iHome's new clock radios will ensure neither you nor your iPhone ever sleep too late
If you tend to think of iHome as a company that makes things iPhones and iPods can be seen sticking out of, we’re here to reinforce that impression with the unveiling of three new clock radio dock devices for Appley goods.
    • iP90 Clock Radio/Audio System: This is the latest clock radio from the company, displaying a sleek design (pictured above) that’s much more visually appealing than the last one we saw and, interestingly, sports a sync button that will suck the time right out of your iPhone and use it to set the device. No more swearing at yourself for scrolling too quickly past 9:54pm.
    • iP42 Dual Alarm Clock Radio: This version (pictured after the break) slims things down a bit and, honestly, uglies them up a bit compared to the iP90, but adds the ability to manage two alarms at once. Sync button makes an appearance here, too.
    • iP39 Kitchen Timer and FM Alarm Clock Radio: Wrapping things up is a cooking companion, featuring stainless steel accents that are said to provide “the look and feel of a premium kitchen appliance.” Sadly we have no images of this Bertazzoni wanna-be, but we do know that it’s designed to be easy to clean, also sports an alarm clock, and adds a dual bake timer into the mix as well.
No release date or prices for any of these at this time. Can your sleep cycle handle this kind of variety? We don’t think so.

Modder merges Bose headphones with inline Apple remote, shows you how
Everybody knows that Apple’s default headphones aren’t the best, and while many would argue that those from Bose aren’t exactly top-notch either, they’re surely a step up. What if you want Cupertino’s inline controls and some over-the-ear isolation from Framingham’s most famous foreign-sounding speaker company? That’s what Freddy Deeble wanted, and that’s what he achieved. What seems like a challenging feat is actually a reasonably straightforward mod if you have some soldering skills — and a general disregard for warranties. The whole process is described in a thoroughly helpful video after the break but, as always, don’t call us if you wind up with a set of severed wires and a smoldering pile of rosin.

    [Thanks, Freddy]

  • Sony NW-A845 Walkman slips into European hands, too thin to be noticed

There’s an old saying that the Japanese keep the best to themselves, but not this time. Sony’s finally man enough to let go of their “slimmest ever Walkman,” the NW-A845, to our European cousins. Apart from the obvious (and ever-so-useful) fresh injection of Latin-based languages, we’re not seeing much difference with the almighty Japanese version (NW-A840) from September: 7.2mm thin, 2.8-inch of OLED goodness, 29 hours of marathon listening and premium EX earphones. Unlike the buffet in Japan though, there’ll only be one “Falcon Black” 16GB model of unknown price for Europe, available for grabs in February.

South AfricaIf you’re bullish about Brazil, Russia, India, and China, then don’t forget there is an entire second tier of less-appreciated-but-giant economic growth stories — the MAVINS.

Commodities play a major role for these economies.

They are uniquely positioned to feed and benefit from global economic growth via their relative commodity advantages, yet at the same time, they have massive domestic market expansion opportunities due to a surplus of under-utilized land or people.

With the right policies, these nations are likely to blow away expectations over time and become leading powers in their regions. The MAVINS combined economies could easily equal 60% of today’s America by 2020, over 200% of today’s America by 2050, and then keep growing robustly thereafter.

  • Gov. Quinn Signs Consumer Protection Bill; Residents Can Now Fight Back When Health Insurance Claims Are Denied

Gov. Pat Quinn today signed a bill into law that will provide greater consumer protection to Illinois residents with health insurance.

The new law ensures that all denied health insurance claims can soon be reviewed and decided upon by a qualified, independent doctor.

“This important consumer protection legislation will improve health insurance in Illinois and help people fight back when claims are unfairly denied,” said Gov. Quinn.

“This new law guarantees the right to an independent review of denied claims for everyone with health insurance in Illinois.”

Under current State law, only Illinois health consumers who are enrolled in a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) have the right to an independent, external review when claims are denied.

However, millions of Illinois residents, with other types of health insurance coverage, do not have this important right.

Effective July 1, House Bill 3923 extends the right to an independent review of a denied claim to all Illinois residents with health insurance coverage.

The new law will allow Illinois residents to submit their health insurance claim for an external review after it is denied by their insurer.

The external review will be conducted by a qualified, independent doctor, who is selected by a nationally-accredited and Illinois Department of Insurance-approved Independent Review Organization.

The external review is binding and must be completed within 20 business days. In certain urgent cases the review must be completed within 72 to 120 hours.

Also under the new law, insurance providers that cover small businesses must accept a standard insurance application by Jan. 1, 2011.

This new requirement means small businesses, which usually do not have dedicated human resources departments, will not have to fill out long and often complex applications that differ from one insurer to another.

The standard application enhances insurer competition and makes it easier for businesses and individuals to shop around for the best and most affordable insurance, according to the Illinois Department of Insurance. This law also applies to individuals who will now be able to use a standard health insurance application.

The standard application will be developed by a committee of consumers, small business owners, insurance agents and insurance company representatives. The committee will work with the Illinois Department of Insurance.

  • Somali pirates hijack vessel carrying 2,388 Hyundai / Kia vehicles

Hyundai Genesis - Pirate Jack Sparrow

A vessel carrying vehicles from Hyundai and its sister company Kia was hijacked by Somali pirates last week. The ship, known as Asian Glory and operated by EUKOR Car Carriers, was hijacked on New Years day while on its way to Saudi Arabia after departing from Ulsan.

According to statement today from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritimes Affairs, the vessel was carrying a total of 2,405 vehicles including 2,388 from Hyundai and Kia.

“As soon as the vessel embarks, all risks related to the vessel are the responsibility of the distributor,” Hyundai said in an e-mailed response to Bloomberg. “All payments for the cars have been made, while the cars are also insured.”

The hijacking of the vessel was among the first successful attacks on merchant ships in the 500-mile security corridor since July.

Hyundai Motor and Kia have asked for a quick and safe return of the crew, the Korean automaker said.

  • Detroit Preview: HP2g Revenge Verde Super Car

Last year, the HP2g E85-powered Mustang was at the Detroit Auto Show, and things were looking pretty good for Doug Pelmear and his 110 miles-per-gallon equivalent plan. He was participating in the Automotive X Prize and was confident he would at least win the popularity portion of the AXP thanks to the classic looks of his entry vehicle.

Fast forward a year and things haven’t turned out quite as well as Pelmear had hoped. In June, he and his team acrimoniously dropped out of the X Prize, and while the HP2g Mustang still made a few appearances, the company’s next vehicle – the Revenge Verde Super Car – was supposed to be at the LA Auto Show last month. It wasn’t. Thankfully, when the Detroit Auto Show kicks off next week, Pelmear will be on hand at the NAIAS Green Zone with the Revenge Verde from Revenge Designs Inc.

Like the Mustang, the Revenge Verde uses the V8 HP2g engine that is supposed to get 110 mpg. We’ll get more information from Cobo Hall next week, but what we’ve heard before says that the V8 engine puts out 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque with CO2 emissions under 200 g/km. Stay tuned for more.

  • Pandigital Photo Mail Frame Powered by AT&T’s Goblins, Service-Charge Free. Ish. [Pandigital]

Whether you love ’em, loathe ’em, or couldn’t give a flying fuckaroo, AT&T make waves. They’ve hooked up with Pandigital for an eight-inch LED photo frame that accepts emailed images directly to a dedicated addy. Not me, an email address.

The first 300 pics are for free, and after that it’ll cost ya. You don’t need WiFi, as the images are sent via the AT&T wireless network, and there’s no service fee. Photo management is handled by Snapfish, and you can use the frame as a normal digital photo frame.

But the best thing about this invention? It’s the perfect gift for old people you don’t like. Send ’em horrible pr0n pictures and watch them – NO. My resolution for 2010 is to be nicer to everyone.

  • LinkedIn Sets Up Its First Outpost in Mainland Europe

The social networking space seems pretty locked-in. Facebook easily dominates and its once potential rivals, notably MySpace, are losing ground. Its stronghold is the US, but it’s doing well in almost any market it’s in. The market for a mainstream social network is pretty much dead at this point, but smart players like LinkedIn are cornering other more niche markets, not without a fair share of success. The professional-oriented social network is seeing solid growth and has now opened its second office in Europe an the first one in Continental Europe, hoping to increase its influence in the region.

  • Cadillac CTS tops Consumer Reports’ luxury sedan face-off, still not recommended

    2009 Cadillac CTS

The Cadillac CTS earned an overall score of “Excellent” in a recent test of five luxury sedans by Consumer Reports’ for the Feb. 2010 issue of the magazine.

The CTS, which outpointed competitors from Acura, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Lincoln, ended up with an overall road test score of 84. Following behind was the Acura RL with 80 points, Mercedes-Benz E350 and Audi A6 with 79 points, and the Lincoln MKS with 75 points.

“With excellent driving dynamics, a smooth and punchy drivetrain and a well-furnished interior, the CTS outscores some of the best imported luxury sports sedans,” said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut.

Well that should be some good news for GM and Cadillac right? Wrong. Apparently Consumer Reports says that the CTS’s “below average reliability” prevents the publication from recommending it.

Hit the jump for the press release.

    Press Release:

CADILLAC CTS TOPS CONSUMER REPORTS’ TESTS OF LUXURY SEDANS BUT RELIABILITY REMAINS AN ISSUE

CTS outpoints Acura RL, Mercedes-Benz E-350, Audi A6, and Lincoln MKS

YONKERS, NY – The Cadillac CTS posted an “Excellent” overall score and outpointed competitors from Acura, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Lincoln in Consumer Reports’ testing of five luxury sedans for the February 2010 issue.

The CTS earned an “Excellent” overall road test score of 84, outdistancing freshened versions of the Acura RL, which earned a “Very Good” score with 80 points, the redesigned Mercedes-Benz E350 and freshened Audi A6 and which both earned “Very Good” scores of 79 points, and the Lincoln MKS which earned a “Very Good” road test score of 75 points. The CTS trails only the Infiniti M35 among all luxury sedans in the category that CR has tested, but below-average reliability prevents CR from recommending it.

The new E350 has a slightly roomier interior and retains the same high quality materials and fit and finish of the previous E-class, but it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor’s great ride and handling. The Audi A6, now five years old, still holds its own against even the newest luxury sedans. The Acura RL has a smooth and refined powertrain, but it’s not the most exciting sedan to drive. The Lincoln MKS came with the uplevel EcoBoost turbocharged engine, which is bundled with AWD.

In an Auto Test Extra, Consumer Reports also tested the Lexus HS 250h, a new hybrid sedan that received an “Excellent” road test score of 83, slightly higher than the Prius.

Prices for the luxury sedans as tested ranged from $50,660 for the Acura to $55,245 for the Mercedes-Benz. Only the Acura is recommended. The Mercedes-Benz is too new to have reliability data. Because CR tested the Audi A6 3.0T and MKS Ecoboost with newly introduced engines, CR cannot predict their reliability. CR only Recommends vehicles that have performed well in its tests, have at least average predicted reliability based on CR’s Annual Auto Survey of its more than seven million print and Web subscribers, and performed at least adequately if crash-tested or included in a government rollover test.

Full tests and ratings of the luxury sedans test group and the Lexus HS 250h appear in the February issue of Consumer Reports, which goes on sale January 5. The reports are also available to subscribers of www.ConsumerReports.org. Updated daily, ConsumerReports.org is the go-to site for the latest auto reviews, product news, blogs on breaking news and car buying information.

The CTS gives up virtually nothing to the premium European cars tested in terms of refinement, powertrain, ride, or handling. The ride is supple and controlled and handling is agile and sporty. The Cadillac CTS Premium RWD ($50,995, Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price as tested), is powered by a 304-hp, 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine that delivers lively performance and gets 19 mpg overall in CR’s own fuel economy tests. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts responsively. Braking is excellent. The interior is plush, with well-fitted padded panels and nice touches of wood and chrome. It has a moderately-sized trunk.

The Acura RL is a pleasant and refined car, but the driving experience isn’t special enough to justify its $50,000 price tag. The car is full of electronic conveniences, but the ride and backseat are not as comfortable as those found in competing vehicles. Handling is sound, but less sporty than most of its competitors. The Acura RL AWD ($50,660 MSRP as tested), is powered by a 300-hp, 3.7-liter V6 engine that is smooth and slick and delivers 19 mpg overall on premium gasoline. The five-speed automatic transmission is very smooth and responsive. Braking is very good. The RL’s high-quality interior has impeccable fit and finish. For a car in this class, the RL’s trunk is modest.

The redesigned E350 doesn’t ride as comfortably or handle as well as its predecessor. Handling is still capable, but not exceptional, and the ride isn’t as absorbent as before, but still the E350 is quick and quiet, solid, comfortable, and luxurious. The Mercedes-Benz E350 RWD, ($55,245 MSRP as tested), is powered by a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers smooth and strong performance and 19 mpg overall on premium fuel. The seven-speed automatic transmission usually shifts smoothly. Braking is very good. The interior is nicely finished with padded panels and high-quality materials. The trunk is good-sized.

Audi freshened the A6 with a new, supercharged engine that improves performance while retaining decent fuel economy. Handling remains responsive and secure, the seats are very comfortable, and the interior is nicely finished. The A6 Premium 3.0T Quattro AWD, $53,075 MSRP as tested), is powered by a 300-hp, 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that delivers strong acceleration and 20 mpg overall on premium fuel. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. Braking is very good. The rich interior is trimmed with high-quality materials and panels are tight- fitting. Trunk space is good.

The MKS, which is based on the Ford Taurus, doesn’t do much to set itself apart for its higher price. It has many amenities and well-finished interior but the driving experience is ordinary. The Lincoln MKS Ecoboost AWD, ($52,770 MSRP as tested,) is powered by a 355-hp, 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine that provides strong performance and gets 18 mpg overall. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly. Braking is very good. The inviting interior has thickly padded and stitched panels and nicely detailed front perforated-leather seats. The MKS has a good-sized trunk, but its opening is very short.

Though pleasant overall, the HS 250h doesn’t have the refinement, quietness, and ride comfort associated with the Lexus brand. The cabin is narrow and handling is unexciting. The Lexus HS 250h Premium Hybrid ($38,939 MSRP as tested), is powered by a 187-hp 2.4-liter 4 cylinder hybrid electric/gasoline engine that delivers adequate performance and excellent fuel economy at 31 mpg overall. It can drive up to 26 mph on electric power alone. The CVT transmission works very smoothly. Braking is very good. The interior trim uses high-grade materials. The trunk is modest.

With more than 7 million print and online subscribers, Consumer Reports is one of the most trusted sources for information and advice on consumer products and services.
