  • Acer jumps on board the e-Reader, app store, tablet and Chrome OS bandwagon

    acer-handset-logo-closeup

Looking to diversify as it seeks to advance its position from the #2 to the #1 PC manufacturer in the world, Taiwanese manufacturer Acer has laid out a long list of ambitious products slated for launch in 2010. The list includes a new tablet device powered by Windows or Google’s Chrome OS, a netbook powered by Chrome OS, a six inch monochrome e-reader with European distribution as well as an application store for its Android and Windows Mobile-powered smartphones. Acer has a bit of a distance to make up if it wants to occupy the #1 slot as the worlds largest PC manufacturer — it currently has a worldwide PC market share of 13.5% and lags behind leader HP which commands a 19.8% market share. Though they’re hoping this expansion into diverse markets and, in particular, its tablet and netbook offerings will help to propel it forward as it seeks to overtake HP by 2013. Dream big, Acer, dream big.

It’s so common place now that it’s hard to imagine what it was like before Google Maps and Google Earth burst onto the scene. • Roxxxy Is The World’s First Sex Robot

    59DAA309-6AF5-43CB-8155-E90BE5909D17.jpg

Imagine the girl of your dreams. She’s perhaps 5 foot 7 inches tall, weighs 120 pounds, has dark, lustrous hair, looks great in a negligee, is always ready for action, and loves to talk about football. That’s the exact description of Roxxxy, the world’s first sex robot. Except for, you know, the being alive part.

This life-size rubberized robot is not your typical blow-up sex doll. Oh, no. Roxxxy, you see, has a personality. Roxxxy can chat with you about your favorite topics like beer and football.

    8A5D02C7-4234-4B8E-91F9-1FF1D7990B4F.jpg

Roxxxy is anatomically correct, if you know what I mean and I think you do. She has an articulated skeleton that moves like a person, but she can’t walk or move her limbs independently.

These sexbots come with various personalities. Wild Wendy is adventurous and outgoing while Mature Martha is for those who lust after MILFs. Then there’s S&M Susan who’s ready for some domination and Frigid Farah who is reserved. Why you would want to spend money on a sex robot that’s frigid is another question altogether.

Roxxxy comes with her own laptop and is connected to the Internet so she can send you loving emails throughout the day.

The doll is made by True Companion LLC, a New Jersey company, and made its debut at the recent Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas.

You can customize each doll’s race, hair color, and of course, the breast size. Roxxxy is expected to go on sale for $7,000 to $9,000.

On the drawing board: “Rocky”, a male version of the sexbot.

If you’re not completely weirded out by now, you can check out all the sexbot action at TrueCompanion.com.

  • What Does Football Have to Do With Abortion Again?

Round two of asking the question "What
does abortion have to do with football?"
    In this case, Florida Gators
quarterback Tim Tebow is trying to marry the hyper-masculine world of football
with the hyper-patriarchal belief that women should not have a basic right to
control their own fertility. Focus on the Family has dumped millions
    of dollars
into an ad to play during the Superbowl (which CBS has agreed to air despite its own "anti-advocacy policy) that tells the story of
how Tebow’s anti-abortion mother Pam Tebow refused to abort a problem
pregnancy, and risked her life to give birth to a boy that would go on to win
    the Heisman trophy.

There are many reasons to object to this ad. For those of us
who don’t find the existence of the Heisman trophy, much less any particular
winner, a compelling enough reason to give up our basic human rights, the
implicit anti-choice argument of such an ad is hard to swallow. For those of us
married to logic, the fact that there are billions of former fetuses walking
around without a Heisman trophy seems to undermine the implicit promises made
to women in the ad. For those of us who are already anxious about the
hyper-masculine culture of football, tying ads arguing against women’s basic
human rights to the sport is an alarming display of open worship of male
dominance. For those of us who just like to watch football, spoiling the game
by tying arrogant anti-woman attitudes to it is insulting.

But what I find interesting is that while most people who
watch this ad will understand that it’s meant to be an argument against a
woman’s right to abortion, in fact what I’m seeing is even more evidence that
the right to choose is critical to women’s dignity and equality.  I’m
far from the first person to point out
that the religious right has fallen
into the habit of celebrating women who made the choice they approve of, and by
accident, this puts them in the position of celebrating choice. But it really
goes deeper than that. This strategy of celebrating women who have babies when
others might not really points out how the dignity of all women—including
anti-abortion women—requires the right to choose.

Pam Tebow is being celebrated as a maternal hero right after
    Sarah
and Bristol Palin got a cover for In Touch magazine
    celebrating their
happiness at making a choice that the pro-choice movement fully supports, which
is the right to choose to give birth. The common denominator in all these
stories is that the woman at the center is being celebrated for her bravery in
making a specific choice—and that if she didn’t have the right to choose,
then she wouldn’t be a hero at all.

Under an anti-choice regime, women are not
regarded as moral actors who can do things like make choices that can be
evaluated by outsiders according to their own moral compass. If these women
weren’t given the right to choose, they would be reduced to walking uteruses,
whose feelings and choices are essentially irrelevant, since they, like all
women, make babies with pretty much no say in the matter.  But because these women live in a society that
gives them a right to choose, they are being treated like moral actors—like
    real people, even!

Not that I think the religious right particularly desires to
uphold women as moral actors who make choices. Obviously, the hope behind all
these ads and covers is to take that right away and return to a situation where
the state assumes women aren’t capable of making their own choices. These ads
are about putting a positive spin on a misogynist message. "Look!" the ads and
magazine covers say, "We don’t hate women. We celebrate them as heroes!" But of
course, they only do that because they have to, because the existence of
abortion rights has put them in this situation. Without abortion rights, even
disingenuous celebrations of women’s autonomy will dry right up.

I’m sure someone could disagree with this assessment by
pointing out that the main message of the Tebow ad and the Palin cover is that
because these women are happy with choice A, then all women should be happy
with that choice, and that therefore other choices should be eliminated. (This
is especially dangerous when considering that Pam Tebow had an often fatal
condition, and that she may be encouraging other women to die in the vain hope
    of producing a football star.)

But if you think about it for a minute, the message falls
apart. To argue that because woman A is happy with choice A, woman B should be
happy with choice A is to say that all women are exactly alike.  "All women are alike" is a standard sexist
assumption, and so people will buy into it.  But by the measurement of their own
arguments, you can see they don’t believe this—they’re admitting that
different women make different choices, and that therefore different women are,
gosh darnit (like Sarah Palin would say), different. And so maybe the same
exact choice is not right, since different people have different needs and
    desires.

The anti-choice argument is that women who make choice B
might be different, but that’s because they’ve strayed from their one true
path. The implication is that Pam Tebow and the Palins are on that path. But
what’s the evidence to say that Tebow and the Palins have it all figured out,
and that women who have abortions don’t? The Heisman trophy isn’t enough,
because most of us know at least one person (our mother) who has chosen to give
birth and didn’t get a Heisman trophy winner. Most of us know hundreds and
possibly thousands of such women.  And to
say that Sarah Palin made a choice that worked out for her is to invite someone
to ask about the choices of all the billions of women who aren’t Sarah Palin. I
can’t wear her clothes or sleep in her bed, so why do you think her exact
choice is the right one for me? If you can trust Sarah Palin with a choice, why
    can’t you trust me?

The standard sexist strategy throughout history has been to
hide women from the public eye and force women to adhere to a single standard,
to prevent these threatening questions from rising to the surface. But because
of feminism, the right wing has to at least pay lip service to the idea that
women are a diverse group and are also moral actors. Since they admit that women are
human beings, we should seize the moment and point out that therefore women
    deserve freedom and dignity.

Like people capable of making choices.

  • New polarizer film to boost contrast of LCDs more than 10-fold

A Japanese company called Zeon claims it has developed a film for the polarizing plates of LCD screens that boosts picture contrast by more than an order of magnitude. The company is already selling films for those plates to LCD TV makers like Samsung whose screens are based on vertical alignment technology. It produces films for OLED screens, too.

Zeon’s new, so-called phase difference film, however, is made from Cyclo Olefin Polymer, which makes it suitable for LCD TVs based on in-plane-switching (IPS) technology. Makers relying on IPS technology are Panasonic or Hitachi, for example. The new Zeon film inhibits the diffusion of light from the backlight. As a result, viewers get to see clearer pictures.

Zeon aims at starting mass-production of their new films within this year, marketing it to makers of LCD TVs that are 40 inches or larger. The company says the film helps to widen the viewing angle as well, making it useful for digital signs, too.

  • Apple COO: Leave AT&T Alone… [Digital Daily]

How much longer does Apple (AAPL) plan to continue its iPhone exclusivity contract with AT&T (T)? Some say until June, when the device arrives on Verizon’s airwaves. Other’s say fall.

Not unreasonable predictions given issues with AT&T’s network and the simple fact that adding Verizon would more than double the iPhone’s addressable market. But perhaps a bit over-eager — particularly in light of Apple COO Tim Cook’s remarks about the carrier during a company earnings call Monday.

Asked about AT&T, the bad press its network has been receiving lately and the impact it has had on the Apple brand, Cook defended the company.

“First of all, AT&T is a great partner,” he said. “We’ve been working with them since well before we announced the first iPhone. And I think it is important to remember they had more mobile broadband usage than any other carrier in the world. “

“And in the vast majority of locations we think that iPhone customers are having a great experience from the research that we have done,” Cook added. “As you know, AT&T has acknowledged that they are having some issues in a few cities and they have very detailed plans to address these. We have personally reviewed these plans, and we have very high confidence that they will make significant progress toward fixing them.”

Now Cook’s remarks certainly don’t preclude the possibility that Apple will end its exclusivity arrangement with AT&T. But his eager defense of the carrier suggests there’s at least a chance that it will renew it.

Of course, Apple did a hell of a job talking up the PowerPC architecture too–right up until it dumped it for Intel’s x86 design in 2006.

  • David Arquette Defends Wife Courteney Cox Against Weight Jibes

David Arquette, husband of Cougar Town’s Courteney Cox, has defended the former Friends star against a New York Times blogger, who made cracks about her weight. The writer caused outrage among readers after alleging that actresses Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Kate Hudson had “put on a little weight” at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards.

The actor, who married his Scream co-star Cox in 1999, is so disturbed about the comments that he aired his thoughts at the opening of “The Pee Wee Herman Show” in Los Angeles last week.
Arquette believes weight should never be an issue and is calling on all bloggers to be kinder.

He tells FoxNews.com: “Writing articles about people that put on weight is just wasting space for real news. And who really cares? I love round people, I love skinny people. I love people in general; we’ve got to get past labels and stop being so critical about everything. On the Internet, people find that place and think they can just speak their mind, but a lot of the time you see how mean people are. In general, we just need to be a kinder society.”

  • 1 day to go: Burkina Faso maternal mortality campaign countdown

In Burkina Faso, the health care system suffers from several recurrent problems: inadequate health infrastructure, shortages and interruptions of supplies of drugs and medical equipment, blood shortages, a lack of trained medical personnel and a lack of skilled birth attendants.

Health care facilities are often far from people’s homes, especially in rural areas, and transport is unreliable and expensive. Although the government has increased the number of community health centres in recent years, enormous disparities continue to exist between urban and rural areas.

Accountability is key in any health system. The government has to account for the implementation of its health policies. Patients are also entitled to hold accountable, medical personnel who might be responsible for abuses or misconduct, such as unlawful demands for unofficial payments, and must have access to avenues of redress. However, in Burkina Faso, accountability is rare, both at government and individual levels.

Women in Burkina Faso suffer discrimination in every area of their lives, with unequal access to education, health care and employment. Particularly in rural areas, women have little or no say in key domestic decisions. They are primarily valued as wives and mothers.

  • Google Celebrates Kuwait’s National Day A Month Early

A TechCrunch reader informs us that Google Kuwait has replaced its usual logo with a doodle one, as the company often does for special occasions in specific countries or on Google.com.

Google is currently putting the spotlight on Kuwait’s National Day, as evidenced by the file name (kuwaitnatlday10-hp.gif) and where clicking the logo takes you (translation).

The only problem: Kuwait’s National Day isn’t January 25 or 26, but February 25.

To be more specific, the State of Kuwait celebrates its National Day on February 25, marking the creation of country as a nation in 1961. Kuwait celebrates Liberation Day on February 26, marking the liberation of the country after seven months of Iraqi occupation.

There’s definitely no public holiday going on the 25th or 26th of January, however, so either they’re going to keep this doodle logo and link up for a month in anticipation of Kuwaiti festivities, or someone got the date wrong.

    My money’s on the latter.
