  • Glacier scientist: I knew data hadn’t been verified by David Rose, Daily Mail

Article Tags: David Rose, Headline Story, Himalayan Glacier Data

The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.

Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research.

In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report’s chapter on Asia, said: ‘It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action.

‘It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.’

Dr Lal’s admission will only add to the mounting furore over the melting glaciers assertion, which the IPCC was last week forced to withdraw because it has no scientific foundation.

According to the IPCC’s statement of principles, its role is ‘to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis, scientific, technical and socio-economic information – IPCC reports should be neutral with respect to policy’.

  • Hicks agrees to sell Rangers to Nolan Ryan group

noalryan.jpgTom Hicks has agreed to sell the Texas Rangers to a group that includes Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.

The sides announced Saturday night that they had finally reached an agreement, eight days after a 30-day exclusive negotiating window expired.

The group is headed by Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg.

The purchase price is expected to be more than $500 million.

The next step is the transaction has to be reviewed by baseball’s executive and ownership committees.

Then at least 75 percent of baseball owners would have to approve the transfer of ownership from Hicks to Greenberg’s group.

A group of 40 lenders holding debt from Hicks Sports Group also has to approve.

There is a chance the deal could be approved before the April 5 season opener.

  • Sungworld’s Android MID fights the future

We don’t think we’re over-reaching when we say that this device, Sungworld’s just-unveiled 7-inch, Android touchscreen MID looks a bit… well, Apple-ish, and we hear that the UI (which we haven’t yet seen in action) will take cues from the company as well. Regardless, this thickish-looking puppy will boast an ARM926 CPU, 128MB of memory, 2GB of storage, and two USB ports. It’s also supposedly going to be available in pink, blue, green, purple and black, and though we don’t know pricing yet, we assume that if that tablet we’ve heard so much about in recent weeks fails to materialize next Wednesday, well… okay, this won’t be a great stand-in. Sorry.

  • U.S. loses to Honduras 3-1 in World Cup warmup

usworldcup.jpgCARSON, Calif. — The United States opened its 2010 schedule of World Cup warmups with a resounding thud.

Fellow World Cup qualifier Honduras thoroughly outplayed a second-string U.S. lineup, winning an exhibition game 3-1.

Defender Jimmy Conrad was ejected by Mexico referee Benito Archundia in the 17th minute for his second yellow card, given for an off-the-ball foul in the penalty area.

Carlos Pavon, who put a penalty kick over the crossbar during last October’s World Cup qualifier, converted his kick this time in the 19th.

Jerry Palacios split the defense to beat goalkeeper Troy Perkins with a 6-yard header off Pavon’s cross in the 37th, and Roger Espinoza made it 3-0 in the 53rd, slotting the ball in from 8 yards.

  • City donates ambulances to Haiti relief

Three retired Chicago ambulances soon will be on their way to Haiti to help in the earthquake relief effort, officials said today.

The ambulances were too old to remain in service in Chicago, Fire Commissioner John Brooks said.

So the city’s Department of Fleet Management helped recondition and restock the ambulances with medical supplies provided by private firms to give them a longer life.

The city will pay for the gas needed for off-duty firefighters to drive the three vehicles to Florida, Mayor Richard M. Daley said.

The city is also working to set up informational sessions to help Haitians earn temporary protection status from the Department of Homeland Security. “Dates will be soon announced,” the mayor said.

A blood drive is also in the works, he said.

So far, 157 refugees have been brought to Chicago since the earthquake, the mayor said.

  • Twitter’s Project Mayhem Dilemma

project-mayhemIn the film Fight Club (the book has a slightly different plot), the members of Project Mayhem’s main goal is to blow up the buildings that contain credit card companies’ records so that everyone’s debt is reset to zero. (Yes, I know this wouldn’t actually work, but never mind that for now.) Yesterday, two Twitter users, Allen Stern and Louis Gray, proposed the same idea for Twitter. That is to say, with the new suggested users list (SUL) now in place, they’d like to see Twitter reset the follower counts of users (either just those that have been on the SUL in the past, or everyone) to zero, and start over.

The core idea behind this is that anyone on the SUL leading up to the change has gotten an unfair advantage in terms of the number of followers they now have on Twitter. Leaving aside the fairness of it, it certainly is true that just about every person with over a million followers on the service only got that many because of the SUL. And while you may wonder why anyone cares about the number of followers they have, for some accounts, such as those tied to blogs, a huge number of followers is beneficial in terms of clicks coming into the site when links are tweeted out. TechCrunch has certainly benefitted from this, as have a number of other large blogs on the SUL.

As we showed yesterday, the new version of the SUL has drastically altered the rate at which new followers are being added to these accounts. And in many cases, people on the list are now actually losing followers. But as I noted, those who were on the old SUL are unlikely ever to be caught in terms of followers by anyone else now given these new rates — hence, the call for the resetting of the counts.

It’s an interesting idea, but not one that is likely to happen. After all, if Twitter did a reset of users on the old SUL, it would mean breaking all the relationships accumulated over months or even years by those accounts — including plenty completely unrelated to the SUL. And while that may seem more fair to some, to at least as many, it would just be annoying — you would have to follow those accounts all over again. Meanwhile, resetting every user on Twitter to zero followers would just piss everyone off. And the complete distruction of the social graph could even threaten Twitter as a service itself. All social networks, whether they are Twitter or Facebook, are only as strong as their social graphs. Twitter wiping it own out, giving user less of a reason to return would be foolish.

So where does that leave us?

Well, as I said, in reality, nothing is likely to change. While it is a bit odd that the users on the old SUL (including @techcrunch) will continue to have follower counts in the millions while no one else does (except for maybe eventually the hard-charging @billgates), there really isn’t a good solution (or at least one that Twitter would be willing to do). But one thing Stern is concerned about with regard to the inflated follower counts is that anyone who was on the list can use it to their advantage for publicity. A simple solution to that would be to remove the follower count entirely. I wrote about this in length back in April. If Twitter were to simply not tell you how many people are following you, it would remove a huge part of why it matters so much (to both those on it and not on it): vanity. Of course, that wouldn’t be a perfect solution either because it wouldn’t take a smart third-party developer long to figure the follower numbers out through Twitter’s API.

Twitter is well aware that the original SUL was a less than ideal solution. No less than co-founder Evan Williams admitted back in October that he wanted to kill it off. But the fact remains that it did and still does serve a purpose. Without a suggested users list, most people who sign up for Twitter would have absolutely no idea who to follow and would simply leave. While statistics point to a good number of users doing that even with the SUL, Twitter is unlikely to have gotten to where it is today without this type of feature. It would have been the classic problem of: no one I know is using the site so I’m not going to use it either.

As I see it, Twitter’s only real solution is to keep improving this new SUL. While they say it’s already being dynamically updated frequently as determined by a number of unnamed factors, they should really work to make even more personalized. Maybe you get the default category SUL (as it is now) when you first sign up, but depending on your tweets (assuming they’re public), Twitter could offer you more personalized recommendations on who to follow. And they could also do what Facebook does and suggest friends based on other friends you have in common (something which it is promoting even more now, so it must be working).

Thanks to their new geolocation API, Twitter could also do some interesting things with recommending users who are nearby to you at any given moment. That may sounds a little creepy, but as long as it’s opt-in, it might be useful for some.

Undoubtedly, whether they say so or not, Twitter sees this type of SUL backlash as a minor bump in the road. After all, they have their goals set much higher then the millions of users they currently have. They want Facebook numbers, and beyond. If that happens, users will a million followers won’t be so uncommon, and the old SUL advantage will be rendered moot. It’s still a big “if,” but I would bet that’s their thinking on the matter.

  • 2 die in Sugar Grove plane crash

Two people were killed tonight when a small plane crashed into a home in a subdivision near Waubonsee Community College in the far west suburb of Sugar Grove.

The two fatalities were both in the plane, while four people were in the home at the time of the crash, said Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Pat Gengler.

Citing earlier information the FAA had said one fatality was in the plane and one on the ground when the small, single-engine plane crashed into a home in Sugar Grove.

However, Gengler said the early report was incorrect.

The plane was en route from Aurora to the Denver area, according to an FAA recorded message.

Ken Voight, who lives about  1/2 mile from where the plane went down at about 7:15 p.m., said the plane went down inear Route 47, across the street from the north entrance to Waubonsee Community College.

The crash occurred about 3 miles north of the Aurora Airport, he said.

The residence hit by the plane is a large home at the corner of Route 47 and Old Oaks Road, with an address of 43W420 Old Oaks Road.

Voight said he was sitting down to eat dinner when he heard a “very low” flying airplane over his home. He said while planes routinely fly over head from the airport, this plane appeared to have engine problems.

“This one came much lower than normal, really loud engine noise like [the pilot] was really trying to get the engines to go, and then maybe 10 seconds later we heard and felt the impact. … It shook our house.” said Voight. “It flew so low over our house that my wife and I both ducked our heads.”

Voight said that after the explosion he and a neighbor jumped into a car and drove to where the noise had come from. He said some of the debris was in a vacant lot across the street from the north entrance of the college.

“All we saw was a lot of small fires widely scattered, like campfires,” Voight said.

Voight said another neighbor told him that the plane appeared to circle overhead once, and as it was circling overhead again the plane went down. Voight said there was fog in the area.

  • Speck Fitted Artsprojekt Cases Review for iPhone 3G/3GS

_DSC0456The Speck Fitted Artsprojekt Cases, as we reported back in December, are a deviation for Speck from their usual pinstripe and relatively reserved designs. This new collection is vast and exclusive to Speck and features designs from the Artsprojekt Global Creative Network. There are currently only three of these cases available so far, and the one that struck me the most was Cutie Pie. I guess it could be the red hair or maybe the teddy bear hood – who knows…

We received some samples of the Speck Fitted Artsprojekt Cases. This Speck fitted case is comprised of a hard shell case with a soft fabric which has the artwork printed on it. It’s durable yet lightweight and also includes a plastic frame that snaps on to the front of the iPhone. Installation was easy, all you need to do is place the back portion of the case on the back of the iPhone and then snap the second portion into place from the front of the iPhone.

The Speck Artsprojekt Fitted case is pretty lightweight and when you hold it in your hand it doesn’t feel like you are holding a brick or something bulky, like a lot of the other iPhone cases tend to feel. The soft fabric also doesn’t make your palms sweat and contours to your hand nicely. The case also leaves openings for ports and buttons. The only issue with the case I would foresee is that since it is wrapped in fabric, you’ll have to be a bit careful not to get it dirty because it can probably absorb stains and dirt. If it did get dirty, I would be nervous to use a hard a chemical to attempt to clean it and then possibly harm the design.

Overall, the Speck Artsprojekt case is a unique standout case in a very crowded marketplace of iPhone cases and accessories. It showcases not only originality but also functionality with a strong design and sturdy case. As we mentioned earlier, there are currently only three designs available: Cutie Pie, Disease #2, and Love and Death, but many more will be launching as the months go by. We actually got a sneak peek at a few of them at CES and met with the designer behind Love and Death who was as excited as we were with the lineup. He also also hinted at some collaborations with Speck that may go beyond just iPhone cases – only time will tell. In the meantime you can purchase the Speck Artsprojekt Fitted cases from Zazzle for $39.95.

The Good: Unique design concept, colorful and artsy designs, case is easy to grip and easy to set-up

The Bad: The soft fabric can get dirty if you’re not careful

  • Andy Dick Arrested

No laughing matter: Comedian Andy Dick was arrested in Huntington, West Virginia on suspicion of sexual misconduct early Saturday morning, a Western Regional Jail spokesperson has confirmed.

Dick found fame as an actor and funny guy before a stint on VH1’s Sober House in 2009. The celeb was arrested on sexual abuse charges following an incident after his performance at a local comedy club. According to The Huntington Herald-Dispatch, Dick, 44, allegedly groped two patrons of the bar Rum Runners hours after his appearance at the comedy club Funny Bone. He was reportedly arrested around 4 AM. The Huntington Police Department confirmed the arrest and charges to The Associated Press later on Saturday.

Andy reportedly faces two first-degree felony sexual abuse charges. The former The Andy Dick Show star has a checkered past with the law; he is serving out a three-year probation following a 2008 arrest on suspicion of drug possession and sexual battery.

  • Magic wand bomb detector deemed fraudulent, inventor imprisoned

iraqRemember back a few months when news broke about a little device that claimed to detect different sorts of bombs? The ones that the Iraqi government spent $85 million on over the last few years even though American military commanders and the FBI stated that they simply don’t work. Well, as we all assumed, the ADE-651 is a sham. It’s just a dirty racket. Good thing that the British government finally caught on, banned the device and threw the inventor in jail. (He’s out on bond as of writing)

It seems that the heart of the device is ID badge-sized cards that are supposed to be used for detecting different items. There are different cards for everything from TNT, plastique, to even money and elephants. However, as the Cambridge Computer Laboratory found out, these cards contain nothing more than a dumb RFID tag. Seriously, watch the BBC investigation video after the jump.

ADE-651-278x300The device is supposed to work on the same principle of finding water with a stick, dowsing. The scary thing is that this was never hid from the Iraqi government who purchased thousands of them at a cost of $40,000 per unit. The damn things aren’t even powered. It’s just a radio controlled car antenna on a hinge connected to a plastic grip with a wire leading to a RFID card reader. Who knows if the card reader even did anything.

Jim McCormick as quoted by the TimesOnline,

“We have been dealing with doubters for 10 years. One of the problems we have is that the machine does look a little primitive. We are working on a new model that has flashing lights.”

The ADE-651 isn’t McCormick’s first unit. Randi.org states that he has sold $85 mil worth of the devices over the past 10 years. Interestingly enough, James Randi previously offered up a $1,000,000 purse to whoever proves that dowsing actually finds anything. McCormick never took the test.

An export ban on the ADE-651 and similar devices start next week in Britain. McCormick was arrested on suspicion of fraud by misrepresentation but later released on bail. Who knows what will happen to him and his company, ATSC. But even if the courts take him down, five more companies will likely spring up around the globe and take up his cause of scamming governments while putting people at risk.

  • Barrett-Jackson 2010: The Blastolene Indy Special

Blastolene Indy Special – Click above for high-res image gallery

We said earlier that the Bonneville Boss Transporter with its Proud American land speed rocket was the most unique vehicle at the auction. Well…we might just have to take that back. Behold this “1952 Watson Roadster” (that’s what it’s registered as, at least) built by the Blastolene Brothers, better known as the Indy Special. You might remember some of the other Blastolene creations including Leno’s tank car, the Hemi Trike, and Piss’d Off Pete.

The Indy Special is everything you’d expect from a Blastolene-built car. Like Leno’s, it has a 1792ci M47 Patton tank engine, although naturally aspirated, producing 910 horsepower and 1500 lb-ft torque. At 270 inches long and a weight of 8400 lbs the sheer size is enough to impress just about anyone. Just about everything on the car being hand-built including the aluminum body, and we’ve heard it cost over $400,000 to make. That makes the final price of $280,500 actually seem reasonable.

  • GDC attendees getting free Droid or Nexus One, perfect for Palm’s training session

Unless you’re press or a booth worker, major industry trade shows can be educational, enlightening, relaxing… dare we say even fun events that actually don’t fill you with dread at their mere mention. Of course, the trade-off is that you (or your employer, if you’re lucky) are then responsible for fronting the hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars that organizations command for passes to those events. So what do you get in return apart from a few days of schmoozing with some of the most important people in your line of work and the opportunity to play with cool stuff and steal as many promotional pens and USB sticks as you possibly can? In the case of GDC this March, attendees who sign up for either the Mobile / Handheld Summit, the iPhone Summit, or the Independent Games Summit will be gifted with their choice of a Droid or Nexus One, representing the hottest, latest Android gear from Motorola and HTC, respectively — potentially prime targets for the yet-to-be-tapped 3D gaming market on the platform. With Palm onsite, it should make for some interesting dynamics — but then again, they’re giving these things to people at an event called the “iPhone Summit,” for crying out loud.

  • Diabetes is a disease

Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or sugar, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to give them energy. With Type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. With Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, your body does not make or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood.
Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause serious problems. It can damage your eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a limb. Pregnant women can also get diabetes, called gestational diabetes.
Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes may include fatigue, thirst, weight loss, blurred vision and frequent urination. Some people have no symptoms. A blood test can show if you have diabetes. Exercise, weight control and sticking to your meal plan can help control your diabetes. You should also monitor your glucose level and take medicine if prescribed. You can take your medicine through online pharmacy easly.
