If you watch the latter, make sure to catch the last couple seconds.
