  • How search can solve big data problems

There are many solutions for figuring out how to parse large amounts of data, but LucidWorks CTO Grant Ingersoll has a suggestion: use search. At GigaOM’s Structure:Data conference in New York City Thursday, Ingersoll laid out his case for why search is a big part of dealing with databases and indexes.

“Search should be a critical part of your architecture,” he told attendees. It is a system building block for any large problem you’re trying to solve that requires a ranked set of results. And it doesn’t have to be just text search, it can be for any type of search, he said.

Thinking beyond traditional search features, like keyword search, will help businesses solve those problems more easily too. And it lets organizations bring in many differing kinds of data sources and more effectively combine them.

And organizations that keep records of how people are using search to access their data, they have the best current view into the quality of their data.

His main message was to give search another look. “There have been interesting changes in the way we can model relevance in the search engine,” he said. “If you’ve dealt with last-generation search technology, you should revisit this because there’s a lot more capabilities here.”

  • How To Really Measure a Company’s Innovation Prowess

Who is the world’s most innovative company? The editors of Fast Company say Nike. Last year, number crunchers at Forbes found that Salesforce.com is the company with the highest “Innovation Premium” baked into its stock price. MIT Technology Review didn’t pick a winner, but on its recent list of top 50 “disruptors,” the magazine mixed stalwarts such as General Electric and IBM with up-and-comers, Square and Coursera.

The difference of opinion isn’t a new thing — in fact, if you look back a few years at similar lists you’ll see less than 50% overlap. Why? Perhaps a company’s ability to innovate doesn’t last long. Or perhaps it is difficult to really tell how well a company’s innovation engine is functioning — so magazine editors are susceptible to the latest hot product or service.

There’s no doubt: measuring “innovation” is a fuzzy business. Part of the problem is there isn’t a clear consensus on what marks an innovative company. But there are some measurements that try.

Since the primary purpose of innovation for private companies is financial impact, ” Return on Innovation Investment (ROII) is a reasonable, aggregate measuring stick for innovation — you can calculate ROII by taking the profits or cash flows produced by innovation and dividing that figure by the cumulative investment required to create those returns. Conceivably, this ratio could look backwards (measuring the actual results of historical investment) or forward (measuring the expected value of current investments in innovation).

While ROII can be of some utility, it doesn’t precisely measure how a company achieved a particular result. That’s where the Dupont analysis come in.

In the 1920s, while companies used return on equity to assess their performance, DuPont recognized that the single metric had its limits. So it began disaggregating return on equity into three components.

Return on equity (net income divided by equity) results from multiplying three key operating ratios:

    1. Profitability (net income over sales)
    2. Operating efficiency (sales over assets)
    3. Financial leverage (assets over equity)

This simple formula provides rich insight into a company’s business model, and can quickly diagnose a company’s strengths or opportunity areas.

With Dupont in mind, we can come up with a better measurement by sub-dividing ROII as follows:

    1. Innovation magnitude (financial contribution divided by successful ideas)
    2. Innovation success rate (successful ideas divided by total ideas explored)
    3. Investment efficiency (ideas explored divided by total capital and operational investment)

This split would highlight different innovation strategies available to companies. Companies that played it relatively safe could have a high success rate, low magnitude, and high efficiency. A company could achieve the same returns by compensating for lower success rates with higher efficiency or magnitude.

This kind of breakdown would be valuable for both leaders and investment analysts who want to assess a company’s innovation capacity. It might even turn out that this framing highlights a few archetypical strategies that are more (or less) appropriate for different corporate circumstances.

One challenge today is that few companies have these numbers at their fingertips, and the lack of common definitions and publicly available statistics makes benchmarking difficult. Simple questions, like “what defines an idea?” or “what does ‘success’ mean?” need to be answered in consistent ways.

Given how critical innovation is for a company’s long-term success (and sometimes survival), perhaps it is time to mandate that publicly traded companies regularly report on their innovation pipeline and the key drivers of their innovation performance.

Until they do, at least be wary of the next company that graces a magazine cover. After all, half of the top 20 companies traded on U.S. equity markets* on BusinessWeek’s 2008 list ended up underperforming broader market indices between March 2008 and March 2013. While strong performance by Amazon.com and Apple meant an investment in those 20 companies beat an investment in the S&P 500, Blackberry (see Research in Motion), General Motors, Nokia, Sony, and Toyota certainly have had their share of difficulties over that time period.

    * The top 23 also included India’s Tata Group and Reliance Industries and Germany’s BMW.

  • Seth MacFarlane Splits With Emilia Clarke

Perhaps singing about seeing other actresses’ boobs isn’t the best way to keep a relationship together, even if it did help this year’s Oscars become one of the most memorable airings of the award show in recent history.

E! news is reporting that Family Guy creator and Oscar host Seth MacFarlane has broken up with his girlfriend, Emilia Clarke.

The report’s unnamed source didn’t blame MacFarlane’s behavior, however. The split is supposedly due to the performers’ different work schedules, which left them on different continents. The source told E! that the couple “have remained friends.”

MacFarlane is working in the U.S. while Clarke is shooting the hit HBO TV show Game of Thrones in Europe. Clarke plays Daenerys Targaryen in the TV show, which is adapted from a series of popular fantasy novels authored by George R. R. Martin. MacFarlane is currently working on directing a movie called A Million Ways To Die in the West, which will star Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson, Sarah Silverman, and Charlize Theron.

  • WhatsApp dominates download charts, but it may have a hidden weakness

    WhatsApp Market Share
WhatsApp has reigned as the undisputed messaging app champion across dozens of countries over the past two years. However, huge download volumes in all these countries doesn’t necessarily translate to high consumer engagement. A research firm called Mobidia has provided BGR with a fascinating comparison chart providing a direct engagement level comparison between WhatsApp and its major rivals in some of the biggest mobile markets. Mobidia chose a cut-off-point of 2 MB per month to make sure it is counting only consumers who truly use a messaging app actively.

  • Bing Expands Its Knowledge Graph-Like ‘Snapshots’

Last year, Bing launched its “Snapshots” feature, which shows direct answers for searches on the results page. The feature was updated in December for people and places, and it looks a great deal like Google’s Knowledge Graph. Today, Bing announced that it has expanded the offering to include more.

“For Bing, search is about more than blue links,” a spokesperson for Bing tells WebProNews. “It’s also about understanding the entities – people, places, things – around us and the relationship between them. With people and places being two of the most common searches on Bing, we want to ensure that whether you’re looking for the details on your new coworker, the official Facebook page of your favorite celeb, or who won best actress in 2010, Bing gives you the answers you’re looking for quickly and in one place.”

    Bing

Bing’s Richard Qian discusses the changes on the Bing blog. “The underlying technology for Snapshot is designed to develop deep understanding of the world around us not only as a collection of entities (people, places and things) but also the relationships between those entities,” he writes. “Inside the Bing engineering team, we call this technology Satori, which means understanding in Japanese. Over time, Satori will continue growing to encompass billions of entities and relationships, providing searchers with a more useful model of the digital and physical world.”

“Today, we are inviting people to check out Snapshot to experience our expansion of Satori,” he continues. “Since its introduction in June, we have expanded Satori to include a significantly larger number of entities from more domains with a deeper level of understanding about them. They include people, places, and things which are among the most common searches on Bing. So, whether you’re searching for answers about a celebrity, co-worker, animal, geographic location, or man-made structure, Bing helps you understand the world around you by providing at-a-glance answers about the people, places and things you care about.”

Bing’s offering sprinkles in social information from Twitter, Facebook, Klout, and LinkedIn for people. Qian shows examples for “leopard, Abraham Lincoln, Lawrence Ripsher, John Kerry, and Mount Everest.

  • Getting beyond the cult of big data

Basho CTO Justin Sheehy, whose company supports the Riak database, wants people to get beyond thinking that they can implement some kind of “big data strategy,” in order to drive success. In a rapid-fire talk at Structure:Data 2013 in New York, he explained the concept of cargo culting and how organizations today seem to rely on that as opposed to really figure out what they want data to do.

Cargo culting is derived from the behavior of people in the Pacific Islands during World War II who watched U.S. airmen drop cargo from planes on the islands. They would see someone walk out into a field, wave some batons in the air, and then boxes of clothing and food would fall on the runway. Sheehy said that to this day on certain islands, someone will walk out onto old airfields and wave sticks in the air in hopes that some food and clothing might fall on them.

He used that analogy to argue that people in business are behaving the same way around big data. They don’t have a real strategy or even goals, but are just hoping to copy the technologies that others are using to wrangle their data. He ended with a bit of a diatribe:

“Strategy is not about how you do things. Strategy is about why you do things, and why you do things is about you. So if you stop asking about ‘How is this better than Hadoop,’… and instead you start asking questions about why your business should take a specific course of action or not, then you have a chance to stop being a cargo cultist and start being a strategist.”

  • Planck satellite data: What it can tell us about the universe

    Planck-Satellite

An artist’s rendering of the Planck satellite. Courtesy of: ESA

Today—March 21, 2013—the much-anticipated cosmological results from the Planck satellite have been released. In a recent blog post on her own website, TED Fellow and cosmologist Renée Hlozek describes why this is a big day for astrophysics and cosmology. We asked her to explain what the excitement is all about.

“Planck is the ‘next generation’ satellite that measures the tiny fluctuations in the temperature and polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) – which is light that comes from shortly after the Big Bang, and has been travelling towards us for over 13 billion years,” she says.

“Planck has been operating in space since 2009, and will dramatically increase the precision with which we can measure this radiation, which tells us about the physical conditions of the universe at very early times. We use this data to fit a cosmological model, to figure out what the universe is made of, its properties and how it is changing with time. So today is a big day because it further refines our picture of where we came from and where we are going on the grandest scales imaginable!”

Planck results are now available at the Planck Legacy Archive »

  • The Cast of Dead Island Riptide Can’t Catch A Break

Dead Island Riptide, sequel to 2011′s popular open-world first-person zombie RPG, is set to launch in April. Besides showing off an offensive collector’s edition, we haven’t seen much of what the sequel will do with its tropical zombie setting. A new trailer offers a few more details.

In the latest trailer for Dead Island Riptide, it reveals that the party from the first game find themselves on a military ship. Soon after, the ship crashes on a new island with a new zombie infection to deal with. The government wants to cover up the situation by nuking the island. It’s a decent idea, but one that probably won’t bode well for the future if the Resident Evil franchise is any indication.

Dead Island Riptide will launch across the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on April 23.

  • CalPERS CIO: Cleantech has been a noble way to lose money

The country’s largest pension fund, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, has lost a considerable amount of money investing in clean technology. CalPERS had close to a 10 percent negative return (9.8 percent) on the around $900 million that it’s put in the cleantech sector, which includes $460 million that it’s put into clean tech venture funds, said CAlPERS CIO (chief investment officer) Joseph Dear at the Wall Street Journal’s Eco:nomics conference on Wednesday night.

Over the past five years, CalPERS has been one of the largest sponsors of cleantech venture-backed innovation. Dear said CalPERs received one tenth of the capital back from its cleantech fund, and has now dialed back on both its investments in venture capital as well as cleantech VC funds. CalPERs has also tried to be more careful with its partner selection, he said.

“Just because it’s a good idea doesn’t make it a good investment … This has been a noble way to lose money.”

Across the CalPERS portfolio, Dear said, he has to make a 7.5 percent a year return.

The indictment is the most definitive one I’ve heard to date confirming that for the most part, the experiment of venture capitalists investing in cleantech didn’t work. There are a few funds that have done fine, and are launching new cleantech funds like The Westly Group. Khosla Ventures, Braemar Energy Ventures, DBL Investors and Lux Capital are also still investing in cleantech. But the list continues to shrink.

VantagePoint Capital Partners CEO Alan Salzman said during the same panel that corporations are stepping in to pick up some of the cleantech investments. VantagePoint recently stopped raising a planned billion dollar cleantech fund due to lack of interest from limited partners.

But according to the Cleantech Group’s figures, corporate investing also has been dropping every quarter throughout 2012. Corporate investors put $31 million into cleantech startups in the fourth quarter of 2011, and that dropped to $26 million in Q1 2012, $24 million in Q2 2012, $20 million in Q3 2012, and $18 million in Q4 2012.

  • Vegas: 98 Arrests Made During Union Protest

A protest on Las Vegas Boulevard on Wednesday culminated in the arrest of 98 union protesters.

According to a Las Vegas Sun report, the protesters were members of Culinary Union Local 226. The protest took place outside the The Cosmopolitan hotel and casino.

The union states that it has been in contract negotiations with Deutsche Bank, the owner of The Cosmopolitan, for over two years and “have not come to an agreement on major issues.” Worker contracts are scheduled to expire on June 1.

The arrests came after some of the protesters sat in the middle of Las Vegas Boulevard, blocking traffic for over an hour. The protesters in the road were well aware that the act would likely result in their arrests. According to the Vegas Sun, they were surrounded on walkways and sidewalks by over 2,000 of their fellow protesters.

  • Facebook’s Threaded and Reorganized Comments Rolling Out Next Week

Back in November of 2012, Facebook began testing a new commenting format for page posts. The new system added comments threads, allowing users to reply to specific comments, and also implemented a new ranking algorithm that sorts comments by their popularity.

Now, that feature is about to go live.

Facebook tells TechCrunch that the new threaded comments will rollout on Monday, on an opt-in basis. That period will last a few months, and Facebook will eventually push the new system to everyone in July.

“We think this update will allow for easier management of conversations around posts, which is a better experience for people interacting with Pages and public figure profiles,” said a Facebook spokesperson.

Basically, the new comment threads let users reply to individual comments. So instead of one long flow of comments, which can be confusing, you will be able to follow entire conversations based on one original comment.

And the best comments should rise to the top. Facebook’s new algorithm makes sure that you see the comments that are the most engaging – meaning having the most likes and replies. The algorithm also takes into account your connections, so you could see a different comment on the top of a post than your friend does – depending on who you know.

Here’s what the comment threading will look like courtesy of the Huffington Post, who is already using the new system. As you can see, users are now able to comment on other comments. The cream has been pulled to the top, if you will, with the most engaging comment thread appearing at the top:

    Facebook comment threading

Not everyone is getting comment threading and the new ranking. It will only be an option for pages with over 10,000 followers, and it won’t be available for personal accounts at all. It’s also not going to be available on mobile – but Facebook hopes to add that functionality soon.

  • Samsung’s market share lead expected to double says analyst

    2012_handset_share_IHS

With some analysts projecting Samsung’s new Galaxy S 4 will push the company back ahead of Apple in the worldwide smartphone market, the impact could be even more far-reaching according to IHS Research. In the broader cell phone market, Samsung is already number 1 in global shipments, leading second place Nokia by 5 percentage points.  IHS Research is projecting Samsung’s lead should expand to 11 percentage points by the end of 2013.

IHS Research did not project actual market share for 2013. However, two factors are expected to increase Samsung’s lead and likely increase their share from the 29% they currently lay claim to. The first, most obvious item will be the Galaxy S 4 which is already generating massive interest. Samsung uses a strategy of making devices ready for “a massive worldwide rollout through almost every operator” to help get their devices into the hand of as many people as possible notes IHS Research analyst Ian Fogg. The second issue will be Nokia’s continued fade and inability to break into the smartphone market. Even if third place Apple were to experience significant growth, they are still far behind at only 10% of the worldwide market.
