  • Fiat previews updated Abarth Punto Evo, touring car to follow?

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. So it was natural to expect that, with the debut of the mildly facelifted Fiat Punto Evo and its smoked headlights, we might expect an updated version of the fire-breathing Abarth to go with it. And this, according to reports, is our first look at just such a hot hatch.

A revised fascia isn’t the only change the new Abarth Punto Evo brings to the table. Confirming earlier reports, the new Scorpion will get a bump in power from 155 horsepower to 170, thanks to the use of Fiat’s new MultiAir engine technology. But that’s just the base Abarth. The even hotter EsseEsse model is tipped to have 200 hp on tap, perfect for doing battle with the recently revised Clio Renaultsport 200. The use of Fiat’s new dual-clutch gearbox is also reportedly in the mix, along with some LED lighting.

In a related development, Scottish racing team If Motorsport is reported to be considering bringing the Punto Abarth into the British Touring Car Championship. The adoption of new, low-cost NGTC rules for the 2011 series is the impetus, and if recent competition-spec Abarth machines are anything to go by, the BTCC could have a real thrasher on its hands.

  • Media Markt’s iPad Confirming Tweet Turns Out To Be Bogus

A tweet posted on Twitter account @Media_Markt_de resulted in a flurry of blog posts on leading tech news sites, reporting on possible confirmation of the existence and indicative pricing of the upcoming Apple tablet (including our own CrunchGear), albeit cautiously warning that there was something fishy there, considering the high pricing.

Turns out the Twitter account was indeed a fake. German electronics retailer Media Markt told IT news site Golem (in German) that the Twitter account does not belong to them at all.

In fact, the owner (or Twitter, although unlikely at this time of day) removed the account about 20 minutes ago. Looks like the handle was registered again shortly after, however, but the follower count went back to zero and there are not updates posted to the account at the time of this writing.

The original tweet leading to the worldwide coverage frenzy (embedded on top) spoke of the Apple iPad going on sale March 1st at a price of 499 Euros with contract with T-Mobile or 899 Euros without. It was deleted about 30 minutes after its original posting, leading many to believe it was in fact a slip-up by Media Markt. No, says the retailer, it wasn’t us.

One wonders why a prankster would delete that tweet if he or she was pulling everyone’s leg anyway, but I’m not even going to bother asking myself what happened.

Apple’s event takes place Wednesday, January 27th.

  • Sony launches MAG, a next-generation shooter game for the PS 3

mag 2Sony’s MAG is a very different kind of shooting game. When you step into the virtual battlefield of the persistent Shadow War in MAG, there are as many as 128 human-controlled enemy characters who will shoot you dead in a very short amount of time.

All told, 256 players can engage in first-person multiplayer-only combat in MAG, which launches today as an exclusive PlayStation 3 title. Sony’s Zipper Interactive game studio has been working on it for years, and it’s exciting to see a next-generation online game finally hit the market.

I played the final version of the game last night. In some ways, it is a very traditional shooting game experience, not unlike the massively popular Modern Warfare 2. While Activision Blizzard’s Modern Warfare 2 looks better, Sony is betting that the larger number of players in MAG will lead to a more interesting and organized battle experience. I played in games with 32 players on a side. Squads were organized into four teams with eight players each. Each squad has a commander who reports to a platoon leader, and so on. Hence, while Modern Warfare 2 is capped at 18 players, MAG allows you to have an entire command structure.

The PlayStation Network worked just fine while I played for a few short rounds. The stability of a network with so many players is what holds everyone else from trying such massive, fast-action onine games. But Sony is confident it can keep up with the network strain, no matter how big MAG (which originally meant Massive Action Game) becomes.

mag 1As I noted in our preview story, MAG is an experiment in group psychology. A player can be a lone wolf, but the test is whether more organized play will result in a tactical advantage. So far, playing with a headset is helpful. In one round, my team kept shouting to each other for someone to take out a sniper on a distant roof. Eventually, one of our own snipers complied and took the enemy out. Also, players who take on the role of medics can heal you as you bleed to death on the battlefield.

This game is a flagship title for Zipper Interactive, the Redmond, Wash.-based game studio owned by Sony and the maker of the SOCOM: US Navy Seals series of combat games. It’s also important for Sony to show that it can create games for its PlayStation Network that are superior in ways to games on Microsoft’s Xbox Live online game service for the Xbox 360.

The MAG game is set in 2025, where there is official “world peace” between nations but private corporations wage war against each other in the global economy. There are three different private corporate armies you can choose to play. Valor Company is comprised of former U.S. and U.K. special forces soldiers. SVER (pronounced “sever”) has soldiers from the downtrodden states of Asia and Eastern Europe. While the Raven Industries faction has high-tech Western European gear but is the least battle hardened.

Seth Luisi, design director at Sony, told us in the fall that one of the technological tricks it has learned is cool. It’s hard to track so many moving objects at once; but each character only sees a few things moving around at a time, so the game itself only updates data on moving objects that are within a given character’s view point.

I had to download a big update for the game before I started. But I created my own character within minutes. There are 10 different character faces you can choose from. Then I went through a short training course and then jumped right into a game.

It’s truly impressive when you move into an overhead view of the battlefield and see all of the blue or red dots moving around, each of them an individual soldier played by a real human. I used a Freetalk Everyman universal serial bus headset for Skype so that I could listen and talk during the online play. The sound quality was surprisingly good for an online game. I could hear my cohorts talk, though there was no one in command in the rounds I played.

With MAG, the battles can take on a much larger scale and even require organized strategy. For instance, players need to capture certain strongpoints on a map in order to move closer to victory. They can fire artillery barrages at the enemy, prompting air strikes against the artillery from the other side. But the air strikes won’t be effective unless the infantry advances and takes out the other side’s antiaircraft missiles. If the infantry advances far enough, then reinforcements can spawn closer to the action and make resupply easier. These actions require so much strategy that it means that the soldiers and the squads that they belong to have to be guided by smart human commanders.

The character outfits are customizable. You can decorate your character and it shows up inside the game. You can create five “loadouts,” or collections of gear that your soldier can use in different combat situations. You can create a loadout for a medic, for instance, or a sniper. You can arm yourself for close combat, electronics hacking, marksmanship, heavy support, or explosives — whatever you want.

If you choose heavy weaponry, you have more firepower, but you’ll move slower. You get to spend a fixed number of points tricking out the character; that equalizes the game since everybody gets equal treatment. This is all fairly standard in multiplayer combat. If you work your way up to level 15, you can become a squad leader, who can be in charge of eight soldiers at a time. As a squad leader, you can assign objectives to your players and give them a leadership bonus in the fighting when you are near them. You can gain double experience points if you fight as a group. That’s one of the things the game designers have done to avoid a free-for-all Lord of the Flies environment.

At 350 leadership points, you can become a platoon leader, in charge of four squads, or 32 soldiers. The highest rank is Officer in Charge, who can lead 128 soldiers. In the beta, there were six maps available, but in the final game, there are five play modes and 15 maps. You can also take time to train while offline in the final game.

There are vehicles in the game which you can control, such as an armored personnel carrier. If you move the vehicle around on the map, it can become a mobile spawn point, which means it’s the place where soldiers respawn after they die.

Your character advances based on experience points. If you level up enough, you can create your own clan, a kind of virtual posse of players who fight together. You can unlock goodies that help you fight better, such as a gun grip that gives you better aim. At any given time during the action, you can look up stats on which side is winning and who has the most kills.

I’ve been playing a lot of Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer lately. So my shooting skills are probably more advanced than the average neophyte. By the third game that I played on MAG, I managed to get eight kills and die only nine times. We’ll see if I can actually get much better. Leveling up is fast; after just a few rounds, I was ranked at No. 3 in the game’s hierarchy of experience.

I’d like to hear some feedback about how this game experience evolves as players level up and become high-ranking commanders. For now, kudos to Sony for doing a game that no one else has been willing to do.

  • Fashion4Home launches social furniture site in the US

fashion4homeFurniture site Fashion4Home, which launched in Germany in November of last year, is launching in the US today. The site will offer US shoppers 80 models of contemporary furniture across 12 categories, including exclusive designs, at 30-50% lower than traditional retail prices. The launch comes just a few days after China-based on-demand furniture maker Myfab announced its own US launch.

Cofounder Just Beyer believes Fashion4Home’s emphasis on social networking integration, specifically feedback and comments, sets it apart from competitors in the space, such as Myfab and traditional retailers with an online presence, such as Design Within Reach and All Modern. The comments are collected manually at this stage, but designers are excited about having nearly instant feedback, allowing them to create new iterations of their designs.

The US site will be very similar from a technology perspective to the German site, with a few differences in assortment and layout. The emphasis is on setting up a fast supply chain and “getting good ideas from concept to prototype to shop as fast as possible. The German site has seen sales growth of 200-300% month over month since its launch.

Fashion4Home pays designers monthly, as opposed to the traditional model, in which a provision is paid a year after the product launches. Fashion4Home is also working on letting designers freely upload sketches and letting non-designers upload photos, with the opportunity for others to comment and vote on them.

Beyer would like to see a seasonal furniture market, similar to that of the fashion industry, evolve, and he believes the site helps by offering lower prices and innovative designs. Fashion4Home is working on a sustainable, eco-furniture range, including pieces made from bamboo, which will be available for the launch of the US site.

The company has offices in Berlin and China, including 7 people who check quality in China. The company is backed by Rocket Internet, an affiliate of the European Founders Fund and the three Samwer Brothers, who have invested in Facebook and LinkedIn, with secondary investments from Holtzbrinck.

  • College Students Protest on Japanese Employment @ TOKYO

Spurred by a protest late last year by a small number of college students in Hokkaido Prefecture, a number of students in Tokyo organized for a demonstration protesting against Japan's employment system.

Coming together under the name “College Graduates Protest on Japanese Employment @ TOKYO” (就活くたばれデモ@TOKYO [ja]) , the organization process was started from scratch, using Twitter, blogs, Google Groups2ch threads and posters at universities. The protest occurred on the 23rd of January at Mizutanibashi Park (水谷橋公園). At press time, there were around a hundred participants with more showing interest. There were about a dozen participants.

The protesters revolved around the following messages:

    ※昨今の就職活動早期化による大学生活への影響を訴える!
    ※就職を求める学生を食い物にする就職情報会社へ喝!
    ※老害がしがみつく既存団体の責任はいずこへ!?
    ※新卒で就職できないと一生やり直せない!?
    ※新卒一括採用なんてなくなっちまえ!!

※ Bring to attention the impact of early job recruitments on the life of a college student!
※ Reprimand the recruiting (referral) agencies that take advantage of job seeking students!
※ Where is the responsibility of archaic employers!?
※ If graduates can't find employment right out of college, it is impossible to get a decent full time job any time thereafter!?
※ Get rid of simultaneous recruiting of new graduates!

The last point above is the most important one as it relates to the other four points. Japan has an atypical employment system where seniority is deemed more important than actual job skills. This is maintained by having employees work for the company for their lifetimes – from graduation to retirement.

The new graduates are trained as non-specialists to work for the company instead of the job itself, in exchange for the promise of a high salary in their later years. Mid-career or even post-graduate job candidates were seen to disengage the finely tuned system. Before the seniority system was implemented, Japan had high unemployment rates and the structure added [ja] due stability, efficiency and perks (companies take care of welfare, leisure, insurance, etc.) to the workforce.

However, the rapid economic growth became unsustainable in recent times. The seniority system meant that with the aging population, there was a higher proportion of the workforce “promised” a higher ranking job. Combined with the economic collapse, there are less positions for older employees available. Since it is difficult to fire older, higher-paid employees, the onus is cast upon the young, via lower salaries or temp jobs. In recent years, a third [ja] of college graduates quit their companies reportedly because they are doomed of advancement whether it is through aging or by getting results. Once one is off the rail of lifetime employment, it is difficult to recover.

This topic has been discussed extensively in the past two decades, yet change has been slow and the public has been quiet (except for maybe the violence at Akihabara). Let's see what the blogosphere thinks about the college protests in a culture where perseverance perseveres.

Blogger kanedo thinks [ja] the message outputted by this protest vilifies the corporations too far and argues that the real problem is with the system. Both the job seeker and the employer are acting upon its own best interests that incur an incompatibility between the two players.

For example, let's say one student proclaims, “a major part of college life shouldn't be taken up by job searches; therefore, I will look for jobs later than my colleagues.” Then he is disadvantaged in the recruiting process because other students have a head start on gathering information and experience. Now let's say one company says, “I'd like a college student to focus on his/her studies; therefore, we will start the recruiting process later.” Now the company is in an unfavorable position because all the ‘best' students are already taken.

Once a bad equilibrium is established, it is not rational for one player to try and move to a good equilibrium, even if it exists. This situation is famously called ‘the prisoner's dilemma' in game theory.

Blogger elm200 comments [ja] on the article above:

    上のエントリでは「構造的な問題だから、騒いでも無駄」とか書いてあったけど、若い人がそこまで賢ぶる必要はないと思うよ。たしかに本当にどうしようもない構造的な問題なんだけどさ.まずは声をあげるところからはじめないとね。

The entry above argued that “since it is a structural problem, making noise about it is of no use”, but I don't think it's necessary for young people to wise up so much. Yes, it is an impossible structural problem in the employment process, but it's important to raise our voices as a first step.

Blogger ruushu points out [ja] that the job openings and job seeker ratio of college graduates (this includes graduate students) is 1.62 for 2010. He argues that this number is actually not that bad and that if one wants to really change the job hunting process, one should enroll at Tokyo University and become a politician.

Below, I plotted the ratio of job openings and job seekers for graduates using data [ja, pdf] from the Works Institute.

    大卒求人倍率

Blogger amamako sees a trend [ja] in the blog posts about the protest. One segment of bloggers feel that the protesters should quit complaining and get a job; another segment of bloggers mention statistics on employment and think that the accusations of protesters are overstated. However, none of them take in the big picture and mention that these status quo spirit did not fix the “lost generation” of the 1990s or 2000s. He asks that since everyone agrees that the employment system is broken, why not work together to think of better ways to inform the public and make changes?

As people are making the “if you have time for protests…” type of complaints during the “lost generation,” we are coming to the brink of another “lost generation.” Are people going to make the same old arguments? You would have to be super optimistic if you think this strategy will work this time around. The self-responsibility, self-help “lost generation” have clearly failed. It is only rational to change strategies to avoid the same mistakes again.

Verizon seems to be planning on expanding its prepaid line-up and options for current and would-be customers by throwing BlackBerry into the mix. Word is that within the next three months, prepaid BlackBerry plans will become available, though we’re not sure if all devices would be included. Rumor is that the plan adds $35 on top of the voice package, which isn’t so bad when compared to other carriers and most post-paid plans. We’ve also received word that the prepaid bundles would match Verizon’s older ones, and that phones would run somewhere between the subsidized price and full retail cost. We’ll be sure to keep you guys updated on this as news comes our way!

  • Mirandizing Terrorists…Please Explain This To Me

“…The Independent chairman and the ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins, demanded that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab be charged as an enemy combatant rather than in a U.S. criminal court.

The decision to charge him in a criminal court “almost certainly prevented the military and the intelligence community from obtaining information that would have been critical to learning more about how our enemy operates and to preventing future attacks,” they said in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and Obama’s counterterrorism adviser John Brennan….” (source)

Of course as everyone knows (and has most likely yelled at the TV about) is that Crotch-bomber Abdulmutallab is being afforded the right to remain silent and the right to an American tax-payer funded public defender.

Yesterday, Judge Andrew Napalitano and Shepard Smith were both criticizing Lieberman, Collins and any Americans that agreed with them. I believe the Judge said something like (and I’m paraphrasing) [“they agree until they get pulled out of their house and taken down to GITMO”]. What? Judge, the difference is *I* am an AMERICAN CITIZEN. Seriously, does that not matter? Is anyone that enters the country afforded our protections –even if they were trying to blow us up and I missed that history class?

Is this mandated by law or does this administration actually think of terrorism as a criminal act…regardless of what they say? I want to understand.

  • 45 Americans Sought Asylum in Britain

“…statistics show that between 2004 and 2008, 45 Americans submitted asylum applications to the UK Border Agency claiming they had fled the US and were unable to go back because they had a well-founded fear of persecution. Fifteen Canadians also applied. All 60 were turned down.

A US government source said the American applications were most likely submitted by self-declared “political refugees” claiming they faced discrimination under the last administration. The applications from the US peaked in 2008, the final year of George Bush’s presidency, when 15 Americans submitted asylum claims.

Between 2004 and 2008 there were 132,640 asylum claims made in the UK, according to government statistics.

The Home Office refused to reveal the rationale behind the claims or why they were refused, saying a manual search of the records would be required, exceeding the time limit for Freedom of Information requests…” (source)

As you read this, did you totally get a mental image of these nut bags? I’m wondering if I should email the gal that wrote the article –she’s looking to interview any of the 45…I’ll tell her I think they’re all pictured here).

Truthfully, I’d love to interview one of them too… Did they return triumphantly the day Bushy left wearing a Hope & Change shirt or are they still locked in a storm cellar somewhere paranoid of America regardless of who is at her helm?

  • HTC forecasts lower margins as it bets on China

htc-quietly-brilliant-logo1 HTC has announced that it expects revenue to grow by up to 7 percent in the first quarter to around $1 billion, but margins are expected to fall from 32% last quarter to 30% this quarter as it plans to introduce lower-priced models to developing markets such as China.

HTC is quoted to have said:

"We retain our long-term bullish tone on China smart phone growth potential and likely a big revenue contributor to our growth in the next couple years,"

Arthur Hsieh, an analyst at UBS however felt  "The margin they’re forecasting is a little worse than I’d expected, but that’s something they’ll have to accept, because prices will come down if HTC wants to target the mass market."

HTC expressed confidence in leveraging their involvement with the Google Nexus One to enhance their brand awareness.  HTC will however be acting as the ODM rather then OEM for the handset, which almost certainly means lower margins and less publicity.

It is of note that the Google Nexus One sells for only $529, much cheaper than the similarly specified HTC HD2, which sells for $640, even after a price drop.

HTC’s shares dropped 1.91 percent on the announcement, and have fallen  around 15% since July 2009.

  • Have Questions For Obama? YouTube’s Got You Covered

On Wednesday, U.S. President Barack Obama will deliver his State of the Union speech, which will be broadcast live on YouTube’s CitizenTube channel as well as on The White House’s brand new iPhone app.

Google is stepping up its game, as it will also give YouTube users the opportunity to ask Obama some follow-up questions in video or text.

On Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET, during the live broadcast of the State of the Union on Citizentube, YouTube will be opening up a special Moderator series for citizens to submit their questions.

Evidently, President Obama will not be answering those questions live: the days following the speech, users will be able to submit additional questions and vote on their favorites.

Next week, although Google still has to communicate the exact timing, the top-voted questions will be asked to the president in a YouTube interview from the White House, which will also be broadcast live on Citizentube.

  • Google Celebrates Kuwait’s National Day A Month Early (Updated)

A TechCrunch reader informs us that Google Kuwait has replaced its usual logo with a doodle one, as the company often does for special occasions in specific countries or on Google.com.

Google is currently putting the spotlight on Kuwait’s National Day, as evidenced by the file name (kuwaitnatlday10-hp.gif) and where clicking the logo takes you (translation).

The only problem: Kuwait’s National Day isn’t January 25 or 26, but February 25.

Update: the site changed back to normal about 15 minutes after our post went up.

To be more specific, the State of Kuwait celebrates its National Day on February 25, marking the creation of country as a nation in 1961. Kuwait celebrates Liberation Day on February 26, marking the liberation of the country after seven months of Iraqi occupation.

There’s definitely no public holiday going on the 25th or 26th of January, however, so either they’re going to keep this doodle logo and link up for a month in anticipation of Kuwaiti festivities, or someone got the date wrong.

    My money’s on the latter.

  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta spy pics interior

    Alfa Romeo Giulietta spy shots

These spy shots of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta would seem to confirm the style of the interior, which we have seen from other shots collected from the internet. Official pics of the Alfa Giulietta were already released some time back, but testing is still continuing with slight camouflage, before the unveiling at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

These are turbulent times for Alfa Romeo and a lot rests on the Giulietta being a success for the brand in the midst of a review. The Alfa Giulietta interior had been planned, but among the rather chaotic release of the first pics, the official interior became unofficial as Alfa planned to modify it and block the official photos being released, apparently on specific request of Sergio Marchionne.

The Giulietta interior is quite similar to those unofficial first pics, with some modifications being made to the central compartment of the dash. In the place of the integrated radio in the same colour as the rest of the interior, we now see a standard space that looks set to accommodate an audio system based on customer choice. Or, we could also be looking at an entry-level Giulietta where the space originally dedicated to the navigation unit has been converted into a storage spot. Other aspects of the interior, including the shape of the air conditioning vents, the steering wheel and the gear level now seem confirmed.

Today’s Nexus One may be the hottest keyboard-free Android smartphone on the market today, but it doesn’t exactly have the hottest network support. That looks like it’ll be changing soon thanks to Walmart of all places, which has put up a “Coming Soon!” page for the Nexus One, listing an impressive suite of wireless bands including 1xEvDO for 3G on Sprint and Verizon and UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900 for 3G on AT&T. Could this finally be the network-agnostic smartphone (or smartphones, as the case may be) that Google has wanted, or is it just a case of some optimistic web admin letting his fingers do the walking when writing up this teaser? We’re leaning toward the former, but there’s also a rumor of a $99 price when purchased at Walmart, and we’re having a hard time swallowing that one — if only because the Droid went for $188 there at launch.

  • Victoria Beckham Wanted To Design Luxury Hotel In Dubai

Victoria Beckham has been offered nearly $50 million to design a luxury hotel in Dubai, according to a new scoop from London’s The Mirror.

The tabloid claims the former Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer has been commissioned by Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, leader of Dubai, to create a fashion-themed ambiance for the new hotel — which will be located on Isla Moda a man-made archipelago of 300 islands constructed in the shape of a map of the landmasses of the Earth.

Victoria not yet decided whether to accept the job, but if she does, the project will find her working closely with Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld.

“Even in these credit-crunched times, the fee offered to Victoria was astronomical. She was absolutely stunned.”
