  • It’s getting tougher

obama mccain liebermanTo focus on Republicans as being uniquely and tragically mockable (well, and Lieberman).

But one-year after finally toppling waiting-out, the worst President in American History (hey, stage your rally Buchanan people!) by electing at the very worst a hopey-changey center leftest. Well a year in, we’ve lost the hopey, we’ve lost the changey, we long ago lost the leftest — and apparently we’ve lost the center too.

A three-effing-year spending freeze on every thing but our ability to build bigger, better, bombs and stage more occupations of others. The National Security State gets another bonus so that most every actual American gets little security while every non-American gets to worry about the opposite of security. Seems like an idea David Broder could love, like an idea only John McCain and a Republican could have.

Good thing we made that guy President, huh?

Congrats on coming back to the Obama team, David Plouffe — hope you like beating up the people who voted for your guy, he sure seems to. Yesterday the President stated he would rather be a good one-term President than a mediocre two-term President.

Well, Barack, how about a little of each? Because you seem determined to get there.

  • Nook becomes Colorware’s latest victim

Look, we know we give Colorware a hard time — mostly because it regularly spits out miscast creations like the abominable Kindle or the unlovable DSi — but in the case of the Nook we’re a lot more ambivalent. Sure, on the one hand you can concoct clashing color schemes like the one above that only someone from Portugal can truly appreciate, but if you slide past the break you’ll find tasteful color combos are possible as well. Perhaps it’s the Nook’s simple logo on the back and straight-line color separation, but this is one instance where we might actually be willing to shell out the $125 asking price for a fresh paintjob. Hit the source link to try your hand at designing a prettier Nook yourself.

    [Thanks, Kent]

  • Volvo Sold to Geely by February 8

Just like its Swedish neighbor Saab, Volvo is currently involved in a complicated selling process that has until now reached several critical milestones. A new one is to be achieved on February 8, if the latest rumors on the matter are indeed true: Ford is looking to sell Volvo by early February, a move that will transfer around $1.8 billion into its accounts.

Obviously, both companies are still tight-lipped when it comes to this particular subject which, in most cases, is the first sign that… (read more)

    Article Tags: Lawrence Solomon

A UK parliamentary committee, the Science and Technology Committee of the House of Commons, on Friday announced an investigation into the Climategate emails, entitled “The disclosure of climate data from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.” This is the sixth body known to have opened investigations into Climategate, and the first parliamentary body.

The terms of reference for the parliamentary inquiry, which will hold an oral evidence session March 10, relate to the integrity of the data produced by the Climatic Research Unit at East Anglia University, the Independent Review that the university established to look into Climategate, and the extent to which CRU’s data has been integrated into the datasets of other international organizations. The parliamentary committee’s terms of reference are:

The Science and Technology Committee today announces an inquiry into the unauthorised publication of data, emails and documents relating to the work of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA). The Committee has agreed to examine and invite written submissions on three questions:

—What are the implications of the disclosures for the integrity of scientific research?

—Are the terms of reference and scope of the Independent Review announced on 3 December 2009 by UEA adequate?

—How independent are the other two international data sets?

  • feature: Seven Samurai in space: Ars reviews Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect made waves in the world of eastern-style RPGs, but the game had some major flaws that dulled the experience. On the 360, the vehicle sections where you drove your land-based transport were often frustrating due to unwieldy controls. You spent way too much time in elevators as the game loaded the next section. Dealing with your inventory could be a nightmare. The PC version of the game addressed many of these issues, but Bioware certainly knew where it could go to make the game better for the much-anticipated sequel.

  • US to Turn to Small Turbo Engines

The idea of downsizing engines has been around for a while in Europe. So people can enjoy a 1.4 liter engine which produces more that 170 hp, while benefiting from low fuel consumption, low CO2 emissions and, therefore, low government tax. Now it seems that this trend will also spread to more conservative car markets, like the US, says just-auto.com.

"Over the next 10 years, this mega trend will see average engine displacement in the US reduce from 3.6-litres to 2.9-litres, moving from V… (read more)

  • Global Poverty

We have posted in the past on the fact that global poverty is falling.  This work helps quantize it rather well.  This also tells us that the ideological debate is long over.  Everyone knows what needs to be done and it looks as if progress is taking place almost everywhere.  At worst we are waiting for a few bad actors to get out of the way.

The big changes took place in south Asia and Latin America and accounted for most change.  In fairness, the next big wave of economic improvement will be visibly in Africa.  The cell phone is empowering the people hugely.

The remaining laggards are mostly in the Islamic Middle East but not the Islamic Far East.  They are determined to proceed slowly it seems.

It really informs us just how massively the world has changed in just the past thirty five years.  1970 was the end of the recovery stroke from the Second World War.  The next decade saw consolidation and minor liberalization.  The last twenty five years saw the adoption of modern methods by both China first and then India and Brazil with many others getting on board along the way.

China has now entered consolidation and India will also begin consolidation in another decade.  That does not mean a lack of growth so much as that everyone who is able to actively participate is.  Their strength will strongly accelerate Africa’s response.

The hard thing to get used to is that the US economy is continuing to fade proportionally and to have less an less impact on the global economy.  When you have spent your entire life checking US numbers as the present best case, you have a habit to break.  China is now our largest car maker having grown fifty percent this past year.  Those percentage jumps are still hard to accept.  Yet the reality is there while we drift.

Global Poverty Progress – Model Income Past, Present and Future

    January 22,2010

    http://nextbigfuture.com/2010/01/global-poverty-progress-model-income.html

There is an analysis of the model income of the world from 1970 and 2006. Model income is the level of income that is most common in the world. The graphs show on the left vertical the population with a particular income level and the bottom horizontal shows the income level. In 1970 about 50 million people had $500 of income per year. In 2006, About 100 million had $5000 of income per year.
World poverty is falling. Between 1970 and 2006, the global poverty rate has been cut by nearly three quarters. The percentage of the world population living on less than $1 a day (in PPP-adjusted 2000 dollars) went from 26.8% in 1970 to 5.4% in 2006. 1970 to 2006, poverty fell by 86% in South Asia, 73% in Latin America, 39% in the Middle East, and 20% in Africa.

An Attempt to Project Foreward 40 Years on Model Income

Goldmans Sachs had a forecast of GDP for the top 22 countries until 2050 and this was used to approximate world GDP growth. Using wikipedia estimates of future population the mean average GDP per capita was calculated. This was used to approximate the shift in modal income into the future.

There are several ways that this method could be off.

    1) The Goldman Sachs estimates could be wrong. In particular China‘s GDP is projected by some to be 20% of Goldmans estimate and some have it 200% of Goldman Sachs. Disruptive technology such as molecular nanotechnology, super robotics, cheap nuclear fusion or AGI could arrive and alter the economic picture.

    2) The World GDP may not track proportionally with the GDP of the top 22.

    3) The modal income may not shift exactly in proportion to the mean income.

    4) The population projection could be off

The biggest source of error is the first and the degree of possible error shrinks for the factors listed.

Projected Modal Income is on the last line of the table.
