Bell’s Palm Pre now free — in exchange for three years of your life
How long does it take for a smartphone to go from two hundred bucks on contract all the way down to a big, fat goose egg? If you’re Bell — and the phone is the Palm Pre — the answer is right around five months, apparently. Following its August release and a couple of mid-course pricing corrections, Bell’s now making Palm’s first webOS-based device available for free just as long as you’re willing to commit to three years at a minimum spend of CAD $50 (about $47) a month. The move likely comes on the announcement of the Pre Plus, perhaps as a preemptive strike against any of its competitors planning on carrying it — and if we were Sprint right now, we’d be paying very, very close attention to these guys.

Vista or Xeta?
Had a visit to BU Bhandari, wanted to show Indica Vista to my wife. She was pretty impressed with the space. But we were in for a shock when we sat in the Xeta and found that it has more legroom for the rear passengers.I know now I have a monumental task ahead of me to convince my wife to avoid the Xeta. She is in no mood to listen.
Should I really avoid the Xeta and go for Vista. Or I ignore the numerous threads on Xeta and go ahead and please my wife.

Incase 2010 Chinese New Year Slider Case Gets its Tiger On
What isn’t transformed into an iPhone case these days? Apparently nothing. The latest slider case from Incase is a symbolic gesture of sorts since it symbolizes the Year of the Tiger for the 2010 Chinese New year. As you can see the case has a ‘digitized’ tiger like design down the back of it and will fit any iPhone 3GS/3G and iPod Touch. So eager to get this tiger beauty? Well you’ll have to take a trip to the Apple store in Sanlitun, Beijing China because that’s the only place you’ll be able to buy it – what about for those who celebrate the Chinese new year here? – Fail! -
Some driving mistakes I make. Help appreciated.
Hi,I have begun driving consistently every weekend since 4 weeks in my first car and am making few mistakes over and over. I hope this is right place to post this.
Following are the mistakes I am finding difficult to prevent:1. I get blinded when joining a right turn into traffic from left side due to Front Passenger and Passenger-side B-Pillar (I hope you got idea). I find this much more dangerous than blinding reported by people due to A-Pillar.
Attachment 2724882. I find difficult to judge the distance b/w my car and car in front left side in close slow traffic(esp those cars which have low height in comparison to mine). So have clapped my left ORVM/body with their right ORVM many times(had to pay for breaking ones ORVM once :Frustrati).
Attachment 2724903. Taking 90 tight degree turn using a lot of gap (is this ok?). The below picture will make it clear:
Attachment 2724894. Starting car up an incline without rolling backwards at-all (esp at traffic-lights with cars behind). I tend to either stall my car or give too much throttle with clutch. Also forget handbrake on at-times .
5. Cannot park my car at close spaces without anyone assisting me.
Helpful Advice/links to prevent/reduce the above mistakes will be highly appreciated.
—————————————————————–
Apart from above, other mistake I made once/twice due to my utmost silliness:– Leaving Passenger side Window fully rolled down one evening when parking in front of house. Discovered the mistake next morning only.

Amazing Spiderman Makes its Gelaskin Debut
When we where at CES a few weeks ago Gelaskins had on display only a taste of what their newest collaboration with Marvel was going to look like. Well Gelaskins was nice enough to pass along some more imagery not available at the show and it looks like vintage Amazing Spiderman and Uncanny X-Men drawings never looked so good! The collection will be available the beginning of February and will retail between $14.95 and $29.95 based on the device. At launch the Marvel designs will only be available for laptops and iPhones but you can use the DIY system and alter the Marvel skin for any of the design templates. From the looks of the high-res quality, the vintage drawings look like they got a new lease on life. -

Gov. Quinn announces grant to improve energy efficiency for large customers
Energy Program at UIUC Funded by Federal Recovery Dollars
Gov. Pat Quinn today announced that the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is the first recipient of a Large Customer Energy Efficiency Grant to help large energy users reduce the amount of energy they expend. The program is one component of Illinois’ Energy Plan, the most comprehensive effort to date to address the state’s energy production.
UIUC will receive more than $848,000 for a campus-wide energy efficiency initiative that will save $1 million per year in energy costs.
“Green energy projects like this one on the U of I campus are one of the wisest ways we can invest our capital funding,” said Gov. Quinn.
“Not only are we lowering our energy costs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil, we are putting people to work in the green economy.”
UIUC’s project will generate savings totaling more than $1 million. These savings are approximate to the amount of electricity, coal and gas energy used by over 1,000 homes annually.
In addition to the energy efficiency savings, officials estimate the project will create 18 construction and installation jobs and will help retain 36 jobs based on the annual savings.
The university will implement a number of energy-saving measures, including energy wheels in several new and renovated buildings, thermal pipe insulation, Variable Air Volume hoods and controls for the Chemical Life Services Building A, Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning Controls in the Krannert Center for Performing Center’s Mezzanine, exhaust controls in the Levis Facility, and geothermal systems for several buildings at the Allerton Park and Retreat Center.
“The ARRA-funded State Energy Program will help organizations, businesses and consumers become better stewards of the earth and help put money back into the economy through green job creation,” said DCEO Director Warren Ribley.
The Large Customer Energy Efficiency Grant Program is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and administered by the Illinois Energy Office in the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Gov. Quinn announces guidelines for Illinois’ ENERGY STAR appliance rebate program
Over $12 Million in Federal Recovery Funds Available to Increase the Use of Energy Efficient Appliances
Gov. Pat Quinn today announced the guidelines for the Illinois ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program.Illinois will receive nearly $12.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to implement the program.
“We’re doing everything we can to help Illinois residents make it through these tough economic times,” said Gov. Quinn.
“The appliance rebate program is a good way to help consumers be more economical and environmentally responsible while also boosting Illinois’ ’green job’ creation.”
The Illinois ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program will provide consumers with a point-of-sale rebate on ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, room air conditioners, and water heaters, as well as highly efficient heating and air conditioning systems.
Rebates on water heaters and heating and cooling equipment will be available beginning January 31. A 25 percent point-of-sale rebate will be available to purchasers of ENERGY STAR water heaters from participating retailers.
HVAC customers will receive an instant rebate from participating contractors that are listed on the ComEd, AmerenIU, or Participating Energy Efficiency Contractor (PEEC) Network.
The second phase of the program, which will run from April 16 – 25, provides a flat 15 percent rebate to consumers who purchase energy efficient appliances at participating retail stores.
Consumers who turn in their old appliances for recycling will also be eligible for an additional mail-in rebate of $50-$100.
“The average home spends about $2,200 a year on energy bills,” said Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Director Warren Ribley.
“By making small changes and incorporating more energy efficient practices in our daily routine, we can reduce the cost of our energy bills and reduce our impact on the environment. The appliance rebate program provides a three-fold benefit by also providing a much-needed boost to the economy.”
The Illinois ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program will be managed by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) on behalf of DCEO. The state is also partnering with the Illinois Retail Merchants Association (IRMA) to enroll retailers in the program.
Retailers interested in participating in the program can visit IRMA’s Web site at helpgreenillinois.org.
For complete program guidelines and information, visit illinoisenergy.org or call 877-782-7005.

State police were tipped off earlier this week to suspicious activity at a residence in the 500 block of Detroit Street in Hammond.
The investigation of the residence led authorities to make several traffic stops that resulted in the seizure of about 500 pounds of marijuana, police said.

Hanover Park family seeks missing postal worker
Mail carrier Richard James Wieting of Hanover Park on Saturday was described as an affable, generous and kindhearted man who loyally worked for 22 years at the Harwood Heights Post Office. So when he didn’t show up for work on Tuesday morning, his bosses and co-workers were concerned. So was his family. And they immediately began to search for him.
The 53-year-old Wieting remains missing, although his 2007 black PT Cruiser was found by Chicago police near Foster Avenue and Simonds Road, near Foster Avenue Beach, in Chicago.
About 30 family members and friends held a news conference at Foster Avenue Beach on Saturday to plea for information involving Wieting’s disappearance and to seek volunteers to pass out fliers and search the area.
They will meet again Sunday around noon to do the same, said his daughter Marla Wieting, 26, of Schaumburg.
“This is very out of character for him,” she said.
Wieting is described as 6-foot-2 and about 185 pounds. He was last seen on Monday night at home with his wife of 29 years, Joyce, and their daughter, Michelle, 20, a Harper College student.
The father is on heart and cholesterol prescriptions, which remain at home. So the family is concerned for his health and welfare since he also hasn’t had his medications since he was reported missing, said Marla Wieting.
There were no indications of any problems with her father in prior days and no known threats that would have alerted them to his sudden disappearance. He was in good health and happy, the eldest daughter added.
“He’s the kind of man who would do anything for anyone, so it’s time that we now did something for him to try and find him,” she said.
Messages left with the Hanover Park police on Saturday were not immediately returned. The Chicago Police Department referred all inquiries to the Hanover Park police.

MUST READ: SPPI Monthly CO2 Report: December by Christopher Monckton, SPPI
Article Tags: CO2 Level, Lord Monckton
The authoritative Monthly CO2 Report for freezing December 2009 warns those skeptical of extremist claims about the climate not to crow too soon: the faction profiting from the scare will not give up. Editorial Comment: Page 3. Professor Bill Gray demonstrates that hurricanes have grown less intense as the world has warmed. Pages 4-6. IPCC assumes CO2 concentration will reach 836 ppmv by 2100, but, for nine years, CO2 concentration has headed straight for only 570 ppmv by 2100. This factor alone almost halves all of the IPCC’s temperature projections. Pages 8-9. Since 1980 global temperature has risen at only 2.5 °F (1.4 °C)/century, not 7 F° (3.9 C°) as IPCC predicts. Pages 10-12. Sea level rose just 8 inches in the 20th century, and has scarcely risen since 2006. The oceans are not warming. Pages 13-14. Arctic sea-ice extent is now beyond its summer low, but there was more summer ice than there was in 2007 or 2008. In the Antarctic, sea ice extent reached a record high in 2007. Global sea ice extent shows little trend for 30 years. Pages 15-18. Hurricane and tropical-cyclone activity is almost at its lowest since satellite measurement began. Page 19. A cold start to winter set snow and ice records across the US and Eurasia. Pages 20-21. Sunspot activity is back to normal: but, looking back it was a long – and cool – solar minimum. Page 22. i20-Initial Ownership report
My i20 has completed 5000 kms now and I thought that it was the ideal time to write an initial ownership review. I bought the i20 Asta petrol from Advaith Hyundai. We relocated to Bangalore after a long stint outside the country and I was not sure about the car to buy. I initially looked at Linea and the Jazz. The entry level Linea did not seem to have good quality switches / interiors and my leg would hit the dummy pedal whenever I pressed the clutch. The Jazz anyway was overpriced.
I drive in the city mainly and do about 1200 kms on an average. Safety features were high on my list and I felt that the i20 scored impressively in that area. The power was not too bad for city driving and it had great looks. After waiting for 8 weeks, my silver Asta petrol was finally delivered.
Initial impressions:
I felt that the clutch is a little soft and takes a little time to get used to. Initially, I would tend to jerk the car to a stop when taking off at traffic lights but later things got better. Its got spacious interiors and visibility is good. There might be a bit of a blind spot due to the pillars but I guess that’s common in many cars there days. One surprising thing I noticed was that the car has a strange way of unlocking the doors.
For example: If I’ve used the central locking knob on the front door and all the 4 doors are locked, I can unlock the front door by just pulling on the front door handle directly(without first unlocking using the knob)!! This happens on the front doors only and not on the back doors. This surprised me and I called up the Hyundai blokes. I was finally routed to an engineering / customer service team in Chennai. I told them that this could be dangerous as kids or adults might just pull on the handle and the locks will open. Anyway, I was given an unconvincing explanation that kids are best seated in the back seat and adults might not make that mistake etc…I know all this but I still felt that this was not a very safe feature.
Another feature about the locks is that they can be programmed to lock automatically once the car crosses 40 kmph (they wont lock automatically as soon as you start the car). I liked this feature and I also liked the fact that the central locking does not unlock as soon as we switch off the ignition.
The dual tone interior is pretty good and the switches have a quality feel to them. Nice storage areas abound. A spacious glove compartment and boot really help. Surprisingly, there’s no vanity mirror in the Asta version too. The dash design is great too. When I test drove the Jazz, my hand would hit the dash whenever I take my hand off the steering to change the gear because the Jazz has a central protrusion of the dashboard. No such problems here.
Highways:
I had taken it to Chennai and it felt nice and planted at speeds of 100-120 kmph on the highway. I haven’t really tried to go faster but my opinion is that for sustained speeds of 140 kmph or more, this size of car may not be the right/safe choice.Maybe this is because I was used to bigger car before this one. I also found it reassuring that the Asta comes with ABS.City Driving:
The ground clearance is great and I’ve never had a problem on Bangalore roads. The fuel efficiency is approximately 12 km/l and this was achieved in bumper to bumper traffic which Bangalore is notorious for. I still fondly recall the empty roads from my college days and I guess it will remain a fond memory for a long time to come! At really slow speeds, the second gear is bad but I have a habit of shifting to 1st whenever I have to really slow down on speed breakers so that helps a bit.Other thoughts: The sound quality of the stereo is pretty good. Apart from the trip meter, its got a time to destination clock that I find useful. All in all I find this a great car and probably Hyundais best looking car in India. After reading tons of reviews on the Internet, I thought that Ill write one for a change. I hope that this review will be useful.
