  • Mini USA launching Laurel Sport Edition

When’s the last time there was a car like the Mini? When people aren’t busy buying the same car in slightly different lengths and heights, Mini is painting them slightly different colors and charging more. It appears the last one, the Rally Clubman, sold so well that Mini’s got another special edition in the works called the Laurel Sport.

There will be 300 Laurel Sports offered in the U.S., 100 for each the hardtop, Clubman, and convertible. They arrive next month, just in time for the Olympics to be over, but the aim here is “classic British style.” That means a John Cooper Works aero kit, driving lights, 17-inch alloys, black mirror caps, special door sills, side skirts, and stripes. And that’s not all: There will be a summer version and a winter version, the former getting performance tires, the latter with all-season tires and the Cold Weather package.

If you’re still reading this and haven’t called your Mini dealer already, prices will be $29,695 for the hardtop, $31,445 for the Cooper S, and $34,545 for the convertible.

  • The Evolution of Science-Based Business: Innovating How We Innovate

    Published: February 19, 2010
    Paper Released: January 2010
    Author: Gary P. Pisano

    Executive Summary:

Science has long been connected to innovation and thus to the business enterprise. However, the nature of the connection between science and business in recent decades has begun to change in important ways. On the one hand, we have witnessed the decline of corporate industrial laboratories. At the same time, we have seen the emergence of a new class of entrepreneurial firms that are deeply immersed in science in sectors like biotech, nanotech, and more recently energy. HBS professor Gary P. Pisano examines the changing nature of the science-business intersection and describes the emergence of a science-based business as a novel organizational form. He also describes the institutional and organizational challenges created by this convergence. Key concepts include:

    • Science-based businesses face unique challenges as they straddle two worlds with very different time horizons, risks, expectations, and norms.
    • The professions of management and of science are still largely separate: Scientists receive no formal training in management, and MBAs receive no training in science. This is a striking gap.
    • Today the “invisible hand” of markets increasingly governs science-based businesses. Assessing this form of governance against the requirements of science-based businesses suggests the need for organizational innovation.

Stealing more content from our polish friends, the above video taken at Mobile World Congress shows a great implementation of DLNA on the Toshiba TG02, making it appear rather effortless to throw music, video and photos onto your big screen or view it on your small one.

DLNA is a consumer feature we often see from companies like Toshiba and Samsung who have consumer electronics heritages, rather than from HTC who have no connection at all to your living room, and may be one of these features which would tempt a buyer into getting a TG02 rather than a HD2.

  • Inflation’s Not Here Yet: Headline CPI +0.2%, Core CPI -0.1%

Analysts were expecting 0.3% for the headline and 0.1% for the core.

This means major breathing room for Bernanke. Yesterday’s hot PPI number had heightened concerns that traditional inflation measures were coming on a lot faster than expected.

The numbers seem to be soothing to markets. Stocks remain modestly lower, but have hardly budged.

    The status quo lives!

Those who argue that the Fed’s little tightening like that isn’t the beginning of a major cycle change have a little more on their side now.

  • HAPPINESS TIP: How to Recover Your Happiness after Life Knocks You Over !

    tornado

Feeling challenged, stressed, depressed, miffed, pissed off, pissed on — and as if you – and you alone — are being singled out by the fates to suffer?

Stop thinking about what’s wrong in your life, and starting thinking about how to create more right in your life! You can do it!

Thankfully, there are certain proven tools which will empower you to get back on track after adversity strikes. In my book, THE BOUNCE BACK BOOK (click here for more about my Anthony Robbins + Deepak Chopra loved book) I offer many tips for thriving in the face of adversity. Here are some CLIFF NOTES to keep you from leaping off that cliff into hopelessness, dammit!

    1. Feeling means you’re dealing means your healing. Confront, tolerate and feel your pain. If you can do this, the pain will eventually get smaller and ultimately disappear. But don’t push yourself to move on too quickly–you have to nurture your wounds appropriately. If you don’t like to express your suffering verbally, keep a journal. Dig deep into your feelings by writing them out.

    2. Turn off the tube. Watching TV produces low levels of satisfaction because it doesn’t challenge you. Instead, do something that raises your self-esteem. Tap into your ‘signature strengths’—things you’re good at or passionate about.

    3. Step outside yourself. Volunteering is a great way to look outside your own problems. Giving back to makes you happier by both giving you a sense of purpose and helping to put your problems in perspective.

    4. Get a ‘mental rental.’ Sit in a quiet place and consciously think about optimistic future goals or happy memories. Make a list of five great moments from your past and five future events you’re psyched about. Envision as much detail as you can. What are you wearing? How are you standing? What scent is in the air? By tapping into positive thoughts, you can actually change your body chemistry.

    5. Keep perspective. The hard time you may be experiencing is merely a ’slice’ of your life, not your whole life. Think about your future — and realize that you don’t want your life to be defined by this one circumstance. Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of everything you do have in your life – rather than what’s missing. You may even ‘bounce back’ higher because you’ll learn to appreciate other important things in your life.

    6. Change your mood with food. During difficult times, it’s best to cut down on sweets like cookies, cake and candy. Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit to help prevent blood sugar dips and spikes.

    7. Let go. When you feel stuck in a hard time, jump-start a pro-change attitude by letting go of possessions that no longer work for you — like old clothes and old shoes. When you get rid of physical things that that ‘weigh you down,’ and start to feel lighter — you’ll witness how by letting go, you’re making room for new things to enter your home/life. As a result, your subconscious will know if you let got of emotional burdens, you’ll likewise be making room for new better people and experiences to enter your life.

  • We’ve Just Gotten More Proof That Bernanke Has Been Replaced Already

    bernanke

    Look at that.

Dow futures are down by only about 30 now, despite a very signal that the Fed — however they want to word it — has begun the tightening cycle.

    Nobody cares.

Compare this to the sturm und drang last week when the PBOC raised reserve requirements for Chinese banks. Everyone thought that was a big deal, and markets swooned right after it happened (though by the end of the day they had recovered).

We said it on January 12. Bernanke has been replaced, and now we’ve got more evidence.

  • Hyundai reportedly increasing Tucson production to meet surging demand

2010 Hyundai Tucson – Click above for high-res image gallery

Every automaker was expecting, or at least really hoping for, a dramatic rise in sales at the beginning of this year. Something in the lower double digits would have been an excellent start, a nice way to bring in the new year. Hyundai is one of those for which such dreams came true – the Korean automaker’s dealers posted a 128-percent increase in sales in January.

Among the popular vehicles in the showroom blitz was the 2010 Tucson, leading Hyundai to boost production to meet demand. It’s a great problem to have, especially after selling just 15,000 of the previous model last year. Hyundai America’s CEO said the company foresees a “huge boost” this year. Part of that can be attributed to the troubles faced by a certain Japanese automaker, while another chunk of that gain is simply down to the fact that Hyundai is making some very good machinery.

  • He Owned a Plane

I mean, can you really complain about being broke and raped by the IRS if you own your own plane?

Robbie over at Urban Grounds has the entire story of Joe Stack (he works 2 miles from the crash scene).

From what his commenters are saying, the MSM has wasted no time in labeling this guy a “right wing tea bagger”…they are dying for someone to take the spotlight from Obama activist Amy Bishop. But take heart my friends…the end of Stack’s diatribe has two telling lines that make it obvious he’s not one of ours:

You can read the entire manifesto at the Urban Grounds link above, but this is the last part:

“…I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different. I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let’s try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well.

The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed.

    Joe Stack (1956-2010)”

I realize this will be an ever-so-small technicality to the folks at WashPo, CNN or HuffPo, but a Tea Party Patriot (or any Conservative for that matter) would never praise the Communist ideology while casting aspersions on free market Capitalism…the entire Tea Party movement revolves around SMALL government (the polar opposite of Communism) and even if they choose to ignore that glaring fact, we know it.

  • Here’s How The Eurozone Actually Created The Greece Loophole Back When It Accepted Italy

    Berlusconi Italy

It turns out that the Eurozone regulatory loophole Greece potentially used to understate its debt might have been purposefully created by the Eurozone itself — as a way to accommodate Italy’s entry back in 1997.

If so, it shows how one slippery exception can render an entire regulatory system irrelevant.

    Bloomberg:

When the European Union predicted in 1997 that Italy’s budget deficit would exceed the threshold to qualify for the single currency, it buried in the fine print the observation that with “additional measures” the Italians could pass.

They did, thanks to a one-time tax and a yen-denominated swap. It was an early example of the balance-sheet fiddling deployed since then by countries eager to share the benefits of a $13-trillion market and lower borrowing costs, yet unwilling to cede control over their budgets, wages and welfare systems. Now Greece, by setting a standard for fiscal creativity, has exposed the flaws in Europe’s hybrid of monetary union and fiscal indiscipline.

  • AdWords Collections Attempt By Google Mutates Into Antitrust Lawsuit

Last year, we wrote about an odd antitrust lawsuit against Google by a company named TradeComet. The lawsuit was a joke. Basically, the company was an arbitrage player that tried to create spam-like pages that people would find on Google searches, and would make money by then getting people to click on pay-per-click ad links to get where they really wanted to go. Google properly classifies sites like this as spam, and its ranking methodology punished the site accordingly. It had nothing to do with being “anti-competitive,” it was just Google making sure its search results were better for users. That lawsuit is basically in a holding pattern right now, as the judge considers Google’s motion to dismiss.

However, a similar lawsuit has popped up, and it’s a bit strange. Eric Goldman has all the murky details, of how a shopping search engine named myTriggers apparently got a line of credit from Google and used it to buy a bunch of AdWords search ads to drive traffic to its site (and then raised money based on the resulting traffic). Once again, Google rejiggered its algorithm, and suddenly the ads for myTriggers were a lot more expensive (by one to two orders of magnitude). The company couldn’t pay its bill to Google, so Google hired a local lawyer (in Ohio) and went to court to try to get myTriggers to pay the $335,000 it owed. Simple enough.

Except that myTriggers returned fire by claiming antitrust violations by Google, and even went out and hired three separate lawfirms, including (conspiracy theory time) the same law firm that represented TradeComet and which is closely connected to Microsoft. As Goldman notes:

I am struggling to make sense of myTriggers’ litigation choices. Assuming myTriggers even has the money, writing a $335k check to Google (and I bet Google would have taken less!) is almost assuredly cheaper than paying three law firms to mount an antitrust assault on a $20B/year behemoth. Assuming that myTriggers wants to maximize profits, then either (1) myTriggers thinks its odds are good enough that it will win AND make enough money to pay the 7 lawyers on the counterclaim’s signature page plus their teams, or (2) the law firms struck an unbelievably sweet deal on fees.

Goldman also notes that Google probably wishes it hadn’t filed a claim in a local Ohio state court, as the antitrust battle might now need to be fought there, rather than in a friendlier federal court closer to home:

Whatever the case, I suspect the antitrust claims caught Google flat-footed. A simple and low-stakes collections matter has blown up into a potentially significant lawsuit in an undesirable forum. Google chose Ohio state court for the collections matter despite its AdWords contract, so now it will have a tough time extricating itself from that court. But I suspect it would rather have an antitrust case in federal court, not state court–often (but not always) federal judges are more sophisticated than state judges and less susceptible to hometown bias. And I’m sure Google would rather fight antitrust claims on one of the coasts than in the Rust Belt, especially if myTriggers argues that Google’s evilness cost Ohioans jobs. Google probably didn’t mean to offer battle in this venue, but someone did a really good job of seizing the opportunity and forcing Google to fight the battle in a suboptimal setting.

As with the TradeComet case, the antitrust claim from myTriggers sounds incredibly weak, and it probably should be thrown out, but given the uncertainties of it being filed in the local court, Google may have to take it a bit more seriously. And, of course, the possibility of a secret Microsoft connection makes this even more interesting. Still, I can’t see this getting that far in the long run. I hope that the judge recognizes the basic weaknesses of the case: here’s a company that relied entirely on a single supplier who had every right to change its policies if it felt it didn’t deliver a good customer experience, and it did so. myTriggers now seems to be suing as some sort of sour grapes for its own business failings.

  • China Secretly Buying U.S. Treasuries Because Deep Down They Can’t Get Enough.

    chinatank.jpg

China isn’t actually selling down its U.S. Treasury holdings, according to macro strategy firm GaveKal. They’re just using different avenues to buy them. In the end they’re hooked no matter what fears investors could hold about a Chinese pullback from U.S. debt.

    Globe And Mail:

“We do not believe that the Chinese are dumping Treasuries,” Arthur Kroeber, managing director of GaveKal Dragonomics, a Beijing research firm, told Associated Press. “What they are doing is diversifying the channels through which they make these purchases so that it is much more difficult for the market to ascertain what they are doing.” The U.S. Treasury identifies only the country of origin of the direct purchaser of its securities. So any bonds acquired through London, for example, would show up as a sale to Britain.
